In ec05 that you can change the call log and choose what to show by pressing menu
The didn't have this option in eb13 and I only noticed it cuz I sent a text and went to call my friend and didn't see a red arrow.
This means samsung actually listens to feedback...
If ed12 is really gb, then it shows they're really changing compared to last year

i thought this has always been an option
I can change what I want to show on EB13, but I can only pick specific filters: 'Missed calls', 'Dialed calls', 'Received calls', 'Sent messages', or 'Received messages'. No way to pick just phone calls with messages... Is this different from the ED12 menu options?
Its been there since DK28.
Do you BONSAI?
yeah it was a useless filter in DK28 and is a useless filter now. they listened to nothing

So on every android phone, in the sound settings for ringtone, you can set it so that your notification and ringtone volume is the same (by checking off a little box). I font see this option on the phone and so when I lower my volume it only lowers it for the ringtone, not emails and texts etc. this is ANNOYING. is they're not a setting for this or is it just me?

It's extremely annoying, and my biggest issue I've had with the phone so far. Followed closely by no notification LED. Hoping to see fixes for both soon.
Okay, here's how.
As usual, Settings > Sound and Display > Notification Ringtone. Now that you have the notification ringtone list open, just press the volume key to adjust.
That's how you manually adjust the notification ringtone, as always. What we're missing is the option always in every other Android OS that allows you to match your notification volume automatically to your ringtone volume, allowing you to adjust everything at once by the hard keys on the outside of the phone. Without that option you bump your ringtone way down, for example to go in a meeting, then one of your notifications goes off full blast.
Okay, I see now. I haven't had an android phone in a month so I'm a bit rusty. Well here's a fix to that then. I can't do anything about it in the settings itself, but go to the market and download "Quick Settings." Open the app and go into volume control. On the top there is a check box for "Use Ringer volume for Notifications." Now it'll work.
That sucks big ones. I'll have to use audio manager till that issue gets fixed. This is why I hate non-stock android phones because manufacturers like htc, motorola, and samsung think they thought of everything but they always end up messing something up

I agree, this is the most annoying thing about the vibrant. (luckily its an easy fix)
Thanks for the suggestion on the "Quick Settings" app
damn, whats up with samsung phones just straight up missing **** that's included in android? I was googling for a way to block calls when I saw that android should be able to take any contact and send their calls straight to voicemail.. NOPE, not on my epic.. now the notification/ringer volume link is missing too?! WTF?
I'm having a serious case of buyer's remorse right now.
Whenever I get multiple messages from multiple recipients, I click on the icon in the Notification bar. This brings me to the latest message I received. If I have a message from another recipient and I use the back button, it goes to the previous app or home screen I was on, then I have to click on the messaging icon again to go to the main messaging screen. Is there a shortcut to go back to the main messaging list? Beginning to be a pita.
That is the way it is supposed to be, using the notification is a shortcut to the message and upon completion of reading and or replying pressing the back button takes you to where you originally where. To have it take you to your inbox would be annoying as you would have to go all the way back to where you were. If you want to quickly move between apps just hold the home button, your recent apps list should come up.

Yes, I agree, that would be annoying if the back button did that. What doesn't make sense is a way to go to the main screen of messaging at all. No option in when pressing the menu button or no way to swipe back to the main menu. Swiping the message will go to the next message from that recipient. What would make sense is swiping the recipient name at the top would go back to the main page. Very annoying when you have multiple new messages.
Cm6 on g1 had the option to make the back button take you back to all threads. I'm hoping for the same once we get cm6 on this beast.

I discovered a partial wakelock bug in Handcent recently. It it not isolated to the Epic as when I went to the Handcent forum to repot it, an EVO user had already posted one, but I figured I would post the same info here that was posted on the official Handcent bug report as a fyi.
"Issue: When popup setting is enabled, phone enters partial wake lock any time a message is received. The wakelock is released after the message has been retrieved/looked at. So if a text comes in at 2am, wakelock is present until 7am when the phone is looked at again.
Screen on for popup :disabled
dim popup screen : disabled
Show when locked : disabled
In fact, every setting under popup settings contains no checkmark.
If there is a debugging mode in this software, please provide instructions how to enable. This may help in troubleshooting
Spareparts indicates partial wakelock for handcent. The longer the interval between receiving a text and actually looking at it, the longer the wakelock period. Battery drain is higher."
Handcent released an update today, but it does not address this issue. So if you are having battery drain issues and you use Handcent, this could be why. If your in the habit of checking your texts as soon as you get them, this might not affect you all that much.
I have switched to Go SMS for now as it is extremely similar to Handcent and does not exhibit this bug.
Also, forgot to add that the bug does not discriminate between Eclair or Froyo.
Right on, thanks for posting. This is really good to know. So, if i understand correctly, does hitting the 'x' and closing out the popup stop the partial wake? I.e. the partial wake is directly correlated to the popup? only?
If not for the transparent themed Handcent im using, id totally switch to Go sms as well..

That's correct it's connected to the pop up only. If you don't use the popup you don't have to worry about it.

