Greetings,
I want to know your opinion .. Which Kernel do you prefer and why ??
- ElBartoME 2.6.32.9 #1 OR
- michyprima's R11 OR
- Darkstone OR
- Hastarin R7.1
-----> Currently i am using Hastarin R7.1 ... Tell me your experience ...?
Thanks ...
each dev puts hard work into each build. u shouldnt single out any of them by posting this poll.
there is no "best" kernel as there are good points in all of them and together they have created their own style of working.
All of the kernels are have similar tweaks so alot of things are the same i.e darkstones graphics tweaks and michys ext batteries.
I think that this would need to be a "which kernel do you prefer" rather than a best thread as this all falls down to preference. I for example prefer michy's kernel as i like having the higher clock speed and it has never let me down. I have tried others but keep coming back to michy's

i didn`t mean any insult for any dev .. title changed !
I prefer michyprima's R11 as I find that current evo kernels break more things than they fix.
Please move this to Android general?

I see how this topic could become helpful. It could signal out which kernel is the most used, eventually, kernel devs could move from their stuck-up ways and work together on whichever kernel people consider to be better/more stable.
I'm on Matt 1.8 and his kernel had constant problems with data dropping and very frequent 2-3 second freezes that were just abnoxious.
I switched to hastarin 4.1 and then 7.1 and I wouldn't go back. My device's been on Android only ever since and it's staying that way.
agreed.
this is a bit of an odd issue, because personally I really don't like the Hastarin R7.1 kernels, and the darkstone ones work beautifully, but clearly that isn't the case, regarding the fact that that's the most popular one.
in retrospect, this probably isn't a very good idea for a thread, because its not going to show anyone which kernel to get, because they will most likely get a different experience to others

Michy Evo R0
I actually like the Michy Evo R0 kernel. For me all the nexus one based kernels have the problem of freezing up if you let it go to standby with wifi on, once it happens you don't have much choice but to wait until it unfreezes. All the Evo kernels have the problem with the delayed flash, but that's a smaller problem for me.
I don't think telling devs they are stuck up is a good idea. I personally use which ever I wanna try. It gives them each good feedback. They make changes and those fixes spread to other kernals.

Im running Hastarin´s (4.1 or 5 i believe) in Mattc´s 1.8, im not sure which kernel was on that one, but im getting great results with this combination, standby drain goes down to 5ma at some points, and running with no SOD, almost none touch screen freezing, really minimal, and when they occurr it gets recovered pretty fast, im really happy with it, no 3G data for me, wifi works great though.
SLDS.
PS: Sorry about my english, i hope i made sense lol
I'm using Hastarin 4.1 ... didn't decide yet to move to 7.1 till most of users say it's OK.
I tried MichyPrima as well to see if it solves the data connection issues but turned out to be almost same performance like Hastarin's.

I agree. This is why I didn't upgrade to Froyostone 3.1. Seems that all current issues still exists + delayed camera flash due to the Evo Kernel
Hastarin's 7.1 drops data like a son of a *****. I ripped the one out of Shubcraft 1.5... Never had a drop signal once.
Just go to advanced wifi settings and set wifi sleep to never

Do'h! Why didn't I think of that? Of course now that I've tried the desire HD builds I really really really want to use that, but that camera doesn't work at all.
Now that I think about it, kernel code is getting better all the time, this poll really is premature. Maybe 6 months from now we can really decide.

Just tried this with Michy R11 but unfortunately it doesn't fix the problem. Still freezes for a long time when I left the wifi on. Oh well, more the reason to try more builds
We know why the scroll lag is a problem but there is no progress with it for nearly a month so I decided to waste some time capturing the phenomenon on video. Here is a comparison between michyprima's old r0 build (September, 24) and current hastarin's r7.4 (in fact, all both michyprima's and hastarin's kernels after r0 and r4.1 respectively are affected with this problem on my device; bare kernel from netripper.com is affected too, so the reason is there):
michyprima r0: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiPkdV7SLVA
hastarin r7.4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te8FUNTgxOE
UPD: fixed hastarin r7.5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0w7fHSHWwY
The question is, is it possible to make a kernel with reverted changes to touchscreen driver (or whatever causes the lag)? Is it possible for me to do it myself? I don't know a thing about kernel code but.. I'm really eager to get all the progress gained by devs in last 20 days and I really can't be happy with it because of the horrible screen lag which besides being ugly doesn't allow to use the keyboard smoothly.
Sorry for my English and thanks for your time and efforts. I'll be happy to find a solution.
Thanks to devs again.
UPDATE 1:
Most people confirmed having this issue with hastarin's r4.1 to r7.4 kernels, though there are people who seem to not have it at all. I share memin1857's guess that the reason could be existence of two types of hardware digitizers, one of which shows the lag with latest kernel from git, and the other doesn't.
Thanks to hastarin, this issue is settled for now. And even more, with his r7.5 kernel the lag on my device is even far less than it was in r4.1! I'm very happy now guys Thank you for help! If I have some time in the evening, I'll shoot another video with a demo of r7.5 behavior for comparison.
UPDATE 2:
I've added a video with demonstration of scrolling with hastarin r7.5 on my device.
Scroll lag is eliminated. Now I'm curious if it is possible to increase the polling rate of digitizer (I guess it is around 30 Hz now) to attain smooth scrolling, like on iPhone or Galaxy S. Because with current kernels it doesn't lag anymore, but it is still choppy. What can you say about this, devs?
have you tried michyprima r11? it doesn't suffer the lag you have shown here
r11, is that a nexus kernel? The new kernels fixes Camera flash on EVO builds etc.. but the screen lag is dreadful

