Just been thinking, I used to get MMS for the cost of 4 SMS on my old o2 UK contract.
This did not use the data plan which I had on my old Nokia N95, ..(them were the days lol).
So now im on T-Mobile UK who persist on saying you cannot send MMS like for like using more SMS, but they now actually get sent over the data plan.
So, I accepted this, but now I find i'm asking myself, "Why am I being charged twice in essence to send an MMS?"
Obviously, i'm using the same settings for data plan and MMS.
I think it's damn right cheeky of them, and I do hope i'm thinking logically here, as i'm thinking of taking them to task on it.
So, who's with me?
Just me then? Lol

Yeah, just you.
To the best of my knowledge, only O2 ever charged MMS messages against your SMS allowance but even they haven't offered that for quite a while now. And none of the networks allow you to send MMS for free if you have a data allowance.
So really, if you were to 'take them to task', you'd just be complaining to T-Mobile for offering the same service as everyone else, which seems rather futile IMO.
If you want to send pictures for free using your data allowance, there are plenty of alternatives to MMS like e-mail or third-party messaging services such as WhatsApp.
All i do is get a Voice plan and data plan... Some carriers charge for MMS and thats just BS imho!
Here in Venezuela Carriers charge for EVERYTHING! and 3G honestly sucks like you have no idea.. some areas have 3G.. and when you on 3G only last for like 10 minutes

So really I'm right in saying 'we're paying twice' to send an mms..I know its only a small issue but I for one think it is wrong...
Sidenote, I use whatsapp already but not all my contacts, but with 'apps' becoming more popular this will possibly become the preferred method and make mom's redundant or may already be redundant hence why they charge the small number of people who do use mms.

I am a bit worried about me using medianet on my cingular 8525. We have a family plan and 2 phones the other one is a sony ericsson. I ordered the sony ericsson so i could just sign up for the Medianet plan and after receiving the phones I immediately started using the cingular 8525. I was really encouraged of using wap.cingular/medianet because of reading that other people are getting away with it. I checked my online account this morning and it showed that the phone for my number is a cingular 8525. I called csr and informed her that i was using a sony ericsson(to cover up for the use of the 8525 and tethering) She said that it wasn't showing that in my account because the serial number of the 8525 is showing that its being used by my number. I was nervous that they knew what phone i was using that I might be caught but then i just asked her if it is not going to affect my account whatsoever just to end the call.
Did any of you have the same experience?
Should I stop my medianet plan(pda connect is expensive)?
What do you think the best thing to do is? what are my options?
thank you.

Calling in like that to ATT is what would raise a red flag...it show you are guilty about something. Personally I have been on MediaMax with an 8525 since January and this month I am over 1GB in data with a lot of tethering. They never say anything to me and I just upgraded a phone on one of my family talk lines so they obviously have seen my account.
Would it be helpful if I submit a different IMEI number?

My suggestion, if you are trying to "get away with something", then leave it alone. The more you pursue this and hassle AT&T, the more they will probably scrutinize your account. Wouldn't you think?
First of all, you are using Paying for Medianet.. and are USING medianet.. so AT&T can not say anything. You are using the service you PAY for. Regardless of device AT&T has no right to say anything to you. If they dont want PDA's accessing medianet then make them unable to access them. They just want more money and assume everyone is stupid. So don't even worry about it... you already pay for Medianet and you use WAP cingular settings, so they can not charge you any extra nor can they cancel your internet plan.

I agree...and I know a lot of really stupid people at my work that pay the PDA plan price. We get the same service and I have a cheaper bill that is the only difference.
I tried to use my sim in a black berry and the phone worked but I couldn't get on the internet. I asked why and was told my account doesn't have a PDA data plan but I do have a media net bundle and with my 8525 can use the internet with unlimited access..
Is it true the PDA data plan is for phones like blackberry's and not WM5 phones?
I to only pay $19 a month for unlimited..
On AT&T's site, within the Help resources for 8525, they provide the steps to set up WAP on your device, and an alternative if you are unable to transmit emails. Based on this, one would assume they are aware MediaNet is being used this way.
I agree though, don't make a big deal out of it. The results may not be what you had in mind for, as is well known, no good deed goes unpunished.
AT&T actually did offer the Medianet plan for the 8525 for a BRIEF period of time. We were told that our PDA plan would also include text messaging, but it did not. When we discovered the error and asked what happened, they said that our plan didn't switch to include texting. I then said I want to switch to MediaNet which they did no problem.
On a separate note, my pop3 yahoo account doesn't work anymore. Not sure if it's my account settings or medianet - any ideas?
Interesting thread on MediaNet and tethering here.

