Russian firmware?

Thanks, even though I have quite a number of firmwares already, it looks like the kernel from this firmware is the piece of the puzzle I was missing to make a proper kernel hack (like CF-Root). Let's hope I'm right!
Cheers!

Looks like it, and here's an interesting note from the changelog for the system/PDA image:
" Release for CIS. ( Base : XWKDD, same CL),
different : Remove Readers Hub, Music Hub, Social Hub (premium -> Basic)"

Coming from HTC phones, I don't understand why ODIN or KIES are still used. It really looks like something from the past... Can't we just flash update.zip files through recovery like normal android phones or in the worst case, flash .zip files through hboot?
I really hope that Paul or someone else will port CWR to this phone. *fingers crossed*

I personally really like Odin
Much prefer it to copying the zip file onto the phone, and then booting into recovery

The Galaxy series can also flash update.zip like any other Android device, but the zips require signing by Samsung to be flashable by default. So recovery has to modded first, and to do that you need to flash a custom kernel, and to do that, you need ODIN.
Besides, though I like update.zips for small patches, why people prefer them for full firmwares is still beyond me. ODIN is much faster method for flashing than first having to copy to SD card, then flash.
As for KIES, KIES automatically downloads and flashes the latest official firmware for you (using the same protocol that ODIN uses). I don't like KIES at all, but for the "normal" non-XDA-type-person-user it's great.
Also keep in mind that ODIN is an engineering tool... it was never meant to end up in consumer hands.

Probably *hubs are not completely release_soft that them to establish in all firmwares

so does this mean Russia is not getting Samsung Hubs?? Then how come Eldar's phone had them? just because it was a review phone?
Edit: I think i just answered my question!

On my Desire it's faster for me because I download ROMs direct to the SD card in my phone over WiFi. No copying, no PC, no messing about required. I just tell ROM Manager where the ROM is and job done.

sorry, deleted

Its really easy to put together CWM zip files when developing a ROM. You're most likely in adb pushing and pulling files anyway.. another zip (when developing) is nothing.
CWM also allows you the flexibility to flash without wiping specific partitions.
As stated earlier, you also need a PC to use Odin. A PC running Windows. Some people have Macs, and it is definitely useful when you don't have a PC in front of you, but you can still download a ROM, back up your current data, wipe your phone and flash a completely different ROM - and back - all without a PC, USB cable, Windows, drivers, and the phone button in Odin.

Correction. The tar.md5 file is an ODIN tar file, but with built-in MD5 checksum to verify it before flashing.

Is there any way to explore the ROM? I tried winrar, but then I got stuck on the .img files because they wouldn't open with either undisker/magic iso or daemon tools...
I need to find 2 .odex files to copy to my system/app folder on my SGS2 because I screwed it up using Titanium Backup and uninstalled a system app...
anyway, how to make this from a rom into a system dump?

[SYSTEM_DUMP] True Stock up to JH7

The last time I looked, the only dump for the Captivate on xda was a JF6 version, posted a few weeks ago, and the OP had taken out a few AT&T apps prior to doing it, making it not a true stock. This morning I decided to rip out the content out of the factoryrfs.rfs files from each of the three firmwares we have. I am planning to poke around in these a bit and try my hand at some deodexing, but I have also uploaded them for anyone else to play with them, or to restore any files they might have inadvertently deleted:

Easy to get the files out yourself. Extract the factoryrfs.rfs file out of the firmware tar file, boot into linux and do:
sudo mount -o loop factoryrfs.rfs <any_directory_of_your_choice>
Then copy the files from the mounted location to another, and you have the raw system dump.
Pardon my ignorance but what do these dumps do/provide? How are they different from the firmware from Samsung Firmware?

The firmware from Samsung Firmware contains the applications and default configuration settings packed into a factoryrfs.rfs (which itself is then inside a .tar file). That format is suitable for Odin to flash onto the phone, but you can't access the individual files inside the .rfs. What I did was to unpack the .rfs file, so that the individual files inside are available for whatever you want to do with them. These are not suitable for flashing on the phone as a whole, but someone could take something, modify it and push it to their phone, or make a custom ROM out of it. A simple example is the circle battery indicator mod, where someone modified the framework-res.apk to show percentage, and then made a custom ROM update.zip with it. Without access to the original file, this would not have been possible. Everyone has these files on the phone in one version or another (unless they manually edit or delete them). I just wanted all versions of the files ever released or leaked.

