Freezing of Nexus S - Nexus S General

Am I the only one? Every Jelly Bean ROM has the same problem. Sometimes it freezes, and it won't do a thing, I can't even unlock it, it just sits there, black, I can only reboot it by pulling out the battery. It's so annoying. At least 4 times a day. How do I fix this? I tried PA, Stock JB, and now I'm on latest CM10 nightly, I wiped cache and dalvik every time before I flashed a new ROM.
I hope you can help me.

Even I have problem with JB , it hangs for 2 3 seconds n becomes normal. No need to pull the battery n all , it becomes normal by itself. Using stock 4.1

I had the same issue - except that I was in ICS stock...
got worse and worse in time - in the end I even couldn't use my keyboard anymore (whole lower part was unresponsive)
I testet it with some apps from the market which showed that the lower part of my screen didn't response to any inputs
solution was to take my nexus s to a repair center and they replaced the whole touch screen unit

Can you send me links of those apps? My touchscreen responds well but the problem is that the phone entirely hangs, and when I lock it, I can't unlock it anymore. It is I9023

Only cache and dalvik..?
That's not a clean install...
Do a clean install!

I had mine do that on the stock ICS .. It would also shut off and wouldn't charge or anything.. Had to pull the battery.. Dunno what was causing it to lag and go bonkers like that.. I never had any 3rd party apps installed.

that's the way it started on my phone as well
- sometimes it did not respond to slide to unlock (OUPS may I say slide to unlock or am i getting sued by apple now)
- some characters on the keyboard did not work or it randomly selected any character
- whole lower part of keyboard didn't work
and so on...
this one showed that the lower part did not respond to inputs...

Wipe data/factory reset before flashing a ROM. Stock launcher was also causing big freezes on early 4.1 builds. Have you tried with another launcher?

Yes I forgot to say I always wipe, of course. I use Nova launcher, not Trebuchet. Link to market didn't work

I think I fixed it. I deleted a MIUI folder on my SD card. Dunno what was it doing there, wipe didn't include it I guess. It took about 200mb of data from MIUI ICS to JB I had some time ago. It doesn't lag now.
I hope this helps someone.

Hope it works out for you .. I had to have my phone replaced something got spanked on my old one.. It was all stock..

happens to me countless times a day that im super annpyed by it to the point that i'm just used to it by now. whenever it happens though, i just shut my screen off, not look at it, wait 30~40 or so seconds til it gets back to normal

Most Jellybean ROMs run much better than any previous versions for me on my Nexus S 4G. I always wipe and format all relevant partitions. I also at one point wiped the internal/SD storage on my phone. I have seen a weird flicker then freeze happen on all JB Roms/kernels but only happens once a month if less. Currently running RASBEAN JELLY and Bedalus's Marimite 4.7 kernel. Maybe try different launchers? Also try running phone without doing Google Restore. Slowly add back apps to identify the prob. Don't get why so many are having these issues w JB

Serious lagging...... rooted/no custom ROM

Quick brief:
I am still on 2.1, but I am rooted.......but not using any custom ROM/kernels. I mainly wanted to root to rid of the bloatware. I am rooted, and have CW installed. I used RootExplorer to rid of the bloatware. I have one ongoing issue, and 2 getting progressively worse.
1) My battery has progressively started to wear down faster. I've had my phone over a year now, so I went ahead and purchased a new factory battery. I have properly cycled the battery as you should with a new one (kill it dead, let it charge fully.....did this a couple times). I have not noticed much more of an extended life with the new battery, over the original.
2) I have been using LauncherPro since I rooted. I understand a custom ROM would probably run a ton better, but I barely was able to root my phone successfully by myself.....so I am not sure I want to try flashing it. I really like the customizable features LauncherPro has. Recently though, the phone has gotten really laggy. I notice it most when using the text feature. I had Handcent installed, which I downloaded on the phone at day 1.....so I figured it was that app hanging up. I uninstalled it, and am using the default messaging service. Sometimes its fairly quick, but it still hangs up......even using the default. I also tried DL'ing a new Launcher, and tried Regina. It was lightning fast, but after a few hours....it wouldn't run properly. I assigned it to run as default, but after 3-4 hours.......it would prompt me on which launcher to use.......so I uninstalled it. Now I am still using the default TW launcher.
3) When I rooted, I deleted a few apps that are critical to run nav......like text to speech. I reinstalled them and got my nav working again.....but 90% of the time when I use nav......it takes the upwards of 10-15 minutes for it to find my location. Wtf? My phone is super hot by then too, so obviously my battery drops significantly.
Anyone help out with any sorts of resolution? Fwiw I don't have any apps running that I can see in task manager. I also have cache cleaner......so that is emptied regularly. When I started getting laggy, I installed the cache cleaner.....and it seemed to help alot. Then it got right back to as laggy as it was before......
I'm stumped.
Well, 2.2 came out a while ago and 2.3 is on its way. I say upgrade to 2.2 then to MIUI.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing it up.......sorry for the noobiness.
I have a friend that has flashed his Galaxy multiple times.....so I am going to get him to flash my Fascinate. I'll find the DL for that one, and show him.
Anyone else have any idea why I could be so laggy, so sudden? Also, I noticed lag when using PowerAmp as well.
Not a clue, haven't been on 2.1 in such a long time. 2.3.5 here. But usually doing a full wipe/reinstall solves any lag issues. As for the gps, well, it sucks tremendously on our fascinates. I suggest the MIUI rom and glitch kernel. I get great battery life, no lag, 10 sec gps lock, and so much more

