Sense vs... - Desire HD General

Hi, just trying to peoples opinion. I'm on cynogenmod 7, but see the latest sense rom and interested in installing. I use the go launcher so Widgets aren't a big deal. I'm more interested in battery life and linking to twitter etc.
Which one is best??
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

Battery life with CM7 can be greatly improved (and many reporting greater than sense ROMs) by changing the radio and RIL file (which radio works best only you with your handset can decide).
There are several great Twitter apps. Since you mention yo're not into widgets, what integration were you looking for? I recommend Twidroyd and Tweetdeck.
If you insist on having a sense ROM just because it might give a better battery life then LeeDrOiD is your man, IMO.

I used to use leedroids and yeah battery life was great, his new one is why I'm questioning really. The integration I mean is with the phonebook and gallery etc. I also use tweetdeck. I thought cm7 didn't need ril? Because of ril, is the sense battery and signal better?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

There are no better 'official' skins for android IMO, also the integration with other services like facebook and twitter are very nice.
On top of that also the very good looking widgets.
But there are also alternative apps with which you can create a similar experience.

If it wasn't for the fact that you can't have 5 columns / rows on the homescreen and ability to resize widgets I would stick with the HTC sense launcher, but I like having that many cols/rows and also having folders in the app menu, so go launcher is best for me

Sense vs. Vanilla

Is the phone that much faster without Sense? Is it any better on the battery? I like the Sense apps but have thought of switching to vanilla if I can get better battery life and less occasional lag (like its really that bad ).
Just looking for Pros and Cons...Is ADW a good alternative? I tried Launcher Pro and it seemed run slow, maybe because sense was running behind it.
Vanilla is better, but is not fasteror better onbattery.

I just prefer vanilla over sense, no technical reason why. Also, I second the vote for LauncherPro.

I like sense myself..after having trield vanilla and launcher pro..Launcher pro MAY be needing resources a bit more than sense and vanilla.. as these two are built in.. while Launcher pro is an app.

I second this. I just used Sky Raiders 2.2 vanilla and while it was amazing in the battery department it was not all that great in the UI arena IMO. I just missed some of the features that you have with sense.
I prefer sense, mostly because of it's better Exchange integration. I like the tweaks and additional functionality that Sense provides.

I think it was lacking in the ui because it is a mix of vanilla and sense. Some theming will clear that up.

I really like the 5 buttons on the bottom of Launcher Pro as apposed to the sense bar with 3 buttons. But LauncherPro just didn't seem as smooth with sense running the BG and all I could think about was how it would kill my battery with Sense running all the while I have LauncherPro going.
I run the stock rom with Launcher Pro as my default rom and nandroid backup. I use Advanced Task Killer to kill sense and all the non critical supporting processes and apps. My battery life is about the same as before I switched over to this configuration, and my phone does seem to run about as smooth as it did with sense. I have used ADW and a couple others, as well as the stock vanilla android, and I like Launcher Pro the best. I get some stability issues here and there, but LP just restarts and all is well in the world. I also use the Beautiful Widgets clock/weather widget, it may contribute to the occasional force closes, but they'e not frequent enough to concern me.

likewise I used to be an avid ATK (Advanced Task Killer) user.. but after having read how android OS works and reading plenty of expert articles.. apparently using a task killer is COUNTER PRODUCTIVE to saving memory and battery.. you can google this if you want.. Android OS has built in file and RAM allocation management systems.. the ATKs will kill a task before it has a chance to shut down itself.. resulting in depletion of resources necessarily.

I agree 100%. Coming from Moto Droid. I am not a big fan of sense. It just seems like there is too much stuff going on. It all depends on how much social integration you like, i.e. Facebook, twitter and so on.
Is there any way to change the bottom bar? I really like the LLP bar, but sense is smoother so I will likely stick with it for the forseeable future.

