New DZ seems to be unclocked on gingerbread - G2 and Desire Z General

UPDATE: Topic title should read 'unlocked'.
Had to start another topic for this. Just recently got my DZ but it came with android 2.3.3 so I thought 'bugger' and thought I would need to downgrade. I bought my phone 'factory unlocked' which I assumed just meant network unlocked.
BUT, I've just booted into the bootloader and it says I'm S-OFF. Does this mean it's a real S-OFF or similar to the engineering HBOOT S-OFF?
Would there be any way to root it without downgrading/custom rom do you think?
Anyone more experienced shed some light?

if it says SHIP S-OFF then you should have true s-off.
In which case getting perm root is simple, follow this guide, but only run the 'Gaining Temp Root' and '
Temp-Rooting to Backup' sections.
This should stick with a reboot, so you will have perm-root.

Brilliant! This will definitely work even on the stock rom won't it? I only want root for setcpu for underclocking.
Gonna charge it up and give it a shot. Does my hboot version or anything else matter before I try this?
Just for info it says this in bootloader:
VISION PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.0013
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.10.04.03_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 11 2011,23:36:27
Thanks.

Well I went ahead and tried it and it worked great, I now have root!
I have noticed however that setcpu doesn't appear to allow underclocking with the stock rom. I thought maybe that would be ok. When I move the sliders, nothing changes.
Now that I'm rooted with S-OFF on gingerbread, can I install custom kernels?

If you install rom manager you can install clockworkmod recovery, and install a new rom/kernel through that.

Good stuff, you answered my next question which was how to get clockworkmod on.
Many Thanks.

Help With Failed Permaroot

Please, flame me not for I have read and read until I can read no more.
I am just confused and what to make sure I am following the right thread.
My Wife used Visionary r14 for some reason to permaroot her phone and it rebooted and is now stuck on the HTC Boot screen.
I go into Hboot and it shows S-on.
I do a factory reset to no avail.
From my understanding, there is still hope. Please what do I need to do to get her phone back working.
And attempting to flash back says that Main is older.
She is still stock with STOCK RECOVERY, everything.

Anyone? Please, some help. I have been glued to this forum all night.
You need to hex edit the pc10img.zip file. And if you had actually read enough, you would know that visionary bricks phones.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
Go to the dev forum. There is a thread there about "how to recover your semi-brick". Follow that and read the steps to get back to stock and flash a stock PC10img.zip
Next time, don't let her run Visionary. Just do rage/gfree method and call it good.

You are rooted and can flash whatever you want from what you described. Getting s-off is different. Please click my name and see the links thread I started, it has links to both s-off methods for heroc. It unlocks your bootloader, go read about it. Again, you don't really need it, but it's kinda cool.

Go to the development section. There's guides to do it with terminal from your phone
Having the newest bootloader, I'm not sure gfree works "as is".
Also, since you have Gingerbread, Visionary won't root you. You should try Gingerbreak.
Will you ever be able to root? Of course. I'm not sure about now.

Follow this process step by step.
There are many other ways to root, but this is the best one in my opinion.

People here seem not to read quite well. So they're probably missing the most important info in your OP:
HBOOT-0.89.0005
In addition to not being the standard bootloader that all the guides are written for, that also brings the assumption that you're running Gingerbread.
Gfree method, as other perm-root methods, were meant to work under temp-root, and on HBOOT 0.86.0000. Yours, on other hand, might not achieve temp-root easily (Visionary+ doesn't work on Gingerbread, you need to try Gingerbreak, as I've suggested), or not at all (if Gingerbreak won't work). And in addition to that, Gfree might not work for your bootloader version (not sure - this one also needs to be checked).
But that doesn't stop people from pointing you to the wrong guides that don't apply to your phone.
Thus, if I were you, I'd develop strong skills for selective reading.

Thank you for the help, I'll try Gingerbreak.

+1, got a kick out of the resonses that overlooked the original concern.
wow, this thread needs to be watched, and hopefully scotty2 or grankin01 or guhle99 can maybe point the folks with this new bootloader to an updated version of gfree or rather, visionary to at least temproot
also, it begs the question- is this a game changer for rooting the mt4g if all new units in june2011 - on will now have the 089 bootloader instead of 086. with grankin gone, and no visionary updates for some time, what's left to use?
lastly, with HTC announcing no locked bootloaders, will that affect new builds of the existing mt4g, where we won't need to root it at all? that it will come with some open way to achieve superuser status that doesn't require vis/gfree....
and even more lastly, I wonder when that will be rolled out-- will some near-future version of this OP's phone with HB089 come unlocked as the HTC press release seemed to indicate?

