[Q] Slow Start up (white htc evo 4g screen) - EVO 4G General

Hey all,
I have a rather annoying issue and I'm not sure what the culprit is. Anytime I have to reboot my phone it stay on the white htc evo 4g screen for nearly 2 minutes every time. Once I see the CM7 splash screen it goes rather quick, just getting to that point takes for ever. So I flashed the sprint lovers rom and of course it is fine and quick to boot. Wondering if anyone else has the problem?
I've wiped everything many times in hopes of fixing it but no joy. Also I am running cm7.0.2 (which i just did a fresh install after wiping everything numerous times in hope of clearing this problem).
--Steve

What recovery are you using to wipe and flash with? I have had the same thing but it does not always happen. I have flashed the newer nightly 57 and have not seen that problem yet.

I'm having similar issue, it will hang at the htc screen till i do a battery pull and then start it up and goes right through. I'm using clockwork recovery 3.0.0.5 which recovery is the best?

I have the same problem with cm7, and i reflashed it multiple times. This doesnt happen with any other rom i use.

This happens to me as well, it's rather annoying. You're using clockwork, I'm using amonra and it's happening to us both
Sent from MIUI IS BETTER THAN YOURS

I'm using Amon recovery. I guess it's time to logcat what is going on during that time.......

well during the time that it is on that white screen you cannot connect to the device, I was able to right before it flashed over to the cm7 splash screen. So it just sits at the white screen doing nothing???

so no one knows of a solution?

Yeah... go pee or make a sandwhich J/k... mine takes forever to boot too, thought this was just the standard start up time

I'm on myn rls5 and clockwork mod recovery version 2.6 I rebooted my phone last night and it hung on white screen for over 5 minutes till I did a battery pull... After battery pull it hung on white screen for 3 minutes then booted right up..
This is first time I've seen this
Also I did not flash anything... I booted into recovery then clicked reboot now.

this is not an issuie of being stuck, it just takes a about 1:40 to get to the cm7 splash screen. but the stick and sprint lovers rom boot normal.
I would not care but when i see my epic do a boot in like 15 seconds I say why caint my evo do that.

I need to know if everyone have this problem ?
becaue its very annoying and for example sometimes when something doesnt work like GPS ! i need to reboot the phone and it takes 2 minutes on a white screen with full brightness which eats up the battery for 2 minutes as well ! this is a big bug is there any suggestion or explanation for this ?

Not sure of I'll be of any help but... I've noticed that after wiping cache that most roms boot slow. Maybe boot info in cache?
Also considering it doesn't affect the actual rom, and its quick to get to the unlock and home screen, vs sense which is slow to boot imo, its not really a bug... Besides if youre playing around to where you are rebooting you should be near a charger.

This happens to cm7/soap only.
I don't know why; I've read because fastboot isn't enabled or there are so many framework changes
Gimme a couple a days to come up with a new sig that is cool.

Nope, I'm on Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1 with latest Amon RA and have the slow boot from White HTC to the fresh screen then its quick , and I assume by soap you meant to say AOSP

For the longest time I have had this issue and said fml whenever i saw the white screen. i literally put the phone down and do other **** until it boots up. Until now, i thought it was just me. Good thing somebody finally decided to make a thread about it. Someone get a ROM dev up in this *****

Ok, so, after reading this I became aware of my boot time. I am pretty sure my phone boots completely in less than a min... CM7, newest timat, and I use vrsuperwipe a couple times and wipe all user, cache and dalvik. Though it is cool to see my unrevoked splash.

I used to have this problem a while ago, i did different things and did some monitoring...
I believe the culprit is if you only wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache before flashing a new ROM(granting you want to do a clean install). When you do this, some files are still left in SYSTEM and BOOT. Granted most files are written over by a newly flashed rom, but some old files are left behind. The newer version of Amon-RA have the options to wipe BOOT and SYSTEM as well, or you can try using Caulkin's Format All.
I would try giving this a shot. Make a nandroid backup, then do a Caulkin's format all, then do a fresh install of the newest nightly. Don't time the first boot because that's always going to take long. After you reboot a 2nd time, I would see how long that takes.
If that doesn't solve it, just nandroid back and make believe you never saw this message =P

Help! My phone just died - not really sure why

I pulled it out of my pocket since I could feel it heating up and saw it looping on the "Google" screen part of the boot (i.e not loading the ROM).
I'm using the latest SuperAOSP (can't remember exactly which version). Installed it a couple of months ago and didn't touch any of that stuff ever since.
Playing with recovery I get the following message:
"Error mounting /data"
Didn't try formatting /data yet (not sure what the concequences are) and basically didn't do anything. I assume wiping and re-installing the ROM would help, but I'd rather see if there's a way to not go through all that mess.
Meanwhile the phone has been dead for several hours.
Would greatly appreciate your as-fast-as-possible help on this Friday night!
Also - recent activity:
Installed Google+ .apk from here, then uninstalled it; Installed Market Enabler and downloaded Google+ again from the market, in addition to Google Music and Pandora. Uninstalled Music today.
Can't think of anything else that would cause this.
Wiping the data worked but sucked. Plus I don't know what caused it...