Sense roms

Why do people like sense roms, the only reason I like them is for the sense clock but fancy widget pro has a clone of it which I like better.

Personally, I've enjoyed the Sense UI since launch day. It's more polished than the stock version and that's all I need to be content.
Customizing your phone might be the way you want to go, but the time put into just using Sense vs finding your own blend isn't for me.
To me miui is the most polished and stable and with fancy widget pro its perfect.

I "like" AOSP roms but EVERY one has issues. All the CM based ones have wake issues with screen and calls I have tried everything. Sensors dont respond as quick. Take the phone away from you face with an AOSP rom and a sense rom you will see what I mean, the list goes on. The reaction of the Prox sensor is night and day. The best AOSP I have found is MIUI. I have tryed them all and give props to them ALL but I hate to admit it overall function on my EVO is best with a Sense Based Rom. And GB has nothing so far that makes me get all giddy.

Except its missing HDMI and 4G. Soo... its not really as polished. And saying you don't care about those features answers your own question as to why people like sense UI... doesn't it?
Personal preference? I like my 4G and HDMI... so obviously, I'm going to stick with something that have them..

My battery lasts a full day with Myn 2.2 and the #15 Kernel. 19hrs overall time without a charge, 8hrs of Awake Time. Stock battery. Do I need it to last any longer? No. I unplugged it at 11am and it's now 6am. I'm about to go to bed..so I can plug it in until tomorrow.
I don't consider that.bad battery life, and 4G or wifi has been on all day. Actually. Every AOSP Tom I've flashed has been about the same. (Factoring in the lack of 4G.) *shrug*
You're one of the lucky ones, because I tried so many Sense ROMS/Kernel combos, and my battery was terrible.
for me facebook contact sync never works correctly on asop, it always imports all my contacts even if it's set to just merge with exsisting contacts. also, the asop cameras i've used didn't have touch to focus, and I could never make youtube video sharing work from the gallery. for me, asop battery life has sucked compared to sense.

Battery life is about the same between sense and aosp roms if battery stats are properly calibrated when switching between the two. I rarely had to watch for wake lock issues on a sense rom though.

I like sense for a stable option with a lot of nice bells and whistles. Works reliable and does what I need with out much alteration or thought. However, I also have a backup with ADW EX with Calk's remove sense, which is also great because it does keep quite a bit of the sense options like the camera and a bunch of the HTC apps. Then, I use CM7 for fun and playing around, but i do miss the stability, ease and reliability of sense after a day or two, and flash back. I have my ADW EX backup looking exactly like CM7 minus the screen off animation so it feels similar.
My battery life blows with CM7 too. Can't figure it out at all.

I'm not a fan of the "look" of stock sense, but as a base for others to redesign, i love it's functionality, integration, and I too get great batt life, at least a day+.
coming from the Hero, where every bit of performance you could squeeze from it was needed, I could appreciate the AOSPs and CMs, but (so far) with the Evo, have not needed to.
Actually, the best of both worlds is probably VaelPak. I might give that run again for a bit, even though I'm loving Destroyer.
I'll tell u why OPINION everyone has their own just so you know
I still haven't seen any real world proof that AOSP rom's are faster than an optimized Sense rom like Mik or Myn's. So the question is why would anyone not want Sense since you get a lot of extra stuff, its more stable and more polished.

depends on what you mean by "proof", I am under the impression that benchmarks are "better" (I gotz moar Mflopz bro!!1!!) under AOSPs...? (can't be assed to find proof right this sec)
but i dont think any (or little) of that translates to user experience. perhaps the exception being some "heavy" apps will be smoother under AOSP.
I hated Sense on the Hero. but thats because the Hero was slow to begin with, and AOSP/CM was it's savior. Not needed (IMHO) on the Evo.

