The fact that anyone is still considering a Samsung Phone after the update mess reinforces my theory that people love to be screwed over by companies.
And the Osama is a good news bad thing.
On one hand he's dead, on the other it doesn't change anything for anyone and he will be seen as a martyr by his supporters.

Ya they can speak for themselves. I'm never getting another samsung phone again.
They have awesome hardware, but the software and cust support blows. And stupid things that should be perfected like registering every button on a keyboard or working led lights or a kickstand, shouldn't be an issue on 500 dollar phone.

@the Samsung part, I honestly can't really decide. The GSII is just nice, in my opinion, and I know about the update mayhem but the fact that we've gotten a leak for Gingerbread this quickly gives me a bit hope for the moment.
The Evo 3D is a great phone, and honestly the only reason I didn't choose it was because I like the new TW4.0. Specs wise, Evo 3D wins hands down. But just remember, it's all opinion.
@Osama, yeah, his supporters could be a problem, but without a leader still helps. I mean, after Hitler's suicide (even though it was around the same time as the war ended), his supporters seemed to fade. I don't know; we can only hope for the best and that the death was fortunate.

Samsung hasn't done much to prove that they will be able to put enough pressure on Carriers to test updates to get them to users in a timely manner.
Hitler's suicide was a completely different scenario, a country/regime cannot function without some sort of leader, terrorist/guerilla groups can simply fracture and are largely self-sufficient cells.
Also Hitler's supporters didn't so much fade as flee to South America and try to start a fourth reich, just sayin'.

Okay well maybe a tie.
GSII has a better resolution and thinness, but the evo 3D DOES have 3D, and I've seen how well that works xD.
Then again...the evo 3d has only 8 GB storage on the sd card. Dammit, I gotta word these things better. ._.
Otherwise, same similar 1.2GHz dual-core proccessor, 8 MP camera, etc

Evo 3D has a higher resolution.
960 x 540 vs 800 x 480.
Performance wise the Evo 3D pulls ahead in some tests while the Galaxy S pulls ahead in some, its mostly a toss up. The difference is nowhere near 1st gen snapdragon vs hummingbird.

I'm pretty sure S2 will kick harder, but Evo's 3D features + higher res screen + the fact that 1st Evo had one of the greatest dev-communities makes me think I will go HTC next time.. =O

I want to know the same thing....higher res crappy display, a chip set that hasn't shown us anything in real world tests, the whole 3D gimmick deal, and will be locked down in some way or another. The sgs2 is completely unlocked and is all straightforward non-gimmicky no frills hardware.
I still doubt I'll own either one thanks to sprints new upgrade rules. If I had to choose one of these awesome phones it would likely be the sgs2, for raw power and simplicity. Oh and the S-amoled+ display, that has 50% more subpixels which is going to make resolution look way higher......read the review its all there.

GSII. The sAMOLED+ display is just too much to pass up. Going back to a lcd screen would be tough. For me at least... plus I love the whole ultra slim design. I am personally voting for a keyboardless sprint variant.

if the GSII comes with a KB. I just can't get rid of the KB>

If the GSII isn't altered to much by U.S carriers I'll have to go with Sammy but if Sprint plays around with the original design it's the Evo 3D.

True..it's just that screen and the processing power with the gyroscope of the epic is very tempting..

I must agree
I don't know, spec-wise the epic is pretty compelling.
The 5MP camera will look better than the evos because the lower mp sensor will undoubtedly have less grain and better low-light pictures.
The qwerty is welcome, im not sure about the size but it's good news to me that it wont be as large as the evo in wideness.
I love the 4.3" screen on my evo, but 4" sounds like a great tradeoff.
It will surely fit better in the hand, which is very welcome for me.
The hummingbird IS a better processor.. GPU is great. End of story.
Super AMOLED is the best screen technology in the mobile biz. End of story.
The samsung is a better phone.
That said i will probably keep my evo because it looks so much better. LOL
If the framerate issues are fixed and froyo comes along quickly there isn't much of a reason to return the evo.
Either way i'm happy, but my 30-day window is ending soon and there isn't much news about when the Epic will arrive.

very good points..the only thing bothering me is as you said there is no release date, but i think i might take my chances and wait
The Galaxy S model will be released on every carrier, so the Epic will have plenty of support, if not more than the EVO. The specs are undoubtedly better than the EVO's in almost every way. The 45nm processor especially stands out since will mean better battery life.
I need to buy the EVO as soon as it comes back in stock, so I hope the Epic is released within my 30-day window in case I want to exchange.
EDIT: I just saw a video ( youtube (dot) com/watch?v=x31Tl4_F1Wo ) of Touchwiz and it looks TERRIBLE, even though the iPhone-like icons aren't bad. Unless TW can be easily disabled, I'm going with the EVO.