Sorry to hear you lost everything. I would recommend SetCPU with a temp > profile to draw your Mhz down to 800 if it reaches 40C or even sooner.

Yeah that sucks. Didn't you have a nandroid backup? (or Titanium)
Did you happen to have the phone stuck on the boot annimation but in a dim light? If yes, then this is something known with roms like cm, superaosp,... the exact cause is not known.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
Unfortunately I only had backups from a couple of months ago.
Also, the screen was stuck on the "Google" part and wouldn't even initialize the ROM.
And I have seen the phone reach higher temps than that... I'm really quite clueless.

Could have been some sort of rom or kernel bug.. what kernel are you using?

Serious lagging...... rooted/no custom ROM

Quick brief:
I am still on 2.1, but I am rooted.......but not using any custom ROM/kernels. I mainly wanted to root to rid of the bloatware. I am rooted, and have CW installed. I used RootExplorer to rid of the bloatware. I have one ongoing issue, and 2 getting progressively worse.
1) My battery has progressively started to wear down faster. I've had my phone over a year now, so I went ahead and purchased a new factory battery. I have properly cycled the battery as you should with a new one (kill it dead, let it charge fully.....did this a couple times). I have not noticed much more of an extended life with the new battery, over the original.
2) I have been using LauncherPro since I rooted. I understand a custom ROM would probably run a ton better, but I barely was able to root my phone successfully by myself.....so I am not sure I want to try flashing it. I really like the customizable features LauncherPro has. Recently though, the phone has gotten really laggy. I notice it most when using the text feature. I had Handcent installed, which I downloaded on the phone at day 1.....so I figured it was that app hanging up. I uninstalled it, and am using the default messaging service. Sometimes its fairly quick, but it still hangs up......even using the default. I also tried DL'ing a new Launcher, and tried Regina. It was lightning fast, but after a few hours....it wouldn't run properly. I assigned it to run as default, but after 3-4 hours.......it would prompt me on which launcher to use.......so I uninstalled it. Now I am still using the default TW launcher.
3) When I rooted, I deleted a few apps that are critical to run nav......like text to speech. I reinstalled them and got my nav working again.....but 90% of the time when I use nav......it takes the upwards of 10-15 minutes for it to find my location. Wtf? My phone is super hot by then too, so obviously my battery drops significantly.
Anyone help out with any sorts of resolution? Fwiw I don't have any apps running that I can see in task manager. I also have cache cleaner......so that is emptied regularly. When I started getting laggy, I installed the cache cleaner.....and it seemed to help alot. Then it got right back to as laggy as it was before......
I'm stumped.
Well, 2.2 came out a while ago and 2.3 is on its way. I say upgrade to 2.2 then to MIUI.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing it up.......sorry for the noobiness.
I have a friend that has flashed his Galaxy multiple times.....so I am going to get him to flash my Fascinate. I'll find the DL for that one, and show him.
Anyone else have any idea why I could be so laggy, so sudden? Also, I noticed lag when using PowerAmp as well.
Not a clue, haven't been on 2.1 in such a long time. 2.3.5 here. But usually doing a full wipe/reinstall solves any lag issues. As for the gps, well, it sucks tremendously on our fascinates. I suggest the MIUI rom and glitch kernel. I get great battery life, no lag, 10 sec gps lock, and so much more

Did you use Super-1-Click-Root to root your phone? It has a nasty side-effect of lagging up the phone post-root (at least in my, and others' experience)
Try turning off your phone, pulling out the battery for a minute, putting it back in and rebooting. That fixed mine.