What ROM should I use [backup and wipe)

Hello. I tried the cyanogen 7 RC3. It is my first custom ROM I flashed...it is ok, the battery last double the time it last with stock sense rom. GPS still had problems but with a different radio things changed a lot....I could manage to get the fix in 10 seconds with GPS status.
I don't know why, but last days I couldn't get the fix anymore...rebooting, and so on...didn't help. Changing rom would help me see if the GPS gets a better fix or not.
Second reason I want to try a new rom is the contact management, calendar, facebook photo sync. These 3 things aren't really too well made on cyanogen...the contact list doesn't look as good as the sense one. Same thing for the calendar and the sync of the contacts with the various 'accounts' (google, facebook, SIM). I would like a rom with sense although it will be difficult to abandon the cyanogen gallery....which looks fantastic.
I am going to flash the MIUI to give it a try (just see what happens). But what rom could you suggest? Maybe with SENSE in it?
I don't find the interface important...I mean the interface is the last thing for me in a rom, I know I would always stick do ADW launcher EX for the home screens....what I find important is the rest (battery life, gps fix, contact and calendar management, photo gallery and camera).
I know sometimes some features can be replaced by 3rd party applications (SMS archive, camera software, and so on)...but some other features cannot.
I wait for your suggestions.
If u want sense then try leedroid v2.2.3... if no sense then try ultimate droid hD.. amazing rom.. im using it now and i dnt think il. Go back to sense roms
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
leedroid was the first rom I ever flashed it was great, but now I want to try others just to see what its like
That's the reason I keep coming back to Sense Roms, the contact managment and syncing through my different social media sites. And it just does it, flawlessly. I would try Android Revolution HD 3.5.
I like sense for the contacts, calendar and the facebook thing (I am no facebook addict but it is nice to have the photos of the contacts in the contact list...and that is automatically done by sense when syncing with the facebook account...ok some other roms do that too but how sense does it is just better).
I also like some sense applications and widgets....unfortunately the widgets are lost when I use ADW launcher ex....I love adw launcher for the high customized home screens, animations, and everything....but with this I lose the nice HTC widgets (contact widgets, calendar widgets). There are some other widgets on the market that can replace the HTC ones...but again, they are not as good.
So in my case there is a very big war between:
- contact and calendar management of sense
- ADW launcher and htc widgets
- the great things the cyanogen brought
- gingerbread and no sense
- some other details
So many interesting things which cannot live on the same device...at the same time...for instance MIUI looked very nice but had an awful gallery, too little customization on the home screen, but many things were very nice.
Try Android Revolution 3.6 i thing is the best...

RCMix HD 5.9.7 is definitely one of the best, but you could also try CoreDroid HD GB 5.4 as well, they are my two favorites at the moment.
I just installing i00 Desire HD 4.1 at the moment............we'll see how that one goes!
But there is one thing I can't understand. What makes some user put sense away? I tried the 'ultimate droid' without sense...I mean, what's the point of taking it away? What are the advantages?
And also...I am now with MIUI 1.4.22. I wanted something new because sense or not sense, I always end up using the ADW launcher EX because of its app management, menu, visual effects and row customizations. So...what do you think about MIUI ?
And also, I can't go back to sense keyboard now that I am used to the ginger ones. Same thing for the power notification widgets (lights, wifi, gps, mobile data and so on).
I recommend CoreDroid 5.4 or 6(still working out a few bugs out one this one). CoreDroid was the first rom I flashed and I've loved it ever since. It runs smooth and has lovely eye candy.
MIUI! It's fast, very stable and it looks great. It's also much lighter then Sense ROMs which is about 280MB vs MIUI with 80MB.
And today MIUI is upgraded to 2.3.4
RCMix, brings to us full sens 3.0....in couple of hours. The sens keyboard can easily be replaced.

i have been running the following for two days now, and can't believe i took so long to make the jump. so good.
ROM: LeeDrOiD HD v3.0.1 GB
KERNEL: LeeDrOiD GB v3.0.1
Radio: 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2

What ROM are you currently using?

