"Samsung Galaxy S [UPDATED 4/7/11]: All signs point to Gingerbread being in the cards for Samsung's popular Galaxy S line of phones. That includes the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint, Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile, and Samsung Fascinate on Verizon (which as of now has yet to even receive Froyo). Rumors started popping up in January that some Galaxy S phones could see an Android 2.3 upgrade as early as March or April. Samsung's official Samsung Mobile India Twitter account, meanwhile, has stated numerous times that the Galaxy S will receive Gingerbread -- version 2.3.3 -- but that a definite launch date has not been set. Samsung's Romanian Facebook page has issued similar promises. In late March, software said to be a leaked version of Samsung's official Galaxy S Gingerbread update surfaced on an Android developers' forum, heightening speculation that a rollout could be near. In addition to all of that, Samsung's Finnish site has now posted a news release stating that Gingerbread will reach Galaxy S handsets "in mid-April.""
Another good article to read from Lifehackerwith a spreadsheet of release dates.

lol "Troll".
Well, let's see, even if gingerbread were CLOSE to being released, don't think of the Galaxy S as a sign.
First of all, the Galaxy S is Samsung's MAIN FLAGSHIP device, AND Galaxy S's are only released in Europe, I believe.
So therefore, even if Samsung had a finished product of 2.3 for us by mid-april, Sprint's going to have to add their crap to it and **** it up some more, make it even more buggier than Samsung achieved, and send an OTA that will have to be pulled the day after it comes out because it'll fry people's phones. SOOO, if we WERE to get Gingerbread, I'd say by August-Mid September at the earliest.
Sorry for bringing your hopes down...just stating the facts.

It says Galaxy S, I know. But we do not have the Galaxy S i9000, we have a phone in the same "family" as the Galaxy S i9000, but that is the first and main focus of Samsung's Galaxy S family. And I know we will get the update sooner or later, I'm just saying don't give your hopes up for a release this month.
I think Im more excited about cm7 than an official gingerbread from Samsung

Official Gingerbread, would not only speed up CM7 development but allow for OCing kernels for CM.

I support and agree 100% with this message.
I'm just hoping they get 4G figured out. I live around the Chicago area, so to have it and then not...well, that would kind of suck. Not sure I'm willing to give it up, even for the sweetness CM7 is/will be.

Looks like more pundits taking 'twitter' as a valid source... and one for OTHER COUNTRIES that use the i9000.... the SAME as the rumor about froyo from what, samsung Twit UK??? None of the Twits in the article said anything about the US variants, just the writer of the article... typical... tech media reach so far for a story. Besides, I wouldn't even trust a US Twit, look at the SamsungJohn thing... they could just be sharing their feelings like when they talk about how good their sushi was today... social networking crap isnt news, its crap. Facebook is not a government insider... its just a site for douchebaggery.
+1 on CM and MIUI! But GB source for them would be good, no?
I'd expect a GB port from the Nexus S 4G long before we get anything official...

Good to see Motorola has started rolling out their non-Google proprietary ICS builds for the Xoom. Hopefully this means MZ601, MZ605 and MZ606 won't be far behind.
Let the "Why hasn't Verizon approved Google's ROM for rollout to the 3/4G Xoom yet??" begin in 3..2..1..

Has Motorola loaded the Canadian ICS with any 'extra' software?
What version of Android 4 is it using? (4.0.3 or 4.0.4?)
It is 4.0.3 version of ICS
Additions
Equalizer now available in music player..By pressing power and volume down at same time gives you a screenshot of what's on your screen..Panorama now available in camera mode. Nice tweaks....
Trying to download the Canadian Xoom Wifi image from the page at http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/ but the site seems to be down.
Does anyone have the direct link to the image?
Still hasn't pushed out to my Xoom.
Is there a way to force the update?
I just flashed my Australian Xoom with the Canadian images but it only upgraded itself to Honeycomb 3.2.
Flashed back to the US images (4.0.4).
Lucky buggers, I hope the uk version isn't far behind. Still, took them long enough!

I'm very interested to hear if there are any significant differences in the Canadian ICS rom compared to the US one (i.e. SD card access debacle in 3.2 awhile back when Canadians could access it, but the US version couldn't).
Does it fix the keyboard lag present in HC 3.2? I'm in UK so hopefully we'll see this update in the next few weeks.
I'll take that as a no then?
I've read it improves the keyboard lag to a point that its not noticeable. I don't know personally since I'm still waiting

I had mine updated last night...
was great at first, felt snappy!
Then I fell victim to the constant freezing every time it went to sleep. It's pretty much unusable right now for me, unless I keep it awake all the time.
I waited so long (didn't expect it really) for ICS, so I'll wait a bit longer for Motorola to hopefully figure out a fix. Isn't just me, so I'm hoping that happens!
So...today Jelly Bean was accidentally outed on the Google Play Store as Android 4.1. If you added a Galaxy Nexus to your cart, the line item read "Soon to be the first phone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean"
Obviously we are all expecting the new Nexus tablet to be unveiled at Google I/O. With that in mind, adding to it the fact that the VZW Xoom will reach 18 months in August and the WiFi Xoom in October, what say ye? Do we stand a chance of getting Jelly Bean on the Xoom?
I personally say yes since JB is just a point release. I'm sure WiFi will get it first followed by VZW a month or two later. If the Xoom gets JB however, I would be shocked if it received the next major release (5.0).

Unless Google changes something dramatically like they did from Gingerbread/honeycomb to ICS, I would think the community will be able to get it running quite easily. However, I'm doubting anything farther than 4.1 will be official.

