My SGS is awesome! But it would be just PERFECT if... - Galaxy S I9000 General

We all agree that we love our Galaxy S devices (or we wouldn't read nor post anything in these forums), but also we all have bugs or certain issues that we'd like to know how to fix or have resolved (not just GPS or battery drain issues people) to make it even more useful in our daily life.
I thought this thread could be useful to help each other give solutions or advice on small but relevant functions of our phones.
I'll start with:
- enabling Skype calls over bluetooth headsets
- I'd really like to have a smooth connection between the phone and the official samsung car dock, most of the time it enters car mode but exits immediately after, forcing me to disconnect and reconnect the dock until it stays properly, I'm assuming a background app or service is causing this but I haven't discovered it yet.
- Still on the car dock issue, I find very annoying having to listen to interference through my car speakers when the phone is not playing any media. Anyone know a fix for this? (besides muting the car audio)
That's it for me for now. Your turn people!

Tbh, Im very happy with my SGS atm.
I was getting a bit bored with 2.2 and 2.2.1, but with 2.3.3 I've added a custom theme (with screen off animation) and some awesome flying animations and wow, the phone feels brand new.
Love the free calls to people with Skype and the free "texts" to people with gtalk.
Saves me a lot on the bill.
Never been happier

My SGS is awesome! But it would be just PERFECT if people stopped making useless topics.

My SGS is awesome but it would be perfect if: it was SGS2
Just joking!
PS: forgive me if i spam by i need 10 posts to be able to post on JUWE's rom forum...

In my opinion:
Froyo: dock, debus, darky
Ginger: debus, goatrip

If GPS works fine... is the worst gps I ever seen.

My SGS is awesome! But it would be just PERFECT if...it was an SGS 2
+1 SGS 2 is a big step up it all comes together .

i love my SGS too. i have used darky rom, cm7, MIUI, and now using Tweak rom with TWiz 4. All of them are nice rom. the gps is bad. sometime freeze when i used beta rom.

I'd love to have the option to disable auto-convert SMS into MMS. It's just too annoying. I know the alternatives like GoSMS and Handcent, but I prefer the native Messaging app.

I would LOVE my galaxy if I would not change the rom at every 2-3 days
I must find a favorite rom...and fast!

My SGS is awesome! But it would be just PERFECT if it was an SGSII

I'm looking at a Nokia e6 down the road to replace my e72 as my backup "GOTO Phone" on heavy days at work when I don't have time to worry about the battery...

GPS Fix - Where is it up to???

Hi all,
I have almost decided that the Galaxy S is going to be my next phone but just wanted to check what the current state of the GPS problem is (yes I have googled but can't find any definitive answer).
Have samsung fixed this and if so what is GPS reception like, how long does it take to pick up a signal etc. How does the GPS chipset compare to the HTC Hero?
Cheers,
Michael
Its not flawless....but works decent enough. The update frequency is slow and has minor accuracy issues, but something you can live with.
Why not wait for a couple months and get a dual core based phone? or even the nexus s instead
i was leaning towards the Galaxy S due to its relatively low second hand price (I have seen some go for just over £200). Moving from a HTC Hero as I am getting more and more frustrated by how much the keyboard and software in general lags and could do with a bigger screen.
Quite like the look of the HTC Desire HD but battery life concerns me.
Nexus S seems over priced for an average handset to me.
iPhone 4 very nice but too expensive and lack of Googlemaps nav is a big downer.
Everything about the Galaxy S seems nice except for this GPS issue...
It is clearly not fixed.
I tested 3 different Galaxy S with 2.1 and one that I upgraded to 2.2 (JL2) and all of them had a broken GPS. It gets a lock, but it is imprecise. Sometimes it think that you are on the next street.<
Never had this problem with: hero, milestone and optimus one.
what about the 2.2.1 roms? have heard some people have had more success with these... anyone tried these?
mine was useless but is much better with 2.2.1

It has gone from busted to plausible, but still has a bit to go before actually being confirmed.