Nope, I did it using one of the methods in the sticky in this forum. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I'd suggest following the steps to flash completely back to stock FIRST using pentafive's rom here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178544) and ODIN (your friend will know this if they've flashed a lot of phones). Do not use PST, it doesn't always work. Once you get fully back to stock, flash whatever new rom, radio, kernel, etc that you want (see here for a good list... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013312).
I was having a lot of force closes after rooting (manually via adb) and a flash back to stock using penta's ROM corrected them all. I then flashed on to a new ROM and have had zero problems so far.
maybe get 2.2 or 2.3 and get voodoo?
Update:
Haven't flashed a ROM yet, but I got bored and wanted to try some easy things. I popped the cover off and took the SD card out, and rebooted the phone. Fast as lightning on reboot, with the SD card out. I stuck the card back in......and it was fine. It went 3-4 days, then all of a sudden starting lagging again really bad. Mind you, before I just pulled the card out......I clear my cache, don't have any apps running besides the launcher and whatever app I am trying to run, and have also rebooted with/without removing the battery many times......to no avail. So after 3-4 days, when it got laggy again......I took the SD card out and rebooted, and its fast as lightning again.
Corrupt SD card possibly?

Anyone have a suggestion? This has happened many times now, it keeps repeating itself.
Phone starts lagging, removed SD card and reboot, fast as lightning. After 1-2 days, lagging again. Repeat.
If your SD was corrupted the phone would let you know, or things would start disappearing from the card.
This is the nightmare that we fassy owners have got to go through till we find the right Rom and tweak. Gingerbread has made this phone way better whether you use a TW or an Mtd Rom. Do some research and try one of them

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely not afraid to change ROM's, I'm just afraid to do it myself. I'll be doing it in the next week or two, a friend from work is going to flash it for me.
As for the laggy times though......I can't see how the card isn't the culprit. Every single time my phone gets laggy, when I pull the SD card it.....its lightning. A few times also, when the phone is starting to lag......I'll open my gallery and its usually all jumbled up, or it won't show me all of my pictures.
Maybe I need to reformat my SD card? Can I do that through my phone somehow?

Help screen goes black.

I got a problem with a rooted my touch 4g on dark side sense 3.5 I think it is.
My problem is screen goes black after I go past the my touch 4g boot screen and it loads up normal in a black screen and after a couple attempts to get screen to turn on it goes on for like 3 min then goes black again. And I have to keep trying.
I can't get into recovery when I press vol down and power it takes me to the soff screen witch works i can see it. I'll boot it into recovery and it goes black again and I can't see recovery at all.
Any help would be nice. Thanks

Just so your aware it sounds like the power to the screen is being interrupted, that could be a ROM issue but since you experience it in recovery i'd say its very very likely i hardware issue. This means it is most likely time to look for a new phone. I could very well be wrong but if i were you i'd start looking right away. If you have the long term warranty from TMo i'd look into using it now.
Sorry mate

I had this same exact problem, what I did was let my phone sit with the battery out for maybe an hour while using an old "dumb phone" I still have, then when I put my battery back into my phone, I hurried up and booted into recovery and flashed a gb ROM. Stayed on that for a few days and then went back to ICS. I think it was a kernel issue or something, idk.

Freezing of Nexus S

Am I the only one? Every Jelly Bean ROM has the same problem. Sometimes it freezes, and it won't do a thing, I can't even unlock it, it just sits there, black, I can only reboot it by pulling out the battery. It's so annoying. At least 4 times a day. How do I fix this? I tried PA, Stock JB, and now I'm on latest CM10 nightly, I wiped cache and dalvik every time before I flashed a new ROM.
I hope you can help me.
Even I have problem with JB , it hangs for 2 3 seconds n becomes normal. No need to pull the battery n all , it becomes normal by itself. Using stock 4.1

I had the same issue - except that I was in ICS stock...
got worse and worse in time - in the end I even couldn't use my keyboard anymore (whole lower part was unresponsive)
I testet it with some apps from the market which showed that the lower part of my screen didn't response to any inputs
solution was to take my nexus s to a repair center and they replaced the whole touch screen unit
Can you send me links of those apps? My touchscreen responds well but the problem is that the phone entirely hangs, and when I lock it, I can't unlock it anymore. It is I9023

