Anybody have any more specific information when 4g is dropping for Minneapolis?
I grazed across an online article that mentioned August 2010. I can't find it buried in my browser history and I'm not quite sure where they got the month from to begin with, so don't hold me to it and take it with a grain of salt. The general consensus is that it should be dropping IN 2010 though.
I've heard it's starting to pop up, but can't confirm, and when I leave 4G on in the Downtown area, all I get is disappointment and a dead battery. Doesn't help, but keeping my eye out.
I have heard at worst by end of 2010, and at best fall 2010. Here is hoping its fall 2010, also if anybody has gotten 4G in mpls let us know and where!
I have heard rumors of Brooklyn Park being a test area for the 4G roll out. I have yet to verify tho.
Anyone know?
-Midnigh7-
Live in Coon Rapids, work at the airport, I haven't picked up a signal anywhere inbetween
Why MPLS? Why not Saint Paul? We're the state capitol! Damn you Sprint!
througAugust. Directly from sprint rep.
There was a test i heard. It happened at the sprint store last week on launch day. Don't quote me on that. But the guy at sprint told me in august for sure. They got an email from corporate last Thursday. I asked them specifically because I didn't want to get the phone if 4g wasn't on the horizon.
a buddy of mine works for Sprint in corporate sales. The last he heard it was "by the time the leaves change".
There is (or at least was, I haven't checked myself) a 4g tower on the Holiday Inn in DT Mpls. He said they were testing the signal for about a mile radius around the hotel. If anyone checks it out let us know!
I will confirm this in a couple of hours will be right next to that building.
I have heard that it's starting now (including that tower in downtown MSP) and will be done by fall from a tower engineer on the project.
Cool, that's sooner than I thought. I guessed it would be around November / December.
FWIW, I got my Evo on launch day at the Minnetonka corporate store. I was told both September and summer. Also, the guy at the phone kiosk at SAMS in St Louis Park said July or August. I think no one knows for sure. I'm hoping for July.
I can confirm 4g in Minneapolis at south second st and south second ave near bobby and steves... the upload is at 1.3 and the download is at 3.87 megs it makes the qik app actually work.

Nope not lying... I kept hearing rumors about people getting a 4g signal in minneapolis... and rumors about ther being a 4g repeater on top of a holiday inn. So i kept my 4g on while going through minneapolis by bobby and steves and BAM 4G! Enjoy if you get to go by that area!

One more confirmation for good measure. Almost couldn't believe it. I drove around the U area and had pretty good signal - strongest right outside of Carlson. My download peak was around 4 with a lower average and upload peak was about 1.5. I just hope when they say "Minneapolis" that they really mean downtown and the surrounding 'burbs (EP, pref. ).
Yeah I would assume they'd mean the whole 694 494 loop but who knows
I also live in Minneapolis area, and heard July-august for 4g.
I am around the yankee stadium ara and I am now getting a 4G signal my download speed is 3.15 mbps and upload is 0.99. damn I hope it is in metro area. I hope someone else can confirm this finding.
I get 4G in some parts of Brooklyn. I can connect in: Bensonhurst, Midwood, and Marine Park.
My highest speedtest result was 4.07mbps down and 1.1 mbps up
4g is not official yet till end of this year in NY.they jus beta testing as of now.i get 4g in queens but not stable and my max speed was 4.08mbps DL.
It'll be more like3.5G until mid 2011 or so but Sprint is still ahead for now, I get "4G" at work it's ok but definately not at it's peak.

No just a rough estimate, when 3G came out it took about a year after it was avaiable in my area to see anywhere near the promised speeds of that infrastructure. My comment was a guess, I live in NYC and we get a signal here ad there but it's pretty weak at the moment. I guess it will take up to a year before we start seeing anything near the promised 4G speeds.
I've gotten 4G in Syracuse and in Rochester. I was surprised to turn on 4G and have a signal.
NYC had a soft launch since April. It was supposed to be activated since mid January, but the process haven't been easy. A city notoriously known for having a huge building infrastructure, they have to make sure they get everything correct at the initial launch. Likewise with San Francisco. Also by the end of the year, Sprint/Clearwire will be switching to 802.16e Enhanced, via software upgrade + additional towers, so expect more work to be done. This would bridge you guys closer to true 4G with either WiMax 2, LTE, and TD-LTE.
That's awesome I will be in nyc for a game in a couple of weeks can't wait to finally try 4g out. It's no where near me in cali.

lol, we don't even get acceptable 3G in northern indy. According to a poster here (via Sprint), we will be getting a tower in Carmel, one in Westfield later this year.
When I bought mine the lady said she didn't expect 4g until probably next summer for us but that was just her guess. My 3g sucks as well down here around the beech grove/greenwood area.
I can second the 3G sucking in northern indianapolis...very very slow

The people at Sero told me 4th quarter 2010. This was just before the Evo was released.
I was getting around 250 - 600 kbps on the old radio.
I just updated the radio to the latest and now im getting around 700 - 2300 kbps in castleton area.
Its not super but its better then when I just bought the phone.

