GPS Fix - Where is it up to??? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi all,
I have almost decided that the Galaxy S is going to be my next phone but just wanted to check what the current state of the GPS problem is (yes I have googled but can't find any definitive answer).
Have samsung fixed this and if so what is GPS reception like, how long does it take to pick up a signal etc. How does the GPS chipset compare to the HTC Hero?
Cheers,
Michael

Its not flawless....but works decent enough. The update frequency is slow and has minor accuracy issues, but something you can live with.
Why not wait for a couple months and get a dual core based phone? or even the nexus s instead

i was leaning towards the Galaxy S due to its relatively low second hand price (I have seen some go for just over £200). Moving from a HTC Hero as I am getting more and more frustrated by how much the keyboard and software in general lags and could do with a bigger screen.
Quite like the look of the HTC Desire HD but battery life concerns me.
Nexus S seems over priced for an average handset to me.
iPhone 4 very nice but too expensive and lack of Googlemaps nav is a big downer.
Everything about the Galaxy S seems nice except for this GPS issue...

It is clearly not fixed.
I tested 3 different Galaxy S with 2.1 and one that I upgraded to 2.2 (JL2) and all of them had a broken GPS. It gets a lock, but it is imprecise. Sometimes it think that you are on the next street.<
Never had this problem with: hero, milestone and optimus one.

what about the 2.2.1 roms? have heard some people have had more success with these... anyone tried these?

mine was useless but is much better with 2.2.1

It has gone from busted to plausible, but still has a bit to go before actually being confirmed.

You guys should upgrade to JPY, 2.2.1
I get a lock everytime within 10 seconds

2.2.1 working great 4 me also.. no jumping around or loosing lock while navigating.. have tested 4 over 2 hours now..

Lock time has never been an issue for me. The problem is that the GPS is wrong/not precise.

Same with JPU 2.2.1 roms are just perfect

If locking is not your problem, Da_G has made some awesome progress in tracking over in the Captivate forum. Try out his updates. Really interesting thread.

What we really need is tracks to show how good the latest firmware is...

It's not an option for all of us. If I flash a ROM not made for Bell Canada, I loose support for my locale.

Tell me how to do the tracks and I will do them. I am also experiencing very (dramatically?) improved GPS after the official update to 2.2. Previously GPS Status was showing a lot of satellites, but only a few (3-5) locked. Now it's 10/10 or 9/9 ... Haven't tested it too much around big buildings though (just briefly and was similar to results from my G1).

I'll try to record some track with 2.2.1, but the improvement is noticeable.
Maybe it won't be accurate enough for fitness use, but at least it doesn't jump around in a 100 meter range randomly.
Now, for the first time ever my GPS is useable. Not perfect, but reaches the minimum necessary to be useable.

Google maps may not be 100% accurate here. Track was recorded from a car. Galaxy S with JPY seems to overshoot on corners, but certainly it is good enough for car navigation.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

GPS works much much better since firmware based en 2.2.1. My lock time switch from 1 or 2 minutes for 5/6 satts to 10/15 seconds with 8/11 satts. Accurancy was a bit better with JPU (nearly always 5 meters) but with JPY it's now between 5 and 10 meters.
TLDR: GPS is quite usable now with 2.2.1 ROM.

SGS 3 days on......

Now that I have had a few days playing with my new phone I thought I would leave some feedback.
Firstly the screen is amazing! I have had several iphone4 owners grovelling at it.
Swype is a touch of genius! I am using it now to type this and its fast as hell!
The battery usage is pretty severe compared to what I expected! Does apps like juice defender work?
Gps is flakey! My tracks was bouncing all over the place, so I guess I am joining the rest of you praying for a firmware fix. I will try co pilot tomorrow to see if its usable.
Lag was a problem, however have been using advanced task manager and it seems to help. I know rooting is supposed to be better with autokiller, but I believe rooting invalidates your warranty? Also, when I reboot my phone I have about 150mb free, but after a days use using adv task man I only have 55ish.
Anyhow in all I am happy with the phone, just need to work on the gps and lag.
Btw, how do I figure out my firmware number?

in settings, about, and somewhere down the line.
You should be really restrictive when killing processes. Use the ignorelist for just about everything that might be used somehow by something.
Example, start the camera and it can take 2 - 4 sec to be ready to shoot. Have it idling in the background and its up in a split second. This goes for everything.
The onlu thing I kill is games, market and some other useless stuff i tend to run sometimes. Remember: you dont need a lot of free memory, for a quick phone you need your often-used-apps idling and loaded in mem.

