HSPA+..... - Vibrant General

Just got a text from T-Mobile saying HSPA+ is active in my city....Memphis, TN. Havent noticed in difference. Maybe I should do a speed test later.

maybe you need an actual HSPA+ phone.
and maybe they had activated it before they announced it

hspa+ is still faster than the 3g you prob had, so now you might get up to 7.2mbps.. so you could notice a difference even though we dont have hspa enable devices... this is the first time that we can recieve more data than the phone can handle...

yeah i thought about that too. I have an upgrade so I am gonna get the G2 when it comes out. But i still wanna do some test with normal 3g versus HSPA+

Not sure if this is related but when i go to settings and about and signals its showing that im connected to umts (3g) but when i tether to my vibrant it goes to hspda (3.5g).
3g falling in the range of less than 7.2 around 3-4mbps and 3.5g around 5-7. Ive done a speed test.
speedtest.net /result /927922215.png
Im not sure if thats accurate info on the connection type. I also know speedtest sites are never accurate on speeds. Someone let me know.

All I care about is that hsdpa gets me down speeds rivaling my cable connection and up speeds beating my cable connection. 5.5/1
6? Don't need more.
Unless I am at home where tmo never gives me much signal love

I just did the speed test on my Vibrant and thats the speeds I am getting. Dont remember what I was getting before tho.

I live in an HSPA+ city, and I haven't logged above 1.35mbps on the old speed test (usually far less -- around .5). Is that just the way the cookie crumbles (signal strength, etc.) or is that freakishly slow? (Going by the numbers cited in this thread, it sure sounds slow...)

I'm about 45 mins outside of hspa/3g networks, on most days around town, I stay on 3g

Nope. our phones are not HSPA phones, but T-Mobile says that most phones will get faster speeds.

No the h isn't turned on... Gotta check in settings... Only stock phone that shows h is the n1..

Sprint Evo

Looks like the HSPA+ network to me. You didn't notice anything because you we're already on it. They only announce it after it has a good amount of coverage over the existing HSPA/3G network. It actually starts to come online far before they announce it. I noticed HSPA+ 2 months before they said it was live (outside of the strip where it was turned on during CES or CTIA)

thought our phones were HSPA, but not HSPA+ - are you sure they're not HSPA??
reason i asked, mine has shown the "H" icon where the 3G icon usually is, but only "blue moon" events and maybe for a few hours duration when it does (according to Tmo's map, i'm in a "moderate" coverage area, and in a shallow valley in that area)
on a couple of those occasions i pulled 5.4 - 5.6 Mbps speedtests where i normally pull 1.1 - 1.4Mbps

Check to see if you data roaming is on. That's what it sounds like the problem is.
To help you:
Menu>Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks>Data Roaming: unselect if selected
Turn on Data Roaming Guard if not on.
Turn Data Roaming Sound off.
Uncheck Enable always-on mobile data if checked
Select roaming menu
Make Sprint only is highlighted
Make sure Call guard is unchecked
I'm with you with the poor 3G speeds. I've been getting .63 MBPS download and .5 MBPS upload.
About to check settings
I'm about to check and see if all of these settings are correct on my phone. On an unrelated topic,
has anyone here been experienced ghost touches? My ghost touches are gettting REALLY bad, I'm about to open a thread about it.

i am also having this problem in the past couple of days and i cannot figure out what the problem is....i tried these suggestions and they didnt work, i know its the EVO because i did a speed test with a friends HERO and the hero didnt have slow data issues.
Was having this problem after updating to Fresh 3.2 rom, flashed to stock rooted 2.2 and 3g speeds greatly improved. Not sure what rom you are running but might be worth it to do a nandroid and try flashing to stock rooted to see if your speeds improve.
Cheers

That's exactly what Sprint advertises as their 3G speed... 600k... Which makes that 6Mbps 4G number 10x faster than their 3G network.
In comparison, Sprints 600kbps is outdone by Verizon's 1700kbps in most of the areas where I use mine, but my 2500-3500kbps 4G puts it to shame.
I'm getting slow speeds too. I rarely break 1mbps but on my Pre I definitely used to.
I feel like a recent PRL update or my ROM is setting me back.
I'm running CyanogenMod 8/23 nightly I think... So many people getting problems with the 6.0.0 version that I didn't flash it.

