possible brick - please help! - HD2 General

I was running froyo off my SD card and was wanting to go with a NAND install. I was following steps in a HOW TO here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939682
I had 3.14 installed, but my SPL was 2.10 (not 3.03 noted in the How To) so I didn't think i needed to change my ROM. I installed SPL-2.08.HSPL (and confirmed that it installed - all was fine) and then read further that android may not run right if I'm running 3.14. This may or may be true and I cant go back and find where I read that, but thats beside the point now.
SO, I download 1.66 as it instructs in the HOW TO, install it and it looks like it installed fine, but my phone shuts off and Windows 7 tries to install the driver and cannot find it. I try to reboot my phone and its dead/blank.... nothing. I'm pretty sure its bricked as its non-responsive to any button mashing and battery removal. I cant reinstall 3.14 since Win7 wont recognize the phone (no driver). What do I do? Thanks very much for any help!
FYI, I'm with t-mobile USA. Let me know if you need any more info. Thank you in advance!!

Yep, dead. 1.66 rom contains a ..51.. radio.
Sadly, you didn't need to do any of that, simply switching spl from 2.10.0000 to 2.08.hspl using hspl3 would have done the trick.
(For info, the tmous does NOT require spl 3.03 to run 3.14 roms, unlike the regular hd2 which is hugely unstable on 3.14 without spl 3.03, which is why its not uncommon to see tmous phones running fine with 3.14 and spl 2.x, )

So WHY is it in that Definite Guide?? Arg!
There is nothing I can do? Is it basically a very expensive paper weight now?

JTAG / new mainboard are the only options now.

Contact me and I can put you in touch with someone that can JTAG your HD2.
Also I thonk what you read about Android not running good if you have the 3.14 ROM was concerning SD card builds cause if you flash to a NAND Android ROM Wimdows Mobile is not on the HD3 anymore at all.
The guide is really good but that part should not have been put in there as HSPL 4 supports SPL 3.03.0000. Which SPL 3.03.0000 is the reason HSPL 4 was made.

Probably just an older guide then... live and learn i guess. I located the JTAG guy from another post. Seems like the best option. Thanks!

whats a JTAG?

JTAG is a means of having a direct connection to the processor and NAND chip on the main board. It os,the only way to reserect a truly bricked HD2. A truly bricked HD2 will not even turn on or allow you any kind of access to the device via USB port. The JATAG is used allong with a Riffbox, ORT, cables to connect the ORT to the Riffbox, a power suply if you do not use the battery to power the main board while JTAGing it,and special software for your computer to reserect the SPL of bootloader so uou can once again reload software onto the device. You have to take the main board out of the HD2 to do thos though so it is not for everyone.

Hi
Step 1: Right click on SSPL and "run as administrator" it will be do the job.
If you get an error then Disconnect the cable and reconnect then run the Step 1 again.
Good luck

If you use a USB Hub then try use the usb port from the motherboard.
OR
Try to Install HSPL first. then Install any roms with Custom ruu. Please read the thread before you use them. They all explained here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
Good luck
1) To install this HSPL there must be SPL 1.42.0000 on your device.
Otherwise the installation will fail!
To check your SPL version, hold the Volume Down button and do a reset.
It is possible to downgrade to this SPL, by just flashing to an Official ROM
with this SPL version.

For instance my is SPL 1.42.6666 and I have same problem.
Troubleshooting:
* I have SPL 1.42.666 on the device.... !!!! WAIT !!!! SPL 1.42.6666 is not the version of the SPL on your device!... it is the SSPL version. Most likely you have the needed 1.42.0000 SPL on the device, just try to install this HSPL if you need it. Don't worry, if there is not the right SPL on the device, then u will get an error message, but nothing will happen to your device

I had same kind of problem, I also run windows 7 I simply swaped to a different usb plug and then it worked fine. I was useing the plugs on the frount of pc's case so I wonder if the internal cable has a small problem or somthing as all other things work fine from that plug.
Hope that may help you.
Imanaged to get HSPL on my device and I manged to flash the rom to this one " Touch-IT Black Leo HD2 - updated " and it seems really good, the question I would like to ask now is how do I put the original rom back should I need to for warrenty issues? also does this mean that I can now use all the other roms that are on here? and is there a rom that anyone would highly recomend? Thanks for all the help that has been given to me, this really is a great forum with really helpful people...

