T mobile G2 Signal issue - G2 and Desire Z General

Okay so I have a G2 running virtuous sense v1.02. Here's my issue. No matter what radio I choose, I have signal issues. Depending on how I hold my phone I either have FULL signal, or no bars with an X over them. Most of the time I can't send texts or make calls. I've missed quite a few calls with this issue to. Shoot I'm willing to open up open phone to mess with the antenna "lf I knew where it was located". I live in an area with GREAT coverage so there's no reason I should be dropping calls. Does anybody know how to fix this serious issue?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Edit: To clarify this isnt about the SIGNAL and getting good reception. I HAVE complete full signal... UNTIL i pick up my phone. Like right now its sitting on my desk and i have all 4 bars... But when i pick it up in my hand it either goes to 1 bar or an X. I need answers reffereing to a case, or cure. Somebody whos had this EXACT issue and has overcame it.

Yes, it is very sensitive.
Try wrapping electric tape around the metal band around the screen.

I am pretty disappointed with the antenna performance of the G2 myself.

Can you go to Settings/About Phone/ Software INformation/ and te;; me what baseband version u have?

try to set the "wcdma only"

Last time i did that, I didnt get any signal at ALL. But ill give it a shot again!

Yep, I tried it and i get no signal! Anybody else have any ideas? Thanks!

Yea me and my brother were having the same issue. I had bad reception where I usto have good reception. We would lose signals during calls 75% of the time...was told it was the kernal then the radio, but it was neither so I gave up and went back to stock rom. I never had this problem before the latest update. Hopefully someone finds the reason for this.

No go! idnt work! I get no signal with wcdma only. Only a x over bars. Anyone else got ideas? I just wanna be able to hold my phone without signal loss.

If this was too me, I don't really hse my phone for calls... maybe an hour a month... so I don't notice dropped calls or service issues. but I don't get service loss when not on the phone...

I know people have said when they hold it a certain way (keyboard open)wifi drops, which I've noticed.. the wifi antennea is about to the right of the camera, so I know why.. some cases have a hole in it to not keep it blocked I believe.. so maybe your holdin right over the antennea...
Sent from my HTC Desire Z/G2 using XDA App

I've noticed that if I hold the phone vertically in my right hand I get much better signal than when I hold it vertically in my left hand. This is especially prevalent in areas with weak signal, like my house. I'm on Wifi most of the time at home so it's not too big a deal. But I've also noticed that when I hold the phone horizontally with the keyboard out the Wifi signal goes down a bit.

I also experienced weak signals while stock and then even worse with CM7 stable loaded. Then a miracle happened when CM7.0.2 update happened. I now get great reception with data and wi-fi. CM7.0.2 rocks the G2!

Thats the thing with smart phones, being on 3G most of time, you don't realize the 3G speeds.
My 3g was solid when i went int town... ****ty at home but thats what wifi is for
personally i think if there is a problem its with tmobile's network... they just rolled out a new system and their service has never been "verizon" as it is... give it time children... i think everyone just likes to throw a fit about everything for the sake of kickin and screaming
haha i just checked the map around my house and there is like speckles of 3g all around my house but not directly over where my house would be... i get 3g in random parts of my house and edge upstairs in my room... pretty funny that the map of their reflects my situation so well
i cannot wait to get back to tempe, the whole phoenix metro area is one big purple blotch on the coverage map lol

How can the same provider (T-mobile) have 3G in the G1 but Edge on the Nexus One?
Its quite possible though that this is a measure implemented by Google to keep the phone in low power EDGE mode when you are not actively using the data connection? That way the phone lasts a lot longer? Just guessing...
I think it's more of a T-Mobile issue than a N1 issue. I originally ordered it with a T-Mobile SIM/plan, but ended up having to use it with AT&T on EDGE since I couldn't get a signal at all indoors and it dropped down to GRPS when I was inside a restaurant in the middle of Downtown LA!

DING DING DING! i read through a good portion of the google thread at the top and then skimmed the rest and thats what i was thinking may be happening... the guy was playing pandora on 3g with no problem, soon as he gets near it to play around it goes to edge? sounds to me like maybe a power saving mechanism... like the cpu it only uses the high end data rates when necessary, crafty if thats actually what its doing and it is working right... I shall run tests tomorrow when i go into town for dinner and such
personally though, the phone has been out on the streets for like 72 hours... bite your tongue for 10 days straight and if **** still doesnt fly by your book you have 4 days left on that RMA date... iphone release days anyone? att/apple about cried...