Evo or Evo Shift

I currently have a Moment (and it sucks: which is why I don't want an Epic yet alone another Samsung).
I'm wanting a new phone that can handle 3d games without lagging.
I have heard that the new Evo Shift will have the same 800mhz chip that is in the new G2. That chip has been overclocked to a stable 1.6ghz and getting over 3000 in Quadrant.
Also the other rumor is that the Shift will have an upgraded GPU. Which is even better.
Honestly the 3.8" screen isn't that much smaller than the screen on the Evo. It could be the perfect size.
Plus it has a physical keyboard.
Truthfully, it sounds like I already made up my mind. But I guess I have to wait until specs and reviews are out for this phone.
Anyone else getting this Shift over an Evo?
Sent from my SPH-M900 using Tapatalk
If the 3D gaming is that important, and it was concerning the two, than sure I think most would suggest the Shift.
But at this point I'd also suggest seeing what's on the horizon and truth be told Sprint doesn't have the grandest selection but I can see that changing. Some big **** around the corner, but if now - or soon - a new phone is needed and that's what your primary concern is, then the Shift probably your best bet.

True. But the super amoled screen of the epic is awesome. I actually like that than the evo. It really is all up to what the final specs are off the Shift.

if gaming is what you want, shift could be for you. do not get the shift for the keyboard. i can type faster on swype than i ever could with a slide out. you might not think .4 inches is much, but the evo screen is much bigger than the shift screen. i'd look at both side by side and see.

Personally, I would wait for something else all together.
Something with a better processor & gpu. This summer should have what you're looking for (although maybe not from HTC).
If you want games then, as said, the Shift is probably for you.
As for physical keyboards, overrated. When I had a Samsung Intercept while my EVO was being "serviced" by Best Buy I only used it because the touch screen was so useless on that thing.
Typing on the EVO is awesome. Keys are bigger than any slide out since the screen is so big. It all comes to preference though.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/01/02/sprints-htc-evo-shift-4g-specs-leak-online/
some more specs have been released...
I am considering it.
I want a front facing camera... and 8meg camera.
i want to hear about the CPU/GPU and RAM.
can I live with 3.7" vs my current EVO 4.3"??
what are your thoughts on the dev community for this phone?
The EVO has so much more activity before it was released. And the Dev community is great on the EVO.
Latest spoiler from a feed that I'm subscribed to only has this Shift with a 5 mega-pixel camera not 8 and no front camera.
If this is true then I will not get this phone. I'll buy a pair of EVO's off eBay and save my upgrades for something better.

Why not consider the epic. You had an old samsung phone that sucked? Well I had an old htc phone that sucked 2 years ago, but all phones are different.
The samsung galaxy s line is really fast, and with the new ext4 mod on the epic, its crazy fast, like nexus s fast.
If you care about a keyboard, gaming, and camera quality the epic will be as good as or better than the shift.
And don't fall into the mega pixel trap when comparing cameras. The evo camera aint great and video sucks. The shift will be just like the tmobile g2, which is very good. Finally the epic takes pictures and video that rival the iphone in quality, which is to say the best in class for cellphones. With the epic , you can leave your digital camera at home.
Really do a thorough comparison of the epic and evo shift in person before you decide. Don't let yourself be fooled by differnces in 2.1 vs 2.2 software or touchwiz vs sense. You will have changed all your software in a week anyway with xda.