You guys should upgrade to JPY, 2.2.1
I get a lock everytime within 10 seconds
2.2.1 working great 4 me also.. no jumping around or loosing lock while navigating.. have tested 4 over 2 hours now..

It's not an option for all of us. If I flash a ROM not made for Bell Canada, I loose support for my locale.

Tell me how to do the tracks and I will do them. I am also experiencing very (dramatically?) improved GPS after the official update to 2.2. Previously GPS Status was showing a lot of satellites, but only a few (3-5) locked. Now it's 10/10 or 9/9 ... Haven't tested it too much around big buildings though (just briefly and was similar to results from my G1).

I'll try to record some track with 2.2.1, but the improvement is noticeable.
Maybe it won't be accurate enough for fitness use, but at least it doesn't jump around in a 100 meter range randomly.
Now, for the first time ever my GPS is useable. Not perfect, but reaches the minimum necessary to be useable.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=200899946886418974283.000498631226c188839f0
Google maps may not be 100% accurate here. Track was recorded from a car. Galaxy S with JPY seems to overshoot on corners, but certainly it is good enough for car navigation.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
GPS works much much better since firmware based en 2.2.1. My lock time switch from 1 or 2 minutes for 5/6 satts to 10/15 seconds with 8/11 satts. Accurancy was a bit better with JPU (nearly always 5 meters) but with JPY it's now between 5 and 10 meters.
TLDR: GPS is quite usable now with 2.2.1 ROM.

I can still choose whether I get the Nexus S or the Atrix; a friend in the US buys it tomorrow for me. I was done & dusted on getting the Nexus S (coming from an un-rooted Nexus One) until I took a final look on those specs of the Atrix again. That phone just looks too good on paper to not be good!
Guys, more updates please! Help a guy make up his mind..

Apps opening? - Fastest phone I've own yet...
Lag? - yes. Going from an app like Angry birds to home screen, there's an initial lag. It's annoying. Must be Blurrrrr.
Camera? - Disappointed...iPhone 4 is definitely better.
Let's just say I'm ready to install a custom Rom without all the bloatware and lameBlur. Blur kills the phones IMO.
Not many phones can beat the iphone 4 camera appart from Nokia, but is the camera on the Atrix better than the HTC Desire or nexus s.
Cheers.

Go back to the Nexus S boards then rather than trolling here. You clearly don't have the phone, any anything you state is a matter of opinion, and clearly jealousy since you're on our boards and not yours.

Came from Nexus One. Good upgrade.
Confirmed that with proper account provisioning, unlimited 4G data for $30, and the "phone" apn, upload is either capped by AT&T or HSUPA is disabled on the hardware by AT&T. Tethering plan may increase upload speed but I got no confirmation in this yet.
Otherwise it's an excellent upgrade from the N1.

The phone works great, haven't had any lag at all so far. Only been playing on it for 4 hours though! Launcher Pro works great, I have the 3D settings on and the animations don't lag whatsoever. No complaints with the screen. Only thing that sucks is my Worms game isn't working Something about being an unsupported device.

Should note that if you look at the reviews out there, the N1 battery life is crap (compared to the Atrix). Also the Atrix (like most newer Android phones) has a proper multitouch screeen. So you'll notice way better typing input immediately.
I will admit.... it's nice that nucentury is at least starting to use SOME punctuation. Not enough, but it's still an improvement from the first post i've seen from him in his other thread.
Besides.... who would even take the advice of someone who thinks that a gyroscope makes a phone that much better than any other device when it comes to gaming? A gyroscope has the same exact flaw as Microsoft Kinect. It's only logical to be used for a certain genre of games. Anything outside those genres, and it's just a useless addition to the phone.
Everything for me is great thus far. Phone is very snappy using LauncherPro also using Beautiful widgets.
Typing is spot on. Nice screen resolution. I would say the phone is overall faster than the Captivate and Inspire.