I think the only time I wouldn't check a message for a lengthy time is while sleeping, and my phone is plugged in while I'm sleeping. I'd definitely like it to be fixed if it does this, but I doubt it is going to bother many people.
I made the switch to Go SMS and have been using juice defender and my battery life is crazy good compared to my Evo. Go sms is constantly updating and the dev is good about implementing user suggestions, so it should catch up with handcent soon.

I tend to be a little anal when it comes to these things, and the fact that I'm constantly beta testing stuff on my phones means I monitor this stuff pretty closely. Based on my experience, unless you have an app that is misbehaving, Android System will be the biggest user of partial wake time. It's usually around 1 minute per hour of system uptime on average. However, even if you only wait 30 seconds to a couple minutes to check SMS messages when you get them(with Handcent popups on), that partial wake time adds up pretty quick, which can more than triple your overall wake time causing a significant battery hit.
Update: Latest version of Handcent still has not addressed this issue.
Still exists in the most recent version.
The issue is not only limited to the popups part of the notifications. If led blinking is enabled, partial wake results as well.
i also have this problem on my nexus one! =/ really liked handcent, but i will try Go Sms now.
The problem still exists even with handcent version 3.9.7.
GoSMS does not drain the battery but the notification popup is not as good as handcents popup.
Hope this will be fixed soon.
Does this problem happen only with popup enabled?

Yes, the pop-up causes a wakelock.
Recently, a user in the Handcent forums claims that the bug does not occur in AOSP ROMs.
That's good, I've never used the popup feature anyway, its annoying to me.
Any progress on this? Because the bug is still here
This has to be my wake lock issue. I have all pop up crap off but no matter what I do I always get wake lock. Gonna try go SMS.
Sent from my Samsung Epic 4G.
I highly recommend Go SMS. If you don't like the popup for Go SMS make a recommendation to the dev. The dev(s) for Go are VERY open to feedback and recommendations and they implement upgrades quickly.
I'm using Handcent 3.9.8.5 and I don't seem to have any of these issues. I have all the popups turned off as well, and do not experience any wakelock with this app.
Definitely a battery drain
I've been able to replicate this, and it's related to the pop up notification. What's interesting is that my Droid 2 Global (Gingerbread) notifies me, if I don't close the popup, that the Handcent SMS Japanese Font Pack has been running for XX minutes, would you like to close it?
It may be related to the popup and a font pack? At any rate, my phone is blisteringly hot, and the battery goes south very quickly if I leave the popup on. If I catch the SMS very quickly and close the popup/respond, I don't get the issue.
I love Handcent, but this is a big issue for me, since I don't always get to or notice my texts right away, and I can't have it draining my battery down to nothing if I'm in a meeting and can't check my phone. Hopefully they'll fix this.
My question isn't related to any issues you guys are having, just curious on the possibilities of the following.
Is it possible to only have the popup and not the notification come up on the notification bar?
I find it pointless to have my notification sound go off twice for each individual message, when I only want the popups, and not a notification on the notification bar.

Disable (uncheck) autoretrieve and notifications in the "standard" messaging app.
I truly love my S4 but this is driving me insane.
When receiving a message instead of telling me who it's from and an idea of what the message is... I get this:
Edit: Apparently I can't post an image of the issue until after 10 posts. In any case, my notification, both on the lock screen and on the notification bar, say Messaging, and underneath says New Message. Normally, or at least with my S3, it would show who the text message is from, and then a small preview of what the message says.
Has anyone else had this issue or know of a fix? I am trying to stay away from rooting my phone, for now. I am using Nova Launcher Prime but I don't see why this would effect anything. A reboot has done nothing so far.
In message app enter menu and after, settings thhan tick the last option before signature, in italian "anteprima messaggio"

Thanks. For some reason I didn't think to go into the settings of the actual messaging screen. I was able to put a check mark beside "Preview Message" and that has solved my issue. Thanks Again!

I guess Samsung left it off to keep the privacy of unexperienced users on Android that have no idea how to change settings by themselves.

I'm almost definitely sure mine was on by default as I turned it off. It showed the message on the lock screen too.
I'm getting daily spam messages.
Please see the icon in the upper tray to the left.
The Header says:
'New Incoming Message'
I'm not using the Samsung messaging app as default.
I'm not seeing this message in Go SMS or the Samsung messaging app.
When I pull down the drop down, I see the message from a web address, and when I press it, it takes me to the website.
What is that icon to the left and what app is this, and how do I block these morons from sending me their spam?
looks like the O for opera.. Is that installed?
Hi. Yes, I am using Opera as my browser.
It could be that.. id uninstall and see if that stops it..

I think it's related to Samsung somehow, as the symbol is within a grey circle in the drop down screen, similar to other Samsung apps.
Edit:
See attached photo........
Edit #2:
If it does have anything to do with Opera, I just went into Settings/Notifications and changed the setting to 'Denied.'
Ultimately, I'd like to block the morons, if possible.
Pull down the notification shade, long press on that notification, and that should end this mystery.

Thanks for that. I haven't received anymore spam since denying notifications, but if I do, I'll be sure to hard press it.