Similar to my imrpessions in the first days. Screen is outstanding, the only reason I keep wanting to keep the phone. Swype is nice but didn't get used to it.. still type faster on my Nokia E72...but that is a matter of practicing.
GPS.. *sigh*. No comments. It is useless.
Also the lag was annoying but I won't complain much on that since I never tried any of the unofficial fixes.... still, out of the box it is a problem, definitely something Samsung didn't polish well enough.
Plenty of lag and memory fixes available.

is lag really a major issue out of the box?
yeah theres a decent amount of lag out of the box, but TONS of fixes available
About the battery, OP, wait untill you pass 5-7 initial charge cycles. Battery time increases twofold or more.
On my first battery cycle, it wasted out in around 11 hours.
Now i get more than 2 days of heavy use, and up to 6 of light use.

Your SGS must be really different from mine, perhaps even one of the 6 units that were released in proper shape worldwide. Hang on to it.
Not only you have no GPS issues but you also have no lag.
Mine has no GPS and it lags on the stock ROM (JM2)
Sure. There are lag fixes. And you can always buy an external GPS unit for only 150€ or so.
I just have the nasty habit of presuming I won't need to fix anything right after unpackaging and booting or pay more after spitting out 599€ for a "cutting edge" smartphone.
Customers... always so ungrateful and never pleased. /spit.

I really hope your right, as mine is still not great tbh.
I will try ultimate juice to see if that helps..
Should I be doing anything in specific in the charge cycles? i.e letting it fully discharge, or anything else?
Ref Lag;
I did experience it out of the box, but only after using lots of multiple apps. I found that task killer fixed the problem, and I have not tried any other fixes.
However I still cant understand my RAM usage.
150MB free on boot, which then decreases to 130MB after say an hour.
2+ Hours later I am down into the 90's...and after 8+ hours into the 60's.
This is using task killer regular enough...so not sure why it happens.
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Mine could sometimes take up to 10 seconds to open the phone app on the stock rom. Very annoying. Especially when there's an incoming call and you can't answer because the answer key just won't show up. Now I'm running the jg5 rom and samset 1.6 rom. And everything is lightning fast now. Faster than my iphone 4.
Using the Galaxy S as well for a while now. The phone is AWESOME. After the lagfix this is the best android device I ever messed with. I thought I would want to change the launcher but after getting used to the iPhone like design, touchwiz is actually one of the best skins I have seen. Rotates both ways, you can change the order of the homescreens easily and you can have as many as you want up to 7. It offers some cool widgets just like Sense does and the menu can be all reorganized and not be mixed up by alphabetical order. Even the built in keyboard is awesome for me. Fits with the rest of the design and its multitouch enabled. And you have Swype preinstalled if you want that as well. The camera is awesome and despite the lack of flash you can still take some really decent pics with this if there is some light around.
The screen is just on the sweet spot. 4" with Super AMOLED. Im in heaven really lol.
Even my mum that is a complete iPhone addict is now surrendered to this phone capabilities. Nice job by samsung and obviously by the genius who developed the lagfix and 1 click root.

