Is anyone else having spotty 3G coverage where as the same sim is having proper 3G coverage with another device?
Please report back.
Regards.

I haven't noticed any difference here.

Thats the thing with smart phones, being on 3G most of time, you don't realize the 3G speeds.

My 3g was solid when i went int town... ****ty at home but thats what wifi is for
personally i think if there is a problem its with tmobile's network... they just rolled out a new system and their service has never been "verizon" as it is... give it time children... i think everyone just likes to throw a fit about everything for the sake of kickin and screaming

haha i just checked the map around my house and there is like speckles of 3g all around my house but not directly over where my house would be... i get 3g in random parts of my house and edge upstairs in my room... pretty funny that the map of their reflects my situation so well
i cannot wait to get back to tempe, the whole phoenix metro area is one big purple blotch on the coverage map lol

I totally agree... but have a look:

How can the same provider (T-mobile) have 3G in the G1 but Edge on the Nexus One?

Its quite possible though that this is a measure implemented by Google to keep the phone in low power EDGE mode when you are not actively using the data connection? That way the phone lasts a lot longer? Just guessing...

I think it's more of a T-Mobile issue than a N1 issue. I originally ordered it with a T-Mobile SIM/plan, but ended up having to use it with AT&T on EDGE since I couldn't get a signal at all indoors and it dropped down to GRPS when I was inside a restaurant in the middle of Downtown LA!

DING DING DING! i read through a good portion of the google thread at the top and then skimmed the rest and thats what i was thinking may be happening... the guy was playing pandora on 3g with no problem, soon as he gets near it to play around it goes to edge? sounds to me like maybe a power saving mechanism... like the cpu it only uses the high end data rates when necessary, crafty if thats actually what its doing and it is working right... I shall run tests tomorrow when i go into town for dinner and such
personally though, the phone has been out on the streets for like 72 hours... bite your tongue for 10 days straight and if **** still doesnt fly by your book you have 4 days left on that RMA date... iphone release days anyone? att/apple about cried...

Probably because the Nexus One can't use AT&T 3G network, just 2G.

I've been paying close attention to reception since I got my NOne yesterday, and so far it seems to change at exactly the same times my G1 would. Upstairs 3g is strong, downstairs it drops to EDGE - just like my G1.
The only difference I notice is the NOne does it much faster.

I have a mytouch, G1 and N1 all on tmob and I have 3G on all three all the time, must be certain areas, or larger markets maybe?

Thats another possibility as well.
If you all remember, the 3GS used to 'reflect' the fact that it had dropped out of 3G a lot earlier than the 'iPhone 3G' and that lead ppl to believe that the 3GS has poor 3G reception.
Maybe it is a similar situation here...

Anyone having this problem in the UK?

HSPA+.....

Just got a text from T-Mobile saying HSPA+ is active in my city....Memphis, TN. Havent noticed in difference. Maybe I should do a speed test later.
maybe you need an actual HSPA+ phone.
and maybe they had activated it before they announced it
hspa+ is still faster than the 3g you prob had, so now you might get up to 7.2mbps.. so you could notice a difference even though we dont have hspa enable devices... this is the first time that we can recieve more data than the phone can handle...

yeah i thought about that too. I have an upgrade so I am gonna get the G2 when it comes out. But i still wanna do some test with normal 3g versus HSPA+
Not sure if this is related but when i go to settings and about and signals its showing that im connected to umts (3g) but when i tether to my vibrant it goes to hspda (3.5g).
3g falling in the range of less than 7.2 around 3-4mbps and 3.5g around 5-7. Ive done a speed test.
speedtest.net /result /927922215.png
Im not sure if thats accurate info on the connection type. I also know speedtest sites are never accurate on speeds. Someone let me know.
All I care about is that hsdpa gets me down speeds rivaling my cable connection and up speeds beating my cable connection. 5.5/1
6? Don't need more.
Unless I am at home where tmo never gives me much signal love

I just did the speed test on my Vibrant and thats the speeds I am getting. Dont remember what I was getting before tho.
I live in an HSPA+ city, and I haven't logged above 1.35mbps on the old speed test (usually far less -- around .5). Is that just the way the cookie crumbles (signal strength, etc.) or is that freakishly slow? (Going by the numbers cited in this thread, it sure sounds slow...)

