HTC Sense - Galaxy S II General

I'm liking how quick things are going with this phone (already rooted and the bootloader is unlocked).
So, anyone attempting to port HTC sense 2.1 (or even 3.0 once the port to the WVGA-based DHD/HD2 phones is complete). touchwhiz4 is a nice improvement over the old one but let’s face it, it does not have a chance competing against the stuff HTC is making with Sense.
the ROM community development for the first S was a bit disappointing and am hoping things are much better this time round.

Not many people have the phone yet remember.
Also, the dev community for the original is excellent. Loads of ports!

Only on the sim free models, any purchased on a contract are stuck with locked bootloaders! Had an arc, sold it! (To be honest it was just a temp after I sold my sgs 1 and was waiting for the sgs 2)
And back on the subject of sense, I like the widgets and thats about it. I need toggles for wifi in the statusbar. prefer stock lockscreens and dont particularly like the launcher, I usually used to use ADW or launcher pro on my DHD back in the week I owned it for :S

maybe this thread belonged better in the development forum.

the only real advantage the Sensation has over the GS2 is the comunity development and the UI. porting Sense3.0 would be a MAJOR win. not sure why so many people in the poll are not interested in seeing it happen

Because sense is a memory/battery hog, for some people the best experience is created by launcherpro, zeam or adw launcher(ex) Personally I tried sense, miui and cm7 but so far I prefer my own settings and setups. (launcherpro plus with custom wallpapers/widgets and transparent shortcuts) Cm7 might eventually become faster than stock but will not have samsungs tweaks/audiocodex/hardware acceleration and Miui really has to be your cup of tea. Same goes for sense IMO, besides I think the appdrawer and bars are pretty ugly and could use some transparency, but thats my opinion.

Still just rumors but here you go
http://nexus404.com/Blog/2010/07/23...oid-3-0-gingerbread-won’t-support-custom-uis/
From what I've seen recently, Gingerbread will be 2.3, 2.4, or something like that. Honeycomb is now 3.0. Everything I've read says that Gingerbread won't be a huge change from Froyo and that Honeycomb will become available, first on tablets with phones to follow, early next year. All still just speculation though.

Not really but a lot of Gingerbread rumors were spun to hell.
1) Techcrunch was the originator of the no skin rumor. All they said was that a couple of sources close to the Android team told them that Gingerbread's UI/UX aims to be so good that skins would become obsolete. They never said that skins were banned. In fact, banning skins would completely break the open source nature of the AOSP. But of course a couple of blogs spun this as meaning that Sense/Touchwiz/etc was dead.
2) The Gingerbread minimum required specs - like it requiring a 1GHz CPU, etc. They were deemed false by Google. Of course you still have idiots claiming that the G2 w/ it's faster 800 MHz CPU is ineligible for Gingerbread.
I believe that Gingerbread will be amazing and will finally surpass iOS in UI/UX. But I also believe that HTC's software/design team is lead by a bunch of idiots that think they can out perform Google's team. Hence why I think Sense wont die.

I don't get what you are trying to say.
he is saying that he buys in to the tech blogs (which have huge reputations for spreading many false or spun rumors) that gingerbread (or 3.0) will be so amazing that nothing done previously will compare and everyone will need to start developing mods based on this new version from scratch. Also that companies that have spent millions on there "us" will drop them completely even though they have promoted them as part of there brand and have many people who really like them.
Personally i don't see it happening a lot of the same hype came while waiting for froyo. I wouldn't call it on the level of the "GODS" compared to 2.1. I personally remove as much of sense as possible from roms as is so for me it would just make my job easier however i dont see it happening logically speaking.
You can rest assured that HTC will continue to put Sense on their phones - even after Gingerbread, Honeycomb, etc...
They just completely revamped Sense (Desire HD).
Blur, Touchwiz... I don't know - but I would put money on HTC Sense still being there in the future. I don't have a link but I thought that I read somewhere that HTC has already said as much.
Google stated its coming up with something state of the art that will make sense obsoleet. However, when HTC pushes its 3.0 Android's out the door it will have some sort of sense no doubt. Also try to read and understand what google is writing. They are saying current launchers/sense is obsoleet and that it wont be necessary for gingerbread. They arnt saying futur launchers wont come out and improve on what they are building. The article I read clearly can be missleading if you are just skimming through it but if you actually take the time to read it you will see the words they use discribe only current launchers and sense being not needed.
Oh and my wifes HERO has 2.2 thanks to CM6 It works just as well as the Evo version but its performance settings seriously need to remain untouched unless you are willing to do several test because things like JIT can actually slow that phoen down.