It's worth noting though that Beowulf_pt complained that reports of poor GPS and lag were the things holding him back from purchasing this phone (so I'm honestly wondering why he purchased the phone in the first place). Especially since purchasing it every post he has made seems to have been complaints about the GPS..
The Lag exists, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. Agreed it could be better, but whether it really affects anyone is questionable. It may be mostly fixable by switching scheduler and caching better. Remember, phones such as the Nexus one might be better currently, but they also shipped with a deluge of problems which are now fixed too.. Even the iPhone 4 did..
The GPS does have obvious issues (the accuracy indicator is still wrong, which to me suggests software), but other than the GPS, I am still happy with the phone. Also remember the battery issues depend on what you are running (some apps don't let the phone sleep properly).
I'm still happy to give them until Froyo to fix it. If Samsung doesn't fix it properly by then (and instead does something silly like tell us the "signal strength indicators are wrong"), then I'll try to get a refund. But at the moment, I'm willing to give them a chance.
It is surprising to read people who have no gps problems or lag issues straight out of the box, either they are very lucky and have bought fully functionaly sgs or are quite used to devices which take awhile to respond (I think it is the latter)!
Certainly there are fixes out there to improve the gps and lag issues but none have completely resolved the problem. I'm using JM5 which is working brilliantly and gps seems to work quite accurately especiallywith co-pilot no-other fix has been applied (to scared to!), the lag has also improved significantly but it does occassionaly freeze.
I'm also willing to give the boys at sammy a chance till 2.2 version is out or till Desire HD is launched, which ever comes first. Till then this is the best device out there inmho.
I too didn't notice any lag, until I installed the fixes, then the lag was noticeable as the phone was MUCH smoother.

For me its great. I get good locks and fast. Tracks me very well on Google maps and mytracks. Rerouting is almost instantly and precise. It is definitely good enough now for me to be happy...
Edit: this thread was intended for those that flashed the whole firmware, but has gotten mixed with the flashed GPS fix.SO, THOSE WHO FLASHED ONLY THE GPS FILES PLEASE SPECIFY IN A POST FOR BETTER POLL RESULTS. THANKS
Regardless lets rejoice this is working a whole hell of a lot better...
I'm waiting for the OTA myself, but that is definitely good to hear!
works great here!
locks on to 7-10 sats in mere seconds!!!
tracks well, accurate
THe GPS nows locks on within 10 seconds and I am getting from 5-8 sats out of 10 or 11. A drastic change from before when it would lock on in about 45 seconds to a minute, if it locked on and at all and have from 0 to1 and if the moon was right 2. Also before this update it would lock on and off continually and now in a day and a half it seems to just stay locked on. Very happy with it now as it is now usable. Cardio Trainer now works and is consistent as is My Tracks. I must say a world of difference.
Before flashing this I was lucky to lock onto 2 sats. After flashing I locked onto 6/9. Seems accurate enough. Will test with mytracks tomorrow.
Excellent here, Tracks perfectly, Locks onto 9 sats w/o issues, Those that said it was a hardware issue, I expect a full apology, LMAO.
Put just the GPS fix from this thread and tremendous improvement.

Locks 10/10 sats outside and 20 ft accuracy!
A great improvement. Locked on in 3 seconds flat. It's pretty much gone now.
And people said samsung was horrible.
This message is brought to you by my Samsung Vibrant, using the XDA app.
I didn't feel like flashing the entire rom so I just used the GPS Update file and its working great. I have never had a lock indoors with the Vibrant and it locked in a few seconds to 6. In the morning I will try it outdoors.

Personally I could give a rip what other changes there are or to come. The fact is the zip file either works or it simply lowers the required threshold of the GPS to get a lock.
So either we are really seeing an improvement or Samsung is basically lowering their standards and hoping we will too. To say we shouldn't post here is well I don't know insane. The GPS still needs work, but its one step farther than we have been since the phone came out.
For the record I voted: gps is better but still needs work
10meters is still bad in my opinion, but its better than 30meters that I had before and I'll take that since it was what 30seconds worth of work on my behalf.

It quite obviously receives the signal a LOT faster than before, lowering the "threshold for a lock" won't improve that. You need a signal before you can get a lock
My Vibrant with the firmware updated is sitting next to MOTOROLA CLIQ at 5M, while the CLIQ is at 3M both in GPS Status and not Google Maps. Not only that but the compass is pointing in the right direction! I wonder how the .zip file fixes that.