Don't worry, i been using MediaNet for at least 6 months on my 8525. It was originially for w810i, and i brought the 8525 off of ebay. My account does show 8525 currently that im using. But im using MediaNet with no troubles at all. You paying for the services, so there nothin to be scared.
I had a sony ericson P800 and was using my new 8125 and it showed I was using my t68i that I had not used for months.
Here are the new rate Plans

I'm using the MediaNet about a year on a 8125, then X01HT (8525), everythikng great, last time I call they even upgrade my plan and give 200 text messages for free.

My MediaNet and SMS are separate. With the textwhore teenage son of mine, we have the unlimited family SMS plan - covers all phones. Very much worth the $30/mo. for the 5 phones on my plan.
hey guys starting the 20 of this month most data plans will be changed... lots of things are happening and the worst part is now the customer will be held liable for data used under the wrong plan so for all the people i have helped over the past couple and the people on the media max plan months PLEASE PM me so i can change things for you come the 20th. i just found out about these changes today and also you will no longer be able to add medianet unlimited or mediamax plans with a PDA IMEI... again if you have a mediamax plan you will be held liable for any and all data usage on a "wrong feature" if you have the 39.99 pda plan or any media max plan PM on or after the 20th so i can make sure that you dont get screwed over by the company... also while im at it please do not PM because you went over on something and need credit on your account.. please just PM me if you need me to make changes to your account also if your going to PM me the things i need right off the bat are
PHONE NUMBER!!!!!
the name of the account
and the last four of the social..
... im not very active on the board but i always try to reply to my PM's...
Umm, What?
Do you work for att or something. How you going to make changes to my account? Does this affect plans that have been grandfathered over from cingular? I would expect some sort of message from ATT before i got charged ANYTHING extra. i already pay 79.95 a month. If i get screwed there will be hell to pay for ATT.
Ummm
Anybody that posts private info here should be shot. Call AT&T...

n00bs! Use the search bar!
Yeah he does. He changed plans around for people here so that they could use the 19.99 MEdiaMax plan on their 8525. Pretty nice of him, made it easy for those who wished to do so. I did it by myself on the internet site and I had it for close to a year...actually I just cancelled it and installed nodata so that I could save a few pennies (financial situations...)
Anyway, you're fine. If you have the correct plan for your phone then no worries...it's for us that gave the fist to AT&T and paid for a cell phone data plan on a PDA.
@Gynga...
Man that sucks! I've heard about the IMEI sweeps before but I never had a problem. All the people that did get caught just played naive and got credited back... Looks like you've got some work to do!
The good news I think is that some of the plans went down by 5 bucks or so...
I guess when I go back to using cell data I've got to get the official plan.... bummer...
Why can't you just **cough**change your IMEI to an old broken phone you have laying around**cough**?

More power to you broth'a. AT&T has just swallowed up my hometown wireless carrier Edge Wireless, and i am totally not looking forward to their grip on data and squeezing us customers for every fraction of change they can get

thanks for the support on the matter and yes data plans are droppi9ng the new PDA unlimited will be 30 but have no messaging andif you do want messaging its now 5 bux more than it was before... also the 5mb of data will be taken away so starting on the 20th it will be 1500 messages for 15 bux.. in my opinion the customer is getting screwed over on this one. i think that the changes were made to stop reps from flipping features there have been alot of internal changes to stop the flipping going on everywhere it sucks cuz i can still be flipped and get chargebacks but if i flip i dont get paid... oh well al good things must come to an end... to be fair if the people i helped out wanna make the changes come the 20th they will have first priority... but everyone that PM's me will get helped....

Okay what about the Unlimited smartphone would we have problems with that? I just want to make sure I don't spend an extra $20 if I don't have to.
When I got my MDA I went to a Kiosk where a friend works and he added MediaMax + Unlimited M2M txt for for a certain amount. That Kiosk is no longer there but the plan was added by an ATT Employee and not by me online, will my plan still change on the 20th? If so I'll have an MDA and an 8525 for sale shortly. I'll get out of the PDA phone market completely and buy a Shine or some other trendy slide phone.
Ok i have a question. The screen the at&t people use at the store and when I call in show me having my old samsung d807. I had the unlimited data $20 plan on that phone. I bought my 8525 out right about 8 months ago and have been using it ever since and the at&t people still see my d807. So are you saying soon they will see my 8525? i switch back and forth between the 2 phones every week. I use the d807 if Im going out for a night of hard partying and usally keep the sim in till the battery dies. How will at&t know which phone Im using if they dont know right now?
So if I am reading this right, this will only affect people that are on any of the Media Bundle plans not the people that are on the PDA plans?
Is this correct?
Gary
I think I was misunderstood... Say I have an old broken RAZR, If I were to CHANGE the IMEI on my 8525 to the one from my RAZR, would AT&T still know which phone I was using?

