Google Talk video chat - Galaxy S II General

Google just announced officially that the Nexus S will get video and voice chat via Google Talk in an upcoming OTA. They also said that it will be rolling out to 2.3+ devices in the future. I can only assume (hope!) the SGSII will be getting it too soon. Like when they've updated other system apps in the past, hopefully this will be a market download and not need a system update.

yeah i really hope that samsung updates GS2 to 2.3.4

Screw Skype, that company has been going down the tubes ever since eBay bought them. Now, once Google Talk has video chat that would be a really good reason to use it. Especially since nearly everyone who uses an Android phone already has an account, and it is supposed to be compatible with doing video chats with Gmail on the desktop too.

I don't even install Skype, but I use Google Talk on a day by day basis. Same for most of my friends.

Yup, google talk is the way to go. I never use skype on desktop unless I have to. Such awful software.

Actual news via twitter:-
@googlenexus: Android 2.3.4 OTA rolling out over the next few weeks! Has bug fixes for Nexus One, video chat for Nexus S. But a surprise is still to come!"
I wished if SGS 2 was a Google Nexus device like the N1 & Nexus S but then sooner or later it will also get the required update either through custom roms or official updates

I think it will be an application update. After they test it with the available 2.3.x models then they will make it public I guess.
2.3.4 brings Nexus S some bug fixes and this update as an addition. But this update does not require 2.3.4. Any gingerbread version will do.

Will Samsung have advantage over other makers (htc aside) due to making the nexus s for google???

I never used it much but a few weeks ago I bought a VOIP adapter from a company called Obihai (Obitalk) and it can be set up with your GV number and has a phone and line port to link in to your home phone for free inbound & outbound calls (well for US & Canada for me). It costs around $50 for the adapter.
It also comes with an Android app to make VOIP calls from your cell phone. It helped me out a month ago when I reached my voice minute limits on my cell provider.
So now I am going to port my cell number to google. I went from never using GV to making it my main phone service "provider".
Voice calling would be great. I loved it on my Evo when it was available through Fring. Unfortunately it only lasted a few weeks until Skype stopped them from using with Skype users.

Tango Video Chat App is now live

Tango has released their video chat for iOS and Android, you can find it in marketplace or at Tango.me
Might not show up in the Apple market just yet, they're a little slow.
I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising.
So does this mean we can video chat with iPhone users as well?
Fring already lets you talk with iOS devices.
What does this do differently?
Thanks for the info, will check it out.

Just got done installing on the old lady and my evos. Video quality is much better than Qik or Fring.
Wow, that's what I have to say about the App. Its awesome, no push to talk button like qik. Way better picture quality, and its full screen. Also has a small button on the top right of the screen so you can switch cameras. I love this App, let's Tango everyone.

So she said i think i cant get a upgrade the the Iphone 4, so we log into he account(which takes about 3 min) her bill was 100 bucks and she had a 39.99 plan(i about pooped myself) but with all the additions(text, web, etc.) it brings her monthly bill up that high.

What's the percentage of people with phones that have front facing cam? Now what's the percentage of people with a desktop/laptop that has a web cam? There's your answer.
I'm hearing rumblings that Skype for mobile is STILL exclusive to Verizon. They get 3G/WiFi Skype, the rest of us get WiFi.
Yeah its useless thats the point of Skype video chat
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
if you can put up with the low quality Qik has a desktop client now, Mochiva is also pretty low quality but they have a desktop client, it really is a pain to not have skype going, they announced some new feature that allows a HUGE amount of multicam chat, i forget the number i think they claim 30? anyways its crazy, i know a few programs have multiple cam chat but ive always stuck with skype
Maybe I am missing something?
For those saying Skype only works over WiFi, am I missing something? This is a direct quote from the Skype App "Free* Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G or WiFi"
I haven't tried making a call yet on 3G so are you saying that its not supported on the EVO over 3G? It does say its not supported on the Samsung Galaxy S, but no where says anything about EVO.

to be a sign that Android 2.3 is almost there, Facebook for Android and Twitter apps should have been released for Android 2.3, not just an update for Android 2.2, I guess
Considering the twitter app was developed inhouse at google, I'm going to say yup.
The only reason I can see them creating new Facebook and Twitter apps *FOR* 2.3, would be because they had new features that would only work on 2.3.
Since they've already released it for 2.2, that means no new features, so what would be the connection between the apps and 2.3?