Sprint Evo
Looks like the HSPA+ network to me. You didn't notice anything because you we're already on it. They only announce it after it has a good amount of coverage over the existing HSPA/3G network. It actually starts to come online far before they announce it. I noticed HSPA+ 2 months before they said it was live (outside of the strip where it was turned on during CES or CTIA)

thought our phones were HSPA, but not HSPA+ - are you sure they're not HSPA??
reason i asked, mine has shown the "H" icon where the 3G icon usually is, but only "blue moon" events and maybe for a few hours duration when it does (according to Tmo's map, i'm in a "moderate" coverage area, and in a shallow valley in that area)
on a couple of those occasions i pulled 5.4 - 5.6 Mbps speedtests where i normally pull 1.1 - 1.4Mbps

Check to see if you data roaming is on. That's what it sounds like the problem is.
To help you:
Menu>Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks>Data Roaming: unselect if selected
Turn on Data Roaming Guard if not on.
Turn Data Roaming Sound off.
Uncheck Enable always-on mobile data if checked
Select roaming menu
Make Sprint only is highlighted
Make sure Call guard is unchecked
I'm with you with the poor 3G speeds. I've been getting .63 MBPS download and .5 MBPS upload.
About to check settings
I'm about to check and see if all of these settings are correct on my phone. On an unrelated topic,
has anyone here been experienced ghost touches? My ghost touches are gettting REALLY bad, I'm about to open a thread about it.

i am also having this problem in the past couple of days and i cannot figure out what the problem is....i tried these suggestions and they didnt work, i know its the EVO because i did a speed test with a friends HERO and the hero didnt have slow data issues.
Was having this problem after updating to Fresh 3.2 rom, flashed to stock rooted 2.2 and 3g speeds greatly improved. Not sure what rom you are running but might be worth it to do a nandroid and try flashing to stock rooted to see if your speeds improve.
Cheers

That's exactly what Sprint advertises as their 3G speed... 600k... Which makes that 6Mbps 4G number 10x faster than their 3G network.
In comparison, Sprints 600kbps is outdone by Verizon's 1700kbps in most of the areas where I use mine, but my 2500-3500kbps 4G puts it to shame.
I'm getting slow speeds too. I rarely break 1mbps but on my Pre I definitely used to.
I feel like a recent PRL update or my ROM is setting me back.
I'm running CyanogenMod 8/23 nightly I think... So many people getting problems with the 6.0.0 version that I didn't flash it.

I found that even just accessing the ##data# and all those ##*** menus screw up my 3G speeds... To counter that I do a nandroid backup, do all my configs, and then just nandroid restore. This way I keep the changes and 3G connection isn't crippled.
I just had a rather odd thing happen.
I've had abysmal speed for about 3 weeks... On the order of .2 - .3 down, with latency screaming upwards of 1000.
Now this could be completely coincidental, but I'm going to fiddle with it a lot more to see what's going on - About the same time I started getting abysmal speeds, I got my Seidio extended battery (3500). I had thought about it before, but didn't think it could possibly make a difference.
Soooo, I tested my speed, usual garbage. I powered down the phone, pulled the battery, put it back in, tested my speeds...usual garbage. Power down the phone again, put my original HTC battery back in, test my speeds, and now its cranking along at 1mb+, with a 121 latency. Not amazing, but when you're coming from 0.2 with 1000 latency, its like switching from dialup to FIOS. It's been in a while, I've made a few calls, texts, used the wireless hotspot, and its still going.
I'm going to try pulling it and putting back in the Seidio. I'm still not convinced it's the battery (at least in my case), but I guess we'll see.
I get around 1300Kbps, which I consider to be very good. My associates with iPhones or AT&T blackberries can barely get half that.
Yes, I have the ghost touch problem. Only way to stop them is turn off the screen and start over.
Would love to know why this happens.