Wel done
If you want to uninstall the HSPL then follow this
Uninstallation
Only way to remove the HSPL is to flash an original SPL from SD card.
- Take any "RUU_signed.nbh" from a ship ROM and copy it to SD card.
- Rename it to "leoimg.nbh"
- Reset the device while pressing the volume down button.
Recommend any roms is not easy because it depends your usage pattern. Therefore read more in the LEO threads before you choose to download any rom.
Now you have HSPL therefore you can install any rom from here
Good luck
ALWAYS USE SEARCH FUNCTION HERE AND YOU WILL FIND ANSWERS.
Thank you for explaining everything in a way that I can understand, I am not very techy so understanding exactly what to do when written is very important so thanks again..

If this helped you out of SPL 2.02 please remember to thank these guys for working this out.
Info about MFG SPL:
Why can't I change the SPL with these test ROMs?
- These stock ROMs have an MFG SPL which cannot be overwritten in any way, not by flashing stock ROMs from SD, HSPL utility, SSPL or goldcard. The only successful way has been to drop the SPL with mtty (and has only been done once or twice).
- Good new is you can still use your HD2 and switch between 2.02 and 2.03 test ROMs..
What is an MFG SPL?
- MFG SPL = Engineering SPL

this happened to several people some months ago.
goldcard may work, yes, but if not then sspl should get you flashing roms, but you can't change radio with sspl.
look for thread started by xmoo around february or march.
I thought I had tried sspl.. could I have done it wrong?
I found it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606713
I put the shipped 2.13 (also tried 2.05, 2.07, 2.09, 2.10, 2.11 stock and test roms) rom nbh from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655653 in a folder with the SSPL.exe and then run .exe but the progress bar stays at 0%
I also tried creating a goldcard, but not quite sure how it works. do I put an nbh on the card with it and boot from sd? or use CustomRUU?
The only ones I can flash back and forth are 2.02 and 2.03 test roms. I'm so annoyed!
Thanks
Nevermind the device wont even turn on anymore
2.02 is a MFG SPL.
Engeniering SPL. You have to drop it using mtty (but if you do it the wrong way, you may brick ur phone!)
Someone flashed 2.10.0 with sspl and sent it back for warrenty. When it came back it had 2.13 with SPL 2.10 on it....

Well for some reason I tried flashing to the 1.01 test from the 1.03 to see if it would change from the MFG spl and I wasn't really paying attention to the progress bar but when I looked back it said (on PC) "ROM Update sucessful" but the phone didn't boot and won't even charge now?
What happened? and can I still send it in for warrenty?
Thanks for the help!

I am badly looknig for an MFG SPL.
Can someone point me where this is located pls? thanks!
Sry. please ignore my questions, I asked too fast...
Even MTTY does not remove the SPL 2.02.0000
Any solution for this yet? The test ROMs 201 to 209 are not intended for the TMOUS devices there for it is making it hard to remove the watermarked SPL.
I recontructed the ROM without the watermark but it will not install on the device. Anyone has an idea of how to remove the watermark? The SPL used form that ROM is the cause of the block...
Anymore thoughts on this issue?
I bought an eBay "for parts only" HD2 that the seller said sometimes booted into windows 6.5 but most of the time froze at the stick-together screen and never fully booted. Sounded maybe fixable to me, so I took a chance on it. I've never seen it try to boot into winmo 6.5 and when I check the bootloader info I see this:
PB81120 SS-B3
SPL-2.02.0000 XE
MicroP(LED) 0x05
MicroP(Touch) 0x50
The SPL-2.02.0000 was how I found this page. I've read many other pages about HSPL3 etc., but this phone is not recognized at all by two different WinXP machines w/ActiveSync. I don't get any messages regarding Qualcomm or anything like that. It's as if it isn't plugged in except the charge light does go on.
The only thing I can do is flash from the MicroSD card. But, haven't found any other ROMS other than the one that is on it already, that will actually flash. The others get stuck at a white screen that says Loading... and it just hangs there.
When the phone powers up it shows:
R 2.06.50.23......3 (the ...... is actually a squiggly looking line, not actually dots)
G 15.30.50.07u
D 2.03.75592 8G
then it just hangs there forever and goes into what looks like a screensaver mode (parts of the screen get darker and the stick together moves around as well).
If it's dead/bricked, what part inside would need replacing to get it running again (i.e. the motherboard)? This phone looks brand new. It's it fantastic condition. I've seen terrible looking HD2s on eBay that still work. So, I'm curious if there is something I could take out of an ugly phone and swap into this pristine HD2 and have it work.
As I see it, my only other options are to contact HTC and find out what they charge to repair it, or sell it for parts - again.
Since last post have discovered if I manually put phone into bootloader mode then plug it in via USB to my PC I hear the confirmation from the PC that the device is plugged in. Activesync does not fire up, but bootloader changes from serial mode to USB mode. I can start the ROM update utility, the black htc screen with 0% shows on the phone but eventually times out with an error [262] that the recovery process doesn't fix.