It depends on how you look at it. If you go by the rumors, Gingerbread isn't going to add/improve on the current API/functionality of Android if at all. Instead it'll be a major upgrade to the UI/UX. Up until now we've seen minor/gradual improvements, this release I believe, we'll be a major visual step.
So even though it'll internally be very similar to Froyo, the UI we'll be different enough for us to be wowed and feel like we're using something completely new.
Kinda funny you bring this up cause I just read another thread in Q/A where some guy was asking for 2.1 roms cause he didn't like 2.2 so he wanted to go back. Interesting reading day so far....

Porting official Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM to Nexus S for Touchwiz

Hey guys.
As you already know, official Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM released.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009177
That means we've got a "Gingerbread ROM with Touchwiz UI" !
So let's encourage developers to port it to Nexus S
That would be soooo awesome, but at this point the MT3G has more development than the Nexus...they even have honeycomb.
this topic made me smile .. Before the nexus s I owned a galaxy s .. lots and lots of people there want an aosp looking rom and want to get rid of touchwiz asap .. And now I ahve a nexus S with the aosp I have been wanting for so long and see a topic requesting touch wiz

Same here. Go figure...
However, CM7 already has all it takes to make your phone look a lot like TouchWiz. It has the statusbar widgets, and the launcher can be customized to look a great deal like it. Is it the home widgets? Cause I'm sure there must be plenty of alternatives in the Market.
Heck, CM7 + ADW is even far more customizable. I don't see a reason why anyone would need TouchWiz at this point.
the reason people sold their Galaxy S to nexus S is because of the stupid touch wiz. and you want people to bring it ? i hate you from my heart

Pretty sure it was Samsung's incompetence of releasing Android 2.2 in a timely fashion and ROMs basing off Samsung internal leaks with kernels that weren't open-sourced.
I personally don't care if someone ports TouchWiz. If they do, then great. I won't be using it but trying it out to play around with. There's a difference between requesting and something actually being done.
I would definitely like to have the choice of trying out Gingerbread TouchWiz. I've noticed that the Nexus S doesn't really have as much roms as I thought it would have. Maybe its because 2.3 is the latest software and it would defeat the purpose of putting 2.2 sense, 2.2 blur etc or its simply the fact that devs are holding out for dual core and quad core phones.

Most likely because of 2.2 and 2.3. Porting another FrameWork takes a lot of work. It's not that easy to do especially to get it working as a daily driver

Most people are obsessed with speed and latest and greatest, not what offers the most. They say TouchWiz is buggy but so is Gingerbread...obviously I could go on and on.
Why is there so much hostility with reference to Nexus S and development? Why do people consider the Nexus S inferior and not worthy of ROM development? It's a phone, people own it. If all you do is bash the phone and the community, what is your endgame? I say, the more ROMs the better, no matter what they are. And if development dies because of lack of interest, so be it, but let the natural course of the device play out.

That's not the issue anymore will those roms. Not to mention the only leg nexus has up the captivate is nfc and vanilla android. I like the touchwiz icons, maybe it is because i also use an iphone 4, but those stock app icons make me want to scream
And judging from the 2.3.3 has bricked my gps thread, i am getting less and less excited about owning a nexus s once it arrives with 850mhz 3g bands. Looks like samsung still cant get the gps right..now to see if they did something to the gs2.