It's a possibility the design cues will be similar.
We've seen the "thin line" and flatter buttons look on voice search already.
Gmail has those same dividers. The flat palette is also there (when you delete an email you get a green dropdown with white text).
The assets recently dug up inside of the latest Gmaps apk shows the squarer look.
Google has been minimizing resource dependency on all fronts. Removing gradients from images will have a great impact on image assets being pushed over networks (this has more to do with web apps than android apps, but I digress). They have a certain "look" that you can pick up from in all of their products, and it's making it's way into android.
What I meant by early look, is that the team putting the twitter app together has alreayd been working with gingerbread, and possibly honeycomb already.
Personally, I think all the nexus 2 talk has pushed gingerbread to a second thought in the nexus forums. As for gingerbread itself... it will get here when it gets here.
OMFG. I just realized the 2 and 3 buttons are next to each other on my laptop. That must mean 2.3 is coming soon!

The Netflix service itself has not yet been activated for mobile devices due to a DRM issue and that is why the leaked apk can only assess the system. I know that the link as already been provided to my previous thread, but feel free to post any questions there and I'll try to update everyone.

This kind of stuff pisses me off. It is one of the main reasons that I will not get an iPhone. I have a 2nd gen ipod touch, but my wife got that as a gift and I haven't picked it up since I got my Dinc. Especially now that I'm running Protekk's CM7 Rom
I just hate when big companies corner consumers to force people to buy their products and not someone else's. Too much of that going on these days, especially in the mobile and PC markets.

Actually the issue at hand has more to do with the production companies who would love any reason to back out of their contracts with Netflix and sue them. Essentially they won't let Netflix release anything if it even has a chance of being pirated and given Android's open source nature they need hardware DRM since they can't bake in the software DRM as in iOS and WP7.
Hope that provided some clarity.
i would think there would be someway hide the fact that you are accessing it with an android phone, make it think you are on a laptop or something using silverlight. i really have no idea how this works, or what it is that tells them you are on a android device, but with all the different types of emulators seems like someone could emulate that.
I would love to blame Apple as it is so much fun, but unfortunately this is a DRM (digital rights management) issue. There is a feeling that Android devices are too open source. (laughable since the pc is the #1 route for violating that with access to torrents and p2p). The windows based phones also have netflix. Netflix itself would love to get their app on Android phones as it can only increase business, but they must get past the issue of DRM. I'm waiting patiently as well.
How ironic is it that there was an ad for Netflix in my view of this thread
Anyways, we will get Netflix. I think the demand is too high for them to ignore.

Netflix for Android has been released!

Hello Xoomers! Netflix for android has been released today..unfortunately no 3.0 or 3.1 support but its coming soon! Streaming quality is great, plus you can advance on the app with minimal delay...enjoy!!
"But for now, at least, the app will only be available on select Android phones. Those include the HTC Incredible with Android 2.2, HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2 and 2.3, the HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2, the HTC G2 with Android 2.2 and the Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3."

What really gets me about the delay in getting it out to Android devices was Netflix' constant mantra about how they "needed a reliable DRM solution for Android'. Well I just downloaded it onto my EVO, which hasn't had an update since what- October?
IOW there's no new DRM code in the Froyo OS (unlike the Honeycomb 3.1 update, which has it), which means it comes via the app- and since we know the iPad has Netflix, there's no reason left why there can't be one for HC.
Like you said- come on, Netflix! What gives?!

I could put more weight behind this were it not for the fact that I've been able to watch Amazon Instant Movies since the day a Xoom-capable Flash was released.
Besides, Amazon's "all-you-can eat" pricing model for older releases isn't the same as Google's "new(er)-release, rent now" model.
I imagine it wouldn't be a bad idea for someone to post a link to the uploaded apk somewhere so that lazy people like me can sideload as soon as they get this news.
Maybe even edit the OP
