Ice Cream Sandwich - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

iv'e seen this discussed on other sites and on xda (just not under HD2 Android yet) but...seems there's an idea to combine the elements of Gingerbread with Honeycomb and call it ice cream sandwich. wow,google really knows how to roll them out. they started with 'c' with cupcake,then 'd' with donut, 'e' eclair, 'f' froyo, 'g' gingerbread...and 'h' with honeycomb. and now with 'i' for ice cream sandwich..hmm makes you wonder what a 'j' could be ?? jello maybe. at this rate they're going to run out of alphabets !! anybody else get the scoop on this ?

you do understand this thread is in forum HD2 Android Q&A and General, right?

Exactly..it's under questions and general. so i don't know why it should be closed. i guess some people feel in control or powerful by closing someones thread, or having it closed. i just wanted folks input about what they think this new version has in store. geesh.

Hey that is crazy man I never really notice the whole alphabet thing. I to wonder what the next one will be called, The Ice Cream Samwich thing sounds pretty cool too, I will have to do some checking into that. It has my attention enough that I am subscribing to this thread.

Lets do some analyzing here, emphasis on anal. You joined XDA back in March of 2009 and have only made 68 post seens you joined. So what is your freaking problem? You obviously only posted in this thread to cause trouble. And judging from the two stats I just gave on you, the only reason you come to XDA is to leech off off of the great work here to have a cool device. Cause you surely are not making a effort to contribute to the community.

+1 T-Mac... couldn't have said it better myself!

lol imagine if it was actually would called jello. i think it would be sweet. Whoa never noticed the abc's either!

j for jizz

From anything/everything i've read on the subject, I think it's basically supposed to be a phone version of Honeycomb. Although, i'm sure by then they'll throw all kinds of other fun into the mix, and of course put a giant ice cream cone on the front lawn.

Supposedly, it's called Icecream Sandwich because, "I" follows "H"(oneycomb), and "...Sandwich" because in the Googleplex, there are statues for each of the iterations (e.g., cupcake, donut, eclair, froyo, gingerbread, honeycomb) and "icecream" is hard to differentiate from froyo=frozen yogurt. See this article.

i'm excited for ice-cream sandwich, wonder if it'll make it to HD2? I wonder what stage development on our phone will have to stop when the hardware gets too old? fingers crossed we can experience this OS, gingerbread + honeycomb equals awesome I think

This sounds like a great os, and this is what Google has to say about it.
"This morning we talked about our next version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. Our goal with Ice Cream Sandwich is to deliver one operating system that works everywhere, regardless of device. Ice Cream Sandwich will bring everything you love about Honeycomb on your tablet to your phone, including the holographic user interface, more multitasking, the new launcher and richer widgets."

Well I guess we'll have to wait till it comes out ( Q4 2011, source code?) then we can try it on our beloved HD2, till then, so long.

They might just be the Alpha and Beta versions of Android. If that is so, then the very first Android phone--the G1--running Android 1.0 is essentially a Beta release (Cupcake is 1.5). Which is actually quite in character with the way Google does things--it wasn't that long ago that "Beta" was finally dropped from Gmail.
(Sorry, I noticed that I could have used "multiquote" only after I posted my last.)

Maybe it'll look futuristic like Windows 8. xD Wait honeycomb already does. >.>
No idea, but I'm not so fond of a table sort of UI on a phone's "small" screen/resolution. But hey, that's just being prejudice since I haven't tried it yet.

So far they havent released minimum specs, some sites speculate since its based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core CPU that it will be the minimum. But a phone can dream.
The question is, if 3.0 is tablet based then what is the next update for smartphones? Surely not Ice Cream Sandwich? Tablet OS should work on smart phones otherwise they should use a different numbering system. Kinda getting ahead of myself since the x10 wont get as much as 2.2 officially.

From what I understand regarding 3.0, if the resolution of the screen is above a certain amount (ie a Tablet) then it will have the new UI and but if the resolution is smaller (ie a phone) then the UI will remain the same.
In this article on the german smartphone site areamobile.de, they say, that Honeycomb will stay a tablet-only OS in the near future.
But later this can change since they want to reunite the Android versions in the long term.
You could try Google translate if you're interested in the article

Considering the fact that I haven't used 2.1 since mid December and now currently running a stable 2.3 I'd say that no more updates is a little exaggerated. I never said that I expected an official se ROM, that would be a madness comparable to a iPhone user happy with the lack of flash. j & z have provided seemingly miracles in the past and I don't see why they can't again.

Yeah deff Honeycomb tablet version. Royal was working on a port but dev work stopped until Honeycomb comes out for an Android phone. The port worked,except for the phone radio. Texting and email worked through wifi only. Couldn't get ANY phone apk to work regardless of phone version or files installed with it.