All the apks are inside the zip files, stored the same way they would normally reside on your phone. I am pretty sure the stock Clock widget is a touchwiz widget, and will not work on your wife's Aria. Hell it won't even work on our own phone if you switch to a different launcher.

Clockpackage is in the zip files. Here is the JH3 version for you. Not sure if it'll install. When I try to push to the Android 2.1 Emulator, I get:
adb install ClockPackage.apk
1404 KB/s (0 bytes in 2921292.002s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/ClockPackage.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_MISSING_SHARED_LIBRARY]
Which tells me that the package is probably dependant on TouchWiz 3.0 or some other library already installed on the phone.

I am very new to android, so I am not sure of the implications of this. After further investigation, there is a newer version of the bat files (Auto_Deodexer_2.3), but that version does not do any zipaligning. I added my own bat file to do this after the deodexing, but is what the older version did (zip align every apk in the app directory) bad, and why? If that is the case, which of the apk files should I not zipalign?
On a similar note, the newer bat file asks me to give a bootclasspath. When I give it the values in the init.rc, it skipped deodexing few of the apks in the app directory. When I added twframework.jar to the bootclasspath ahead of framework.jar, it skipped fewer files. I am sure that the older version was buggy, and made mistakes. What should the proper bootclasspath be to not skip deodexing the following files, and to properly deodex the others:
BluetoothOPP.apk+odex
Camera.apk.odex
FactoryTest.apk+odex
MiniDIary.apk+odex
TouchwizCalendar.apk+odex
Figured out the bootclasspath to use. OP and the JH3 file updated. If you downloaded the deodexed JH3 version yesterday, please replace it with the newer version.
What exactly does deodexing and zipaligning do? I understand it makes it faster but how so?

All this is highly theoretical knowlege on my part, so if anyone has better information, feel free to correct me:
Deodexing:
Some of the apks and jar files on the default stock ROM have their code split between apk/odex and jar/odex pairs instead of in a single file. This is done by the developers to supposedly save space, and memory usuage, and to speed up the booting process. Unforunately having separate odex files means that replacing any part of the whole system is much harder. Deodexing the ROM puts the code from the odex files back into the apk and jar files so that every application and jar is self contained and could be replaced with an equivalent.
Zipaligning:
Zipaligning is an optimization of apk files to align all uncompressed data within them on 4-byte boundaries to reduce the memory usage. Since deodexing rebuilt the apks with the code from the odex files, they would have become unaligned. I realigned them to make them optimized again.
This is not necessarily a performance tweak at first, but once you are able to replace the slower parts of the system as a result of it, you should start to get more benefits out of it.
would it be possible to get the allshare package from the deodexed rom? will it work with any other device?

Hulu on Vibrant w/Froyo

I'm on Onyx R3.1 (Froyo).

Have UA set to desktop

What next? It seems to work on other phones, but have not seen any confirmation with Vibrant.

What are you talking about? Hulu blocks access my all mobile phones unless Hulu Plus is purchased.
Isn't Hulu blocking the specific ID of the mobile version of Flash? If that's the case you'll never get around the block, unless you get Hulu Plus, where they specifically allow it.

It works with the entire Macnut series. It was one of the first things I tested in R11. Hopefully this will be the last time I post how to get it to work:
Method 1 - uninstall the old flash player (our don't download it from market) rename the hacked flash to install_flash_player.apk and place it in the /system/app directory and install it (i used root explorer). Then open up a browser window and type about:useragent and hit enter, then select desktop and navigate to hulu and enjoy.
Method 2- open the .zip file of the rom you want and delete the install_flash_player.apk file (if it exists) and place the renamed hacked version in there, then flash the rom. Do the useragent trick and enjoy. Video of method 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KyAzWisQW8
There's also a link to a hulu.apk that does the useragent trick for you on the same page with the hacked flash file. It's kind of buggy but it works and I've been able to use it since Macnut R4.
Edit: here, I'll even link the post in the Nexus forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6583857&postcount=1
Edit 2: It works with Macnut R12 as well. I installed it via method 2 described above.