Did you use Super-1-Click-Root to root your phone? It has a nasty side-effect of lagging up the phone post-root (at least in my, and others' experience)
Try turning off your phone, pulling out the battery for a minute, putting it back in and rebooting. That fixed mine.

Nope, I did it using one of the methods in the sticky in this forum. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I'd suggest following the steps to flash completely back to stock FIRST using pentafive's rom here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178544) and ODIN (your friend will know this if they've flashed a lot of phones). Do not use PST, it doesn't always work. Once you get fully back to stock, flash whatever new rom, radio, kernel, etc that you want (see here for a good list... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013312).
I was having a lot of force closes after rooting (manually via adb) and a flash back to stock using penta's ROM corrected them all. I then flashed on to a new ROM and have had zero problems so far.
maybe get 2.2 or 2.3 and get voodoo?
Update:
Haven't flashed a ROM yet, but I got bored and wanted to try some easy things. I popped the cover off and took the SD card out, and rebooted the phone. Fast as lightning on reboot, with the SD card out. I stuck the card back in......and it was fine. It went 3-4 days, then all of a sudden starting lagging again really bad. Mind you, before I just pulled the card out......I clear my cache, don't have any apps running besides the launcher and whatever app I am trying to run, and have also rebooted with/without removing the battery many times......to no avail. So after 3-4 days, when it got laggy again......I took the SD card out and rebooted, and its fast as lightning again.
Corrupt SD card possibly?

Anyone have a suggestion? This has happened many times now, it keeps repeating itself.
Phone starts lagging, removed SD card and reboot, fast as lightning. After 1-2 days, lagging again. Repeat.
If your SD was corrupted the phone would let you know, or things would start disappearing from the card.
This is the nightmare that we fassy owners have got to go through till we find the right Rom and tweak. Gingerbread has made this phone way better whether you use a TW or an Mtd Rom. Do some research and try one of them

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely not afraid to change ROM's, I'm just afraid to do it myself. I'll be doing it in the next week or two, a friend from work is going to flash it for me.
As for the laggy times though......I can't see how the card isn't the culprit. Every single time my phone gets laggy, when I pull the SD card it.....its lightning. A few times also, when the phone is starting to lag......I'll open my gallery and its usually all jumbled up, or it won't show me all of my pictures.
Maybe I need to reformat my SD card? Can I do that through my phone somehow?