The person who owned that previously probably did the same thing I did and flashed one of the test roms with MFG SPL (2.02 or 2.03) Just don't try to flash 2.01, it'll most likely brick it. tomorrow the unbricking attempt on my device will begin.. but I guess you have to drop the SPL using mtty. talk to xmoo
I'll be very interested to read how your unbrick attempt turns out. I tried the MTTY instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668347
But, that post starts out saying "Before you start one note, this method only works if you succesfully flashed HSPL", which of course my HD2 does not have. Mine used to have 2.02.0000, but after many different tries at a fix - now has 2.00.1000. This is no better a situation to be in as it never gets past the "stick together" screen either.
I tried the create a goldcard.img info found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591314
However, the directions for QMAT are outdated. But, I did download the new PSAS software offered at the site linked to in the above post and believe I got my 1GB MicroSD card's serial number but when I tried to "generate HTC goldcard" for Leo it gives a message that says "Goldcard for newer devices isn't implemented in this unregistered version" and it looks like it cost 30Euros to register. I'd pay if I knew for a fact this was going to work. But, I have my doubts because in step 2 you need to change the security permissions policies on the HD2. I have no access to the registry since there is no activesync connection possible at this point and I can't launch any programs like PHM.
The fix (if there is one even possible) has to come completely from the SD card as far as I can tell.
Good luck with yours! I hope something works and you come back here and post the sequence.

that part is only necessary to find the ID No. of the sd card. If you can get access to a working WM phone for a few minutes, you can use the other device to find the ID No.
There are alternate ways to get the ID, such as a linux boot disk on a laptop that has a built in SD card slot, but the slot must be directly mounted on the computers PCI bus, if it runs through a usb header it will give you the ID of teh USB header and not the card.
I'm trying to find a way for HSPL3.exe to disable the SPL version check.
This way you can directly flash other HSPL versions....

Knowledge is power my friend and d answers u seek are but a click away...All u have 2 do is read, read n do more reading...follow all instructions written by devs to d letter as they were written for a reason...Wat reason?...
Avoiding errors or turning your beloved HD2 into an "Expensive Paper-Weight"....Getting android onto ur device is quite easy, u just have 2 put in d time 2 understand certain terms n how d needed softwares work...So summary?...Start reading from here. When u have properly familiarized urself with flashing then visit the HD2 android development section n check out several builds available...u must make a choice urself as we wouldn't know wat u lyk...so feel free 2 test as many as u can.
P.S. Its crucial u first perform a HSPL (2.08 HSPL) on ur fone before doing ANYTHING else.
The post above isn't really helpful. He's obviously read a lot already lol.
I know getting in to flashing and stuff on the HD2 is very confusing at the start, but once you learn it once you learn it forever.
Basically first off, you need to flash HSPL 2.08 to your phone. To do so download 'HSPL4' from these forums and flash that. Just search for it and you'll find it. It'll have instructions on how to install it on the thread which is very easy.
Just boot to SPL and connect to USB and run the .exe file inside of HSPL4 and choose 2.08.HSPL from the drop down menu.
After this you need to flash the newest radio which is 2.15.50.14. There's a sticky in all the HD2 development threads that have all the radio's. Just look in the WinMo or Android section and it'll be stickied. You basically then open the file you downloaded with the radio in it, boot to HSPL (you've just flashed HSPL over SPL) and run the RomUpdateUtility and just click on all the next and update buttons on the window that'll pop up and it will install. Obviously you need your USB cable plugged in for this too.
After that, you need to flash MAGLDR. I can't get links at the moment but you should easily be able to get a link to the MAGLDR thread and download it. After you've downloaded it to your PC, it's basically the exact same procedure as flashing a radio. Bootloader > USB connected to phone > open RomUpdateUtilty and follow instructions and flash. After this finishes installing you're basically done and all you need to do is flash your Android ROM. Just go in to the NAND Development section and chose a ROM to start from.
Another option is to flash Clockworkmod Recovery after MAGLDR.
You simply flash that by going in to MAGLDR (keep holding power/end key while phone is booting) and go to USB Flasher using your volume buttons then going in to it by the call button. Then opening the .DAF file on your PC and following the instructions and clicking next. Obviously again with your USB cable plugged in too. This is how you flash ROM's/Clockwork.
Any other problems I'd be more than happy to help with.
Just to mention too - the HD2 is very difficult to brick so don't worry about bricking your phone as I don't think there's actually a way to do it other than flashing the wrong radio if you have a TMoUS HD2 and you flash a .51 radio which you won't do as I've told you the correct radio to flash.
from the info he posted about his phone, it seems it already has the latest radio installed (2.15.50.14) I'm guessing that he's got a phone from somewhere in EU since the TMOUS came with the 2.08.50 radio, unless I'm mistaken, and there are some later models of the US hd2 that have the 2.15 radio, but anyways if the info is correct then he doesn't need to worry about the radio, he needs :