I found that even just accessing the ##data# and all those ##*** menus screw up my 3G speeds... To counter that I do a nandroid backup, do all my configs, and then just nandroid restore. This way I keep the changes and 3G connection isn't crippled.
I just had a rather odd thing happen.
I've had abysmal speed for about 3 weeks... On the order of .2 - .3 down, with latency screaming upwards of 1000.
Now this could be completely coincidental, but I'm going to fiddle with it a lot more to see what's going on - About the same time I started getting abysmal speeds, I got my Seidio extended battery (3500). I had thought about it before, but didn't think it could possibly make a difference.
Soooo, I tested my speed, usual garbage. I powered down the phone, pulled the battery, put it back in, tested my speeds...usual garbage. Power down the phone again, put my original HTC battery back in, test my speeds, and now its cranking along at 1mb+, with a 121 latency. Not amazing, but when you're coming from 0.2 with 1000 latency, its like switching from dialup to FIOS. It's been in a while, I've made a few calls, texts, used the wireless hotspot, and its still going.
I'm going to try pulling it and putting back in the Seidio. I'm still not convinced it's the battery (at least in my case), but I guess we'll see.
I get around 1300Kbps, which I consider to be very good. My associates with iPhones or AT&T blackberries can barely get half that.
Yes, I have the ghost touch problem. Only way to stop them is turn off the screen and start over.
Would love to know why this happens.

I get consistently terrible speeds too. I'm jealous of the guys who think .6mbits is bad. That's 3x what I consistently get. I'd gladly take that. My speeds are only this terrible at my apartment where I actually have fantastic (almost perfect) service all of the time. The tower must be over loaded or something. I wish there were a way to let sprint know The speeds get better at like 3am.
The two really fast speeds are trying out 4G in Grand Rapids about an hour away. The rest are at my apartment. Sigh.

Hspa vs Hspa+

I found it pretty interesting reading through Anandtechs Nexus S review when they compared speedtests in an Hspa+ zone between the Nexus S and MyTouch4g. His tests showed that the average dl/ul speeds in an Hspa+ area are virtually identical, obviously results will vary depending on your location but I think it speaks to how the technology itself works and what you can expect in real world use.

Another thing of note is that the NS doesn't suffer from any sort of "death grip."
I used HSPA on my Vibrant last summer, and believe me it's fast enough. HSPA+ is just going to kill your battery faster, I can live without it.

damn your lucky. even with full bars and the H symbol on the notification bar i've never seen more than 2.3/1.0. Just another reason why i don't mind that the NS doesn't have HSPA+ since it'll be 2-3 years until t-mobile gets around to getting anything above 7.2 here.

[Q] Bay Area: 4g slower than 3g?

I finally tried the "new" 4g I get four out four 4g bars pretty much everywhere in that area. So far so good.
But when I test the speed with the speedtest.net app or testmy.net site, I am always getting only 0.4mbps download speed (but normal 0.9 mbps upload speed). 3g download speed is 1.2mbps
I also tried another EVO with the same result (both hardware version 3). I don't think it is a hardware issue, because last year I tried my EVO in a different area and got 8mpbs (with four bars).
I tried the two latest wimax versions (and updated the profile):
EVO_WiMAX_27167_R01
EVO_WiMAX_26023_R01
Does anybody have an idea why the download speed is so slow (with excellent signal strength)?
PS
I am not looking for confirmation that download speed in the bay area is fast. I believe that, I am rather interested in possible explanations, what could be wrong on my phone.
Probably something wrong going on there. I've been getting 4g in the bay area for at least 3 months. I've maxed out at 9.5 mbps...
Yes, something is probably wrong. What Wimax version did you flash?
+1 to it being fast in the Bay Area. Have gotten as high as 1.1 MByte/sec (with a -64dBm signal).
Stock EVO, and a Sierra 250U for use at the hotel.
What wimax version do you guys have on your phones?
What else could make a difference?
For example ad-blocking (via /etc/hosts or ad-free) does interfere with 4g web browsing, but I don't have any ad-blocking software or hosts file.
Again, this is the first time I am having issues with 4g. Last time I used 4g was 2months ago (before the official roll-out), but had no problems.
I got 8mb to the speed test app last night at the in n out on 101 and rhengstorf

4G Speeds fine for me
I have a Evo 4G hardware version 0004 and my speeds are almost 10Mbps in the bay. Same in Sacramento.
I think mystery solved.
I went to a Sprint store to compare with other devices and they had the same problem.
FYI, tested from Stanford campus with almost no 4g signal and got 2.4 Mbps down and 0.5 up. Not great compared to others though, but I was indoors.
EVO 4G, CM7-GX4, Savaged-Zen
seems to be sporatic coverage to me. When i test in certain areas the speeds are awesome but when i'm at home, whether inside or outside, the speeds are indeed worse than 3g. Give it some time i guess maybe they'll bolster the coverage a bit more as they expand.