Probably because the Nexus One can't use AT&T 3G network, just 2G.
I've been paying close attention to reception since I got my NOne yesterday, and so far it seems to change at exactly the same times my G1 would. Upstairs 3g is strong, downstairs it drops to EDGE - just like my G1.
The only difference I notice is the NOne does it much faster.
I have a mytouch, G1 and N1 all on tmob and I have 3G on all three all the time, must be certain areas, or larger markets maybe?

Thats another possibility as well.
If you all remember, the 3GS used to 'reflect' the fact that it had dropped out of 3G a lot earlier than the 'iPhone 3G' and that lead ppl to believe that the 3GS has poor 3G reception.
Maybe it is a similar situation here...

Dear T-Mobile Customer
We have reviewed your recent coverage concern, and you may qualify to be part of a free in-home device trial! The device is designed to boost 3G signal inside your home. We look forward to speaking with you regarding your eligibility...
..contact info, etc..etc...
So I qualified.. The requirements included one bar 3g signal. 3g device, data plan blah... Moderate service, a land line for 911 calls, and single family home.. No apts or highrises I guess..
So I'm in this test group of 1000 lucky tmo customers that get one of these little in home 3g boosters,
Awesome
I'll keep yous guys informed..

I assume other people around you can also receive signal from the device.

So yes my house would be a small cell tower... It is a 2 piece design... One half goes where you get the best signal..the other your worst..
I filed a service request with a person on the team from New Mexico that is piloting this "new device"... They enrolled me about 2 weeks ago..
When my package arrives I'm going to post a video and a review.. I'm so stoked, I'm hoping this thing works like she said it would...

Got one in our store a few days ago. It sucks in the store because it can only handle 4 devices at a time... And we have 10+ demo phones... So the slots are always taken. The hand off from booster to network is pretty awful also

Did they give you any idea as to the pricing? I've been told by tmo reps that something like this would be released this year at a reasonable cost.

It would be compared to a femtocell... I'm not sure how well they work or the signal strength.. This cel-fi receiver works really well.. The signal drops when I go outside.. So it doesn't put out a whole lot of extra signal.. But it is very reliable/consistent..
This uses an existing 3g signal.. It keeps a very constant connection too.. The base fluctuates between 1 and 2 bars and the output box has a 9 for signal output. It dropped down to 4 and 5 last night but I was still getting full service 3g..
I've been able to upload and download files like never before.. This has seriously changed my perspective of tmo... I'm not even in a "true" 3g area.. I get flow over from 2 bigger cities 45 mins north and south of me..

although I think you said that this simply repeats an existing 3g signal, can you confirm that this does NOT use your home broadband connection?
Is the repeater in any way connected to your home network?
The repeater is not connected to anything, or plug into anything beside a power cord.. Just uses the existing 3g network

Anyway what zip do you live in? No 3G is reflected on the coverage map?

T-Mobile Network Issues

Hey, anyone else have network issues with the N1 today? Seems like none of my calls or texts are going through, but I have signal and everything. I went outside to use 3g, worked for a little and then stopped.. So I did a airplane off/on and now the data wont connect. Went back inside it connected again but text and calls wouldnt work.
Anyone else having any issues?

You need to provide more info like your general location. It might be a local issue or trouble with your phone.
I was on my phone all day in calls and data with no problems. I'm in the Chicago area.

i had the same problem yesterday. It only happened to me at home when i left running around town i was able to connect for data. Also it was raining here so maybe that contributed to it

I've only had issues in my house, but that's because my house is a service-killer. No bars anywhere downstairs, but almost full 3G bars in my room. lol
Have you tried the new 5.XX series radios yet? I'm running 5.08 and notice little to no data loss or other data issues. There are moments of weirdness, but a quick disable/enable of mobile data does the trick in the most severe of situations.
Gonna upgrade to 5.12 now and see what's different (apparently touchscreen ****ty-ness is fixed). Worth a shot. Use fastboot though, never flash a radio in recovery, leaves too much up to chance.
I feel ya.. I was in universal last night and I had 4-5 bars of 3g and no internet, or at least really slooooow internet when it did work. T mobile needs to ramp up Orlando's and others servers/towers. When too many people use the internet at the same time it kills the towers bandwidth. While at Universal's Horror nights I figure everyone in the 45min-2Hr lines for the houses are using it. So that is bad. But once I left Orlando it worked fine.
Had Froyo Radio... Flashed new 5.12 today one and seems better. At least Agps is working much better.
Glad to know it's not just me. I had been searching on the Internet for people with the same issues and decided to come here. I'm in stl and my data connection will either work or not. Ive tried turning off the phone and then back on, airplane, etc.
Right now it works but it's nowhere near the 4 megs i was pulling last night, its hovering around 500 Kbps when it decides to work. Im sure tmobile is just upgrading some stuff.
Looks like its just Orlando where problem exists.