This thread is pretty self-explanatory. I just thought I'd create it to see what other people besides me were using and why. Anyway, I don't know why I haven't seen any other thread like this, although I have a feeling someone's going to come and egg my house for this for some reason.
Right now I'm using faux123's AOSP Gingerbread ROM just because I like the speed and fluidity of AOSP.
Im Using UD. Its a pretty great rom but im getting tired of gingerbread and its little flaws for our mytouchs. Like the ffc for video chat being upside down and the lack of apps able to run properly
Everything? Right now RG 1.6. In about an hour probably fauxes AOSP to try to fix some stuff... (of mine that's broken.... not fauxs.. don't freak out).

I want to love the cm7 releases and they do work well but battery life seems to be much shorter than it is when using RoyalGinger. Anyone else have the same experience?
Running eViL's 4G-HD DesireHD port. I found out that when it comes to usability, pure Android is lacking A LOT compared to Sense (specifically - contacts/dialer, Exchange mail, browser), I'm tired of Gingerbread quirks, and I don't like the T-Mo Sense skin too much, so I'm running the pure Sense version.
As of a few days ago, running cm7 latest "stable" build. It's the first post-stock rom I've run, and I love it! So far very happy with the seemingly faster smoother experience, and battery so far seems much better than stock. I might get around to trying Royal's as I hear it's even faster and better with battery, but I'm wary of constant flashing lol, I just want a solid steady rom to use as my daily, and so far cm7 running LPP over it has made me happy

I felt the same way until trying Launcher Plus Pro (LPP) - no it's not Sense, but offers many similar sense-like widgets that in my opinion actually work BETTER than their sense counterparts, i.e. the "Friends" LPP widget is SO much faster than Friendstream, and serves the same function, and LPP's calendar widget is much more efficient, you get both grid and agenda in one widget. Add to the widgets the far-superior customizable dock and I haven't looked back. Only drawback to running an AOSP rom over sense is the phone-related ui elements definitely suck, i.e. the dialer screen, etc. Overall though, totally worth the shift for me.

I'm not using Sense for the widgets. Actually, I'm not using a single Sense widget on my 7 screens - even though I really like the full-screen weather animation that comes with HTC clock (but not willing to sacrifice half of my main screen for it).
I've been running LPP on stock Android for a long time using various ROMs on my Nexus One, including Gingerbread versions. The obvious parts of the stock-vs-Sense I already mentioned, but there are less obvious parts. The integration with external dialer in stock Android is bad, different screens coming up one after another for checking missed calls, very slow contact photo rendering on long lists, etc. LPP sucked when taking the phone off the charger every morning, having to restart and reload all the screens. Since GB it also sucked, being unable to do zoom-out and show 7 busy screens without hiccups, having to reload caches after every heavy app launch or charging, and scrolling slowly when using really busy screens. So I stopped using it and dropped GB in favor of Sense, and this preference remained when I moved to MT4G (my wife wanted the Nexus, I finally convinced her to move to Android from her antique WinMo).

Best Rom! (Include Screenshots of any kind)

I NEED to find the best ROM out there for the G2/Desire Z! let me know what you think it is!!
-Post what rom it is.. INCLUDING Build Number
-Explain why it is the best!
-Post a screenshot of your favorite screen i.e wallpaper..favorite widget etc..
If you could, let me know how good battery life is and stability!
-Looking for an everyday rom.. if possible
-Thanks!
I've tested several ROMs on my DZ and now I use Vision Unity.
It's basicly a 2.1/3.0 Sense hybrid ROM giving you real eye-candy.
In the latest version (1.29.0) I found some bugs/disadvantages:
- the homescreen does not rotate on keyboard open
- sometimes it lags a bit
- it takes about 300 MB ram after start, leaving you just about 70MB free (other roms are much better in this criteria)
- I experienced already few times sudden phone restart (phone just lying on table, no aggresive apps run like 3d games etc, and after few hours I take the phone and it asks for PIN) = pretty critical if you wait for an important call.
but among the roms I've tried, this seems far the best if you decide to have HTC Sense. If you can miss sense, stick to CM7, there are really cool features like finetuning the display auto brightness intensity levels (really killer feature to battery life!)
I enjoy Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 because I find it to be consistently fast and responsive, everything works for me all the time, and I still have enough ram to run a couple of apps in the background, unlike every sense 3.0 rom/hybrid I've tried.
Highly highly recommended.