That's what I've noticed in SF. I have gotten nice d/l speeds at various places I've been but overall it's sporadic at best and 3G seems to be my best bet overall for the places I frequent.
I am not sure that this is a coverage issue. My antenna signal strength is very high and the tower is 0.2 miles away (according to spring). I tested in areas with only one bar and still got at least 2mbps.

I don't think it is a bandwidth hog. I tested many days around the clock always the same problem.
Yes, I called Sprint, I tried to explain that I tried other EVOs and got the same problem. And that the phone works very well everywhere else in Bay Area But they think it is a problem with my phone (after the "advanced support technician" remotely updated the phone and also did an "handsfree activation").
I guess the problem is that they haven't received (m)any calls from that area yet. The most surprising part is that the sprint store in that area apparently didn't complain about the problem either ...

Exciting news.
After 13 months Sprint/Clearwire fixed the tower and I have full 4g speed now.
Average speedtest roughly 9.5mbps down and 1.4mbps up.
Speedtest via hotspot: 4.5 mbps down.

Its been like that for the last 6 months here.
Id rather roam 1x on verizon than use sprint's 3g. 100% honest. I get about 100kbps on a good day.. average around 30 kpbs right now

Getting great 4G speeds in San Francisco, about 8.5 Mbps download with one to two bars of strength. Compared to my .3 Mbps download speeds with full bars of 3G, it's amazing. By the way, my mom's Samsung Epic 4G is getting 5x faster 3G speeds...any reason for that? Is the Evo just that bad?
@NxNW thanks for the link update. But the map doesn't show any 4g coverage.
You can see 4g coverage here: http://www.clear.com/coverage
3g speed has been around 0.7mbps average in the last couple of months (despite the data capacity upgrade). It used to be 1.5 mbps ...

Download????? only 2.97? WTF
Man LTE is sooooo amazing. But the uploading being 22 is f**king awesome!
just thought I would clear this up, The high uploads are due to the speedtest app not being able to measure LTE uploading correctly.
These scores are completely inaccurate.
It might as well say 99999999.9999999mbps upload.

Oh that makes sense. But I get those download speeds on my Moto Atrix!
Is anyone else having a problem with their atrix switching to Edge? I'll try to run a speed test or watch a video and it will just randomly switch to edge, then no signal, then back to H. What's the deal?
That was the point of this post. Most atrixes (Atrices?) are faster than this. Mine gets 5 down
Intersting results - mine were much different in Phoenix AZ.
I think in general the speedtest app is broken. When doing it on the webpage I was getting more consistantly between 15-20 MBps download and 5 MB upload.
I am actually giving back my atrix tomorrow. Best phone I have ever had, but the network is not even 3g speed out here (even with a microcell in my house I still can not get over 1.5 MB download and we all know about the stellar upload speed)

Except.... EV-DOrA (CDMA 3g) Never goes above 1.4mbps down
Techcruncher said:
just thought I would clear this up, The high uploads are due to the speedtest app not being able to measure LTE uploading correctly.
These scores are completely inaccurate.
It might as well say 99999999.9999999mbps upload.

Speedtest worked fine with Evo WiMax "4G".

I thought it was 3.1 max. Where do you see 1.4?

try going to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and running it through your browser. curious to see what you'd get there.
So if the Atrix only shows H+ than why does my Atrix switch a 3g symbol everyonce in awhile for a few seconds. I dont understand it.
My data has been so bad in my area I'm getting very upset, Im about to take my phone back and try to get out of contract if they dont fix it.

Explain what makes LTE different such that Speedtest does not work.

LTE uses a single channel(SC)-FDMA while WiMax still uses OFDMA for their respective uplink signaling. OFDMA is what 3G uses, hence why you can still get an accurate reading on the Evo.
correct me if im wrong but doesnt the thunderbolt have horrendous battery

I don't know what the max is but usually see 2 - 2.5 on it here in the better areas.
@shanghei
People may be able to figure that out when people actually own it.

Why do review sites keep posting low download speeds with HSPA+?

I don't get it I keep seeing them post speeds of 200-300KBps with HSPA+........ running speedtest on my GS2 I'm getting around 1.5MBps and yes I mean Byte and not bit. HSPA+ in theory can go to 21mbps so there is still room to grow to at least 2MBps with HSPA+. Then with DCHSPA+ with the Nexus 4 on paper you can reach speeds of 4-5MBps and my friend who lives in another country has a DCHSPA+ modem and he is speedtested it for me and got 3.8MBps.
I see all these LTE 4G speeds and they're getting from 21mbps - 32mbps in most cases which is like 2.5MBps -4MBps in speed.
I mean I'm getting not far off that right now with Three in the UK on my GS2 and I haven't even tried a DCHSPA device yet, I'm not sure if three support it.
I don't get where these sites are getting 200-300KBps speeds from?
On T-Mobile with the galaxy s2 I got speeds around 15Mbps down and about 3-4Mbps upload on their HSPA+42. Nexus 4 should get the same. Although T-Mobile has very limited HSPA+ where I am living now so I won't be able to test in that same area for a while.. Those reviews are garbage, just saying

Yeh so you're getting like 1.8MBps which tbh is more than enough for a mobile but also close to these poor LTE speeds which are really just DCHSPA+ speeds.

It's more than enough for what I need data for, which is basically streaming music, the occasional youtube video, and webpages/checking email.

It's also not much slower than LTE right now......
I don't see how all these sites seem to be getting such low speeds.
Its just depends on your luck on how close the celltower is to you. At my work its over 20Mbps with an SII, at home its more around 5Mbps.
I have seen lots of t-mobile and AT&T cell sites. Really depends on if they have upgraded to a true fiber, like using the local Comcast or other high speed provider. Or if they are still using the multiple t1 lines to power it.
A lot of sites with multiple cell providers, usually AT&T will have copper into site, while the others have a fiber connection. Just depends. =/ Even if you see fiber into the cell site, it can just mean they are using it for distance run, coming from t1 station down the road.
Some of these sites have some really old stuff in them. Kinda hit or miss on the ones that have a really good internet connection to them.
My input. Just from seeing the cell sites.
And if you are right under a cell site, you never connect to that one...to much signal. It connects you to one further away

They must be using AT&T because their HSPA+ network can be pretty slow sometimes, compared to T-Mobile that is. In my area AT&T gets about 2-4Mbps down and maybe 1Mbps up.
I had my father's galaxy s2 (42mbps) and my galaxy nexus (21mbps) right next to each other dieting a speed test.
Galaxy s2 always got double the speed. He was getting 14mbps and I couldn't break 7mbps
I know radios and software and everything else come into play, but the potential for more is there

Unless you're on att or coming from another carrier to tmo and not sure what you'll get why would you be worried about this. If you're already on tmo you should get the same or better speeds, correct?

And I'm pretty sure there will be different radios we can install. I'll probably install the radio I have on my sgs2.

I was wondering how the speeds actually were since I'll be coming from Verizon.
With tmo in south fla you will get around 8-23 down and 1-5 upload.
What about speeds for AT&T in southern california?
Here is a wild guess; (most) reviewers are in an area which was affected by Sandy.
That's just B.S. I live close to DC area and I got upto 21 MBPS on my HTC ONE S. LTE doesn't necessarily mean its faster than HSPA+ .T-Mo's HSPA+ is awesome but probably ignorant people can't tell the difference.
You can check data speeds for your carrier at rootmetrics. In my area, T-Mobile gets at best 1 mb download. Verizon has LTE here which gets 20 - 30 mbps. Stupid fast. That being said, I'm probably going with AT&T via Straight Talk.

This is a very bad idea.
1) The flash will most likely fail.
2) If it did somehow flash your baseband will be screwed.
These are theoretical speeds, anyway. I have never had more than 7 or 8 Mbps down on my phone. And it just depends on cellphone traffic through that particular tower, I think. I have done speed tests countless times when I barely crack 1 Mbps on "HSPA+".
This is what I am getting with t-mobile, and i am happy lol