Woops my bad, didn't even read the OP info part. Well done for posting the links though as I can't at the moment.
Also about clockwork, make sure the you have the right clockwork partition for the ROM or else you'll get stuck on a boot-loop. You'll usually find the partition info in the ROM thread and then you just edit the flash.cfg file found in your clockwork folder using notepad.

Sometime wrong radio can cause that issue.
Make sure that the radio is 2.15.xxx.xxx.
Now, you should go into bootloader and try to flash the radio, and then restart doing task 29, flashing MAGLDR.
If you succeed, your phone will automatically bring you into MAGLDR screen.
From there you can flash Android or WP7
Good luck
I now downloaded my "old" radio version 2.15.50.14
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787
It seems to complete.. didnt jump from 0% to 100% in 1 sec..... so thats good
Then the task29 seems to work as well since my ROM is clean!!
BUT agian when I romupdate MGLDR it start and complete very fast... goes from 0 to 100% within a few sec...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893618
and agian stops at the HTC startup screen.....
As extra information I can say that when I try to install MGLDR the RomUpdate state that the current image version is... blank
and that I can install Image Version 2.00.000.0
And then when I start it takes a few sec.....
What OS do you use on your PC? If it's Vista/Windows 7, you may need to run as administrator, if you haven't done so already
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I'm using WinXP as OS
I'm using WindowsXP as OS.
I have not had any problem using the programs so far.. so I guess I have all the right rights!
UPDATE:
Can it be a problem with the SD card if there are no connection or a defect card?
I get exactly the same behavior if I remove the SD card from the phone!

[Q] Help Upgrading My Rom

Can anyone help me please... I'm trying to upgrade the rom to the latest HTC HD2 rom for O2. I connect the phone via USB, sync it and then run the RUU program from HTCs website. The phone starts the process and boots the phone to the 4 colour screen and then to the black HTC progress screen and then it hangs on 0% for a few minutes until the utility finally tells me its lost connection with the phone (Error 262). I've done soft resets and hard resets. Disabled firewalls. Tried on another machine. Even ran the utility under XP SP3 compatibility. Still no joy. Can anyone help?? Thanks
Sounds like you might have a bad USB cable or that you are having timing out problems. First forget about the ActiveSync. All ActiveSynce does is help insure hour HD2 is ready to be flash by checking the battery level and such. Power your HD2 on but hold the volume down button down while powering on. When you see the tri color bootloader screen connect hour USB cable and wait for the Serial in the white bar of bootloader to change to USB and then right click the RUU of the ROM and select run as administrator. If this still does not work I would try another USB cable.

Thanks for this... i followed your instruction and used 2 different cables. No joy.
Anything else I can try that doesn't involved the device suffering a sudden impact with the nearest wall??
Cheers
could it have anything to do with the phone being locked to O2... its the latest ROM for O2 that I'm trying to install.

hmm....if you are trying to flash stock rom which is not intended for your device, you need HSPL or Gold card.
There are threads in Windows Mobile 6.5 section that will guide you on installing HSPL or making a Gold Card.
Good luck

Well here's the thing, my phone is locked to O2. I'm trying to install the latest ROM from HTCs website for O2 customers. For the life of me I cant get it to install. I did install HSPL a few months ago when I tried to run Android from the SD card. That didnt work either. Like I say, I've done a hard reset. Could the HSPL thing be causing an issue. How do I get rid of it.
I hate being a noob sometimes!!