LOL difference is everyone was hesitant to jump back on with Samsung, and for good reason. At least these people that were nervous can sleep easy knowing they were right and that Samsung hasn't done much to change the tune others sing. And when the day arrives that I leave my digitial camera at home and rely SOLELY on a phone ... well, heck, that probably wont happen for a while. I've seen pictures taken with a crappy old 3mp digital cam that look crisper and better in every sense of the word.
Samsung dropped the ball, Epic has nice hardware but they don't compare to HTC. And HTC may not have a perfect track record in the past but they have definitely stepped it up lately.
The Galaxy S phones have been pretty down the middle, some good to go with all that bad.
edit; don't want to discount the fact that the Epic is a decent phone, will be the 3rd best Sprint offering (Whoa - never thought I'd give Sprint props like that) but it should at least "irk" you, and maybe not you directly, with how the whole Galaxy S phones have been handled. Especially with all the talk of Android not getting updates and Samsung support being piss poor. 2.1 treats it fine, my buddies epic flies sure but Touchwiz is horrid and the state of support or lack thereof should be the straw that breaks the camels back or however the hell that goes. I couldn't see anyone honestly suggesting the Epic over the Shift though, as was my point. And the Mega pixel jab, that was true and maybe a low blow but when people hear someone saying "this camera ownz leave dat digi at home, homeboi" it only sets people up for disappointment. Truly and honestly. That's a slight(ly bogus) exaggeration. If not, you must not possess a decent shooter. And no, I'm not talking about the one on the back of the phone.

As you can see from side by side pictures the screen is incredible small against the EVO generation 1. I would agree with the others, wait for CES, i'm sure sprint have a EVO 2 around the corner, after using a 4.3 inch screen i don't want to go down to smaller, just my opinion. To me the shift might be a little bit better for gaming, albeit it's not a HUGE step up. If it had the hummingbird cpu i would say get it, but even now dual cpus moving in, so just try to be patient, because in the long run you will regret it, especially if you're on contract.

Thanks for the links man, my wife has been smitten with the Evo Shift since I originally found leaked pics of it and she'll be excited to see a video of it being used. I've been trying to get her to wait to see what else comes out or to perhaps get a regular Evo but she is convinced she needs a keyboard (I felt the same way but now that I use Swype 99 times out of 100 I wish I had gotten an Evo and not an Epic but such is life). Anyways, I'm looking forward to reading the Evo Shift board and hope some of the veterans of the Evo board help out over there (assuming the similar form factor extends to the software architecture...Hey, I've got an epic and none of the related phones offer any software relatability lol)

***Poll---Evo 3D or wait for Galaxy S2 or Something else?---***

Wanted to start by saying, I love my Evo. Especially the last 5 months with figuring out how to put new roms. I was dead set on the Evo 3D, but that fact is, I don't care about 3D and downgrading the camera to 5meg from 8meg sucks. Plus, the possibility of a locked down boot loader, really has me thinking twice. What do you think?
Samsung has nice top of the line phones, but have little to no support after you buy. HTC is where its at, that's my 2cents
I want to add that just because the camera is going from 8mp to 5mp does not mean that it will be worse. I had an old Samsung Behold on T-Mobile with a 5mp camera which took much clearer, sharper and better pictures than my Evo. Now saying that, normally Samsung has better screens and camera's than HTC, but HTC makes better phones IMO and also has much better support when it comes to upgrades to the latest Android. Spec wise it looks like these phones will be very similar except the 3D part of the EVO 3D. Also, 3D can easily be turned off and will still have a beautiful screen in 2D mode. I personally would go with HTC over Samsung, but honestly that Galaxy S2 sounds like a sweet ass phone. This is all opinion and you are in an EVO forum so most everyone is going to be all HTC. You might also think about posting this thread in the Epic forum as well, but they will probably all be Samsung fanboys.
I was dead set on getting the EVO 3D until the annual upgrade got reduced to just $75. Now seeing the S2 and the Sensation, it's probably cheaper for me to jump ship for a new phone.
I may just end up keeping my Evo for awhile longer. I like having new tech toys to play with but the Evo is holding my interest way longer than I thought it would when I got the phone last summer.
I do agree with you about the support, but, don't be surprised if they start to change because of carrier pressure.

EVO 3D is going to be the way to go. Samsung never has good development for their Galaxy phones.

I admit, the GS2 had me tempted, but I keep reminding myself what solid phone the Evo is. I also owned the Touch Pro, and that was great phone for its time as well.
I too debated with this decision but I decided to go ahead and preorder an EVO 3D. I have some concerns that the GS2 on Sprint will have a HW keyboard, something I am not interested in, but everything else about the phone I think is great, in fact I think the GS2 would be a good candidate for the next Nexus phone. The Super AMOLED+ screen on the GS2 will offer superior battery life to the EVO and even with the lower resolution will probably look a little better...
I agree with the arguments about development, but I think that if the EVO 3D has an encrypted bootloader and the GS2 releases in a bar form with only a locked bootloader, then there may be a shift in development towards the GS2.
My plan is this: Get the EVO 3D, if the bootloader is encrypted then I will return it and wait for a GS2 announcement or get a nexus S.
I'm waiting for another phone.