Att has a database of most (if not all) the IMEIs they have sold in stores/online. This can be confirmed by checking your online account. Anytime I change my sim into an ATT branded phone, it automatically updates on the account. The good news is that they can't tell foreign identifier, like my HTC TyTN, so as far as they are concerned - I have a razr. Their data plans are still absurd. The fact that the 3G network does not support video calls is also absurd. They milk the ignorant consumers for any $ they can. Go figure.

I work for AT&T too. The 3G network does support video calls but you need the right phone to do it. I'm pretty sure the sync, a737, and the slim can do it. But of course, you have too add it onto your plan. From what I've been told, WM6 was suppose to let us do video calls also, but I haven't seen it yet.
And Gyngabread Man, my hat is off to you, way to tap the feature market!

Thanks
I bought a PDA unlimited plan for 39.99, AT&T charged me but didn't put me on the plan, then sends me a bill for $1700 for one month of using the 8525 on the medianet plan! After initialy saying they can't do anything about it, when I screamed and shouted at them, they finally cancelled the charges.
Then the same problem happened the next month!
I'm now living in dread of the third bill.

I don't think you're right there - I bought a 3125 when I switched to AT&T - the only phone "they know" I have. However, everytime I switch the sim to my HTC TyTN (Not the 8525 - the TyTN) it automatically updates and reads I have an 8525 - it's strange though - it almost never updates the otherway - I can have the sim in the 3125 for a week and my online account will still read I'm using an 8525 - I think there system is designed to show you using the phone which has the greatest possible data consumption possible so they can bilk you on plans or something

Hey Telus users,
I'm sure you all know about the recent addition of the 15 cent incoming SMS charge. I'd like to know if anyone has called Customer service to cancel?
Does this change give us the option to bail on our contract early (for free) because of a change in terms?
I wish they would open up Canada to use American providers.
Any thoughts?
Tough luck, they've already publicly stated that they will not be freeing anyone.
That said, they've been doing this for months already on many accounts. Best bet is to complain to customer service... they'll probably offer a free unlimited text message add-on.
If enough people complain... I think you'll see Bell/Telus back off and forget the whole stupid idea.

Bell has clearly stated (I can't speak for Telus - but I believe it is the same deal), that if you sub to ANY plan that includes text messaging, you will not be charged for these incoming messages. This charge was put in place for those that do not have any text messaging as part of their plan.

Yes, absolutely they will. However, for those who did not wish to incur the extra cost of a text messaging add-on or plan... there's nothing to do but complain.
Think about it this way. Let's say some fool friend of yours gets the bright idea to text you the first 10 books of the bible... not only is your phone going to sound like a busy highway, but it's also going to cost you some extra $$$. To prevent this, you have two choices: Turn off text messaging features, or subscribe to a package including text messages. Are you supposed to take responsibility for any unsolicited messages?
I've already experienced this situation. A short while ago, an idiot I know decided it would be funny to send my phone number to some crank-calling service online. I never did get the call, but I started getting spam text messages, at a rate of about 10 an hour. Telus started charging me $0.15ea from the very first one. After 2 weeks, I got the bill. Do the math.
Paying for incoming messages is not like paying for incoming phone calls. With a call you have a choice. You can choose not to answer, or hang up when you feel the call is too long. Caller ID is a low-cost feature on many plans that will help with this. With a text message, you do not have any option other than turning the feature off entirely. There's no way to weed out or prevent unwanted messages.
I've gotten over $100 worth of extras from them because I've complained about it... including the easiest one: free text messages added to my plan.

I've been paying for data ($15) and a $30 package. I've complained about the flaws with the Touch, misinformation from Telus service/sales/tech, this SMS issue, and more... IF you are willing to spend the time on the phone (mostly on hold), and make repeat calls, they'll slowly give more and more features. It all has to do with your complaining skills and the only way to improve them is to use them.
I've gotten:
-Free voicemail (for length of contract)
-1/2 price billing for six months (yet to be put in effect )
-The Touch Diamond as soon as it is available. No charge, no extended contract.
-Free TXT addon (for length of contract)
-Extra 50 daytime minutes twice, for 100. (for length of contract)
-100 Canadian Long Distance Minutes (for length of contract)
-Well over $100 in credits for incoming txt's, incorrect charges, etc.
I've only been a client for 8 months.

Yep, I have called Bell and complained about numerous things over the few years I've been with them. Let's put it this way, I get:
Call waiting, voice mail, unlimited Internet (including ALL data transfer), 3 way calling, calls between the 2 phones completely free anytime, unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 6, 250 text messages and 250 daytime minutes.
All this on TWO phones for $64.40 a month.
Trust me, I complained a bit. I don't know of anywhere else where you would get that kind of deal for two phones.