[Review]ultimate jb v5.1 user reviews,problems and solutions

Hi guys
I changed my rom for the first time from stock 4.0.4 to ultimate jb rom.here are the things i think you should know about.we are gonna talk about safe kernel, backup,ui experience, what you gain and what you miss and ofcourse benchmarks and battery.
Ok,probably you have read this "make sure you are on a SAFE KERNEL then you can wipe"
But which kernels are safe?
Well i used philz' kernel 3.99 for my jplr8.ofcourse you shoulf find the kernel suitable for your device.if you look around in xda you will find the kernels uploaded by the philz himself
After you flashed the kernel you will see that your recovery changes to a more userfriendly interface.
Note:the philz kernel brings a touch based recovery.some might not be able to scroll using volume rocker.but it worked for me.anyway try to use the touch interface as it is more safe.
Backing up:
I suggest that you backup the following:
1.a nandroid backup using rom toolbox or recovery
2.your sms using go sms pro cloud backup
3.some apps that you know have important data, saved passwords or... and ofcourse go sms so that you will be able to restore the backed up sms.you already know that you should use titanium backup
4.write down your contacts.that was the way i did that but if you have a better way plz tell everyoneunder this topic.
5.your s memos and notes.i lost my s memos in the process
6.write down your app names or just place their apk somewhere you know.also you can use titanium backup too but i am a lazy guy
After flashing the rom using philz safe kernel wait for the phone to reboot.it will take about 3 to 10 minutes showing samsung logo but dont worry that is normal.
Now do the first setups and go walk through the ui.
For the first hours the ui will be having some lags and some bugs but that is ok.the rom is just getting to know your device and they are shaking hands
After some hours the ui is buttery smooth, the scrolling and menus are best and i am really pleased with the overall exp.
What you gain:
Apps:new camera, new gallery, update me and some hubs that did not work for me becaus im from iran (this is unfair)
Widgets:coolest widgets you cannot even imagine.for example how about a fully operational task manager for your homescreen?yeah, thats awesome.you can even close apps from the widget itself.epic win for me
Motions:some s3 and note2 motions like direct call and etc.
Special samsung features:smart stay and smart toggle, multi window apps with hack that you can loadup almost 90% of apps out there.s voice, airview in gallery and most of the places,a samsung service guy that buys breads for you every morning(fresh hot breads) and so
Also you are able to record calls in this rom
What you miss:
Your contacts, sms, apps but if you have backup dont worry:thumbup:
Apps:samsung apps(ah,who needed this one?i dont miss it anyways),social hub(honestly i miss this one,but you have facebook so dont worry) i cannot think of any other app,plz remind me if you do
Widgets:honestly i have what i want in widgets and i dont miss any
Motions:nothing
Special features:nothing
BENCHMARKS:
i did a benchmark right now withouy reboot overclock or anything(not even closing xda app or any tasks.nothing really)
Antutu:7500
I know thats low but im sure if you reboot and free up some ram and do it again it will be over 9000(without overclock)
Battery:im really pleased with the battery.it works for me better than stock rom and i have about 4 hours of screen on wifi usage.it does not drop just like the 4.0.4
Final words:if you want a great experience and battery you should try this rom.smooth fast and powerful.i cannot say anything else but im proud of the guys behind this rom and i appreciate their job
Forgive my bad english caus im iranian.and also this rom does not have persian or arabic language keyboard but does not mix up the words.so it means you can read well but you cant write.im sure you guys will have this problem solved for your roms as im gonna look around for a way.when i find out i will tell you
PLZ PLZ SPEND TIME AND TELL US YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE WITH THIS ROM SO THAT WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER

I tried to turn it off, but It wouldn't, it just went black for a few seconds and then came back in the same state. So I booted into cwm and chose for Turn power off.
This worked. So when I switched it back on a few seconds later, it went into boot animation and then froze....Turning off got me the same state as before, it smiled back at me with it's useless boot logo.
Repeated my earlier steps, same result.
Then I noticed with the device being shut down, pushing the home button didn't show up the battery state as it usually does. Neither did a quick touch of the powerbutton....
I didn't feel like to wipe and setup the phone again, so I plugged in the charger to see if that at least would function normally....
Plugging the phone in, without touching anything else made the phone come up in the middle of the boot animation, then it booted....
However I lost all account settings. Google account and email account info was completely wiped...
I entered those manually and all is working back.
So just a long story to share my experience, and maybe it might help someone someday finding himself in a similar situation...

He he.. I am a bit addicted
I'm still using this rom but there is two problems, one is s voice-wake up command does not work in lock screen and another one is bettary draining. I hardly use 2 hours on 3g network...how to solve this??

Facing sudden dead? Bootloop??? ( stuck on N7000 logo ).
Don't cry,
1st, reboot to recovery ( power + menu + vol up button )
2nd, make new Nandroid backup
3rd, nandroid done?? Restore the backup and boot system..
4rd, enjoy your "leaked" JB again..

please add to first post the known bugs, like when your os crashes (instability, flat battery, or you do battery pull) your device wont boot.
Fix: almighty safe kernel cache and dalvik cache wipe. Sometimes fix permissions is needed. If this doesnt work, do a nandroid backup, factory reset, nandroid restore and it could work(reported by others a couple times)
You can also suggest removing safe to uninstall system apps. That handshake your talking about is not 100% correct. More like 99, 9% You can increase free ram by removing these apps, and especially automatic test system app. This a leak with stuff on there that wont in final release That one will dramatically increase device gui performance after a reboot. lol.
all at own risk
