I have the question regarding Triangulation.
Previously my phone was catching my location based on triangulation of antennas even when GPS was not ready and still searching for satellites.
Now when I hit MyLocation it always says unavailable until it gets GPS signal.
Strange enough my feature phone SE Cedar almost immediately gets the location (different carrier though).
What can be reason?
Check you location settings in the settings menu... That might be the problem?

Well just read my post.
In location settings you have only GPS and WiFi.
As I wrote previously the phone was getting the Location BEFORE GPS kicked in,
now it doesn't work and why - this is my question.
And WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Google Maps show me today I'm in KarlsKorona while I'm in Warsaw!!!
What the f..ck?!

It worked once when I first tried it but ever since then for example when I go into maps, it's always searching and searching. the local filter in the bing search doesn't work either...
What can I do? Anyone have the same issue?
I've managed to bring up my location but it's highly innacurate. I downloaded the GPS app that is available in the marketplace and it's showing the wrong latitude/longitude coordinates as well.
Highly annoying.
Do you have Weatherbug installed? This app seemed to break my location service too. Sometimes it showed my location a few hundred miles away... I then uninstalled Weatherbug and somehow, after a while, it was working again -strange.
Now it's very accurate and fast.
Then go into settings -> "find my phone" and check the upper box for "saving the location".
It could also be a problem with your carrier -the location service first takes the location via A-GPS which is you provider's responsibility.
GPS might take a few minutes to determine the exact location.
I called 3 and they said I could arrange a door to door exchange but first they advised me to go to the 3 store nearby and use my SIM in another omnia 7 to see if it works.
Surprise surpise, after the call, the GPS is now perfect. I wonder if they did something at their end lol.
So after a few days use, I have come to the conclusion that the GPS doesn't seem to work well indoors, but as soon as I go outdoors, it's tracking me just fine.

GPS will absolutely NOT work indoors because it needs nearly line-of-sight to the GPS satellites above. The roof of a car might work but the roof of a house won't.
Indoors the phone is using A-GPS, the triangulation of cell towers of your network operator. It's very inaccurate and might get no location at all.
See my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9417735&postcount=2
Okay so randomly my weather widget stoped working, it's stuck on one location which is 5 miles away from me...it used to work perfectly. I read up a little and seems it's known problem...Any solutions...Yes i've tried hard reset.
Htc Locations and (Google) Maps is brilliant except it doesn't find my exact location...maybe a couple of streets away...
Is this normal? I mean I used to get exactly location when i turn off "Use wireless to find location" and Gps is off...So it's finding location from nothing??? but it found it exact then it can't update and asks me to switch on location settings and once on it can't find the exact location.
I'd be thankful if anyone could elaborate and explain things a little...
I wonder if someone with a wifi network has moved house.... (given that google were using wifi networks (apparantly) for location data - it even suggests as much in the phone's tips when you run through the settings....)./
One thing I would suggest is that just by using cell-tower triangulation the system won't be very accurate. But if you turn on GPS and get more than 3 or 4 satellites connected it should be very accurate.

Nope I'm just using data connection from my providers. no wifi. So You reply states : okay maps and locations wouldn't be very accurate due to no gps...Answers my questions. thanks
Now any ideas on the why the weather widget is only showing one location all the time ( current location )...Which is 5 miles away from me...
It appears the A-GPS function has stopped working on my 32gb S4, perhaps a google maps update recently? When I click the little cross hairs that are supposed to zoom in and center on your location, it doesn't do anything with the map and just asks that I enable wifi/gps. I have network assisted (cell tower triangulation) location checked on, but still nothing. Does anyone else have this problem as well? Was the feature shut down? I never leave my GPS unless I want close accurate location data, I have always just used the A-GPS for general stuff. Really not liking the new google maps at all