ICS and screen freezing

Howdy,
I've had my tab for a very long time and have always had this issue where when under load the screen would stop responding to touch and I'd have to lock and unlock the device to get it functional again. It didn't matter if it was stock firmware or any of the various roms out there. It always does it. I was hoping that the ICS update would fix whatever the problem was but it does not seem to have done so. Is anyone else seeing this issue on ICS?
This has been an extremely frustrating issue with this device.
Thanks
I have never had any of the issue you described. Are you doing anything in particular that makes the tab freeze like this? So far the ICS custom Rom is just peachy for me. Faster and smoother than the HC versions.
Yes, I also have this problem. I have tried many different roms but problem is more or less the same with all of them (stock, cm9,cm10).
Today I have sent it to Samsung service center, let's hope they can fix it otherwise it goes in the trash.
I only noticed today, first day with official ics. Sometimes the screen is unresponsive, but after I press 2-3 times it works and it doesn't need to lock it.
Sent from my amazing 10.1 galaxy tab
I've has the same issue in starting in Jellybean, where a lock and unlock would fix it.
However, I've had moments where it stopped responding totally, while Android itself was still running fine, and I had to reboot to get it back up. That's happened to me everywhere.
Thanks for the replies. It's happening way more often for me on ICS than it did on HC. It used to happen once or twice a day but it happened 5 times last night. It's almost making the tab unusable. I've talked to a several people around here that have the same tablet and about half mention it happening so it's probably a common issue. As far as I know though no solution.
you can tell when it happens that it's not the os locked up. The volume buttons will show the the volume slider and holding down power will give you the shutdown menu. The screen is just not responding.
Please let me know if Samsung fixes it for you.

Okay, I'll let you know. I´m not very optimistic that they can fix it, but I had to do something. Yesterday I almost break the tab in half when it freeze all the time. After reboot it took about one minute before first lock up and then I had to lock/unlock and after another 30 seconds it freeze again and again and again......
So got pretty pissed and just sent it away.
Will probably take a few weeks to get it back.
Ever since I flashed custom HC and now stock rooted ics, all lag and freezing has disappeared. Before that it was extremely laggy and needed a reboot every day or two as it got extremely slow. And I'm running sslauncher which is generally not a smooth as some others. But now it just flies.
Sometimes a factory reset, wipe and restore of titanium backups helps a great deal.

Do you have the 10.1N? I had the exact same issue 2 days ago and I was about to throw the tab outside the window. There are some apps that did the freeze for me...only ones. If this will continue with the stock ics for 10.1N. .. I am going to send it to the service center. I never had such an issue with CM9 or custom roms. Maybe we should all report to Samsung instead of here. They might look into it.

I have the GT-P7500 and it doesn't matter what rom I have. My problem occur even after a factory reset and no apps installed so I doubt it´s any specific application that makes the freeze.

So, that is even worse than me. Good luck...but still I think we should send the complains towards Samsungs. How else would they know that there's a problem?
I've got the GT-P7510 as well. It's gotten really bad with Jellybean. I always figured it was the touch screen driver being the issue. I know there are ways you can cause it to happen by tweaking driver settings. I really was hoping that the update to the 3.x kernel would cause them to release a new driver and fix it but it looks like in some cases it makes the issues way worse.

[Q] Impacts of Rooting Nexus 7 - Stability

I'm new to the whole Android thing but I used to install lots of roms on my trusty old Windows Mobile devices over the years. I remember then that trying out different roms sometimes meant things would stop working.
Here's my problem. I have a Nexus 7 and it works fine on stock unrooted 4.1.2. I think. I've used the Nexus Root Toolkit to (very easily) unlock and root it. When rooted on stock rom (4.1.1 or 4.1.2), it takes a couple of seconds to turn on from sleep, sometimes needs to reboot, sometimes the gyroscope/acceslerometer locks and doesn't work as it should...
Is a rooted Nexus 7 less stable/reliable than an unrooted one?

Rooting doesn't make a difference on stability (or shouldn't)
All rooting does is give you admin rights to parts of the phone not accesible without rooted. Basically...
Customer ROM's for the Nexus at the moment (and sorry about this devs but its true) are not yet up to par with the Stock ROM.
Its stable pretty fast and not bad with battery.
Hope this helps.
Right so after lots of erratic behaviour with rooted stock 4.1.2, I unrooted and relocked the boot loader. It was better already but I've also run the Forever Gone thing and it's now working perfectly.
I would like to root again but not at the expense of stability. I had previously use the Toolkit if it makes any difference.

Rooting and/or unlocking the bootloader will have no direct effect on stability. What you do with your device after rooting is entirely a different issue.

This would be true if it weren't a Nexus device. We can more or less compile the same ROM that Google shipped. CyanogenMod 10 in my experience has been rock solid stable, though obviously there are still some bugs, I have encountered none. I also used EOS for a little, and that was equally great.