Yeah, I tried. Actually I used it before sticking with michuprima's r0 on EVO base. And I continue using the r0. But the point is that I miss all the progress coming with newer kernels because of the scroll lag I can't accept.
I've noticed this trend as well!
Scroll lag is becoming a problem for me. It feels like you have to move a heavy rock to start scrolling. It's not easy. It's annoying.
Hastrin's new kernels are good, but suffer from this scroll lag, something so important for everyday use.
Michy's Kernels suffer from blank screen issues where it takes 5 seconds to recover.
It's annoying.
Best kernel I've found was Hastrin 4.1
It's not as powerful, but it certainly most stable.
So you'll be attempting to fix the scroll lag ? I look forward to your developments

Some dev keep saying that there is no scroll-lag and is probably SD-card related. Well, there IS actually a problem with the new kernels.
I've watched the videos and I'm not getting that lag with hastarin 7.4 european hd2
There are two types of touchscreen (digitizers) for hd2. Maybe that is the reason. If you try to buy hd2 digitizer from ebay you will see the hardware is different.
http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-Screen-Digi...Accessories&hash=item1c15714a07#ht_3061wt_905
http://cgi.ebay.com/new-Touch-Scree...Accessories&hash=item335bb268b2#ht_3579wt_905
Maybe the chips/controllers are the same I don't know, but the connector is definitely different. My post is pure guessing.
Winmo has lower lag than both videos.
I try with multitouch visualizer 2 app from market and lag is only with scrolling. Tap (touching the screen) is immediately registered.
i have tmous and i dont have any lags
I am using 7.4 and there is no lag.
I don't see it as a big deal. Maybe the devs don't see it as a big

Yea that bs. I have a class 2,4,6 and they all have lag with the new kernels. Old kernels they are fine. I think they need to come up with a new tree to work off of.
could it be caused by this http://gitorious.org/linux-on-wince...mmit/a0fc58df35602d8c76cc4fa586b8b1865da3b92a ?
it's the commit that made ts work on nand
try reverting that commit and compiling the kernel then, maybe it will restore its responsiveness
Rajko, how come they have not figured out the screen wakeup issue?
I can confirm I get the same lag if I go any higher than hastarin 4.1.
edit: eu version.

I do agree with your topic, at least with a 75% of your point of view. Last kernels has not made a big difference from previous ones, even we have left older where camera and flash works perfectly with no lags... we need to wait a little more, maybe now with the release from HTC of new kernels, to have a significant improve. For me the best kernels are the ones provided by Darkstone.
lol
+1, i have notice this, a few days ago, in MIUI build, check the kernel.

I've been hearing a lot about a ROM called Baked Snack and have tried to do some research on it to no avail. I would like to know more about the latest version Baked Snack 1.3 but am unable to. Has anyone tried this? How is the battery life/performance?
Thanks,
P.S. Hope this thread survives, I know it seems to be a touchy subject on XDA.

I'm using it. Works pretty well. Has some issues (what ROM doesn't?). Mostly the Launcher (doesn't matter which launcher) will crash and you have to push the "Force Close" button. It then recovers almost instantly and is fine for awhile again.
Honestly, even though it can run at 1.3GHz and you can surely measure the difference in benchmark, I really don't notice any difference in speed. Maybe some very resource demanding app might be faster on this ROM as compared to the stock ROM, I just didn't notice any lagging on either ROM.
Slingplayer doesn't work just right as often the sound and video isn't synched, but apparently the problem isn't the slower processor speed as the performance is the same at 1.0 and 1.3 GHz.
I must say I'm kinda miffed at Hero (the developer) as he has a website with a forum. You have to donate to gain access to his forum which I have. I cannot get him to respond to my requests to grant access to his forum. I'd consider donating more that the minimum but not until he starts responding and allows me access to his forum.
i used it for a while. its pretty sharp, totally themed with a black/green concept. very fast, snappy ROM. my phone kept freezing when OCed to 1.3 but runs like a champ at 1.2.
i switched to bubs aosp magic 0.4.1 to try out the more stock aosp android feel but kept the baked snack kernel for a while.
i actually then ran some linpack tests and switched to phoenix 1.4.3 to compare and the phoenix just barely edged it out with those tests (also OCed to 1.2) which surprised me!
overall i really liked the baked snack ROM, VVM works fine (doesnt on AOSP ROMs) but it was time to try something else out. i'd give it a shot, i might go back to it at some point it really is a cool ROM.
EDIT: i never had launcher or anything else FC on me, was very stable.
Thanks for the replys, have you noticed anything about battery life? I'm getting currently around 16 hrs with light to moderate use using fluffkernel ver. C.
I'm running a modified version of 1.3 with the mix up kernel. Its the most stable combo I have tried. I got a couple more bus to work out and then I will be releasing my version to the public