Have you tried replacing the flash file in the zip for the rom and reflashing yet? Now that I think about it, I did try to get it to work when I briefly tried out obsidian V1 or 2 (can't remember which) and the file wouldn't install, but I didn't test out what would happen if I tried to add it to the zip file.
seems that way but if its truly hulu.com that you want then switch over to mcnut. i didnt beccause i hate the i9000 logo when booting. i know it's a small thing when looking at it from a "i can watch hulu" perspective but .... hey ! what can i say? I like obsidian all around!

If you can find a link to R11, it didn't have the i9000 logo come up at all. You'll have to flash the sd fix and you won't be able to OC either, but it will be free of that logo you don't want.

Don't extract anything. Just open the zip file in whatever program you use (I use WinRAR), find the install_flash_player.apk file, highlight it and delete it. Then take the flashed_fixed.apk file and rename it to install_flash_player.apk and drop it into the folder that same folder. After it's done compressing it you should be good to go. This method has worked for me with the past 4-5 versions of Macnut. I haven't tried it with any other roms though.
Edit: Hang on I'll make a video.
Update - video made, but my connection is crappy so it'll take a while before it's uploaded.

Prepackaged Zips for on the go flashing

As someone who came from a Nexus One, I prefer to flash on the go. I usually take a Zip I have on my phone with ua_redbend in it, edit the update script on the go and drop the appropriate Modem.bin or zImage into it. But for those who haven't done this on the go, all you'll have to do is unpack the tar file most people upload, drop it in the respective ZIP file below using an appropriate program on your phone (unrar, astrozip, astro file manager for a few) and use Clockwork to flash on the go...
Of course, I am not liable for any misflashing that may occur, I just thought that this would help out on the go...
The folder to drop your respective file into will be the kernel_update folder.
Enjoy guys! And flash on the go Go GO!
Edit: Works as well with Infuse. It saved my Bacon when making my 1.0 Infusion so that I could reupload it quickly.
I just download the files to my computer that are flashable with clock and copy them all onto my sd and flash while i drive lol

Idk about JF6 but I've been using the stock OTA UCJH7 as my jump-off for flashing ROMs. I always do it through CWR and (as long as I remember to disable lagfixes) I've never had a problem.
Made my phone a damn good brick by forgetting to disable the lagfix and trying to flash back to stock, but as long as you're not as dumb as me you shouldn't have a problem.
When I first got the phone I spent hours trying to get my computer to recognize it in download mode before eventually coming to the conclusion that I was having hardware problems in my USB ports. I've only ever used Odin to go to stock *once* and I did it on a friend's laptop. So, figure that you and I have about the same access to Odin. I feel pretty confident with this on-the-go method of returning to stock and flashing.
Edit:
Also, now that I think about it, you can probably find a stock JF6 update.zip to be used with CWR. You may even find it somewhere linked to that thread that I posted.
This seems very interesting.
I came from the HTC Legend background and i was always flashing on the go then. I bricked the Cappy when i tried flashing on the go (as i was so used to on the legend).
However, looking at your files, i really have NO IDEA how to use this.
Could you post a step by step guide as to how to use this?
Would be great if you could dummy proof this so users like me won't mis-flash.
At the moment, i'm looking at your files, and i have no idea what order of flashing should another custom rom be.
However, i can only assume that these files are flashed BEFORE the custom ROM?
As in -> recovery -> Kernel & modem -> Custom Rom.
In this order?
These aren't flashable update.zips they're just guts to insert into a pre-made update.zip.
As far as on-the-go flashing with a Captivate... it's the only way to fly ;D
Still confused on how to use this
so the kernel is the zimage file in the update folder, is that correct? and the modem is the modem.bin? those are the files I would need to replace

I think I've got it. So i drop the zimage inside the kernel_update folder and leave the redband thing?
I would very much like to try this but am a bit confuzzled Can I download and flash or do I have to do some adding and things. I"m under the impression that I have to mod some more after I download these... would be quite nice to have these w/ the stock zimage or whatever already in the zip...that's just me..mostly because I'm at work and would really like to reflash a rom right now.
Someone please post a step-by-step guide to using this please...
Am confused and without help right now...
Thanks
i agree a step by step would be great
+1 for a step by step!!!