Try the MIUI rom I think it's the rom that you're looking for.
@allgamer: in cm7 the hardware encoding actually works. 720p I smooth but no audio is being outputted. That's the only thing that needs to be fixed. Regular videos are fine.

The only reason I hated TouchWiz was because of bloatware, and Samsung's closed source issue which hindered development. Other than that, the UI looks great to me. The blue accents are nice and is easier to view than the gloomy green of the NS. Codecs are a major plus. The launcher is acceptable. My reason for moving to the NS is for CM7 as well as Google updates. Therefore, I'm all for porting the Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM.

AOSP on GS2

Buy something else. With AOSP you will lose some critical functionality of this phone. All of them in Multimedia dept. You loose fantastic code support. That's USP of sgs2.
From early previews TWUI 4 seems to be very much refined though.

That's the USP for you.
For me, it's the hardware: thin, sleek, light. Dual-core. HDMI (or equivalent) +++ Unlockable boot-loader.
The hardware of the rival phones isn't as good and, quite a few manufacturers are in full lock-down mode these days.
Well, that was my thought exactly, that removing Touchwiz will remove all of the cool features and application support. To perhaps better serve your needs, it would be cooler to swap the launcher as suggested by many wise people here. This will give you a better UX while retaining the app support.

I'm still not sure if i'll buy it, as for the so called "critical functionality", i would happily give them up and get rid of the crapware that i dont need, and head for the market for added functionality.
Well, since it is Android, you are more than welcome to do so. Although, more than the critical functionality, the features you are PAYING for are being stripped away. It would be better that you find a Rom that adds these features (motion sensing, etc.) while removing the "Crapware" from the device.
Even if the SGS doesn't have a fully functional cyanogenmod, it has lot's of ROM's that remove touchwiz and crapware.
And CM7 is closer than ever from being stable on SGS, and there's actually a MIUI beta. I would say that the SGS2 will have a good dev support and we'll have a lot of choices in ROM's.
If not, there's always launchers like ADW, launcherpro, Regina...
That should be the least of your worries.

You are paying heavy premium for these features.
With AOSP, you will lose all proprietary samsung apps and features. That includes codecs, Media player post processing functionality and probably MHL functionality.
Also all Samsung drivers will be lost that mean lots of work for developers to get camera working right, bluetooth, wifi working right.
By the time ASOP which is actually usable comes out, it will be time for next generation hardware.
i was wishing for the ability to use bt joypads to play me some emus but i guess its a no go then

i hope samsung will release the drivers
I'd also much rather have an AOSP build, as I just don't like any of the custom overlays, never mind the included bloat- and crapware. Heck, if I had anything to say Android phones would ship without an OS and there'd be a ton (metric, of course) of distribution to choose from.
And no, we're not paying a premium for these "features", since one cannot buy the same (or even similar) hardware without them, for less.

But then that would require some standardization. Or every phone maker will have to issue set of drivers that users will have to bake themselves into the rom before flashing the same.
I dont think phone industry is or will be ready for that any time soon.
And you are paying for everything that comes on phone whether you like it or not. Everything costs something and it comes out of your pocket (or Samsung on some parts for superiority claims ).
AOSP usually rolls out faster for HTC phones (most of which share same DNA inside ) or sister devices of Google devices as its much easier.
Expecting AOSP for something as heavily modified as Galaxy S range quickly is unrealistic.
If your beef is against just TWUI launcher, its relatively easy to roll back to stock android launcher by just defaulting to stock android home (easy to do from Manage Applications ).
Other than the launcher (which can be changed in seconds), TouchWiz is awesome.
I used CM7 for about an hour before I sorely missed the Samsung Contacts, Camera, Calculator, Dialer and Calendar.