zoid - you have no idea who you're arguing with - don't waste bandwidth
as to the unofficial firmware, i flashed it, and all i can say is "wow" - where my gps had gotten so bad it's accuracy circle was somewhere in the area of 1 mile, never getting a steady lock on more than 2 sats, after the flash it went to 7-8 locked out of 12 in view
did a 9 mile circuitous drive, all secondary roads, even did a circle in a gas station that had a huge metal canopy over the pumps - MyTrack logs was perfect except for one anomaly - it showed me clipping my neighbor's lawn by maybe 10 ft when i turned the corner at his house. Odd thing was i stopped before making the turn to look at the MyTracks map and it showed me at the very corner - it was later looking at the log i saw what it had recorded.
the other changes were all great, but this was what i was looking for, GPS wise - the entire trip it showed me in the actual lane i was in (some of those roads were 4 laners), and except for the one incident above never showed me in the weeds or 75 ft over in someone's yard or driving thru their house
i had the lag fix before flashing and was pulling 2000 - 2200 benchmarks before, now i'm pulling 850-900 but everything is as snappy to open as with the lag fix, markets, camera, etc
unfortunately i sent the vibrant back to tmo yesterday - had a 16th of sept return date, and there was one other issue with the screen that had developed, and in doing the flash something happened to the volume button - it had been loose, and it got "rattly" loose when pulling up the download screen
figure i'll wait till the g2 comes out and see if i like it better or buy another vibrant, but thumbs up to sammy on this firmware - i really had gotten cynical they would or could pull this off

I can tell you how it the .zip file fixes it.... It doesn't.
The reason I said it appears to be lowering the threshold is that it looks to me like the signals are no different than before the "zip fix" however in GPS Status 6-8 of them go green and "fix". That appears to be the only difference. I'm not seeing any difference in accuracy.

I agree with this. If you didn't flash the whole rom but only gps files, who says your getting the whole fix?
I say 10 meters is good enough for me. Maybe not some of you but I can find the other 10 meters with my eyes that the GPS wont. No biggie.
I agree also with heygrl as now this poll isn't proper, it was supposed to be the whole leaked rom not just files, so now we may be getting 2 different results...
Whatever the case, both the leaked rom and GPS files seem to be working nicely. Just don't know if the majority of those good now are from the whole rom or just GPS files etc.
I did the whole ROM, and glad that I did.
It is much better than the JFD.
Plus, I don't need a lagfix.
I didn't buy the phone to run quadrant on it.
If it feels snappy and fast, that's good enought for me.
No lag here on JI2

State of GPS on this phone ?

What's the state of GPS on this phone in todays date ? Did it ever get fixed to be as accurate as other phones ?
GPS files from a leaked rom has seem to "fix" the GPS problems. Personally, my gps works ten times better than it has before. Look under development for the files. You need to flash it using clockwork.

lets get more opinions on here
I have never seen a lock on mine until I flashed the leaked GPS fix by itself. Then everytime I look I see at least 10 and lock on 5-6 at least.
Same here. GPS was all but useless, even with the original fixes. On a very lucky try I would lock 3 sats, but that was extremely rare. Usually the norm was between 0 and 1 locks with location accuracy being within 1200 meters.
Last week I flashed bionix 1.3, which includes one of the fixes, and now my phone will consistently lock to a minimum of 5 and sometimes up to 9 satellites.
It's still not perfect and my location jumps around a bit, but it is accurate to within 50 feet and this is acceptable for my use.
As far as I know there is still no reliable word on an official fix from Samsung as they are busy releasing all sorts of wonderful new tablets and such.

Same as everyone else: none of the "fixes" worked for me until I used the JI2 leaked GPS files. I flashed with Clockword Mod and I get fast, accurate (~7 meters, which is good enough) locks.
After flashing JI2 GPS has worked every time. For over 2 weeks now straight .. fixed for me 100%
I tried the I9000 JPK Froyo on my Vibrant and get a GPS lock as soon as I opened the map program. good news is coming for sure.
i'm still running stock everything, and i can lock anywhere between 2-6 satellites when outdoors. indoor reception is very poor
Zero problems here .
Just turned on the gps and have lock in 9 satellites.
Still no fix for mine. I think its just broken but I don't want to Send it back because I'm afraid of a hardware locked vibrant.
After this post, The XDA app probably forced closed from my froyo lacking Vibrant
sorry but what app are you guys using to 'lock' satellites?