Odin will not find PDA (*tar,*md5, *smd

Hello every one let me just thank all of you in advance. I just picked up a unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 3 it was a tmobile phone.
My plan is to root the phone so that i can then down load the DarkLord ROM making my Note 3 into a Note 5.
have downloaded all the appropriate file to do this but the issue i am having is Odin will not recognize or find any of my downloaded files when I choose PDA on Odin I have tried re downloading creating folders and even using a different laptop..... I have all the right Samsung drivers and phone is detected I just can find the file.
I lap top is a Dell running Windows 7
Thank you!
As long as the rec9very has .tar on it, should be readable by odin

Is the file located on your computer? The file cannot be located on the phone's internal memory or an SD card inserted in the phone.

the file is saved on my computer, like I said I even downloaded on a different computer...no luck
try a different version of odin and place your file on desktop. After that if you still cant find the file, you should try another one or flash a custom recovery straight on it

Rebranded models

Panasonic eliga switch 4G is the rebranded version of idol3 5.5. Can someone confirm? Can idol 3's Roms be used for eluga switch too?

Most likely they can. It is literally identical to the Idol 3 5.5(a dual sim variant).

I wonder if they have better/newer apps. Anyone found the location of their rom's?
just downloading the rom...will report
so here are some info:
it ocme sin a package of 1.3GB in form of exe file (Engineering Software Download Tool QCT_SP) . It unpacks to temp and contains another exe (among other files) which can be opened in 7zip and includes all partitions in form of .img files. But if i try to decompress it, it got some errors (unexpected end of file) in some img files (system, persist...).
And as I am flasher, I flash the firmware to my device right away.
It ended on 52% with error, so i unpluged my device, rebooted it and all works well so far.
I will make root and do TWRP bakcup.
panasonic name for firmware: EB-90S55EWLv1009
Android: 5.0.2
dialer: 5.1.3.3.0039.0
camera: 5.1.11.0152.0
-also includes alternative launcher (see screenshots).
-Its dual sim firmware.
-all other things look same as stock, havent seen any new settings entry so far.

All useful info. Thanks. You may wish to check the md5sum if you can find it as that's what usually causes me to get unexpected end of file errors. If your browser has the file cached then using a download manager or another browser will get around that. Where did you find the rom? I can check if it gives me the same errors on Linux. System and Boot would be the two most important but I wouldn't expect it to run when it error's at 52% on system.

It runs pretty stockish,so no extra features. And all i can check run normal (wifi,bt, 4G LTE, calling, messaging).
I made TWRP backup of SYSTEM and Boot.

I'm asking for the third time for you to please tell us where you found the rom. As an alternative an upload of the FULL original rom would also be fine. I would like to get full copies of system and boot that don't have errors even if it appears to be working for you.

Thank you. Requests for the rom were in posts 3, 6 and 8.
I did do a search however all I found were reviews on the device. I did have "4g" in my search string as well though.
I'll see how it extracts for me.
i downloaded it twice, extracted circa 10 times. All appear to be good ,but in the flash process it give error and also i cant extract the system.img file. But boot.img i extracted without problems. will post my md5sum in a while in this post.
"EB-90S55EWLv1009.exe" MD5: AD0CA1465758D82782BBF6734AEB3CA3
"Engineering Software Download Tool QCT_SP.exe" MD5: 6553E63778BE4B8844DB7021C633F33E
this "Engineering Software Download Tool QCT_SP.exe" can be opened by 7zip and contains all partitions img files

By "stockish" do you mean it has the lag like ours did or it's fast like the i806 rom?
FYI the linux p7zip extractor can't undo the .exe file...I'll pull it up into 7zip on my windows machine.

Maybe the percentage fail within the upgrade app is just an bug, because all works so far well.. I made a build with arde OC kernel, just for testing purposes. I tried to flash it several time, login into google, tried googple play store, wifi, calling, sms..all seems to work.
i played with it for about 4 hours and it feels like sthe original stock rom(yes with the lags..i think. Its hard to compare for me becaus ei havent touched stock idol3 since 6 months )..i have found no extras in the firmware.
And i also uploaded the panasonic kernel to my google drive kernel folder.