I have no objection to touchwiz myself, except for one thing: I get REALLY excited by the innovations Google brings with each new version of Android. Owning the nexus 1 was/is amazing from that perspective. Every new, brilliant feature, is instantly yours.
Having said that, I like some of the new things Samsung are doing with their skin. I like the gyroscope actions and the resizeable widgets.
I guess what I want is a Nexus S2
I'm going to wait until after Google I/O to see if rumours of a new Nexus surface. If not, it'll be the Galaxy S2 for me. It is a beautiful device.

I have no objection to touchwiz myself, except for one thing: I get REALLY excited by the innovations Google brings with each new version of Android. Owning the nexus 1 was/is amazing from that perspective. Every new, brilliant feature, is instantly yours.

Even if the phone runs stock Android, you're still not guaranteed updates.
Honestly the whole update thing is a mess anyway.
Samsung provided Gingerbread for the i9000 already, so they have a good track record on updates.

Well, to each his own. But that's what I like about Android - choice. There's something for everyone.

That's true. The only thing stock does in that respect is make updates a little easier.

You're right about the GB update, even though it was pulled again, but their track record is still pretty bad. Let's all hope it isn't just a fluke.
Bottom line is that most phone vendors care about selling new hardware, for them, updates are a mixed blessing. Too few and nobody will buy their current phones, too many and nobody will want to buy the new model.

To developers or cookers! Some humble suggestions!

First let me take opportunity to thank all developers, cookers, kernel makers, app makers, theme makers and everyone for their outstanding job for our beloved SII!
I guess we all agree that the most wanted / sophisticated / beautiful (but not fastest) user interface is the HTC sense! And i know that there's a project ongoing to try to port a HTC sense 3.0 rom on our phone and that is really great!
However today i was watching the motorolla RAZR review and i kind of liked the user interface (dunno if it's still like the original motoblur)! I think it may be fair to give it a shot!
Besides there's the Sony Ericson user interface (timescape) which evolved beautifully IMHO in the latest devices! It looks classy IMHO!
There's also the LG user interface which doesn't look (at least from the looks) so attractive! It may look like touchwiz!!!
And i know there's a lot more!
So i thought! Hey why not port these ROMS to our S2!
I know there's a lot of launchers for android in the market! But i'm not talking only about the launcher, it's it and the widgets, the apps, the colors, the looks and the whole user experience!
So i think it might be a good idea if some devs-cookers try to port these systems in our phones or at least port part of it (maybe launcher and widgets and apps etc..)!
I think these might turn to be some special and challenging ports! I believe that few"non-routine" devs might give it a shot! (Actually i hope so).
PS: Please don't flame, or reply rude answers, these are simply some ideas; if you can't be helpful that's OK! But at least don't be unhelpful!

I agree with op.It would be great to see razr ui

Agreed. To have a selection of any of the above mentioned would be cool. The best UIs with the best hardware of the GS2

As per your request, I am not being rude, flaming nor being unhelpful, but I'd like to know your factual basis for what I interpret as a gross generalisation?
I personally wouldn't use any of your adjectives to describe Sense.
So who are all these people who concur with your opinion of sophistication etc?
Again, I stress I'm not hating - just at a loss to see how you can justify this statement.
tbh since ICS launch i doubt your going to find many interested, but i'm still all for it. my wish is someone would make an app to make using any widget possible, on any launcher, and any rom. that would be amazing.
I'd certainly be interested in playing with a port of Sony's latest Timescape UI & social network integration apps... never been much of a fan of HTC Sense though...

Ok man you're right! Not everyone likes sense!
However, if we want to rely on most users opinion, and especially on professional reviews (say endgaget, gsmarena, etc...) they all say that the best custom user interface for android is htc sense!
Personally, I had htc desirehd running sense 3.5 and it was wonderful!
Again you're right I shouldn't have generalized!

actually lately engadget has been dissing sense, and i had the inspire (the U.S. Version of the desire hd) and thought sense 3.5 was a step down and that the sensation XE, OG Sensation, etc sense 3.0 was the best. it still wasn't perfect and i preferred aosp and touchiwz which is why i got my at&t s2

Sorry, I find Sense tacky and slow, with some weird UI elements, like the shiny sliding tabs.
Starting with ICS, they should make Sense an optional install after initial setup. Same goes to touchwiz, blur, timescape etc.

