Hello Xoomers! Netflix for android has been released today..unfortunately no 3.0 or 3.1 support but its coming soon! Streaming quality is great, plus you can advance on the app with minimal delay...enjoy!!
"But for now, at least, the app will only be available on select Android phones. Those include the HTC Incredible with Android 2.2, HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2 and 2.3, the HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2, the HTC G2 with Android 2.2 and the Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3."
guess my evo with 2.3 is no good..... someone with one of the said 2.3 devices have the apk they would like to share?
Install it from your PC on your 2.3 evo, thats what i did with my CM7 onboard
the day just keeps getting better. its like christmas.

Love it...
works fine on my evo with miui.
i dunno why i'm even in the xoom forum any more... i think i regret returning it.
I got excited, but you should update the title to say "not for xoom--yet" since this is a xoom forum.
yes but the point is that they have finally shown Android some love...this will look great and the Xoom when the update is released.
I can't find it on my market, or the internet market.
I side-loaded the app and tried it on the Xoom, received an error message, come on Netflix...Tablet support is a must..I a drooling just thinking about using Netflix on the bus with our 10 inch screens!!
Works fine on my CM7 Evo, I had to download it from the Evo forum though since it didn't show up on the market.
I can confirm it doesn't work on Xoom. I sideloaded it, and it pops up a message This device is not supported. It lets me log in and then I try to play something again another message this device is not supported. :-(

What really gets me about the delay in getting it out to Android devices was Netflix' constant mantra about how they "needed a reliable DRM solution for Android'. Well I just downloaded it onto my EVO, which hasn't had an update since what- October?
IOW there's no new DRM code in the Froyo OS (unlike the Honeycomb 3.1 update, which has it), which means it comes via the app- and since we know the iPad has Netflix, there's no reason left why there can't be one for HC.
Like you said- come on, Netflix! What gives?!

I think it has alot to do with the movies google just released. Probably wanna give that awhile before allowing netflix in. Smart business is all.

I could put more weight behind this were it not for the fact that I've been able to watch Amazon Instant Movies since the day a Xoom-capable Flash was released.
Besides, Amazon's "all-you-can eat" pricing model for older releases isn't the same as Google's "new(er)-release, rent now" model.
I imagine it wouldn't be a bad idea for someone to post a link to the uploaded apk somewhere so that lazy people like me can sideload as soon as they get this news.
Maybe even edit the OP

Just came across this, saying that the Hero wont support Flash 10.What do you think about that?
WHAT?
Well, that sucks ass >.> What are we suppose to do? Maybe one of our awesome devs can work on it when the issue comes up. *waits for toast to read this* LOL
no biggie, by the time it comes out, I will be able to upgrade and hopefully will get the rumored supersonic!!
Just because they say the hero won't be supported doesn't mean we won't have it.. lol
Oh I know we'll have it.
Just curious on peoples thoughts as to whether it'll be able to run.Guess we'll just have to wait and see till one of these brainiacs get ahold of it and see what they can do.

i like that adobe already knows its going to cause battery issues lol
I thought the battery drain was negligible. I read an article yesterday on engadget saying that they streamed about 3 hours of video on a nexus one. The article made it sound like it wasn't a battery hog.

I can honestly say that I couldnt care less. I dont play flash games. Youtube has its own app (though it currently doesnt work in the 1.5 OS), and HULU blocks mobile connections. So....what is left to use flash for....the thousands upon thousands of ads dancing across nearly every web page and bragging rights against Apples Iphone. No thanks Adobe, I can live without your crap software.

Just read Palm is updating the Pre WebOS today via OTA. Among the changes is support for Flash 10. Doesn't say it'll work on the Pre, just supported.

It says Flash 10 will be available in the app store soon.
The Pre has much more robust hardware than the Hero.
Flash 10 would be rather useful in some cases, i know personally i would like to listen HoNcast videos while im at work without loading down my network at work. Boss doesn't like that...by the time we get flash 10...flash 11 or 12 might be out and id still be boned...but i can always hope for the best ha ha
we should
port android to the damn pre so we could have basically a droid... except my hero gets a much better signal compared to the damn pre....
I think it sucks. A lot of false promises with this phone. I feel like a beta tester
If anything my thought is that Sprint should allow another upgrade for Hero users. This phone has never worked at 100% since I got it. It's issue after issue.
I have to agree that, while I love this phone, it was definetely produced in a very incomplete state. It's really BS that HTC made the Nexus One not three months later and it has twice the hardware, plus a flash for the camera. WTF?
The hero has to have flash, it was the first phone with flash lite! Also, I'm sure that a developer will get it *looks at toast* if it 'isn't supported' and show them .
Everybody who can't manage to root 2.2.1 might want to hold off. Android Police is a website I like and I cant see them making a post like this not trusting the source. Unless this is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795483&page=2 Banoffee, I am pretty excited!.
I sure hope this is true. I was already afraid that it would get postponed cause there has been no news since august about Gingerbread. And quite a time before Froyo got released we were already eating it for weeks
Next week? I don't think so.. but we'll see :/
That sounds about right actually, with google tv about to spread out like a red light district whore, they'll have to start getting smartphone remotes up and running.