+1. It is not showing you 3g service...
Doesn't the Speedtest app need location turned on so it can select the most appropriate server for you. Otherwise you get the zero test.
Looks like an outage to me. Crappy service wouldn't get you zero, let alone NeGaTiVe ZeRo!!
Can you access any other internet page? It's possible a route between you and the server you're trying to do a speedtest with is down as well.

I never assume when I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue. I'd try to go to a couple of pages in the browser first if they don't connect you may have a sprint issue. I've had the app do this to me to when I was perfectly able to connect to actual sites.

i have been having the same problem here in WI. befere i had my EVO i was on a HERO with everything working ok(slow phone but at least data worked). but, now when i switched to the EVO i no longer had a data connection. the phone wont load any pages; its been a month now.
i have been in contact with sprint about the issue but they arent helping really. i keep receiving error code 104 "sign in failed". sprint claims "software problem" but i dont see how that could be. I used the most recent available RUU and then OTA the latest 3.70.651.1 and still nothing. i even rooted and tried flashing earlier radios with no change. also updating profile and reprovisioning data did nothing. so if nothing changes fast i want to be refunded all this time i have been without data.
My Sprint 3G speeds are balls-deep in fail. I have a Droid 2 on VZW and for fun I ran a speed test tonight and came up with:
.24 mbps download / .05 upload / 299 Ping from Sprint and
.95 mbps download / .25 upload / 128 Ping from VZW
I'm wondering if it's a nationwide issue? My 3G speeds have been incredibly laggy in loads of places (it's embarrassingly slow in comparison to even T-Mobile?! at some points). Hoping it's not a permanent issue of some sort.

Bayonne=home...newark/irvington= work. Highly populated areas as they are all 5 min from manhatten.

Phone signal in basement

Hey, I'm currently working with a HTC HD2 with a Froyo Android on it and having difficulties in the basement.
I've recently moved into a new rental house (am a University student) and was given a room in the basement (not much choice there since I signed up late for housing). Anyways I've noticed I get 1-2 bars in the basement which is fine (so I thought) but I'm not receiving any text or phone calls! Whenever I walk outside with my phone there's multiple texts waiting for me and whenever I meet my parents they question why I never pick up the phone (I dont even have missed calls showing).
Now with my closest friends I have whatsapp/fb chat/google talk which is fine but for employers who I give my resume to, or friends I occasionally meet up with they have no way to contact me :S so was wondering if there's any way to boost my signal in the basement?
I've read about a few signal boosters and repeaters but they are costing hundreds of dollars which is out of my price range but really do need to fix something or my social life is going down the drain next semester :S
Thanks in advance
forgot to mention, it wont even send texts as well at two bars... so sad T__T

Go outside. Solves both your social life problem and signal problem.
Maybe AT&T will have better signal and you can just switch to like Straight Talk.

Hey just downloaded a signal booster app last nite (Fresh Network) and it doesn't fix the problem completely... but if i hold the phone exactly above my mini-fridge and send texts they usually go through after 3-4 attempts which is nice but sad to see there's no better solutions

Signal booster apps are a scam. I hope you didn't pay for it.
You should connect it to a strong wifi network and use wifi calling.

Hey, no didn't pay for it but I personally disagree. It feels like it does help (although the difference isn't very much)
And yea was debating on going pure WiFi but seems like a lot of hassle to have two different numbers, or is there a way to keep same number?? Sorry not very sure how WiFi networks work, if you could recommend a good one that'd be great

Most T-Mobile smartphones have built in wifi calling. No porting or different numbers. You just connect to a wifi network and enable it in the settings.

The HTC HD2 is a Windows phone, right? I believe only T-Mobile Blackberry and Android phones support UMA.