Just uninstall the update. I thought the new update sucked so I uninstalled it and I am now using the older version again.
Go into settings, accounts, Google and hit location and enable it..
If that doesn't work make sure you reboot. It should work after that
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4
I am having the exact same problem. I have everything enabled, and Maps will not detect my location without GPS turned on. My last 4 phones did not have this problem.
Settings I have examined:
Preferred network mode: CDMA/LTE/EVDO
Google Location settings access on.
Location Settings: Access on, VZW location services on, Wi-Fi & mobile network location on.
I have rebooted the phone many times and haven't had any success. The last thing I can think to try is turning off the "VZW location services" and just let Google handle everything, but my previous 2 Android phones (HTC Incredible & Incredible 2) functioned normally with this feature activated.
---------- Post added at 03:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:18 PM ----------
Update:
Deactivating "VZW location services" seems to have solved the issue. It must have been a Verizon-specific interference with the new Maps. I'm not sure what location services Verizon provides.
Now when I open Maps without GPS, I see a grey dot where my last known location was, and then within 10 seconds I get the blue dot with the larger blue circle showing the area in which I'm narrowed down. This is what I've wanted!
Of note: I'm also in a basement with 1 bar of 1X service, so it's not about the signal. I wouldn't be surprised that Verizon would inadvertently interfere with the proper functioning of a Google app.
Hi all!
On JellyBean I had the location settings on Wifi+GSM networks, since GPS takes battery power and I don;t need a very accurate location. On KitKat, Google can't find my location anymore, so it seems. On Wifi/GSM Google Maps prompts "waiting for location", on GPS/Wifi/GSM is finds my location eventually but only by GPS location. No GPS reception, no location update.
Is there something broken here?
I'm running a stock EU Z1 compact, no root, no custom ROM or anything.
Same problem here. I no longer have any GPS settings on my phone. There is not even an option under Quick Settings to add a GPS toggle. The Sonly widget has a GPS toggle but it does nothing. Navigation software can not find the GPS either. I have no GPS.
The Google Location started working again a few days ago, without any action from my side.... Maybe some error in the Google service?

Mine got going again after a factory reset and some software loaded on.
Do you have a distinct GPS quick toggle? I don't.
You can go to the Settings, Location menu and switch between 3 options: GPS+Wifi+Mobile networks, Wifi+Mobile networks and GPS only.
Lately my phone has been showing my google results in the wrong location. For example if I search for California Pizza Kitchen instead of showing the closest ones to my location (San Fernando Valley/Los Angeles) it shows me in Moreno Valley. This is true for everything that requires location including Google Maps EXCEPT when I use the turn by turn navigation the location corrects itself in Google maps but not anywhere else. This has become extremely annoying when searching for local businesses. I know this probably isn't specific to the S5 but need some help to rectify this. Thanks in advance.
Anybody?
I know this is going to sound far fetched but do you have WeatherBug installed on your device?

Nope
WeatherBug was causing this issue for me and a simple uninstall /reinstall resolved the issue.
Perhaps you have a similar issue with one of your apps causing the issue.
I'd check apps that use your location as a possible culprit.

Are you stock or root? Is it with the GPS on or network? Are you the google location settings on always? I had map issues on the s4, we wound up on a back road that was about 20 miles away from where we were supposed to..but I've not had issues on the s5. I'm stock, use enable gps and google location when using. Have you tried clearing the cache & data from the Gmaps app?
alright so it's also happening to my wife's note 3 on verizon and she is totally stock nothing fancy at all. Could this be a carrier issue with towers or something?

Like with what sainthooligan said, we need to know if you're using GPS or network to try and figure out what is happening. I personally havent had any problems with location. I use an app from the playstore called gpstest to keep my gps in check. You can clear and update the AGPS from the settings on that app.

its in High Accuracy mode. I don't think its a location setting since she has a completely different phone and it's happening to her too.

Try ticking GPS only mode and see if there is a change. If there is a noticeable change then it my be a network issue.

Switched it to GPS only maps works fine but google search results still show riverside/moreno valley area. Also cleared cache and data on chrome and google search app.

For "google search results" do you mean where the location is displayed from in the the browser? This is relative to the ip address of your internet connection through your ISP or carrier (see attached screen shot).
if that isn't relevant to what you noted, have you checked your location settings under Settings > Location > My places to see if you have something in there that shouldn't be for home, work or car?
So I had some more time today to troubleshoot this issue more in depth and boy you will never guess what I found. So all my chrome settings all my locations settings are correct all that stuff is good. And guys keep in mind this is happening to 3 separate devices with separate owners and gmail accounts on the same verizon plan. Turns out the Verizon Provided Samsung Range Extender was the culprit. Soon as I unplugged the range extender the correct location for searches and everything else was there. Now after power cycling the Range Extender it refused to find a GPS location. My range extender is located on a window pane and the gps united is extended to the top of the window about 8-9ft from the ground (basically as good a placement as possible). I contacted verizon and after long conversations with different reps they finally agreed the range extender is the issue. I am waiting on their technical department to give the ok for them to replace my range extender (they still seem to think its possible they may have an issue or outage with range extenders in my area and want to eliminate that from the equation before proceeding). Man I really would hate to wonder how this would have been diagnosed with someone not as technically inclined as myself and without the outlet of this forum for advise. So basically waiting on big red to OK a replacement for me and go from there. I'll update this post soon as I get to that step.