As I've pointed, GFree needs root privileges to to work, which means - it needs temp-root. For Froyo, temp-root (temporary root privileges that don't stick after reboot) were provided by Visionary/Z4root/SuperOneClick(using rageagainstthecage/psneuter methods), but none of them work for Gingerbread. Gingerbreak sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. If you leave it for 10 min to work and it didn't - then it can't temp-root your device, and you need to wait for another, working temp-root method. Without temp-root, GFree won't work, and you won't be able to achieve r/w access to the system (which allows perm-root).
Just got a replacement phone and I'm in the same boat. Anyone find a solution for the 0.89.0005 version?
Yes if you are on official 2.3.4, you can now get root. Not straight forward though. Search for G2 method
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Try running Gingerbreak or fre3vo for temp-root, and hopefully Gfree will patch the security flag in any case.
Also, you can force downgrade the OS to 2.2.1 - please look for a thread that explains how to do it.

I had to do that and I now have 2.3.4 rooted

so is there any stock or newer than 26.13.04.19_M, so i can flash it to stock, or how to downgrade, if there is no root or temp and it doesn't boot, or i have to use jtag?
thank you very much indeed
No root, doesn't boot to the point where you can connect through ADB and temp-root (or ADB turned off), stock, S-ON and on latest OS build already - I'm afraid you have nothing to do.
hi
thank you very much indeed for your attention
i believe that i can conect it as adb if i put it in hboot, but how to temp root if i read, that the version is not rootable only after downgrade, maybe edit to downgrade?
hopefully, im trying to help a friend with this phone, and i dont want to try jtag only as the last option
ADB only works in the OS. Since you can't boot the OS even to initial stages, ADB won't work.
You can connect fastboot in bootloader, not ADB. But fastboot won't allow you anything before you're S-OFF and have engineering bootloader flashed. There is no operation to S-OFF the phone from bootloader, you need OS for that. And again, you don't have OS - you can't boot.
Which leaves you with nothing to do.
well
so it seems that either or i get the newest ruu or zip, with the same or newer rom, or the real chance, is that i should use jtag to fix it, i have 2 samsung ace, 1 hd2, and maybe after those ill try to solder this one to fix the boot, i was hopping to avoid this but not a chance, i have the tools and some experience, so lets do it
but thank you very much indeed for your time and help
I download a file from another site since I'm having the same exact problem. I was using darkside rom perfectly and i left my phone changing the screen that was broken. Then when i pick up my phone today i saw the same thing that you post. As I said, i download a PD15IMG gingerbread and ask me if i want to update and i say yes....but i dont know how long it will take since im doing that right now....and i think it just froze lol....

I have followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25372466&highlight=s-off+still#post25372466 to the roots of it and i still cant get s-on! Any one willing to help?! after i do the last step it still says s-off but this time with 85.000 hboot! do i have to flash the PD15IMG so i can have s-on after that last step?!
OKAY! i did the type ./gfee --secu_flag on" now if i redo the PD15IMG will i have s-on?!!?!?!
Did you restore the part7backup?

Part7backup doesn't matter much. If gfree was run and pd15img will be flashed after it, S-ON will be restored.

So what's his problem then? I'm not being sarcastic. If he got S-OFF with gfree and used gfree to turn the security flag back on, then...?
With Eng HBOOT the security flag isn't being checked - so he sees S-OFF even though the flag itself might be ON. PD15IMG with stock bootloader will revert his HBOOT to stock, which will reflect the actual flag status.
You guys were great help but I tried everything on what you guys showed me. But nothing seemed to work.. I sent the phone back unrooted but the flag still said s-off even without the eng boatloader... They sent me a replacement mt4g and it had the same issue with the screen being washed off. I talked with them (someone hung up on me twice, pissed me off) and they decoded to send me the sensation 4g. I am now going to be here and there trying to port good roms for you guys to enjoy on the mt4g! By the way, sense 3.6 on HTC isn't that different. Don't get too excited about it folks... Well thanks a lot for you're help ladies and gentlemen! Gcashiel singing off.
Ps. Pm Me if you like any sensation roms for me to port over!