An app doesn't "lock" a satellite -- the Vibrant (firmware) does. If you use LBSTestMode, you'll see which satellite signals are locked by the asterisk [*] at the end of the signal strength.
Alternatively, if you use Google Maps or Navigation, when the blue circle disappears, it usually indicates you have accuracy <10m, which is good enough for street navigation. You could consider this an informal "lock."
GPS status
There are also apps in the market that will show you locks and more info. I use 'GPS Status'
I initially applied the JI2 leaked update, followed by JI4. Using the GPSTest app, I was able to see a lock on to at least 6 satellites within 5-6 seconds, eventually going up to 13 satellites, depending on how many were visible at the time of the test. The leaked update definitely fixes the satellite lock and compass issue, although the GPS still experiences some very minor inaccuracies as far as positioning is concerned - nothing that renders it useless, though. As far as the official update is concerned, it sure looks like Samsung will not be able to live up to the promise of a September release.
yup, I Knew Samsung wouldnt fix this in Sept. OTA
Who cares, the leaked Rom/Custom roms with JI2 work just fine.
Id rather have that then a stock Rom anyways from Samsung.
I have not 1 issue with this phone other than samsung is backing it. No issues now GPS has been resolved in JI2. For me, its good enough to get me where I need to go.

Agreed. Other than the occasional lag, the phone is pretty much 99% functional applying the leaked update. The problem definitely lies with Samsung, though. A lot of Samsung's apologists say "be patient, they are working on it, it'll be out soon, blah blah blah". Based on the leaked updates, it's painfully obvious that Samsung is working on it; however, based on an average lifecycle of a phone (2 years, give or take a couple of months), 10% of the Vibrant's life is already over, and still no official update. I'm definitely not one of the "I'm selling my Vibrant and leaving T-Mobile" people, but the stalling of the OTA makes me question Samsung's approach to future updates.
JI2 has made the GPS good enough for me to not ditch an otherwise great phone. I get locks on 6-10 sats at all times as compared to 0-2 before flashing.
I'm not surprised, however, by Samsung's silence regarding this issue. Unless they shock us with a massive push of a fix by Thursday, their reputation in the cell phone world will continue to slide.

GPS STILL wonky?

I am running an unrooted stock vibrant. I got the Ji6 update a few weeks back, and I was told that it would improve my GPS. But apparently my GPS still doesn't work. I know there are alot of tweaks and hacks here on xda that supposedly fix the gps, but id rather wait and get the official fix from samsung. But if the ji6 was it, then im quite dissapointed. Does your stock vibrant still have a wonky GPS? Or did the update fix it for you?

GPS works great!
I am running Bionix 1.9. Last night on my way home, I was in an unfamiliar area on a small side street and got a little lost. I turned on my GPS and opened up Google Maps. Within two seconds it locked me in and gave me directions home. I noticed the address at the top of the screen where it said I was. I looked over at the house number and street I was on and it was exactly right.

I've never rooted either, and for me it's still not perfect. Sometimes it works well, but other times the location jumps around, or the phone hangs and has to be rebooted.
I've seen an improvement since the JI6 update, but my experience is if you use it enough you will encounter flakiness still.
Would be nice if subsequent updates improve things, but right now that's just a hope.
Yes I had a similar experience, with my stock vibrant which has the j16 update. Took over 5 mins to lock on to the gps signal.

What kind of GPS fixes did you do? Or did you just flash the bionix rom? Sorry im new to the whole hacking scene. If the GPS really works as well as you said, I might just consider rooting then..

I believe it's just plain bad hardware, and it's not competitive with most other current smartphones.
I've tried a bunch of ROMs, with similar results. The update gives you a faster lock and an accurate report on the number of satellites, which is nice, but it doesn't do anything for the core accuracy problems which plague the device and cause tracks/navigation issues. It doesn't help that the compass is also still very wonky, which causes Google Navigation to flake out when I'm stopped at a light.
All in all, it's very disappointing. I'm thinking of switching to the Nexus One due to this issue.
I've got an unrooted Vibrant bought in July 2010 whose GPS rarely worked and almost never locked on any satellites. After J16 I get a quick lock on 6-9 out of 11-12 satellites. I am satisfied with it now 99% of time for navigation purposes. I do sometimes get wandering of the target from Google Earth even when standing still.