Personally, im stable @ 1.3 and if speed is your thing i get an avg of 10.5s on Linpack with the highest being 10.9xx...all in all is pretty good but everyone has there preferences. One more thing i will say, i don't agree without his forum setup/donation but hero has replied fairly quickly to me

As both CM7 and MIUI have really matured over the last weeks and samsung is still not able to get to develop a stable gingerbread version I think its time to have a deeper look into the alternatives. What do you think, what is the best solution for the sgs right now? please also post experiences, but really valuable I guess are only experiences with current CM7 or MIUI versions!
Best
Tobi
Samsung gingerbread is as stable, or more, than CM7/MIUI, meaning none is 100% stable, what is your problem...
Samsung roms are better for now
All of them has a special thing...
Now I am using Gelnet Miui rom and it is fantastic an also stable!
You should try it
cm7 and miui are both very fast, even with lagfix on samsung roms you can see minor lags but...
cm7 and miui have bugs that made me go back to samsung custom rom.
the camera does not work even regular picture looks bad sometimes, battery drain in cm7 is also worst than any bug samsung has, if the camera and the battery does not bother you so you can give it a try.
another reason i go back to samsung rom is the brightness change from the notification bar and the swype left for calls in contacts or logs (very usefull while you are driving).

I've just joined CM7 and have had slightly better battery power and no camera issues at all. I'm really impressed with the whole package. I can't imagine going back to stock ROM. Everything is stable and fast.

CM7 is very stable on my phone, better than last official ROM, so I keep it.
I installed both of them on my phone. CM7 had radio problem which didnt work (although there are CM7 radio patch which could be flashed). MIUI had a problem with getting network. Kept getting SOS signal only. Tried flashing 2-3 different MIUI roms and all of them had this problem of no network. Think since there are so many custom roms based on official firmware out there, it makes sense to install them over CM7/MIUI.

I've been around these forums for a good while now, having used older HTC devices in the past and more recently under my current moniker on Android devices. Having previously owned G1, G2 and Desire from HTC I'll be receiving a Samsung GSII tomorrow, having chosen it over the HTC Sensation.
Moving to a new device is always fun and enjoyable, but may be even more so moving to an entirely new manufacturer. I was just looking for any pointers and tips from the community on the best ROM's around for the GSII (seeing as there is currently no thread dedicated to listing them) and tips for use on stock firmware, while I do my reading. I've already read through the QA and had a browse through the dev forums (damn it seems like an entirely different site to the XDA I'm used to).
I've used Cyangogenmod for some time now, having run JesusFreke roms initially on my G1 in the early days, used many different variants of android, though liking a stock feel more than any skinned ROM. I've used and liked Oxygen, Villain Rom and even LeeDroid (on a Sense skinned ROM).
Any tips thoughts and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

@OP- Welcome to GSII forum.
Well I can't advice you any Custom ROM's like CM or else as I have no inetrest in them, but if you want advice on Stock then you can use Chainfire Root. It is the simplest rooting process and keeping the kernel close to Stock. You could also try Ninphetamine kernel if you want BLN and Voltage tweaks. For all these just visit the Original Development section.
I would not advice you to use SetCPU and do some Undervolting tweaks as I am yet to confirm their effectiveness. But it's completely up to you.
Also for simple mods and tweaks just read the Q&A thoroughly, a lot of simple yet needed stuffs already discussed there.
Regards.

Yeah I've read over the Q&A and some nice basic tricks there. Thanks for the advice on a start, with stock ROM's, really want root from day one to be able to do what I'm used on my device but just get used to using the Samsung interface, haing never experienced it before. Only ever used SetCPU in the early days on my G1/G2 when it was needed to run some of the later android versions. I really don't see the necessity of overclocking/underclocking a fast dual core CPU and with the advancements made in the android governor as it is.

It's ASOP look, and samsung app free except where it count : browser, camera, video.
The 0.3 is good to test, lasted 0.5 got some issue.