That was me that posted that. The sprint rep I talked to said one tower at the end of august (carmel) and one in december (westfield). I will say that I am buying a house in Broadripple and I get great speeds theres, anywhere from 1.1 mbps to 1.5 mbps
Indy isn't listed anywhere on Sprint's 2010 projected WiMax expansion, I would estimate Q2 2011 at the earliest. I just moved from Indy (BRip) to Denver (NW) and my areas are comparable for 3G speeds (1-1.75MB)
4g Indianapolis
Ok this is what I have heard and if anyone knows differently please do tell. Last month I talked to sprint when I was changing my plan and I asked about 4g. The rep told me that they were currently working on 4g in Indy and that it should be up and running by the end of 2010. she said that they would push notifications to customers when it went live. So I thought this was just hot air and I asked an IT guy at work if he knew anything because my company relies heavily on sprint. he said that the airport was to have 4g working by the end of Oct. A coworker with an Evo was in a sprint store several days ago and he said there were out of state technicians there working and when he struck up a conversation they told him they were working on the 4g connections by the airport, downtown Indy, Carmel and Fishers area which coincides with new tower locations on sprints website map for new towers in Indy. Has anyone heard anything? I mean it would only make since since all the big shing dings that come here.
I was just in the airport last week and didn't get 4g at all.
i get 1.3 Mb/600Kb in delphi indiana and surrounding areas, but the closer i get to a bigger city such as lafayette/west lafayette that speed is 1/3 to 1/2 of what i get in delphi.
i always thought this was strange.

Yea I noticed that depending on my location in the city it will go anywhere from 700kb to 1.3.
I work right next to the airport and I can vouch that there is no 4g yet. I scan for a signal just about everyday. Maybe some day.

Maybe they will just drop it all on us at once. I saw an app once and I cant remember the name but it runs in the background and it periodically checks for 4g, 3g and wifi hotspots. It will then show you on a layered map what signals are where but its dependent on people letting it run on their phones. Does anyone know the name for this?

Would that be Sensorly Map Viewer?
You'll see 4g signals in testing for quite awhile before it is officially announced. This has been consistent for all market launches thus far...

Yes thats the app. I went to their website and you can see where its at in other places....Its crazy..Indiana looks so barren
My area was barren too, so I've been collecting/uploading data for a couple weeks now.
It's really cool to see your data processed and on the map very quickly.
The app is a huge battery hog...
Swyped from my Fresh EVO via XDA App
I lived there a couple years.
Trust me, it is called "Naptown", there won't be 4g until every other city gets it.
Ok so did anyone have trouble last week with texting or any data services? Did you contact sprint to find out why? Word from Sprint is that it was part of 4g implementation.....should be up and running within the next moth.
T-Mobile announced more cities now with HSPA+ during the myTouch release. Here's the list of cities:
With its latest expansion, T-Mobile’s HSPA+ footprint now includes Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss.; Denver, Colo.; Huntsville, Ala.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Omaha, Neb.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento, Calif.; and West Palm Beach, Fla. T-Mobile expects to reach 100 major metropolitan areas and 200 million people in 2010.

Personally, the fact that San Jose is getting is best news ever as I get my phone tomorrow. Hopefully T-Mo expands more, bringing the love to more people around this part of town. Chicago gets all the love all the time!
Nice!
I was told by a rep that it wasn't comin in my area till November but this is really good news.
Thanks for the post...

no where on tmonews does it say these things maybe I looked it over can you provide a link?
SO these cities mentioned are HSPA+ live right now ?
Huntsville, AL \o/
We deserve it more than any other city in the state
Yes, Huntsville is the place to be in AL.
Too bad I live just outside of Huntsville where I only get edge. I look forward to having faster podcast downloads on the way to work though, once we get HSPA+.

Definitely. Awesome city although I was admittedly hesitant to move to the hick-state initially. Great place to be in the tech business. Hopefully Google brings that lovely fiber here...
I actually am in Hazel Green so only get edge and 3G in certain parts, but most of my phone-using day is in Huntsville area. 3G leaked from Huntsville out to Hazel Green rather quickly and I hope it does the same with HSPA+... Actually, the first day I saw 3G symbol ever was within Hazel Green limits on my way to work with my new G1 one day...

It was the same post as their myTouch HD launch. TMo announced it, see if you can confirm it by reading a press release perhaps.
It's not updated at TMo's official website, but it should be here pretty soon.