Nope.
IF you flash a non stock rom and/or kernel, then it depends on what you use. Read notes and user replies.
Sometimes I do get random shut downs when not in use, both while charging and not charging. I am not sure if that is a 4.1.2 issue or if it's tied to the rom I'm using. Have had it happen on two different roms.

Some apps are written to block rooted devices but there's no way the mere act of unlocking and rooting would affect overall stability.

After a day on stock rom I thought it was settled but no...
The battery drained down and after that it kept getting stuck at the Google Cross animation. I spent a while re-flashing stock rom and eventually it starts up. Sometimes. The accelerator issue remains but it is less frequent.
I contacted Google who put me on to Asus. They are going to send me an RMA number and we'll take it from there.
how do you revert or reset to a factory state???
I´m new with the nexus 7 so really have no clue
To reset your device, go to "settings", then "backup & reset", and finally "factory data reset".
The difficult in waking is something I went through with my N7. I found there is a bug with the auto-brightness setting. If I use the manual option I don't experience any problems.
I rooted my N7 the day I got it (had experience with SGS and Gnex) and haven't looked back. I haven't had any other issues than the "sleep of death".
Hope this helps.

If you mean stock non rooted, then the above will set you back to factory.
If you are rooted, that will not remove the root. You will need to flash a stock image to completely return to stock and then re-lock the bootloader.
I seem to have had more problems if the power runs down. I have turned off the auto brightness and I agree it's better in terms of starting up. I still have the issue with rotation not always working. Also, I notice it takes several seconds for the screen to come on when I press the power button. Is that normal?

Okay now it's getting weird. I got an RMA number and they are due to collect it tomorrow and fix it. Since I got the RMA number it has behaved perfectly. I did make a video of the problems but since making the video I've not been able to reproduce them. The battery is down to 14% now, will see what happens when it is fully drained. One major difference is the power button instantly switches the device on whereas it used to wait a few seconds.
Can hardware just fix itself like that? I'm concerned they'll get it and say they can't detect any problems and charge me for the shipping...
I'll keep on testing until morning but if you guys have any ideas please let me know.

I've used Wug's toolkit to return to compete stock. It will wipe everything. It's a two step process, you will still need to lock the boot loader. Go read the thread in the Android development section.

It's fine, even rooted so have cancelled the RMA. Hopefully it was just a short term fluke.
Several weeks on I have had no more repetition of these problems. I did have a line flicker occasionally before installing 4.2 but even that problem has gone away now. I just don't understand how the behaviour can be so unpredictable like it needed to settle into its new home or something.

Nexus S 4G Rom that doesn't crash every hour and lock up at boot screen?

I recently had to go back to my Nexus S 4G and I've been frustrated because it seems like every ROM I've tried has had issues with crashing at least once an hour if not more and often getting stuck at the bootscreen (google logo) when it resets.
I'm at the point where I'm beginning to wonder if its a hardware problem not a software one.
Try the new jelly shot v3.3 for a 4.2.2 rom.I'm running that and it doesn't lag or crash so far. Or for 4.1.2 try rasbeanjelly or cm10 stable or the last cm10 nightly

I did try rasbeanjelly and it had the same crashing. CM10 I never got very far because no matter how many times I wiped after I would boot it, the keyboard would just constantly force close.
I'll give the jelly shot one a try.
CM 9.1 is very stable and is a real sweet spot. Just keep the kernel that comes with it and you will be good to go. I use interactive governor and over clock to 1200.
For Cm 9.1 there are 2 different ones. One of them is bigger and then other smaller do you know which one I install?

Yes ... the larger of the two is the correct one.

Looks like a hardware issue to me...

Same exact thing is happening to me. Have tried cm10.1 and slim beam but both have the same issue. Very frustrating.
If you have tried multiple roms and are formatting boot, system, cache and data you may want to just backup the sdcard to a computer and format it too. Personally, my phone runs very stable on slimbean with marmite 8.5 bigmem. If you're hanging on the Google logo I would suspect an issue with one of the partitions though and format is about the only option for that. Just DON'T format wimax!