My 1st 38 hours lol

I picked this up yesterday so thought id share what I think about it ill try and give some structure to this but will end up waffling.
Feel of the phone: the feel of the phone is solid id say it feels way better then the s1 no where near as slippy or creaks as much. The textured back actually helps but the body definetly could do with being thicker... Just gives me an excuse for a bigger battery . If you have small hands like myself then using the phone one handed becomes difficult especially going for the notification bar or an app thats in the top left or right corner.
Call quality etc etc brilliant... turning the messaging app sideways changes the interface where you can scroll through all your different threads and view whats been said in each which I mentioned because its ingenious. I can't remember whether s1 did that :-\ .
The screen... Where to begin lol. Okay well remember when you went from lcd to super amoled.... The change to the + isn't as drastic but definetly noticeable. Not as blurry with text and brilliant colors obvs... The screen actually feels so smooth lol I dont know if its because its new but it feels like silk.
Music playback is brilliant and once youve downloaded power amp player or similar the s2 is incredible for music playback clear and loud. It plays everything In my library which has an array of formats so thats good news.
Camera I haven't used much to be fair... But im thankful for the flash handy as a light more then anything.
Touch wiz 4... Brilliant so integrated and together not laggy and actually looks brilliant... I actually havent changed the launcher more then satisfied with it. The phone has not stalled on me yet. The s1 was terrible for that straight out the box but this is the complete opposite functionality out the box definetly 10 out if 10 should be a relief for those who had bad experiences with the s1. It has loads of nifty features that you find by accident lol and then spend 10 mins looking for more.
Gps... fixed and works perfect... thats the honest truth lol.
Battery life... I'm definetly a fidgety son of a... so my phone barely gets put down texting calling browsing... Then browsing the same thing again lol this phone holds its own definetly brilliant battery life after I get used to owning an s2 it will definetly last a day... Atm im pulling it out my pocket every 30 seconds.
The browser is super slick on the s2 will give desktops a run for their money... Flash support is flawless... I wont mention what site I used for it though lol. There seems to be no problem downloading files like there used to be on s1.
I think thats about it.
Sorry for any idiosyncrasies or for any thing used in the wrong context
Ive seen a few posts in other threads about the head set quality... Personally the head phones supplied in the box are great they cancel noise out almost completely. if your an audiophile they should be good enough.

Good info man - Definitely helps sway me even closer to buying one. Let me ask this: how does the battery life compare to another device? For me, that's a better comparison as I get 2-3 days battery life on my Nexus One because of my usage. Does the battery double the Galaxy 1? Triple?
Thanks!
Galaxy 1 doing the same thing would not last me a day. Im geussing this will easily...

GPS seem to lock on speedily in open spaces. The chip is CSR SiRFstarIV, according to PDAdb.NET
I tested the gps for the first time today while driving.
No track to show for it at this moment, but it kept a steady lock the whole way, 30km,
no weird jumping around, showed me in the right lane of the highway,
kept close, about 5/6m distance.
I've tried this same stretch of road a dozen times with my sgs, but it never
even came close to showing me where I actually was, couldn't keep a lock, always jumping around,
sometimes showing me as far as 2 km away, so I'm very happy with the improved gps in the sgs2.
Battery with intensive use will last about 6 hours for me, moderate use 12 to 14h and light use 30 to 36h. But battery life seems different for everyone.
From what I've encountered with flash, it plays smoothly, only had some slight hiccups with 1080p youtube files on heavy sites.
The only minor regret I could think of right now after moving from the sgs1 is that my favorite custom roms and themes aren't available yet.

Xperia X10... How BAD can it be?!

In my urge to find something "different" I'm considering purchasing an X10, but all the reviews say it's just terrible...
Honestly, how bad can it be? Is this just tainted blood from when it was first released on 1.6? Am I wrong in thinking that it's a very usable device, either with the latest updates, or on a rom from the dev section?
I'd say wait another month when it gets Gingerbread and look for reviews then.
Right now, I wouldn't recommend buying it, no matter what custom rom you put on it. There are better phones you can get with the same price.
Ofcourse, I love the design, camera, UI, etc but the screen is so unbelievably bad right now, it goes over anything else
What do you mean the screen is bad? Response or the image on the screen?