I'm not so sure about that. I hooked it up to my bluetooth GPS and it looked good for a little while, maybe a few minutes, when sitting at my desk. Then it started going wacky, progressively bouncing the pointer farther and farther from the real position. It might be the software that's bad. I'm going to experiment with it tomorrow on a long trip and try various settings.
Its a hardware problem..

I have to agree. I had the built in car navigation and the vibrant side by side. The vibrant is 200 yards behind while moving. Even when pointing on the current location, it is wondering around the neighborhood on a 200 yard range.
So what's your explanation for what I see with an external GPS which works fine with a laptop? That a phone hardware problem too?
As far as using the internal I've seen it work for an hour fine and then start flippin out. Then again I've seen it flip out in 5-10 minutes.
Gps is one of those things I rarely think about until I have to actually use it. I just came from a week trip to Atlanta and it connected once during my week stay. The GPS on this phone is crap, I feel bad for anyone that has to use it daily. Luckily I got 3g there and was using google maps to help me find locations. My recent devices Milestone and HD2 connected within seconds. This thing is always searching for a signal with a clear view to the sky.
Im in North Florida if that means anything.
i ran bionix final which i think is the ota ji6, not the kies leak ji6 and the gps didn't work well. but the ji2 gps flash worked great, and the ji6 gps in bionix fusion works great.
you are posting on xda, if you just want to complain go to tmonews or something, otherwise there are a lot of easy fixes that are like 5 clicks away...
GPS works fine for me on JI6, however there seems to be a communications error between certain Google apps and the GPS. I use CoPilot. On Bionix Final my GPS went from good, to ok, to bad, to horrific in a matter of days.

I've seen some issues with Google Nav as well. Did some Googling and it's not just the Galaxy S or Samsnug phones. Many users with different brands and models have reported recent problems with the Nav and Map apps.
Very wonky
Here's a may I did yesterday. All was good fo awhile until I stopped for a turn and it went ape [email protected]*#.

I can assure you that at no time did I ever go 118 mph. This is just one sample. It does it all the time. I've tried every different firmware I can load including stock and I get the same results. I've tried all of the GPS fixes and nothing. Some days it never even locks. I'm convinced that it is a hardware issue.
GPS works for me most of the time. Sometimes it will show I'm in my house. Sometimes my neighbors. Sometimes down the street. A few times across the city.
I wish it was half as good as the wifi. This thing can pull in an access point like it had a high gain directional antenna built in.
I'm even more convinced it's the software. Now my external GPS won't lock either. Sees 12 sats, I can see the data coming in, but it never locks any sat.

Upgrade from SGS, need some infos

Hi, i am a SGS owner and i'm wondering about upgrading to the SGSII mainly for gps and flash.
Could you please share some gps test screens and some photos? If there is an old sgs owner i do like to know its thought too
I am really interested about battery life too, but as far as i read it is the same as SGS

GPS and battery life are both better than my captivate
Both a lot better...battery life is better in my case too. Also, no lag....
After using the SGSII for a week or two you forget why you loved the SGS so much

GPS seem to lock on speedily in open spaces. The chip is CSR SiRFstarIV, according to PDAdb.NET
I tested the gps for the first time today while driving.
No track to show for it at this moment, but it kept a steady lock the whole way, 30km,
no weird jumping around, showed me in the right lane of the highway,
kept close, about 5/6m distance.
I've tried this same stretch of road a dozen times with my sgs, but it never
even came close to showing me where I actually was, couldn't keep a lock, always jumping around,
sometimes showing me as far as 2 km away, so I'm very happy with the improved gps in the sgs2.
Battery with intensive use will last about 6 hours for me, moderate use 12 to 14h and light use 30 to 36h. But battery life seems different for everyone.
From what I've encountered with flash, it plays smoothly, only had some slight hiccups with 1080p youtube files on heavy sites.
The only minor regret I could think of right now after moving from the sgs1 is that my favorite custom roms and themes aren't available yet.
