As someone who came from a Nexus One, I prefer to flash on the go. I usually take a Zip I have on my phone with ua_redbend in it, edit the update script on the go and drop the appropriate Modem.bin or zImage into it. But for those who haven't done this on the go, all you'll have to do is unpack the tar file most people upload, drop it in the respective ZIP file below using an appropriate program on your phone (unrar, astrozip, astro file manager for a few) and use Clockwork to flash on the go...
Of course, I am not liable for any misflashing that may occur, I just thought that this would help out on the go...
The folder to drop your respective file into will be the kernel_update folder.
Enjoy guys! And flash on the go Go GO!
Edit: Works as well with Infuse. It saved my Bacon when making my 1.0 Infusion so that I could reupload it quickly.
I just download the files to my computer that are flashable with clock and copy them all onto my sd and flash while i drive lol

That works too. I just thought that everyone would love to have these.... I love being able to flash anything anytime without sitting down at my computer.
Thanks bedwa, ive been looking for a method like this! All I ever really have to use my ext. Sd for is priority files and a handful of things for post-flash care such as my ever-so-loved launcher 2 apk, setiron's kernel, and a few others so when I help someone flash I put my sd in there phone and install the basics.
So I just drop zimage in w/ no edit?
I appreciate it. Thanks.

Flash a z4 kernel and you are kind of stuffed lol. Well it's more of a nandroid and ROMs on the internal SD on my side of the world.

Download the respective zip and drop it in the "kernel_update" folder in the zip. No other work needed..... I just wanted to make it quicker for others to do this on the go....
so is there a way for this method to restore my captivate back to JF6? i'm on a mac and don't have access to windows all the time, so one click back to JF6 isn't a common option for me
Thats a bit trickier.... I would assume that you could redbend the whole thing, but you would need ALL the partitions and all the proper locations. Though it may be easier with hiemdal.....

Idk about JF6 but I've been using the stock OTA UCJH7 as my jump-off for flashing ROMs. I always do it through CWR and (as long as I remember to disable lagfixes) I've never had a problem.
Made my phone a damn good brick by forgetting to disable the lagfix and trying to flash back to stock, but as long as you're not as dumb as me you shouldn't have a problem.
When I first got the phone I spent hours trying to get my computer to recognize it in download mode before eventually coming to the conclusion that I was having hardware problems in my USB ports. I've only ever used Odin to go to stock *once* and I did it on a friend's laptop. So, figure that you and I have about the same access to Odin. I feel pretty confident with this on-the-go method of returning to stock and flashing.
Edit:
Also, now that I think about it, you can probably find a stock JF6 update.zip to be used with CWR. You may even find it somewhere linked to that thread that I posted.
This seems very interesting.
I came from the HTC Legend background and i was always flashing on the go then. I bricked the Cappy when i tried flashing on the go (as i was so used to on the legend).
However, looking at your files, i really have NO IDEA how to use this.
Could you post a step by step guide as to how to use this?
Would be great if you could dummy proof this so users like me won't mis-flash.
At the moment, i'm looking at your files, and i have no idea what order of flashing should another custom rom be.
However, i can only assume that these files are flashed BEFORE the custom ROM?
As in -> recovery -> Kernel & modem -> Custom Rom.
In this order?
These aren't flashable update.zips they're just guts to insert into a pre-made update.zip.
As far as on-the-go flashing with a Captivate... it's the only way to fly ;D
Still confused on how to use this
so the kernel is the zimage file in the update folder, is that correct? and the modem is the modem.bin? those are the files I would need to replace

I think I've got it. So i drop the zimage inside the kernel_update folder and leave the redband thing?
I would very much like to try this but am a bit confuzzled Can I download and flash or do I have to do some adding and things. I"m under the impression that I have to mod some more after I download these... would be quite nice to have these w/ the stock zimage or whatever already in the zip...that's just me..mostly because I'm at work and would really like to reflash a rom right now.
Someone please post a step-by-step guide to using this please...
Am confused and without help right now...
Thanks
i agree a step by step would be great
+1 for a step by step!!!

I have successfully rooted my Evo today and I have successfully backup my phone with nandroid and then successfully backed up my stock rom. I have now downloaded VaelPak-v2.2-HTC11-3.29.651.5.zip and I am lost from here. I have unzipped the folder but do not know how to get it installed on my Evo. Any assistance will be helpful! Thanks
T.J.
Put the zip on the root of your SD card..boot into recovery...flash the rom...reboot...enjoy.
Detailed sequence is generally in the OP for the rom...
Do not unzip the file!
Place zip file on the root of the SD card and flash in recovery.
Issmer beat me to it!
Just an FYI.. vael is not a SENSE based rom, so you will no longer have use of any HTC widgets.
when you say put it on the root on the sd card... what folder are you talking about putting the zip file into?

Root is the topmost directory - "/". When flashing a new rom, make sure to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache.

in other words dont put it into a folder
hmm so basically your saying just drag or copy the zip file to the actual drive on my computer that is represented by my evo device? and then i will reboot in recovery mode and i will see a wipe option? cache and dalvik option? thanks so much seriously

Yep. Just put the zip on the card. Go into recovery. Wipe. Flash and reboot!
ok i am going to try it right now. what about later having to unzip the zip file and dragging specific files to the sd card to get certain things to work on my new rom? i read this somewhere
This us why you should read before you root, everything thats in the zip will be installed onto the phone. There is no need to unzip unless you know what your doing. Additional apps can be downloaded from the market or installed by a file manager.
ok it was a success. i am back up and running and it really looks great. all of my apps are gone!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what the wipe does. If you flash a lot (like I do) then get Titanium Backup Pro, probably the best app I've ever bought. It'll save you a headache in the future.

