I've noticed quirks like that on almost every phone I've owned. It doesn't do it every time though, and doesn't seem to matter where on the phone your hand is.

All devices without a physical antenna do this. Which is almost every phone now a days. All my phones done this.
Try this, hold your device sideways in landscape mode wrapping your index finger along the side, right on top of the ear speaker. You'll see your bars increase.

Actually, nothing is as bad as the iphone antenna. My friends iphone was horrible on that.
Yea, the mytouch is not so bad. I'm usually always holding my phone in landscape which is how it gets the best reception, so its all good.

I think every phone does
My wifi signal even loses a few bars for some reason when I do, and the router is ~20ft away without any walls

EDIT:

Death grip on atrix

I am experiencing a iphone like death grip on my atrix. Anyone else?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Nope, not one bit.
Edit: By not one bit, I mean that under normal circumstances of me holding the phone how I normally would it does not drop even 1 bar. I've made no attempt to purposefully smother it because thats well... stupid. If it works how you use it, why do you care if you can go out of your way to smother out a signal?
care to elaborate?
tried it, like on any phone out there...it goes down a bit but not badly. I even tried to smother it with both hands while running pandora, it dropped one bar. I'm not concerned with it. Motorola has been building radios for a long time, they know how to do that stuff.
Every single phone loses some signal when you basically cover it with your hands and squeeze. The reason the iphone was singled out so bad was because you could basically use one finger to short out the antenna and lose like 3 plus bars.

Although I did manage to make it lose 2 bars of signal strength. My Vulcan death grip did not work. I then realized it was a Borg, as it proceeded to assimilate me.
Mine usually goes to 1 bar when i hold the phone in left hand. Was just curious.

goes to one bar from full bars or were you already in a low signal area?

[SOLVED] bricked.... no download mode or anything

so was trying to load stock back onto my phone to send it back to sprint ( busted mic and speakerphone.... no matter the rom/kernel). had it connected to ODIN and everything looked like it was working. then it just spazzed out and failed. now the phone doesn't have download mode, 3 button dance or even any indication of charging plugged into usb. Any ideas??
Try sticking a needle in the hole under the camera with the back off. Don't know for sure but its worth a shot I read it might be diferent on some phones. Its like a hardware reset button it might bring download mode back

Try taking the battery and letting it sit for like 5 minutes , then connect to computer without battery being replaced try
Getting into download mode then

Voodoo magic.
absurd... Rip your epic open and share the community with some pics of your infamous button. we are dying too see one on an epic =/
What button are you talking about im dying to see it just in case it happens to me lol

Actually if you whisper into the magic hole ..."reset'' 3 times the voice recognition picks it up and un-bricks itself. Most people dont know about this trick, but works every time for me.
Actually, I'm pretty certain that this is the real explanation of the magic reset button.
Wow. There IS a button back there! *makes mental note*

No, but really there is NO button and already has been proved in another thread. I took mine apart and posted pictures, but people still believe...
See here:

meh there has to be something.... i tried about 20 times taking the battery out for a while and then trying again.... and all other variations of things. 2 seconds after hitting that button thing.... or whatever it is, was able to put it into download mode. wish i would have read this before i shipped the old phone back... lol maybe when this one bites the big one ill bust it apart and take a look
Let's start the button debate again. I find it ridiculously entertaining.

It's very apparent there IS a button. When I hard bricked my first one I tore it apart. Theres a little thin piece of plastic behind the magic cornhole that protects the board when you try and shove pointy objects in it.

Think I may have discovered something Wi-fi

I've noticed that when I covered the back of the phone with my hand (particularly the middle area) the wifi signal dropped a bar, but when let go, it would suddenly go back up again. This isn't particularly relevant if you're only like 2 feet away from the access point but just thought its something to bear in mind, if this has already been discussed then I apologize,i missed the discussion
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I think this is true for all phones. Cover the antenna area and the signal is due to go down a little at least. Look at the iphone 4, cover that tiny gap and you can go from having 4 bars to having 1 or no service. Same goes for wifi with another area. My Blackberry also has this. All phones do. It just depends on where the manufacturer put the antenna.
Yeah I remember the uproar that came with the iphone 4 antenna but that turned out to be a myth created by people who hated the iphone is what i heard
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Don't know if it's been discussed but this is a common occurrence in most phones. You'll probably lose a bar of cell if you cover the bottom part of the phone as well since that's where the cell antenna is.
Posted weeks ago as well .
Bottom halve of the phone drops WiFi one bar .
Did not on SGS 1 .

Lol is that why apple sent out 1000's of free cases due to the lack of reception when holding the bottom of it.
All phones suffer..Ive noteced my SG2 loses a bar or 2 when I hold it a certain way

no its real, you only have to test it yourself to see it, it does effect all phones some a lot more than others, this phone does seem to have it quite badly albeit held in a specific way - which incidentally is the way most people hold it, for me WI-FI was a bit of a fail for the SGS2, however the many great and fantastic elements to this phone more than makes up for this slight inconvenience.
True for most phones. My 5800 Express Music even had a chart showing the different antennas, and told you not to hold there because you would loose reception.

Quite a dip in signal bars but no real change in actual performance for me.

[Q] Ever seen THIS issue before?

hey guys, my friend just got a MT4G, non rooted (no interest in rooting ).
and he was "showing off" to me today when his hardware buttons suddenly stopped working. only the trackpad worked when he scrolled using it. all the rest of the buttons stopped working
finally i had to do a battery pull and reboot.. not sure if that fixed the issue (class was starting lol). i'll ask him again on monday.
but just wondering, has any of you guys encountered this issue before?
he's got S-On, and the stock gingerbread 2.3.4.
Haven't heard that about the hardware? I have heard about stock froyo randomly deleting all text messages tho.

Kinda, the back button on my phone gets stuck sometimes to the point where I can't push it/use it.

Build quality on the mt4g was never the greatest.
My home button stopped working, so I sent my phone to HTC to have it repaired.

Yea, I have the white one & my physical buttons suck. My back & other buttons often get stuck & my power button feels pretty loose. My battery door is also a little rickety. My boyfriend (i'm a girl, btw) has a black one & his buttons are much better, no sticking, no looseness. Kinda a crapshoot with these phones...

Phone heats up on LTE

Anyone else have this issue while using LTE? My phone is from Rogers. When it's on LTE, the bottom part of the phone, including the bottom of the screen heats up terribly bad and the whole phone eventually gets hot. I switched back to 4G and the heat went way. I prefer to use LTE as it's blazing fast here in Toronto. Anything I can do?
Hold the top of the phone? Just kidding.
At least, does anyone know an app where I can toggle LTE except when I'm browsing with the browser or watching YouTube?

Same here very disappointed I switched from an iPhone to this phone and the iPhone never got hot. Are all android phones like this? Love the os and phone just not very happy with cheap build quality.

No, not all Android phones are like this.
Take a look at your phone again, you notice something? Yeah, it's thin. being as thin as it is, you're going to definitely feel heat if you push the phone hard enough. And considering android is more intensive in terms of processing, Its going to actually use the system, compared to ios since that doesn't have to be as intensive considering how overly simple it is.

I would suggest that if the iPhone had to work hard it would get hot/warm as well. But since it is designed with simplicity in mind it doesn't have to. But I could be wrong.