It won't be dead forever.. our Cyanogenics (Cyanogen + random suffixes = WIN ) might take up Honeycomb once the source code is released which, by then, we should all be seeing Ice Cream Sandwich in the Android SDK. Bad move by Google for the consumers IMO, but good move for themselves. If Honeycomb was fully functional on our phones, a couple thousand/million would substitute their phone for a tablet. Additionally, it may drive away some people because they may not like how Honeycomb is and my opt out of buying a Honeycomb tablet. Additionally, due to the low sales of Honeycomb tablets in comparison to the sheep tablet ( iPad ), a small decline or poorer sales could hurt a lot more than it should.
Just my theory.

Im beginning to think it was more of an experiment of where they want Android to go more than anything. And since it was stable on a touch pad they put it out there to get a feel for what people thought. I know when you played with the size and scaling of the Honeycomb port there was a totally different UI that came up so I think they were going with the idea of Honeycomb on a smart phone but something changed thier mind,not sure what tho. Im wondering if it had anything to do with the Apple patent infringement claims.

Ice Cream Sandwich UI leaks

Earlier RootzWiki and AndroidPolice both received leaks from a "extremely reliable source" and they both obtained 2 different pictures of the new Ice Cream Sandwich interface running on the Nexus S.
You can read the whole article here:
http://venturebeat.com/2011/08/11/delicious-android-ice-cream-sandwich-images-leak-online/
Here are the leaks:
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
ICS is also to include:
Brand-new launcher and app drawer, with screenshots of both featured exclusively on RootzWiki - with what appears to be a task switcher icon on the homescreen, though it could be something else.
Camera now has a panorama mode (not pictured)
Gmail has been totally re-themed to go with the new OS (not pictured)
Nexus S will be receiving ICS via update, but the "Nexus Prime" will be getting it first
Mostly UI changes - many older devices (< 1 year old) should be able to run it
Personally, I feel like these are fake. However, the AndroidPolice writers were heavily defending the credibility of their source in the comments section of the original post.
My reasons for being skeptical include:
At Google IO, they announced ICS would get a complete UI overhaul. This is the same basic layout we've been seeing for a long time.
The phone icon is the same as from eclair. A phone icon inside a sqaure, while the newest phone icon in gingerbread is just a phone with no square. Why would google use "new" icons for most of gapps but not the phone?
All the icons are the exact same ones from the Honeybread T-Mobile theme (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gfxandroid.honeybreadtheme&feature=search_result) I'm not sure what the original source of the icons were, but I do know the same icons were "released" way before these leaks.
The signal bar icon is rotated, as is in honeycomb (a tablet thing). The honeybread theme also rotates the signal bar. I don't think google would get rid of the standard bars that's been the same on (as far as I know) every cell phone ever.
To me these just look like a gingerbread build themed with a modified build.prop.
Those are just my 2 cents as of now. There are a couple other things that just don't fit, but then again there are a couple of things that haven't been seen before. I do know that icons can just be used as placeholders when developing and that this is not nearly finished so the final product could (and hopefully) be completely different. What are your opinons?
hmmm... interesting...
why not consider it is still work in progress? at least that is what i would consider it is...
so the same kernel as Gingerbread?
I vote fake as well.

I have to disagree. I can't speak for Google video as I don't use it, but Music and the new Market work damn near flawlessly on my device
Not sure of the source of the icons? Have you heard of something called Android 3.0?
Anyway, it looks like the interface is extremely WIP graphics wise, but this definitely seems like the real deal. I just want to know what's going to happen to phones that have softkeys with this release and if ICS phones will have virtual ones as has been speculated.
Also, I feel that the nexus won't be getting an official release of this, especially with the weak GPU.

Thanks for the mature post
A better comment would have been telling me why it will and educating me not chastising me. It is only an opinion as pointed in my "IMHO" comment. I for one hope it will as I am only into 6 months of a 2 year contract with TMO. Brought the N1 to TMO from another carrier. I should have said that I didn't think it would work thru a normal OTA, but that with devs like Cyanogen, it may. Also, I don't know if anyone knows how much is being changed and if hardware will come into play. If you already know the source code enlighten us. I am no programmer, just a flasher. If this article is accurate it should work and seems to be little changed to a laymen. But, who knows yet?
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2101386/android-ice-cream-sandwich-leaked
Either way, it is my opinion at some point the N1's hardware or internal memory won't handle the newer OS's. ICS may not be that point yet. Hopefully never. We are running sense roms, thanks to folks like evil etc, but not without issues for a lot of folks. Bad blocks seem to hamper the N1 in some of these roms and the touch screen is not the best.
Another thread with varying opinions, albeit two months old--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137301
Either way I have thick skin and let's hope it works great
Ken
Don't know if these links have been posted before or their accuracy, but they seem to support our HOPE for ICS and talk about Nexus Prime. If this is old news sorry! Two pages.
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/compa..._nexus_one_vs_google_nexus_prime_rumours.html
If that's ics than its atrocious.
This will be the third straight dud out of Google.
I can't fathom "most work we've put into a release" and "total ui overhaul" result in that.
Seriously if that's real might as well hand over the reigns to crapple.
Quick thought,
Where it says android version, instead of sayin ICS shouldnt it say 2.4? To me it looks like somesones just recolored and renamed bits of CM7 I reckon this is fake but i guess we'll just have to wait and see
Good Point
But, maybe they haven't finalized a version number yet. Would think they would have though.
Trying to remember if GB leaks had number or said Gingerbread.