I get consistently terrible speeds too. I'm jealous of the guys who think .6mbits is bad. That's 3x what I consistently get. I'd gladly take that. My speeds are only this terrible at my apartment where I actually have fantastic (almost perfect) service all of the time. The tower must be over loaded or something. I wish there were a way to let sprint know The speeds get better at like 3am.
The two really fast speeds are trying out 4G in Grand Rapids about an hour away. The rest are at my apartment. Sigh.

Dear T-Mobile Customer
We have reviewed your recent coverage concern, and you may qualify to be part of a free in-home device trial! The device is designed to boost 3G signal inside your home. We look forward to speaking with you regarding your eligibility...
..contact info, etc..etc...
So I qualified.. The requirements included one bar 3g signal. 3g device, data plan blah... Moderate service, a land line for 911 calls, and single family home.. No apts or highrises I guess..
So I'm in this test group of 1000 lucky tmo customers that get one of these little in home 3g boosters,
Awesome
I'll keep yous guys informed..

It would be compared to a femtocell... I'm not sure how well they work or the signal strength.. This cel-fi receiver works really well.. The signal drops when I go outside.. So it doesn't put out a whole lot of extra signal.. But it is very reliable/consistent..
This uses an existing 3g signal.. It keeps a very constant connection too.. The base fluctuates between 1 and 2 bars and the output box has a 9 for signal output. It dropped down to 4 and 5 last night but I was still getting full service 3g..
I've been able to upload and download files like never before.. This has seriously changed my perspective of tmo... I'm not even in a "true" 3g area.. I get flow over from 2 bigger cities 45 mins north and south of me..

although I think you said that this simply repeats an existing 3g signal, can you confirm that this does NOT use your home broadband connection?
Is the repeater in any way connected to your home network?
The repeater is not connected to anything, or plug into anything beside a power cord.. Just uses the existing 3g network

He's clearly on 4g with full signal bars.
My 4g speeds are hit and miss here in San Antonio, Tx. At home I used to get 10-12Mbps. Now I usually get 5-8Mbps. Here at work I used to get close to 5Mbps with 1 - 2 signal bars. Sometimes I barely get 1Mbps with the same signal, other times it is pushing barely 3Mbps. My signal strength hasn't increased or decreased significantly at least.
Again, there is already a thread about slow data on Sprint here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933900
It's a nationwide issue.
I miss being in 4g coverage. It was basically wifi on the go.
Although the latency would make it respond a second or so later..

Current 3G speed is 1307/533 with only 3/6 bars
4G is 2050/1075
I drove truck across country both 4g and 3g speeds varied depending on population density and even that sometimes didn't matter. Now I sit at home and rarely use 3g 4g doesn't exist but of course we pay for it....It's like paying a huge bill for something I rarely use..At home I'm on wifi.
wireless tether
My friend's tether works with 3g -- he can get on his phone's 3g network wirelessly and wired, but he can't do it with 4g on. Anyone can help?
"4G" on Sprint is an absolute joke. The fact that they make us pay for it is detestable. I kinda knew that 4G was gonna suck, I just wanted the Epic really bad. What can I say? I'm a glutton for punishment. LOL

the seriously you're better off going to another carrier. I like sprint, yes the 4g speeds are not as consistent as I would like, but most errors i see on XDA are user-based because of ignorance (i.e. restoring data from a completely different rom via CWM, SMH), which i believe you have plenty of. Do some fact checking and you'll see that Sprint has the best data plans for the money available.
Stop *****ing and go to Verizon.

Lmao. Could it be a network issue? I have full signal but the speeds are terrible. Sprint better convert to LTE!