no. the sdk is released ahead always. what good is an OS update if most of the apps won't even run on it? it is giving the app devs a head start. the source is usually released a couple weeks after the official build is released as in OTA

... you mean what if google black helicopters swoop in and rumble your phone for every last scrap of information about you, whoall you know, all your voice calls and messages, and your whereabouts every minute of the day?
I think it may be possible that it will be released next week.
All rumours have stated that Gingerbread will be ready/released in October. Paul O'Brien of MoDaCo posted on his Twitter, a week or so back, that there were gonna be big weeks ahead for Android and Windows Phone 7. Windows Phone 7 has officially launched so that is done, so just the big Android stuff is left which could be Gingerbread.
Also I think Gingerbread will actually be Android 2.3 and that Honeycomb will be Android 3.0. Andy Rubin mentioned 2.3 and 3.0 in a recent interview so as Gingerbread is coming out next, it must be 2.3!
All just speculation though! We'll find out next week!
EDIT: Just seen this article which states that video calling may be in Gingerbread and that several sources have said Gingerbread is going to “change the way we use our phones.”

The Netflix service itself has not yet been activated for mobile devices due to a DRM issue and that is why the leaked apk can only assess the system. I know that the link as already been provided to my previous thread, but feel free to post any questions there and I'll try to update everyone.
Hope that helps.

This kind of stuff pisses me off. It is one of the main reasons that I will not get an iPhone. I have a 2nd gen ipod touch, but my wife got that as a gift and I haven't picked it up since I got my Dinc. Especially now that I'm running Protekk's CM7 Rom
I just hate when big companies corner consumers to force people to buy their products and not someone else's. Too much of that going on these days, especially in the mobile and PC markets.

Actually the issue at hand has more to do with the production companies who would love any reason to back out of their contracts with Netflix and sue them. Essentially they won't let Netflix release anything if it even has a chance of being pirated and given Android's open source nature they need hardware DRM since they can't bake in the software DRM as in iOS and WP7.
Hope that provided some clarity.
i would think there would be someway hide the fact that you are accessing it with an android phone, make it think you are on a laptop or something using silverlight. i really have no idea how this works, or what it is that tells them you are on a android device, but with all the different types of emulators seems like someone could emulate that.
I would love to blame Apple as it is so much fun, but unfortunately this is a DRM (digital rights management) issue. There is a feeling that Android devices are too open source. (laughable since the pc is the #1 route for violating that with access to torrents and p2p). The windows based phones also have netflix. Netflix itself would love to get their app on Android phones as it can only increase business, but they must get past the issue of DRM. I'm waiting patiently as well.
How ironic is it that there was an ad for Netflix in my view of this thread
Anyways, we will get Netflix. I think the demand is too high for them to ignore.

Yes, I also own a Xoom running 3.2 and you can sideload the Netflix app on it and it works fine. I am waiting for it to show up in the Market though so I can get the automatic Netflix updates as opposed to the sideloaded version that you must manually update. Hopefully, the TF will get this working in 3.2... Keeping my fingers crossed...

That requires root and the installation of a patch. I have no time for such things (including messing around with unrooting when then next TF update comes), and so having an official Netflix app will be most welcome.
http://eee.asus.com/en/eeepad/transformer/specification
Theyre claiming Netflix(us only) on their site, so possibly after 3.2
Keeping my fingers crossed. I've held out on rooting this far. Love my transformer and honestly can live without netflix on it, but it would surely be a plus to have it added.

For me it adds an extra component to the transformer that other tablets already have. At this point android is playing catchup to Ipad. (well..everyone is)
They all are, but android has a good chance to get there, but they need to add what competitors offer and then add their own extra spice.
Personally, i have netflix enabled in all my tvs at home, but would love to have it on my TF for road trips. If i stay on a hotel, tether off the phone in the car..it just adds more thrills to an already good device.

It's odd, because it has the same price as the other high end tablet and it was the most popular as i said i considered it a NEXUS tablet, and it will probably not be the second one to receive ICS either, that will be the asus transformer
It's crap because not only wa the xoom branded as a GED ...
... not only did the Android team happily blog that ICS compiles for Xoom right out the gate with no tweaks ...
... not only did team EOS get leaked Chinese drivers to make everything work ...
... Motorola _still_ couldn't be bothered to get the update out in time.
Seriously they lined themselves up to have almost zero work on this port ... and they still blew it.
i also bought the xoom thinking it would be treated differently as it was the first "google tab" i have yet to see any special favoritism towards this device.

test..................
What a shocker Motorola borked an update, I guess they are too busy putting out 3 new phones and tablets every week to be bothered to do updates if google doesn't fix them they are done
I paid more for this thing when other tablets were out just so I didn't have to wait for updates...... Guess I was wrong
For the record the "test" wifi users signed up for last week still has not been released
Or maybe they don't want to look like dicks because Google bought them. Maybe Google want everyone to see that Motorola isn't its bff..... or its just the same old Motorola doing what they do best...nothing. you know what will put a cherry on top? Locking the boot loader.
From the sound of things for the soak test Wifi users were signing up for, Google is in control of the update, which makes sense, since it is a GED after all. It may not be Motorola's choice/decision.
