[Q] A Question about S-ON/S-OFF - Wildfire General

When I start my phone in hboot bootloader screen it is showing S-ON at the top of the screen yet I was able to root it with unrevoked and flash it with custom rom Cyanogenmod 6.1. So what exactly does S-OFF actually allow you to do?

Flash recoveries on the fly, resize internal memory partitions. You need to search.

S-OFF by xtc clip allows u not only to root but also has several advantages.
S-OFF in general by any method has advantages.
check those advantages here in post #3

No, it doesn't. S-off means security is off, and you can flash unsigned (custom) images to the phone.
This is "sort of" a follow up question to the s-off: i have the Droid Incredible and HAD root (on the 2.2 OTA which was a 2.x Build number). They recently pushed a 3.x build which had enhancements to Exchange integration that i wanted, so i applied it. Now, I do NOT have root, but I still see s-off at the bootloader... can anyone shed some light on:
1. the difference between having ROOT and having s-off...
2. How i might regain ROOT on the 3.x build...
i had used unrEVOked3 on the original 2.2 and had no problems... now when running the latest unrEVOked3 my phone hangs (as does the unrEVOked app) at the "attempting to get root" process.... and never gets root.
I am led to believe that Verizon/HTC have patched the vulnerability... thoughts?

With s-off u should be able to use fastboot or rom manager to push a new recovery img. Once you have that, u can flash a rooted rom.
Root is done in the rom. Recovery flashes roms. S-off controls flashing (among other things)

Would it be more accurate to say that S-Off allows flashing?

Not really, because S-ON still allows flashing, just that it only allows flashing of signed ROM. So S-ON/S-OFF determines which sort of ROMs you will be able to flash.
Don't get that part

Does that mean S-OFF is a developer phone? And how about warranty?
Btw, my one is S-ON but i can toggle between Signature check on fastboot.
The only time flashing does not work, even when signature check is disabled, is when the image doesn't match.. can't recall the exact error message. Wonder if that has to do as well with the S-ON/OFF thing?

s-on unroot etc.

I am in need of warranty services so I installed stock vha rom and did a factory reset, etc.
Problem is the phone is still s-on and rooted.
I can remove root in visionary... How do i s-on? I would not like any traces of hacking left over. thanks.
You have to flash a stock RUU

uhm can you explain?
I need that too
thanks in advance
If we hard reset our phone without keeping the backup and untick the option of installing the backup from the options, then i think we loose the root and the S-OFF.
I am interested also too, to remove the s-off
Antonios, no, S-OFF would remain. Also using stock RUU is not enough in most cases, as it would fail at hboot version checking while flashing OR Radio S-OFF would remain in the phone nevertheless. One tried, tested and simple way to S-ON from pretty much any phone state is to:
- Do Radio S-OFF (yes, S-OFF) with my tool if not already (link in sig)
- Follow the instructions in my Radio tool thread to go S-ON
It will remove clockworkmod, eng hboot, custom rom, everything. Your device will be completely stock after the process.
Should be sticky in Desire HD Android Development section. no?

[Q] WildFire S-On

Dear,
Am using Wildfire...I have rooted it and using DK Custom Froyo V4.4
My boot loader shows
BAZZ PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT- 0.80.0007
MI CROP- 0622
.......
My Noob Ques
1. Is the phone fully rooted..??
2. What I not able to do with S-ON and What with S-Off
3. Any screenshot how to S-off the Wildfire??
please reply...
no need to worry
you want S-off (security-off) only if you have hboot 1.0.xx so you can root.
-ur phone is rooted (with custom recovery installed).
-u can access the ROOT ONLY APPS on ur phone.
-u can enjoy custom roms on ur phone
-dont know whether u can use a custom splash image for boot screen.
coming to the s-off point, it is disabling the nand security. U will get access to additional advanced options on doing this,
u can see the advantages of s-off here on post #3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041530
and regarding how to s-off the wildfire, there are 2 options
-xtc clip (which is expensive, ur phone is already rooted and and no one will recommend u to go with this just for making s-off)
-alpharev2 (a freeware software solution for u which is not yet released, wait for its relese)
check for news on alpharev2 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794421 (also ur screenshot there, but its not how to s-off)
http://alpharev.nl/

if u think of s-off for just rooting a present wildfire, that will be correct.
s-off is not only for rooting a wildfire, but also has several advantages like i gave u in the above link.
s-off by alpharev has additional options like "fastboot extended commands will be enabled".
and for hboot 1.01, even if they are rooted (maybe in future) with s-on, they are not compatible with alpharev2.
and for hboot 1.01 users who made s-off by xtc clip, can use alpharev2 in conjunction to make use of the advantages of alpharev2.
thats all dude, someone correct me if im wrong.

You are rooted and can flash whatever you want from what you described. Getting s-off is different. Please click my name and see the links thread I started, it has links to both s-off methods for heroc. It unlocks your bootloader, go read about it. Again, you don't really need it, but it's kinda cool.

Can you help me to fix my htc desire 816 i accident delete the file framework after that its blinking and shutting down when i open again cant open. I try to wipe or format using power botoon and v+ but useless help me please . What is the other way to fix that.

New DZ seems to be unclocked on gingerbread

UPDATE: Topic title should read 'unlocked'.
Had to start another topic for this. Just recently got my DZ but it came with android 2.3.3 so I thought 'bugger' and thought I would need to downgrade. I bought my phone 'factory unlocked' which I assumed just meant network unlocked.
BUT, I've just booted into the bootloader and it says I'm S-OFF. Does this mean it's a real S-OFF or similar to the engineering HBOOT S-OFF?
Would there be any way to root it without downgrading/custom rom do you think?
Anyone more experienced shed some light?
if it says SHIP S-OFF then you should have true s-off.
In which case getting perm root is simple, follow this guide, but only run the 'Gaining Temp Root' and '
Temp-Rooting to Backup' sections.
This should stick with a reboot, so you will have perm-root.

Brilliant! This will definitely work even on the stock rom won't it? I only want root for setcpu for underclocking.
Gonna charge it up and give it a shot. Does my hboot version or anything else matter before I try this?
Just for info it says this in bootloader:
VISION PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.0013
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.10.04.03_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 11 2011,23:36:27
Thanks.
Well I went ahead and tried it and it worked great, I now have root!
I have noticed however that setcpu doesn't appear to allow underclocking with the stock rom. I thought maybe that would be ok. When I move the sliders, nothing changes.
Now that I'm rooted with S-OFF on gingerbread, can I install custom kernels?
If you install rom manager you can install clockworkmod recovery, and install a new rom/kernel through that.

Good stuff, you answered my next question which was how to get clockworkmod on.
Many Thanks.