It's a whole lot less cluttering when you post the speed.....we honestly don't care/need a screen shot when a (3G xxx / xxx) format works 1000x better
For the third time, yes it's a network issue. And yes there's already a thread about it. First page.
i fix my problem with mines. i just turned of my phone for about 15minutes. now iam back to 5-6mbps. for a few days i was at 1-2mbps.
well the only time I tried 4G was at CES - and it was slower then the 3G - and since Sprint dont have it anywhere but they still always advertise it all the time around my town and its not even in this state!
that sucks almost as much as waiting between posts and just to post in the development section
Dont know if this helps, but it did me...
All these roms are developed in their own home...so the PRL is not for your surrounding area....
I live in New York, so when I did a test at speedtest.net it showed me in Kansas...I updated my PRL and my location was back in NY and my test speed doubled.
Does this make sense?

Anybody noticed slower T-mobile speeds lately?

I am in Metro Detroit and my speed used to be 20-25 at my home , last week its been 14-15 constantly. Does anybody else see the decrease or is it just me because of the new sim card?

That's still pretty quick. Speed varies on the time of day. If too many people are using the network, it'll get clogged and users will see their speeds lowered. If you're far from the cell tower/antenna your speed will be lower. Having a new sim card simply doesn't affect network speeds.
When I'm at home I don't even get half the speed you get! Because there's this tall apartment building next to my house!

Well, the reason I asked its because I had Tmobile prepaid for 1.5 months and everyday speedtests at my home constantly showed 20-25mbs, but last few days it has changed

I had t-mobile's prepaid before I switched to a contract last year. And speeds are the same whether or not it's on a contract or not. So yeah, like I said perhaps their network is filled with people using it so you will see lower speeds. Also, during peak hours lowers the speed you normally get as well. Orrrr T-Mobile is trolling you. Hmmmm....

I guess something is going on with their network, perhaps LTE preparation. Look what I get now
Definitely. At work I used to get 18-19Mbps down, now I get 8-9.
Best not to think about it and just use it. No need to stress it out. Lol.

Yeah, I've also been getting the INSANE upload speeds, but I can only imagine it's a bug.

****, i barely get fast upload speeds from Comcast at home. Came back from Hong Kong and had 2gb worth of video from concert i saw there...took a while to upload all that onto BOX account...
I get 2 bars at home...9mbps. I dont even get HSPA +15 outside rarely...only say that in Hong Kong 100% of the time.
You're complaining about slow speeds when you're getting well over 10Mbps!!
In downtown Chicago I get 10-19Mbps depending on the time of day. At home (about 25 minutes from downtown Chicago) I get 2-5Mbps

lol I am not complaining, I am trying to figure out whats the deal. I am sure the difference I have is not because of congestion. At my home speed differs only 1-3mbs during busy hours compare to lets say 2am. It has been steady 20-25mbs. I literally have been running speedtest every day during last month and a half to see if they gonna throttle me or if I use too much data and just testing out speeds
Heh... And you still complain? I'm in front of a TMO signal tower and it's been getting worse since 3 days ago.

My network type shows HSPAP, what is it? Why no HSPA+42

The Testing application (*#*#4636#*#*) will show HSPAP, the phone status in the settings application should show HSPA+:15 or HSPAP:15. HSPAP is HSPA+. The status won't show HSPA+ 42, because the number indicates connection type and not speed.
I feel your pain as well.
That usually my average all the time with this damn phone even in parts of NYC!!
I just dont understand it.

I've been getting blazing speeds lately. Even in places where my old verizon had no service. It's a given that i need to be outside to get 30+ mbps but i'm happy getting 15 mbps inside a bunch of concrete. The uploads have been pretty good as well.
Definitely slower for me. I used to get 20 down, 15 up, now I get 10 down .12 up on HSPA+. When I go into town and I get LTE though, I get around 30 down 12 up