Incoming BS at $$$$
They just nickel and dime us. Then the rate goes up.
The entire system is digital.
What the heck then charge for call display?
Voice mail I can see, it takes up data space.
Text and voice can both be compressed. These monkeys are just ripping us off.
I am with bell and they screwed me hardcore but after a week of calling i got some some compensation for it. First i bought the htc 5800 phone as i loved the whole sliding qwerty keyboard. I asked for unlimited internet, unlimited text, msn, and then a basic voice plan as i barely talk on my phone. They told me they would have to add a minium of $25 for a data plan onto my $20 voice plan for the extra features that i asked for and i was fine with that as they told i would get what i requested. Everything was all dandy until i got my first bill $698.89. Apparently the 5800 doesnt support unlimited internet so i got nailed with data charges. No one told me this.
After calling bell for a week i was able to get a free htc touch, unlimited data, msn, text messaging, voicemail, free calling after 6pm and weekends, and free incoming calls for $60 a month. which is alot better than the close to $100 it would have costed me if i didnt complain that they screwed me over. It just makes u wonder how much money they get when they screw people over and they dont complain about it.
Please respond here if you are using the portable wifi feature of your nexus one and getting any SMS or e-mail notification from AT&T that they want you to pay for tethering.
I hear stories about people who get the "unlimited" data plan and then straight up abuse it (by providing internet for their entire household), which is probably why this is happening.
150+GB a month is what I consider abuse btw.
I don't see why you should pay for tethering. I think its just another way for them to make more money. Maybe for some people they don't wanna pay to have a separate internet source when they can use their phones as their internet source. I don't tether since atm I don't have unlimited data lol.

Should be free and only pay for data...just another reason why I left at$t years ago!
I have T-Mobile and as of right now my "unlimited" is still unlimited but once you exceed 5GB for the month is DRAMATICALLY slows down.
I just moved in to a new place with my wife and son and I'm trying to cut down on extra bills (I'm the only working parent right now) so I don't have internet, I just tether off my phone.
I just exceeded 5GB for the first time ever and its horrible. I'm moving so slow, on my phone that is, its unreal.

Check this work around info for some possible help:

The only people getting flagged are iPhone accounts that are extreme abusers.
If you are abusing the service that much, then you should be paying for the higher package IMO.
I tether on my unlimited plan and have never had a problem, but I also don't abuse it. I barely break 1gb a month.

Because iOS's silly separate tethering config makes it easy to know exactly how much it's getting used. Not so simple on phones that route tethered data through the normal APN.
Yeah, I use tethering on my N1 on AT&T everyday and I haven't gotten anything from them yet. I don't abuse it, but where my house is, sort of in the woods (in Pennsylvania) where I can't get anything better than dial-up, so I use it just for basic email, Facebook, etc.
3UK now offer "all you can eat" data on Pay as you go. i plan to swap my T-Mobile SIM to my old 3 after this contract is up, i really hope the plan is still available then as i can see this being abused from day one!!
I tether my tablet to my phone almost daily, but it's pretty small usage. I am only using 300-400 megs a month on 3G now since AT&T took my unlimited away when they screwed with my account a while back. I mostly update or do stuff on wifi at home.

They don't allow tethering on PAYG. Same as Giffgaff, unlimited data without FUP, but no tethering.
I got a similar message from Cincinnati Bell Wireless, but they have not charged me. I don't really use tethering all that much.

Ah! cheers for that info
Doesn't mean they'll ever notice you doing it, of course
XDA is no longer worth my time.
What I am having trouble understanding is what evidence is at&t Mobility using to determine if one is tethering or not.
They have a few choices, but as far as I can tell, none of them are perfect and all will have false positives.

So with the recent changes to AT&T's unlimited data plan of increasing it $5 but upping the throttling cap from 5gig to 22gig, I am no longer concerned with Data usage. And on my current plan I pay an added $20 dollars a month for unlimited messaging. I desperately want to drop-kick that add-on and save myself some cash. However in order to do that I need a SMS app that uses data instead of voice. Does anyone know a good app for SMS over data? And I DO NOT want a app like WhatsApp or KiK where the second party also needs the app. That is frivolous and a nuisance and is not always practical. I know there is Textfree but it shows up as another number than your actual cellular number. Surely I must be missing something since I am not having luck finding one. And money is no concern. Thanks.
I think google hangouts was eventually going to do this like they have done with voice calls, but right now other than having both people use the same app like Telegram or whatever it's not possible to the best of my knowledge.
Get a Blackberry, the only way to go longterm