Couldnt agree more with the fiber comment, this town(Huntsville) could definitely use it, especially considering the massive growth its experiencing right now.
Ive noticed the HSPA+ for about a week now, I used to get intermittant HSPA connections on my myTouch slide a few weeks back, but nothing solid, however in the last week I had nothing but HSPA connection no matter where I was at, including the freakin psuedo-bunker I work in, which I had problems even getting Edge in before.

Wow, a lot of people here from the area.
Could definitely use the fiber boost. It's an extremely tech/research-oriented city. I understand the places where the work is being done already have commercial connections, but... just give me the fiber!
If you don't already know, we have the same icon for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+ (the 'H') so it will be hard to tell what network you're really on.

Anyone else from South FL (Tri-County Area (Palm beach.Broward/Miami Dade))?
If Miami, Ft lauderdale and West Palm are getting HSPA+, does that mean the less-major cities between them are as well?
Like Deerfield, Boca, Delray, Pompano, etc since they are between these three cities

I went to the Tmobile store in fort union to play with the G2. The phone had some settings messed up so I couldn't access all the internet, but i could open google's home page and do a basic search. It was MUCH fast than my N1.
Norfolk in the house! I went to the Tmobile store on the 30th, when I received my phone, and the reps were surprised at two things:
I had the phone before them and the fact that the H was showing up in my device.
They concluded that the towers were upgraded, but they were just waiting to "flip the switch".

I was looking at that last night and thinking, no matter how great the EVO x is my EVO still holds it's own. Since Michigan will be blanketed in LTE by 2014, I am going to wait, Sprint has great plans, but lightsquared drama has to negatively impact their LTE roll out.
And why buy a phone in 2012 when I can't use 4G until a year or 2 years later. I did that with EVO, and assumed a Verizon kind of roll out.
I really hope Sprint stays on track with LTE roll out and they may retain me otherwise VZW with unlimited data might get my business (yes if u try hard enough u can get it)
Sent from my Synergized Aggressive Lionfish Evo using the XDA app
Yea, it says they will be ready by 2014, but with no specific rollout dates for my area, Michigan, I will be switching to Verizon in the next few months, once they get a nest gen phone like the One X or something similar. Verizon has had working 4g for over a year in my area now. There's no way I'm waiting another 2 years to get it here, and have dial-up speed 3g in the meantime. I gave Sprint 12 years of my business, and I hate to leave, but in today's world data is everything, and I need that to be able to do my job.
With the announcement one the HTC EVO One for Sprint, I am puzzled as to how they decide what cities to start their rollout of LTE. San Antonio? Baltimore? Kansas City?
No New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, etc.
OK, so Houston and Dallas. Meh.
With an LTE iPhone possibly coming out later this year, how many iPhonies do they think will hang on waiting while both Verizon and AT&T (yuk) are offering LTE in the biggest markets?
Sure, they're saying just wait, but really, how many people have the discipline? I probably will, but only because returning to AT&T is not an option as far as I'm concerned, and I hear horror stories about big red nickle and dimeing their customers.
What incentive do I have to get the HTC EVO One when there won't be any LTE here in LA, while my old EVO can still use WiMax?
On an unrelated question: does anyone know if LTE phones automatically switch between 3G and LTE? One thing I always hated about WiMax is having to manually turn it on every time I want to use it!
Pretty sure LTE would require manual control just like WiMax.

Hey now! Some of use are awful excited that Dallas is on that list!
But seriously. I'm wondering if the Dallas choice was because of the AT&T headquarters and the fact that Sprint phones are getting MURDERED by att speeds. (At least where i'm at)
Nothing against Dallas. Texas is a great country.
I just think Sprint needs to make a big splash about LTE if they want to limit churn. Dan Hesse has done an outstanding job so far, imo. But if I were in charge of Sprint, I would make NY,and LA, among the first cities, just for PR purposes.
Even aliens know to blow up one of those two cities when they first invade Earth!

FIRST ROUND MARKETS (14):
First round markets have no preceding markets before them. NV OEM's will mobilize in these markets and begin deployment. These markets will deploy slowly as there is a significant learning curve to Network Vision. Most first round markets started between December 2011 and March 2012.

Second round markets start based on First Round markets completing before them. There is a lot of variability of when Second Round markets start, between June/July 2012 and December 2012. It will all depend on how quickly the First Round market deployments go. Some preliminary work is being done in advance in these Second Markets as well. I have found the Wimax coverage in Florida to be more than adequate. No, I can't get it at my house, but I have WiFi there. But just about everywhere else when I'm traveling or in even small local cities, I get Wimax.
Sprint is about two years behind on LTE. Not very enticing to stay with them after my contract is up in the Fall. The only reason why I didn't demand early contract termination is because I like my EVO 4G phone and don't feel like spending another $300 on a new Verizon phone at the moment.
