Messaging app, shortcut to main page? - Vibrant General

Whenever I get multiple messages from multiple recipients, I click on the icon in the Notification bar. This brings me to the latest message I received. If I have a message from another recipient and I use the back button, it goes to the previous app or home screen I was on, then I have to click on the messaging icon again to go to the main messaging screen. Is there a shortcut to go back to the main messaging list? Beginning to be a pita.

That is the way it is supposed to be, using the notification is a shortcut to the message and upon completion of reading and or replying pressing the back button takes you to where you originally where. To have it take you to your inbox would be annoying as you would have to go all the way back to where you were. If you want to quickly move between apps just hold the home button, your recent apps list should come up.

Yes, I agree, that would be annoying if the back button did that. What doesn't make sense is a way to go to the main screen of messaging at all. No option in when pressing the menu button or no way to swipe back to the main menu. Swiping the message will go to the next message from that recipient. What would make sense is swiping the recipient name at the top would go back to the main page. Very annoying when you have multiple new messages.

Cm6 on g1 had the option to make the back button take you back to all threads. I'm hoping for the same once we get cm6 on this beast.

[Q] Text Message Notification

Has anyone else been having problems with their text message notifications. Frequently when I click on the notification in the pull down, it will either not open the messaging app and clear the notification, open the messaging app to the thread but start at the top, or clear the notification and leave the notification pull down still down?

I've had this problem from time to time on my Heroc, 2.2+ roms, and its present on the Shift as well. Though its not very often, and not limited to one rom.
Leads me to believe its Android-related, and not rom-related.

I'm running the stock build, just rooted. When I contacted HTC all they could suggest was a soft reset, and clearing of all of the messaging data.
Yeah its a problem with android because my girl has a shift that has never been rooted and it does the same thing

I did find out from another thread on here somewhere that the problem with it starting you at the top of the messages is actually because you slide the keyboard open when it is opening the thread.
^^This. If you open a thread in portrait and slide the keyboard while it is still opening the thread, it will start at the top.

Sounds like your home screen is already full. Try moving some of the apps from your main home screen ( the middle one) and place them elsewhere. If the middle one is filled up, it will usually just take you to the home screen and not carry the shortcut for the app forward.
Else, try moving to an empty home screen(any except the middle one) and push and hold down on an empty space. Then, you will see an option saying "Shortcut" or something. Click on it, choose "application" and then select the app you want on that specific home screen and it will just carry it to that empty space you selected earlier.

If you have a home replacement app installed(launcherpro, adwlauncher, etc.) uninstall it and then try. Had the same problem, uninstalling the replacement launcher fixed it. Blur is garbage.
i just had pretty much the same issue. i just installed Go Launcher and the only way to add things onto the home screen is to hold down on the home screen you want to add to, then press add application and then there's a check list for the apps you want to add to that screen.
i know it's off topic, but blur does suck, i was okay with it until i tried other home replacement apps, went back to blur and it physically hurt.
Thanx guys but im perfectly aware of how to add stuff to the home screen and
When its full or not. As for launchers I have 5 different launchers installed including stock MOTOBLUR and I use home switcher for froyo. So for the time being ill just work with a lil' ADW here and a lil' launcherpro. Thanx anyway guys

Go into your apps, hit the menu button, choose edit, find what other three apps you want and drag. Them into the bottom bar, hit menu and selete save.
And next time questions go in q&a.
Go into the app drawer, click menu, edit. Move whichever apps you want into the dock.

Proper way to close an application?

Is it the back button all the way out of the application or pressing the Home button? I can't seem to find a concrete answer!

Those do the same thing, which is either leave the app running or leave it in a nearly running state. To actually close an app, you press the multitasking button (the button to the right of home) and swipe the app off the screen.
BUT, you generally don't need to do that in Android -- The OS manages most well behaving apps fine.

Swiping an app out of recents does the same thing as pressing the back button actually. To answer the first question, the back button exits an app properly, the home button just suspends the app

The back button actually does a better job closing the app, and usually the app has a close button when after jamming the back button. This is how you close (not force close/stop) the app.
If you are using an app and tap the home button, do other stuff and go back, you will be exactly where you were before. This is how you multitask (with the home button).
The multitask menu is like the one on iOS 4 and above. It is a menu of RECENTLY USED APPLICATIONS and is there just for quick switching. Swiping will not close the app, it will delete it off your "history."

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Activity.html#ActivityLifecycle
Swiping gets you to the "activity shut down" phase (onStop and onDestroy are called, assuming your app is nice, it'll shut down).
Home-ing gets you to the onPause phase (from the things I tested, they usually then go to onStop (cached phase)).
Backing out gets you to the onStop (cached) phase.
(You can verify this by looking at Settings>Apps>Running. When I back or home out of an app, the app is shown with the same state (cached). When I swipe an app away, it's gone from both of those task lists.)

Although that is native Android behavior, developers almost always make it so the app will nicely shut itself off when pushing the back button.
For example, when I open Root Explorer, it starts of with a black screen, and only after Root Access is granted my files show up. If I tap back and open it again, bam! Same process.
If I tap home after opening and open it again, bam! Takes me right to the / file directory, no inital "startup" of app

Why can't developers just put an exit button in the app menu?

Generally speaking, there isn't a need for it -- The OS closes and restarts apps as needed to manage resources optimally. Additionally, as gagdude said, most apps save and restore their state beyond the OS cached state, so it isn't always obvious that an app was ever "gone".

[Q] KitKat and SMS

Since KitKat is going to be using Hangouts, how would I be able to get my messages backed up and put back on? Also, is there a way to remove the Google Now page in the launcher? (When switching to the left page of the homescreen there's a Google now page AFAIK.) Thanks
Not sure about the while backing up thing. But to turn off the Google Now page, long press on the home screen, click on settings and at the top there's a toggle to turn Google Now on and off.

I think messages gets backed up to hangouts.
You can remove Google page from the home screen by disabling Google now. Just search anything in Google now, once you get the results; on the bottom right click on the 3 dotted button to go to settings. From there just disable it.
In the future as 4.4 starts rolling out to more devices, I'm sure apps like 'SMS Backup & Restore' will work on a way to back up your text messages again.
Thanks guys!