Sprint, or is another carrier an option. Sprint had been light on handset choices recently. Hopefully that will change. I really liked the Sensation, but would never go to T-Mobile. I hope there are more choices later this year.

The iPhone camera is better than the Evo and it's less megapixel. Tge shutter speed on the iphone us much faster than the Evo and it focuses faster. I've had amazing pictures come out with the iPhone. I'm pretty sure tge same can be said with the touch. I believe the lens on the i devices are better except for the iPad 2 camera sucking gnome ass.

Funny how you don't think a smartphone camera is important until you realize you leave your point and shoot at home all the time. Its a big deal.

I was just thinking if or when we get a fully functional E3d rom and it runs good on our EVO's I don't see me being in a rush to grab the upgrade... for what 3d pics? Meh. I might just save my upgrade for what Q3/Q4 will have to offer, if anything.

I was also considering that. That also makes sense, since i have been following the ports threads. These guys are amazing at what they have been able to do with the Evo. Thanks for that perspective.

OFFICIAL: Samsung Galaxy SII coming to Sprint as the Samsung Within

Probably been mentioned before, but I don't really care...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/16/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-us-carrier-names-revealed-atandt-attain-veri/
So I'm really reconsidering the EVO 3D now.
Hmm.. as much as I hate Samsung, that phone is beautiful. And if HTC is locking down the Evo 3D, I may actually have to purchase a Samsung.
It kind of hurts to say that.
Not me....its still a Samsung. 3d all day!!!

If the 3D is locked down the way they say it is, flashaholics will either have to go through rehab, or get another maker's phone that isn't so locked down.
Yes. If the 3D is locked down. Coupled with Sammys new desire to change their bad rep.. with the Galaxy S looking to be one of the first phones officially Upgraded to GB. This phone is looking SO much better.
I just REALLY hope it doesn't have a crappy physical keyboard. I want it just the way it is. Sammy phones also have excellent battery life right out the box so waiting for a solid root method/custom roms/kernels won't be an issue.
3D is a gimmick at best. If the Samsung's battery life is significantly better than that of the EVO 3D, I'll have no choice. For me, personally, performance, battery life, and display quality are the most important things on a smartphone. The SII was overclocked to 1.5GHz yielding 4000+ Quadrant scores. That's impressive. The battery life is also pretty good coming from some reviews. I feel the 3D feature and camera on the new EVO will guzzle that battery. And I don't care how good qHD is, that Super AMOLED Plus 4.3" screen is pure sex. The slimness of the SII doesn't hurt either. I don't know about you, but I'm somewhat over my EVO's shape/style... hoping for something different and the EVO 3D doesn't really offer that.

While I agree about the 3D portion being a gimmick. It won't be killing the battery unless you're using it.. which is optional. I doubt people that think of it as a gimmick will use it much.
I am 100% with you on your points tho. Performance, battery life, display quality are most important. Samsung repairing their rep is also really starting to win me over. My mom has the mesmerize... that thing looks awesome and has excellent battery life. Plus she is about to get a GB update...
I love HTC.. but I just feel liek the new Sense 3.0 will bring the same poor battery life even with a bigger battery. It may be a little better.. but prolly not much. If the bootloader is encrypted.. then forget about it.

Sadly, I agree with you.
I somehow don't think it will tho. The commercial I seen on youtube was showing off how thin it was by sliding it under a door... I would hope they don't plan on killing that by adding a keyboard.

What about this is "OFFICIAL"? Is it that it's coming to Sprint or the name? I read the link but didn't see an official source, sorry if I missed that.

Official?
I'm pretty sure this will not have a physical keyboard, look at the case. Case in point (pun intended).

I'd take this over the 3d. HTC seems to always have battery issues with every phone, and I know they did with every phone I or a friend has had. Couple that with a locked down bootloader and this guy is going SGII (as long as the build quality is good).

There is no physical keyboard, the phone is just 0.33 inches thick (Evo is 0.47"). You just had to click the link in the first article and you get a full review of the phone:

Yes, it was the same way on the Galaxy S 1. Once it came to the US, each major carrier got a different version. Verizon/Us Cellular looked about identical with AT&T varying only a little.
As we know, the Sprint Epic 4G was the bastard child of the galaxy S line... horrible.

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.