Is there anything specific i should know about reformatting? Will i lose root or will it affect unlocking the bootloader? Also there are lots of items to format: sdcard, system, cache, data, boot and wimax. Should I format all of them except for wimax as you mentioned?
Thanks again... will try when i get back home today.
last night i reformatted everything... boot, system, cache, data, etc. loaded cm10.1 thru adb. at first i thought this solved the issue... but nope. still having rebooting/google splash screen problems.
i think the problem has to do w/ when the phone comes in and out of sleep... the reboots only happen when the phone sleeps... in addition I have set the phone so that it doesnt sleep when its charging, and lo and behold, no reboots.
anyone have any idea what might be happening?

Does the N10 still have its problems?

I've heard the device will do things like restart randomly, and have some other misc issues - is that fixed with later releases of it or is it still an issue?
I never got any og those problems with my N10, maybe others do i dont know. Mine runs very well and the best tablet i have used

My N10 suffers from random reboots and memory leaks every couple days. But after flashing a 4.3 rom those problems almost dissapear with the updated Mali drivers from Samsung
So right now its a no issue, at least for me
Had screen flicker, but went away with the kit kat update (fingers still crossed).
Only had one reboot and that was on 4.3.

I've been using mine for almost over a week. It came with 4.2.x and asked for update to 4.3 right after unpacking. Never had a single problem for a week with 4.3 and now using 4.4 which i manually updated. Still had no problems.
No problems here too..
The reason that you maybe find much 'complains' is because people with a problem are searching for a fix. But hou never hear a word from people without problems.. Well until now
I really love this tablet. Fast and oh te screen.

On 4.3 I got
- screen flickering
- random reboots after heavy apps (like reading big sized PDF in acrobat)
After 4.4 I haven't seen those issues yet.

I've not had too many issues with my N10. I've mostly been running CM10.2 on it, but I've put KitKat on it now and it's purring like a happy cat.
Solid with 4.4 so far.
4.3 eliminated a number of the screen issues with the updated Mali drivers. Looks like they were updated further under 4.4 as the Google site shows new binaries for 4.4.
I'm running stock 4.4 and have 0 issues. Didn't with 4.3 either. Can't say for anything earlier, I'm newer to the device.
Still running 4.3 here, but mine reboots randomly a couple of times a week.
Waiting to see what 4.4 will do.

I had massive problems before, but it works like a charm since 4.4!

4.4 seems so far (over two days uptime with Chrome installed!) to have fixed the massive memory leaks on this device.. 4.3 never seemed to release memory correctly and SystemUI would bloat to 200MB and completely implode on itself. Now it seems memory is releasing fine, and SystemUI is fluctuating in memory usage like it should be now..
I was given an N10 for my bday back on Sept 30 and its gotten almost daily use. I can say with full confidence that I have experienced ZERO problems. No memory leaks (if its going on I cant tell...the performance is snappy as hell!) no light bleed and definitely no random reboots. I have thrown the most hardware intensive games at it and they all work better than I had hoped for. It does exactly what I want it to do when I want it to do it.
I've had it for about half a year and used daily and I've had one or two reboots during that time, quite long ago now, otherwise it's been perfectly smooth and had no issues.
The photo editor crashes while editing large images (probably runs out of memory), haven't tried it on 4.4. But that's really not a issue as I normally use Photoshop on my pc anyway.
So far I never had any other issues at all, no random reboots or anything else. 4.3 was running smoothly as is 4.4 which I have now. The only modifications I have made are rooting it so I can use certain apps, and I didn't even have to reroot after the 4.4 ota.
tldr: mine works like a charm.

Mine suffers extremely bad with memory leaks and random reboots when I have Location Services on. If I turn Location off, it doesn't reboot but after 30 hours or so, it slows to a complete crawl and redraws the launcher every 2 seconds thus making me have to manually reboot it. It's usable and I still use it every day, but I'm definitely not ecstatic with it and I'll likely replace it as soon as another tablet running stock Android and with a beautiful screen comes along. Hopefully I'm not waiting too long.
I get a reboot on average every 3 days. Usually while in the browser.. Screen will just flash white and reboots.. Never slows down before had.. No sign of trouble either..

I haven't had any reboots from the browser yet, but I did get a hard freeze while using the HBO app yesterday. That's actually new, never saw it before the update so hopefully it's just a one time thing.

I'm having problems with any rom later than 4.2. The 4.3 roms cause random reboots, and 4.4 will not install.... Something about some E: error.
I've gotten into the habit of wiping for factory reset before every flash.....so I have no idea why the problem with flashing the 4.4 roms. :silly:
