This is confirmed as I am using it right now. Got solid H+ with speeds of 7.5 down and 1.5 up. The only thing that I wonder now is if we should call at&t and provide them with the new IMEI. Hot spot feature works right out of the box as I was able to tethered my ASUS Transformer. This phone is a dream come true. 10 out of 10 folks.

I am missing some point here. WHY OH WHY do you feel you need to give ATT your IMEI? They do not care about your IMEI first, and second, they see your IMEI since you are on their network I think.
Thanks for the good news!
It does support 850.

You don't need to supply them with anything, they don't need your IMEI for anything.
As to tethering, I believe AT&T actually monitors traffic to check if you are using tethering without some kind of special tethering plan, and will send you an SMS to tell you to get one. At least, that's what a USA friend told me.
Luckily no other country is crazy enough to do that...
Great news! Wonder if that's what the announcement will be tomorrow. May I ask where you ordered from and final price?

You don't need to tell them anything. If anything, what you should do is put your SIM in some dumb phone, call them and say you don't need a smartphone plan (if you already are on smartphone plan like me $25 for 2GB data) and want $15 unlimited data plan.
They will ask for IMEI of you dumb phone and model and change your plan. After you hang up, take out the SIM from the dumb phone and enjoy it in S2 with your new $15 unlimited data plan. They will catch you only and when they get S2 on their network and it could be few months before that happens.

Thanks Man, I order mine right after your post, and will get deliver tomorrow (FEDEX Tracking) cause it was before 4:00 PM in GB at that time
Catch you? No they want. International sgs2 will never be in there imei database. Once they carry the sgs2 they still will think your using a dumbphone. Just don't tell them.
Also does the sgs2 work with 4g. The op mentioned H+ working speeds.

Great news. my phone should be here tommorw after a Delay from fedex . I will be useing it on at&t. Yea but i wouldnt tell At&t anything, I would actually lie if they asked. I say it was a old phone not a smartphone.
Ok guys, fine!!! I won't tell at&t either. Shhh!!!!
where did you guys order from? I'm thinking I may jump on one....
So.. Once you give them the dumphone IMEI won't they see your SGS2 IMEI doesn't match the dumphone IMEI that you gave them? Just because they don't know it's a smartphone doesn't mean they don't know that your IMEI doesn't match.. right?

They don't care. They won't recognize the IMEI so will think it is another dumbphone.
Sometimes you get caught anyways even with a phone that was never sold by your carrier. I did with the nexus 1. Some say that was a shot across googles bow and other such things. I did run unlocked phone for many years before that without a problem. My experience though is once the carrier picks up a phone you might be in trouble regardless of it being an unlocked international version. Pretty much a crapshoot then.

The speeds the OP is reporting are what ATT calls 4G. So yes it appears to be so.
That's good news. I might have to try this method! I've been extremely reluctant to sign a contract with AT&T due to data caps and poor coverage but an international SGS2 is tempting!

Related question.. If I sign a new dumbphone contract with unlimited data and use this plan with an unlocked SGS2, will any of the ports be restricted?

the nexus one situation was unique because it was a USA phone sold by google in the USA. an international UK phone has a much higher chance of not being in any IMEI database that ATT gets.

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased an unlocked T-Mobile version of the HD2 and am using it on AT&T.
I had a couple of questions:
1) The phone is registered as a blackberry 7290 so will I be required to get the data plan?
2) Is there any way to avoid the data plan while still using the phone? This really is a deal breaker for me since I don't want to shell out 30 bucks to AT&T. I don't need a data plan but if I would have to get it, I wouldn't use the phone and go back to my old flip phone.
Have any of you guys had any success in avoiding the data plan?
Thanks in advance for any answers.
P.S. I really don't care much for the data features or the social networking. Mainly wanted this phone for the beautiful screen and the great camera.
Call them up and tell them you changed phones and want the data plan dropped. Give them the IMEI of a dumbphone when they ask for it (Google for one if you have to.. people give them away on message boards all the time when they want to unlock their phones). Ask them to drop your data plan and add a data block on the line so you don't get billed for WinMo accessing the network on your behalf. From there, you're set.
I've done this and I can get away with AT&T's $10 data plan. I still get full 3G service.
I'll try that tomorrow. That sounds much better. I didn't tell them I have a smartphone obviously. But I did ask them if they can do such a block but they said that its dualband so their system registers it as a sort of "smartphone". Did your AT&T rep tell you that?
On a side note, isn't there a way for them to verify the IMEI? I mean I can give them my IMEI for an old Nokia Phone, but wouldn't they know that isn't the case since they can see the HD2 IMEI?
Thanks for the reply!

No they didn't tell me that. Call and try again because that CS rep is an idiot or trying to get you some data charges.
At present they can't verify the IMEIs, not over the phone at least.
ATT royally screwed me, they said I had a black berry, I told them I did not. They said if I used any "smart phone" off contract I had to pay for data.
They forced me onto a black berry plan, and told me I had to take my phone to the store and prove it was not a black berry, and if it was in fact a smart phone they would "back" bill me
So then I asked to block the data plan, since I am off contract, they told me that they could not do it, so I told them I was changing carriers.
I will just sell my HD2 and be done with att, go to verizon and hope for better service.
I have been an ATT customer for over 8 years

The AT&T system does a scan every so often and updates the IMEI that is being used with the sim, that is how they can tell what phone you are using, The system can can only recognize ATT phones that is why it sees it as an old BB.

Yes, my OLAM shows that I have a BlackBerry Bold 9700. Yet I am on $30 unlimited data/text for dumbphones since they have a different IMEI on file. AFAIK the only IMEIs AT&T can recognize ATM besides their own is that of HTC Google Nexus Ones of the T-Mobile variety.
I'll call today and see what they will do. AT&T sucks though and their CS in my experience are jerks soooo...yeah.
Thanks for all the help you guys.

Yeah, I'm using the Australian Telstra T9193 version. It's more complicated than that but suffice to say I will be among the last to be caught by them, if ever.
Called in today but it looks like they want proof of the phone since their system reads my phone as different. The CS was very polite but said there is nothing she could do since the system automatically scans for IMEI and the scan will change it to the BB 7290...guess I can't really keep the phone then without the lame data plan
Oh well thanks for all the help you guys, I guess I'm doomed to mediocre phones until I find one that I like which won't require a ridiculously expensive data-plan.

That's just plain stupid. I never get abysmal customer service like that though I am on a FAN plan (so I get Premier Business CS). There should be no reason for them to disallow you from downgrading or removing your data plan.
Its just AT&T wanting to mooch off people. Its ok...I guess I can still use the HD2 as a super duper expensive PDA with a lot of cool features and a *****in' camera right?

That is absolute crap. I can understand requiring a data plan if they subsidize a smart phone, but if you are off contract and bring your own phone there is absolutely no reason they should do this. If I were you I would file a complaint with the FCC.

I was in the EXACT same predicament, att tried making me get the mandatory data plan which in fact I kicked and screamed about..What I found out is, that once you unlock the phone it doesnt register to att, basically it reads as the same phone you had currently registered with att. I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):
I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

is your mms on simple mobile fully functional?
Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.
I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

I've decided!
Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.
Best part is, tmo phones work without SIM unlocking. I'm getting 4G on my Galaxy S 4G, and all I had to do was stick the SIM in.

Wow. Just... wow. Seriously?
I am new here so apologies.. i have been trying to get all my questions answered by searching.
It seems that the sgs2 is rad. im eligible for an upgrade at AT&T and found someone at t-mobile who also is. I will buy a white iphone4 and trade for his sgs2.
I think this is possible, is it not? any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
ps. i plan on rooting and and what not
The SGS2 doesn't exist on T-Mobile. The closest thing by name they have is the Galaxy S 4G which is basically just a SGS1 with T-Mobile U.S. AWS bands. Is it someone who bought an SGS2 from overseas and is using it on T-Mobile? Before you start screwing around with your AT&T contract I'd check out what you're actually going to get in the swap. If you end up getting a SGS2 it works fine on AT&T out of the box.
yea im retarded. i just learned that you literally cannot get this phone through any carrier. you have to buy it fresh for the 700 or whatever it is.
ive been doing a lot of research and ive decided on this phone .. but at this point i save 500 bux by renewing my plan and buying an atrix. any thoughts??

Of all AT&T's phones, the iP4 in white is the most marketable on eBay. You could renew your contract and get one and probably sell it for close to $600. Then order the SGS2 from the UK or Expansys-USA for about $100-150 more. You could also use the dumb-phone unlimited data plan with the SGS2 for $10 a month which would eventually pay back the difference you paid. Good luck.
i have read about using the dumbphone plan. realistically it isn't supposed to last for much longer is it?

AT&T has no auditing software on their network to know who is using what. They rely on a database of IEMI numbers for the phones they sell (the Nexus' being an exception). Since the SGS2 isn't an IEMI they recognize it flies below the radar. It could change at some point but its been this way for a while.
OK. so just to clarify. I would buy the iphone and a data plan. sell the iphone and buy a sgs2 online somewhere. call att when i recieve the sgs2 (put my sim card in it) and tell them i lost my iphone already and will be returning to a razr (or w.e dumbphone) and want a dumbphone plan?
edit: and worst case scenario i just pay for a data plan and the phone works fully??
there's no reason to tell them anything. when you put your sim in the new phone att's system will not be able to match the imei and will list it as an unknown phone. just go into your account online and choose data for dumbphones plan.
a word to the wise, make sure you read all the fine print where ever you get your new phone from. a lot of them have conditions where you have to keep the smartphone data for at least a certain amount of time.
He has to sign-up for a smartphone plan to get the iP4. OP, once you get the iP4 tell them it fell in the pool and you're using your Krzr until you can save up for a new one. After they make the switch, tell them you want the dumb-phone plan.
I'm pretty sure signing a new contract locks you I'm for a smart phone data(iPhone data). You can still get the SGS2 to work, you just have to call AT&T and tell them you need to change your iPhone data plan to a smartphone/Android data plan. You will need a new sim completely as well because the iPhone uses a mini sim card.

i mean that would be pretty messed up if you actually broke your smartphone and still had to pay for a data plan for two years even though your using a dumbphone...

I started a new account with AT&T so I never had to change plans. Others have posted that what I shared with you has worked for them. Maybe someone else who's changed plans mid-contract can comment.
Will it work (SGS2) on Tmobile USA? or just 2G?

It works fine on TMO USA it's just you only get edge speeds. But of the box it works no problem.
Hey everyone. I just got an Atrix from a buddy and did the bootloader unlock. Will ATT recognized that I have a smartphone now that its rooted? I have a plan now that has the non-smartphone unlimited data and dont want to lose it. So is there a way to hide the fact that I have a smartphone? Is it an app or something I need?
Anybody have a serious answer?
Yes, AT&T will know.
Your phone's IMEI number tells them what phone you have.
And no, you cannot legally change that number.

THIS.
I can confirm that T-Mobile and ATT both know what phone you have from your IMEI. And not just phone model, but the specific phone you have. The IMEI is like a serial number.
Also, who knows what kind of monitoring software Moto put on the phone. I know I saw someone in the Motorola Owners Forum who was getting some help from Moto on a particular issue. They were able to tell what version of software they had on it and everything, although I think this is limited to Moto builds.
True, AT&T can tell exactly what phone you have by the IMEI number, but only for phones they have in their system. So, if you bought an unlocked smartphone that was not intended for release on AT&T, then you should be able to tell them whatever you want.
Just a note though, I'm going solely on personal experience. And I also believe that it wouldn't work out for long as smartphones and feature phones access/use data differently. But I did have a N1 and HTC Legend, both times AT&T had no idea what phone I was using even after telling them the IMEI#. Of course, the system they use could be more sophisticated now too, so who knows.

Thanks guys. I guess as soon as I put my sim in they will know its an atrix and upgraded (downgrade!) my plan from unlimited tothe "pay as you surf" plan? I remember back in the day when I jailbroke and unlocked an old 2g iphone they had no clue it was an iphone(piece of crap which I hated) somehow. So I guess theres no way around this?
Rooting and unlocking wont really effect the ability to identify the phone.

Since your current plan was an unlimited plan (although a non-smartphone one) you may be able to get them to grandfather you into the unlimited smartphone plan instead of the tiered data plan. Never hurts to ask.
I think they keep track of the 4g phones more than others.
I got the $10 data smartphone plan in 2008 and went through (purchased separately)
htc touch dual, htc fuze, lg expo, xperia x10 and my plan never changed.
As soon as I put a sim card in my atrix (7/2011), the next day i got a text that my plan was changed to a 2gb
I used a Rogers HTC Dream (G1 that gets 3G on AT&T) and never had a problem. I upgraded to the Nexus One when it came out and used it about 6 months on the $10 data plan. I received a message from AT&T over the summer of 2010 then saying that I had added the $30/month unlimited package.
AT&T never even sold the Nexus One (purchased it directly from Google) and they still applied it.
I ordered the Nexus 4 from Goole Play. I got it the other day and put my SIM card in and the phone can make calls but I am getting very slow data speeds. I checked my AT&T online account and it shows as if I do not even have a smart phone. I have heard that I have to call ATT and get them to reprovision my phone or something but I am a little confused on what exactly to do.
With my Galaxy S II I was getting like 8Mbps data speeds and now my speed test app constantly times out and sometimes it says I have 7kbps.
Help?
Call them up and try to convince them to put you onto a 4g data plan. If they put up a fight just tell them you're moving back to your SII and would like to have that data plan back. Give them the IMEI number, they should put you back on your old plan, and you just continue using the Nexus 4. You are not on a smartphone data plan right now because you probably gave the Nexus 4 IMEI numbers which isn't in AT&T's system.

The only question I have is will they be OK with me using an IMEI that is not mine? Can I get in trouble for this?

Nope. They don't care. I have T-Mo now, but when I had AT&T, I went in the store to get a new SIM and told them I had to put a fake Atrix IMEI on my account to enable fast data on my (then) Galaxy Nexus. They laughed and said well, you do what you gotta do.
Matters not. Just generate your own IMEI, check it for accuracy, call up AT&T, give it to them, wait, reboot, and you're off to the races. It's a stupid system, but easily fixed with that link. Read every bit of it and do what it says.