Shouldnt be that hard to track down. Since every single android release has had "leaks". Im sure whoever did this would have done that as well (if it were fake)
Agreed, having ICS means nothing
But, all I remember on pics is 2.3--
or, the GR122 or whatever the number is. It dosen't show on the MIUI rom I am on atm. Think it does on Cyan.
Either way after further research and faith in Cyan, I think we may see ICS on the N1. Unless some new info comes out. It would be nice because GB has reached it's wow factor to me at this time.

Don't worry people, it's fake! It's based on MiniCM7.
a while ago i suggested to DX to make a "fake" ice cream sandwich this has not yet happend. if you read upon it you will know we will never have a fully working ice cream sandwich for our x8's as processing power is not enough. it needs atleast a dual core to run all the feature's.so i took what i can (music player 4.x.x, google 2.x, ice cream launcher, camera face recognition, ice cream boot animation, ice cream ringtones, wallpapers,clock and a few other apk's) and made this my self it is fake as in it has not been released yet and will not be released but it is as real as the air you breath except you can actually see this just like any other "custom rom" this is actually based on mini cm7 but all other aspects are ICE CREAM'D.I get to use ice cream sandwich and most of the "known" feature's of it before anyone else on this forum or indeed anywhere else in the world. if you know how you can do this your self
Pm for info if needed.
Thanks

This is good, and beautiful and etc, but it misses the most important thig:
Ice cream base. To be honest it's like you get a handful of faeces in a cone and a little whipped cream and a cherry on top. It will look like an Ice Cream, but it tastes like sh*t.
So thanks, but I would like chocolate and vanillia more than this, even without the cherry. But this ice cream vendor will never come to our street.

You just made a bullsh*t statement.
I tried to point to the fact it is NOT an ICS. It is a gingerbread base, no matter what it looks like, the core of the ROM is still GB. You can install any ICS app you want, it will be never an ICS. The core makes the real difference (and the kernel, but this is another thing). So I hope you understand now.

Then it makes no sense. It's like you say: "weheheeee, people, I've got a 30 inches of e-penis in my pants, and you never has one like this!"
Well then sir, XDA is NOT interested in your e-penis size, especially if it only looks like you have it and the reality is that you have a vagina.
(And NO, our REAL custom roms are REAL GB and REAL Froyo. These are not just masked to be like GB and F... they based on them. So, end of story )
To everybody else: sorry for the obscene style, but this just hit the light on me...

[Update] Most gingerbread devices (including Xperia handsets) will see an ICS upgrade

Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly... unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.
Keepin fingers crossed for our ARC.

HTC may be busy pondering its Android 4.0 future, but Sony Ericsson is apparently ready to take a bite out of Google's Ice Cream Sandwich. Yesterday, in a post on its Facebook page, Sony Ericsson's Dutch branch stated that it will indeed upgrade its Xperia lineup to the latest Android OS, though it didn't offer any details on release dates. We reached out to the manufacturer for confirmation, and received the following statement:
Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.
The company went on to say that all official software announcements will be posted on its blog, so we'll let you know as soon as we have more details.
Bring it on!

yeah can't wait for ICS!
I just REALLY hope SE leave this one fairly stock, with regards to most of the apps and the UI.
They made the right move replacing a lot of 2.3 because frankly it sucked, but Google have really worked to refine this, it would be a shame to see SE spoil this consistency in the UI they've finally achieved.
.... Saying that.... I hope they keep the SE camera app, but everything else I'd love to see stock
So i guess we ( Xperia Arc Users) will get the ICE CREAM SANDWICH upgrade for our mobile ???
I hope se changes a lot.
I have real buttons so I don't want to loose screenspace for buttons.

I've read that we will very likely have the update after the launch of the Nozomi in march 2012, because their flagship should have the best software of the SE phones at the launch.

Its hard to tell from the screenshots so far, but it looks to me like the virtual keys would not be displayed on devices with hardware keys.

Judging by the emulator, that is the case.

To be honest it wouldn't even really matter, if you wanted all stock you could just use CM. I'm interested to see how they can improve even more upon what Google has already done.

While I like the SE camera app, have you seen the ICS camera app ont he Nexus (not sure if it's a Nexus camera app or an ICS camera app), but it looks much much better!!

That's true. I'm on a T-Mobile branded Arc though so unlocking the bootloader is a bit of a pain, but if that's the only way to get ICS then I'd do that. Just gotta hope SE update it officially