I find sense laggy and a resource hog, overall making it a bad software product. Anyways not much interest really for either UIs. Please do no take this personally any dev, but a lot here are not actually skilled enough to achieve a port, some do not even know how to code much less. There are some, but it is few.

I know you meant it partly in jest, but in reality we already have the SGS2, we just need Razr firmware and a dedicated hacker!
Guys unless you are going to be able to hack the proprietary files to tun on none supported devices it is not going to happen. Like with sense. It looks for HTC framework files and HTC drivers. Some of the best hackers here have tried and without the needed framework files and drivers it doesn't work. Not to mention the last time some one even got close they got a C&D order from HTC. So even it it could be done HTC would never allow it and MOTO would do the same

Can anyone expect any HTC Sense based ROMS available for Nexus 4 sooner or later?

tiitle is self explanatory, just curious coming from a HTC wether (because im hell bent on buying nexus 4 due to spec for the price plus google update support) we will see any HTC Sense UI based roms?
Short answer: No. Sense is an HTC skin job, this is an LG.
Second: Why the hell would you do that?
Highly doubt it. People usually get nexus devices for the pure stock Android experience and having skins like HTC sense just ruins it. That's why we didn't see any FULL port for Galaxy nexus. Just unfinished ports that nobody used as daily driver
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
It's possible, I remember there being a project to try and get sense on the GNex, but it would probably take a long time since there aren't many people who want it so the number of developers and testers would be small.
Here's a video of a pre beta that came out - video
No. Its horrible and worse. You will like stock.

if you really want htc skin then get the htc one x+
After all the time I spent to make my s3 work and look like aosp on the nexus, including the on screen button with the hardware ones disabled, now that I've sold it for the nexus, it seems just mental to apply sense or whatever else interface ...to me at least

People have been trying for a long time now to port Sense to various phones (Sense4All etc). Though there has been progress, it can't even be considered beta yet. So if getting Sense is a concern to you, don't buy the N4. Safe to say, its not gonna happen.

This. One X is a much better looking phone anyway. And it may not be quite as powerful, but it's easily in the same league.
I really hope so. While stock Android is nice, it would be great to have options. Sense 4 would freaking fly on this phone.

There's no reason why it couldn't, if there was a few developers that really really wanted to do it, it's possible. It's just extremely unlikely.
Would love to see a port of the Sense 4+ keyboard though. IMHO, it's better than stock (even stock 4.2).
I think Sense5 would be fun to play with. Sure most Google fan-boys don't like it, but it's still nice; just needs refinement (specifically for battery use).
i would definitely flash a sense rom on the nexus... plain AOSP looks a bit dud after a while.
If you like HTC crap (I own an HTC, and personally hate them for their policies, but that's another story..) so much, go for the OX+, which is fine.
There is a lot of personal opinion based guestimation here. I thought google flagships released all the device information to the public so that it would be easy to make roms. I remember the good ol days of the nexus 1 when if you got bored of plain jane you could toss sense on it. Get bored with that toss cyan on it. Get bored with that, here is a port for a different phone, and so on. Sense has GREAT photography features but it does use up a LOT of memory. Looks are a matter of taste though. If you love clean and simple and no bells and whistles then light weight roms are where its at. Sense comes with plenty of spaces filled in though. It truly is a Skin job looking modern and sleek. That's my 2 cents I guess.
so the short and most conclusive answer is: Its possible.
No it is not possible. Sense requires HTC drivers and frameworks. Many great devs have tried over the years and they all end up mostly not working for things like data, camera and things like that.
Sense is not a skin on top of android it is a whole different version of android like a different linux distro with closed sourced files that will only run on HTC devices.
Wanna switch phones man, sense sucks and stick with what you got.. I have HTC and 95% of the time I'm on a CM10 rom
Highly doubt it'll ever happen.