No offense to the OP but this made me chuckle. It reminds me back when i would talk people through doing a windows restore. i would get this same type of response no matter how many times i told them what a restore would do and to back up files. It was always ok windows is booted ... hey all my programs and pictures are gone! ho do it get them back.

A little off topic, but this doesn't make me chuckle as much as people who reply on a new rom thread and say "this rom is great. One problem though is wifi no longer works. Nor does the camera, gps and I can't make calls. But I love the rom so far." Or even better, "I love this rom. Super smooth. One issue though, when trying to flash it I get error at line 5 and then the phone sits at the splash screen."

OK, finally decided to pass on to a custom ROM, and the choice fell on sunaabh 1.1
Now the question is, I downloaded the ROM and I see it's a standard zip file. Is it possible to further customize it by removing/substituting/adding/updating files in the correct folders, and then flash it normally?
As an example, update the hosts file, removing the useless HTC apps, preinstalling titanium or any other app I like?
If it is possible, should I unzip the ROM, do my things, and zip it back, or does it require anything special?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, it should be as simple as that. Most likely you do not need to re-sign the rom.zip since you're already using a custom recovery (assuming you have rooted your phone), but I signed mine anyway, so I didn't get to confirm it myself. Good luck and have fun!

You can do exactly that. Open it up, mess around, making sure everything stays in the correct folder, zip it back up, and you're done. No need to sign if you're on Clockworkmod recovery.
Getting ready to do the Clean ROM flash and I have a few questions:

2. How do I boot into recovery?
I have twrp installed and phone's rooted. Just need to know the button config. to go into recovery to follow the installation steps. TY

LOL! Sorry I had too. Someone needs there Coffee You copy the rom to your phones storage like where your pictures,Music, and stuff are at. They didnt say anything about a storage folder.
and 2. Download an app called reboot recovery in the market place
You should be cautious when flashing anything if you were looking for a "Storage" folder.

LOL I know, I feel like a total noob for even asking. I have to have instructions literally step for step or else I lose confidence and don't follow through. I'm coming from an SGS2 that I rooted and messed with for the 1st month and never flashed anything since, so I'm pretty much starting over with this ROM stuff. Thanks for the help though!
EDIT: I'm gonna ask another noob question: Do I copy just the img file or the META & System folders too?

Dude! Never be afraid to ask (but if the answers are on the website and you didn't do a proper search, expect flame on!).
Anyway, assuming you are on AT&T, you should have downloaded a file called CleanROM-1.1.zip . If you didn't get that one, go here http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=464 and download it. Check the MD5 to ensure the file is not corrupt. Do not unzip the file! Just transfer the file onto your phone - it doesn't really matter where, just remember where you put it. Then reboot into recovery (assuming you have already installed TWRP) using whatever app you like (I prefer GooManager), click Install, navigate to the rom you just put on your phone and you're good to go.
Good luck!

I am on 4.4.2, rooted, goldeneye26 rom.
I am an idiot, I backed up everything with TB, but before I got around to copying it to my computer, I formated my sdcard because it was having issues
I removed some bloatware and now my phone does not rotate anymore. The issue seems to be tied to the samsung hub being removed
I found this thread, but for a different device, I tried the idea mentioned, getting a file from the rom's zip and moving it to the device, but it did not work for me. ( I was able to move it by getting write permission )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2644293
There is a post later on in there that has a download to a zip file...the zip file contains a library file like in the first link, but also has a META-INF folder with a couple files, I could not find this folder on my phone, could this be something I clash with safestrap since it is a zip?

The META-inf will not be on your phone. In it is what tells the zip file what to do. It is flashable on your phone but I don't know of it will work or not.

If you use FX File Explorer and the root add on it will set the permissions for you on your apps. Other files like initd files and such need the permissions manually elevated but for apps like these it's automatic. Don't forget to reboot after copying the files over.

so i think i figured out part of the problem. I didnt use the stock rom to pull them from, it was the syndicate rom ( i apparently dont know how to read when i click things). I have the G900VVRU1ANHA_G900VVZW1ANHA_VZW.zip which contains a .tar.md5 inside. Without flashing this, using odin, to my S5 how can i access the system files to pull the apk and odex? i tried one of the guides in a thread to open the tar.md5 as a .img.ext4 and then mounting the image using DiskInternals Linux Reader but it could not get the file to open after mounting it. Now im REALLY lost as to what i should do, and im just fingers crossed that replacing those 2 files is going to enable my NFC again. (im assuming so since its all that i touched, but my knowledge in this department is limited)
thanks again for all the help, i usually just search for days for answers but with this im coming up blank!
Okay, so i downloaded the /apps/ zip from this thread and copied them from my pc to my phone. Using ES File Explorer i moved them to the /system/app/ folder. They originally had rwx rwx r permissions after the move, i changed that to rw r r and rebooted. Post reboot, attempted to enable nfc through the quick menu to no avail, going into the setting and turning it on the slider turns to green but the NFC icon does not show in the notification panel, I cant scan any NFC tags, and after exiting settings and going back into them the NFC setting has reset itself to off every time. I am now at a complete loss of what to try next.
just a ps: when running syndicate rom in slot 1 (safestrap) i was able to get NFC turned on and working just fine.