I totally agree.
Most of the people that reviewed the x10 used it with Android 1.6.
IMHO, it's as bad as you think it is. But as Mr Patchy said what's the most important thing or feature do you want on a phone?
In my case, I just want a stylish, camera phone that has ANY Android OS in it be 1.6, 2.1 or 2.3, so with or without the GB update, I am quite satisfied.
Of course, any new features are welcome.

Well yes....but not 1.6. If you can remember 1.6 the screen was terrible!!! But since 2.1 SE adjusted colors and made it a very nice display imho. But, yes I to find it important to have a quality camera on my phone....big big reason why I ditched my nexus one for my very first X10. Then everything else just fell in place. I need a quality cam, reliable signal, decent battery life, and a usable messaging system, with an accurate keyboard.
That's about it.
Camera, signal, and battery life are just fine. It's not the fastest phone. It's still pretty laggy even when optimized. Things should really improve with the 2.3 upgrade but even with that, there are faster, more powerful, and featured phones out there.
For the average smartphone user, the major downside to this phone is the low in call volume. I've had to purchase a bluetooth speakerphone for the car (which is great actually). Taking a call in a loud environment is awful.

Id say go for it. You dont sound to demanding, and you dont sound like you need the best of the best. The X10 is pretty pleasing in my experience.

I've had my x10 since march. Ive had other droids before and an iphone as well but what i really needed was the great camera that the x10 does have. I've always read people having problems with low in call volume but I can say that i've never had that problem myself. I never used the phone with 1.6, when i got it the 2.1 update was already released, so i never experienced the dreadfulness (some say) that was the 1.6 rom.
The x10 is a very beautiful and stylish phone (specially the white one) with an outstanding camera, HD video and android. I can agree, that the rom (The SE one anyway) is not the fastest or more responsive thing on earth, but I don't find it too horrible either. now that it has the dual touch, the large display is a lot better to handle, even if not perfect.
I say go for it. try to find the one dubbed x10 HD (one that comes with 2.1 out of the box), because it is my understanding that it has a better display module that looks even better than the first x10s did.

It was bad on 1.6. I have to admit. Most of my widgets looked like ****. And certain wallpapers i used were not tolerable. Since 2.1 dropped i havent had a single problem. Everything is nice and crisp. Consider yourself lucky lol

If you want to make calls with your phone DON'T buy a X10! The in-call volume still is the worst I ever experienced in my life. All those updates, hacks or custom kernels didn't change anything. When you aren't in a church or library understanding someone is a challenge.

One thing to consider is how long you plan to use this phone. The X10 Is about to receive android 2.3. This however will be the last official android upgrade that it will receive. I'm close to the end of a 2 year contract so this is not such an issue for me. Granted if you are planning to use a custom roms it won't be a big issue for you either.
Edit;

It's stability ranges from no issue's at all to overheating, "usb & chipset" death.
Support from SE is very much lacking.
The x10 does not do well in low signal area's and will overheat and chew thru the battery on 3G.
The camera is nice but unfortunately lacks a flash.
The screen is great even with only 16Bit color.
It's upto you but i would suggest another handset.

Did you use the X10 on 1.6? There is a very big noticeable difference between 1.6 and 2.1. While they didnt give us 16m colors they did adjust the colors. Some of the same wallpapers and widgets i used then and now proove a massive difference. Not exactly sure how or what they did...but something was adjusted lol.

Ive noticed in bad areas it has its problems...sometimes even drops my call. But i most certainly remember my old nexus one had a very similiar issue where i live. When i had the galaxy s i didnt experience such issue...but that was only like a week...and my samsung focus has been by far the greatest. Not a single issue no matter where ive been.