I think the chances of officialness is fairly decent, and even still, it'll be open source and the Xoom specs are still decent, it won't be hard to get it running. I even think the the next update could be official. HTC still give official updates the the Desire HD (Inspire 4G I think) and that's over 2 years old but still a decent device

Hopefully this Xoom will be updated to jellybean should be easy since this device is stock ICS.
Motorola hasn't yet updated to ICS and you ask for Jelly Bean?????
EMEA Wifi + 3g Xoom haven't yet got ICS.
They will need at least two years.
What a mistake buying a product from usa manufacturer......never ever again.....
Xoom WIFI hopefully will be updated. It has received updates in a timely matter. If not the community will address the update.
I'm talking about the US version, where the Xoom runs stock ICS and gets updates straight from Google. The international versions have Motorola customizations and obviously, updates come from Motorola rather than Google. You guys are probably screwed.

Yeah, gizmodo reported the same thing: http://gizmodo.com/5921713/android-jelly-beans-new-features
So, one thing that didn't seem clear... the Nexus 7 is obviously designed to be held like a phone (portrait mode)... so the decision to still have it default to a tablet like interface in apps (larger screen) yet still retain the phone like UI layout makes sense... But what about for landscape style 10 inch tablets like the Xoom? Are we going to see the honeycomb like interface disappear and be replaced with the jelly bean launcher at the bottom / notification bar at the top?
That would be a mistake. I use the Xoom with almost entirely widgets. The large screen is conducive to quickly scanning content in widgets. Mail, News Reader, Calender, etc. without even opening the app.
But that new Google+ for tablets is definitely landscape mode.
I think it would be a mistake too... but it seems they are trying to unify the interface between the two even more... I hope not...
on the xoom 2 we still don't have ICS, not to mention android 4.1.

Clearly you don't get it. The original Xoom is a Google Experience Device in the USA. It's like a Nexus tablet without carrying the Nexus name. It runs stock Android and updates come from Google. The Xoom 2 is NOT a Google Experience device, therefore it runs a customized firmware done by Motorola and updated by Motorola.
You're comparing apples to trucks.
The U.S. WiFi-only and Verizon 3/4G Xoom models will get Jelly Bean. As for international Xooms, who knows. The Xoom 2 isn't part of this discussion.
Google is releasing the SDK out to developers today for JellyBean. That is good news for the Dev Community.
I'm nervous about the new graphics and rendering system upgrades.
This may affect our portability with certain closed source drivers.
I'm having second thoughts about this phone. If I want to go through the slow upgrades again. GS2 doesn't have official ICS yet and JB is out.

I think he means for sprint. We still don't have an official update on sprint.
I am nervous and freaking out about JB since we don't have it yet (so what if it hasn't rolled out yet).
Knowing Samsung it will be like 12 years before it ever comes out and worse than that Sprint will still be charging us $10 a month for premium data even after they roll out LTE.

If tmobile does officially release Jellybean don't expect for it to show up soon. it took 7 months!!!! for ICS to be rolled out on the GS2.
And just as soon as I get a phone with ICS, its not obsolete. Awesome... maybe JB will hit the SGS3 by next summer.
Well lets just hope that the Devs will be able to make some magic happen for our devices using the new "Project Butter" they are implementing in JB.
Idk I'm reconsidering maybe returning and waiting for the next nexus. Google will roll out with the update in mid July and the gnex will receive it via OTA. It just sucks how carriers take such a long time to make sure their bloat works. At&t and Tmobile just barely had ICS roll out on GS2 and I don't think sprint has even been upgraded officially yet.

There is no new phone that Google is revealing. Jellybean will only be on the nexus s, galaxy nexus and nexus 7 tablet. I have high hopes that developers will be able to get a working CM version of jellybean on this sgs3
It's almost certain that their will be custom roms of the latest Android OS long before CDMA Nexus' get it. Not to mention the new Nexus will have underwhelming specs. I say hold on to your S3.
Looking forward to a CyanogenMod 9.1 (or would that be 10?)
Considering how new this phone is and the inevitable huge developer support once everyone gets their phones I'm not too worried about not having this for long.
Besides... I am perfectly happy with ICS. I haven't found a need or an issue that would make me irritated by not having something in JB. That's technology and software for you. There is always something right around the corner that is better.
Be happy with what you have, always seeking the newest greatest thing will drive you crazy and/or broke.

While Motorola may have promised Jelly Bean updates for their most recently launched RAZR devices, for other Moto owners life isn't so peachy on the update front. The device software upgrade page has been updated, and it isn't going to make happy reading for some.
The Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 now read as "further plans coming soon," having previously been pegged to update to ICS in Q3. The Xyboard 8.2 and Xoom Family Edition are also in the same boat, only the pair of tablets are still provided with a date sometime in Q4. Also slipping into the Q4 category is the DROID Bionic.
We previously reported that devices such as the DROID 3 would remain on Gingerbread, and one has to only hope that the same isn't about to be said of some of these. The Atrix 2 isn't even a year old, so to see it left languishing in a pre-ICS world would be a sorry sight. Slipping dates leave us feeling less doomsday, yet still with a slightly ominous feeling. If Moto is already talking the Jelly Bean talk, one does have to wonder where some of these ICS updates are hiding.
Of course, there is always the promise of a $100 credit towards a new Motorola phone should your 2011 onwards device not get updated to Jelly Bean. So don't go throwing away that Atrix 2 just yet.