The epic pretty much is an all around better phone
An argument could be made on the SW side, but that falls by the wayside if you are not staying stock
Mainly, the EVO Shift is simply missing to many top level hardware items, that make it a upper mid range phone rather than the top tier the Epic is
I was faced with the same question when I bought not long ago.
Screen size favors Epic (4.0" - 3.6" That's a significant difference in Real Estate)
Screen brightness favors Epic (Samsungs Super AMOLED easily tops anything HTC has IMO)
Keyboard favors Epic (the larger size of the phone spaces the keys better, Epic has 5 rows including dedicated number row)
Processor favors the Epic (1.0 Ghz Hummingbird - 800 Mhz Snapdragon)
I believe rated battery stock time is 5.50 hrs for Epic to 6.00 for Shift.
Epic has front facing camera (which I never use, but some people do I'm sure)
The list goes on, but you can google other features.
As far as Flashing ROMs, I am NOT really tech savvy, but after reading through these forums I was not only able to root the phone quickly, but flashing was simple and I have found the ROMs I've used to be stable and functional with very few bugs. Can't beat that.
Epic, all the way.
Epic. Who ever choosed shift needs a swift kick in the wallnuts.

Even though i love my epic i would go with the shift because it has locked gps in a few seconds and capable of overclocking to 2.0Ghz and 1.6Ghz stable.
Its fun to use but i like epic 4g because of its screen. and Samsung is Easy to manipulate and easy to use like rooting and all that stuff.
But now its easy to get the Shift rooted in all.
I just like the bigger screen and AMOLED is deal breaker. i went with the shift at 1st because Samsung pissed me off as well as thousands more, with a certain phone.
Thanks everybody for your answers .. I'm leaning towards the Epic now.

Yeah .. I'm leaning more towards the Epic though just because of the screen and 5 row keyboard.. But the thing I heard is that the Epic phones screen black out all the time, and I'm not going to have insurance or be on Sprint (flashing) .. And the HTC build quality is superior to Samsung. So I'm stuck.. any more suggestions?
I figured I would post this here, even though I also placed it in the troll thread, as it was having the same discussion
I haven't heard of the Epic screens blacking out, but mine has held up beyond belief, even after facing harsh abuse.
IMO, it is a not a "power/speed" issue that makes the EVO Shift a lesser phone, but the overall lack of top end hardware features, and those CAN'T be modded in later
Here are several reviews with the conclusions, as well as links to the original reviews, and the Epic is not just a winner, but a CLEAR winner in every case.
From Techd
You don’t have to imagine how two Android smartphones would perform when pitted against one another, as the folks at WireFly have done the deed. Pitting HTC EVO Shift 4G against the Samsung Epic 4G, the latter wins out big time.
...
So, it seems like the EVO Shift 4G did admirably well for some basic processes, but stumbled badly when it comes to complex 3G graphics. But then again, it has a lower running processor than the Epic 4G with only 800MHz — though that’s not the end all be all performance measurement.

4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G
Avatar for Brian Barrett Brian Barrett —4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G Let's say you want a 4G phone, because 4 is one more G than your current phone has. If you're deciding between Sprint's finest—the HTC Evo Shift and the Samsung Epic 4G—you're gonna want to watch this.
Both phones are sliders, both are on the same network, and by outward appearances seem pretty much identical. But! The Epic 4G, it turns out, is packing way more horses under the hood. As it should, considering it costs almost twice as much as the Shift.

The Winner
Unlike other previous battles such as the HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic battle, Samsung Epic 4Gthe HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Samsung Epic 4G battle seems to have a pretty clear cut winner. The Samsung Epic 4G, even though it came out first, has huge advantages when it comes to display, and features while the HTC EVO Shift 4G manages to win a slight edge in design and software. Overall the advantages of the Samsung Epic 4G are too big to ignore and it easily comes out on top in this battle of 4G keyboard slider smartphones on Sprint.

heres the thing though Shift is running 2nd Gen Snap. And even @ 800Mhz it pulls double score than Epic @1Ghz both on froyo.
Then Shift on 2.3 just blows the sh*t outta the Epic.
Newer Technology is better.
Older Technology is Wiser.
But in the end its all down to personal preference.
Just mess with both phones see what you really like and want.

As for build quality..who told you HTC phones have better build quality? that is a myth created because the samsung phones feel so light..the build quality is top notch, not to mention Gorilla Glass..

SmartBench 2010 and other various benchmarks but Quadrant does pull higher but thats not point. the point is its newer technology 45nm instead of 65nm.