LMFAO.
Cyanogen MOD 7 RC 1 or if your so inclined, nightly build #156.
- So far after testing a few ROM I've been back to CM7. Why? Once installed and running and even with keep all my favourite apps open and running in the background, I still manage to keep about 80mb of ram and CPU usage is usually between 2% and 82% with an average of 4 or 5 programs running. Ok a bit excessive I know but it still works.
I have custom memory script running that's available here on XDA and various other gadget. Battery life is usually fairly consistent with 1day 9hours of use. I use the device quite a bit in a day.
Power saving options: Brightness is set to 20% only, Juice Defender installed.
Running background application is limited to my email mostly unless I'm doing some work. Most of the time email, exchange, Facebook and twitter are sync.
I'm using Launcher Pro with the license for my main interface. Here are some screen captures for your pleasure.

Personally, my favorite ROM is MIUI.us
The stock Music app in it, is my favorite music app by far, I especially love how it not only gets the lyrics, but also scrolls them karaoke style with the song. It also has a nice theming system, and a great built in theme. Everything overall looks nicer than stock Android.
Another great thing about it is the status bar, you can enable/disable USB Mass Storage using an on/off slider in the notifications, and I love the way the switches work in the status bar.
Then there's the stock Launcher, which is much nicer than the stock Android launcher in my opinion, though I still replace it with Go Launcher, again, my personal favorite.
If you're looking for a responsive, nice looking, and user friendly ROM, MIUI.us would be my suggestion. It also has a nice backup feature with their servers. You just need to make an MIUI account. Not sure if it's still necessary, but back when I did it, I had to go to the chinese MIUI website and use Google Translate to make my account <_<

The best rom is hardest to define because it's really up to personally preference. MIUI? Sure if you're into that whole thing, but frankly I have trust issues with Chinese tech companies for reasons that have been in the news here and there.
Cyanogenmod is a great AOSP rom even though it's not 100% AOSP it's quick, intuitive, and has lots of options that would allow you to customize it as you want.
There are other roms such as OTA roms that have been made that are also very quick, but not quite as intuitive and they are not as easily customized as some other roms.
Now we get into Sense. There are ports of great roms from other devices that may have a minor bug here and there. Unity is a great rom but I know it needs work on it simply because of little bugs here and there, lack of ram of the Vision, and the battery drain of 1.31 is not so appealing. These roms do not perform as well as Sense roms made for the Desire Z, how ever you do not have some sense 3.0 features that make Sense so much more enjoyable to use.
I currently run Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 and it's a very quick rom, but it lacks the eye candy that we all would love with Unity. However what I love about the sense community is that there are many themes and many ways to enhance sense with add-ons here and there which I have done.
I want to clearly state that this is just my opinion and you should try out the roms for your self to get your own opinion and know your personal preference what appeals to one person is not always the same as the next.
Virtuous unity 1.31
Just test it , good for daily use

Super cm7 is still my favorite. I keep trying other roms but I always come back to this one because it is super fast and clean. Mexdroid is pretty good to but it is too themed for me. I think they are working on a more stock version which could be pretty sweet.

Actually, I'm now running the "Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 :: Enhanced & Optimized Stock ROM (2.42.405.2)". I miss the Sense 3.0 features, but I can try to flash some available mods. Especially the brightness setting in the quick setting.
But it's a small tax for a stable ROM without restarts.