To get rid of HSPL you just have to run the HSPL Utility avain and choose the correct SPL version for your ROM when it asks what version you want to flash. Remember HSPL has the stock SPL versions to, click on the link in my sig to download HSPL 4. Hint thecstock SPL versions all have four zeros at fhe end and the HSPL version do not.
You said you are getting error 262, this usually means you don't have the right SPL or HSPL one of the two atleast that is if I remember correctly. What ROM are you trying to flash and what does it say in bootloader right now?

Hi... Been away so only just got this reply.
The rom I'm trying to install is a stock rom update from the HTC website:
O2 (UK): 3.14.206.1
For the record, my phone is an O2 phone.
As for Bootloader? It currently says:
PB81100 HX-BC
SPL-2.08.0000 8G XE
MicroP(LED) 0x05
MicroP(TOUCH) 0x40
Hope that helps. Really bugging the arse off me this is.
get hspl2,
put phone into bootloader manually first and connect usb lead
(thats why it was timing out on you ((error 262)) because the connection takes too long to reconnect when it reboots from winmo into bootloader, , if you do it yourself first, that solves this error 99% of the time.)
when 'serial' changes to 'usb' run hspl2, choose 1.66.0000 (i recommend this because 2.08.0000, whilst stock, is a tmous stock, so 'may' give problems, , totally unconfirmed, but i had issues recently removing android/magldr whilst spl was 2.08.0000, i switched to 1.66.0000 and it worked straight away, i have a slight hunch that spl 2 doesnt like to be downgraded in some circumstances, , if you preffer you could use hspl4 and go straight for 3.03.0000, since that is whjat your 3.14 rom will install anyway when you flash it)
when it reboots saying its done, immediately hold voldown to re-enter bootloader
when serial changes to usb, run your 3.14.exe

Ignore that..
Mate - you're a genius. Followed your instructions and it worked like a charm.
Cheers pal. You saved my brain
Erm, not sure how much more basic i can make it. (Ignore my descriptions, just follow the steps)
Power off, hold voldown, power on keeping voldown held,, see multi striped coloured screen, that's bootloader, you can flash from this screen.
First you should try without bothering to change the spl.
Enter bootloader and connect USB, run the 3.14 you downloaded. That's it.
If it doesn't work, try changing spl as in my previous post by entering bootloader, and instead of running the 3.14 you run hspl instead.
As for writing a guide, you already read the various "how to flash.." guides (there are several) and watched the (also several) YouTube guides before you even started this thread,,, didn't you? Didn't you?? If not then shame on you!
Post back and ill check tomorrow.

[Q] help pls. what is a boot repair?

hi guys,
pls help me out here. i have a t mobile htc hd2 running energy rom. with some third party applications. it was working fine until i plugged it to a previously unused power supply to charge. as it started to charge the battery suddenly the phone went blank. no response at all. charging indicator was also not working. i tried removing the battery, soft reset button and hard reset too. but nothing worked. so i took the phone to a shop and they tell me it needs a "boot repair" which costs 90usd. my queries are these.
1. what is a boot repair? is it a hardware problem or a software problem?
2. why did this happen? is it because of a power supply error? is it due to the custom rom or applications i m using?
3. is this a known issue with the hd2?
4. how can i prevent this from happening again?
thanks
A boot repair must be a JTAG cause that is what JTAG does for a device is reserect the SPL or what is know as the bootloader. The bootloader is what boots first when you power on your device and it boots up the hardware and software of the device. Plus to JTAG a device you have to totally remove the main board from the device. So you see a "boot repair" is part a hardware repair and part a software repair because it is the software that allows the software to use the hardware.
I am not exactly sure why it happened, but I am sure it must have had something to do with the charger you plugged it into. I can pretty much assure you it had nothing to do with the ROM you was using. What makes me wonder though is sense it happen when you plugged it into a charger. You may need more than a JTAG as it might have fried your main board somehow.
The only known issue with bricking a T-Mobile HD2 is flashing a radio version of 2.04.50.xx, 2.05.50.xx, 2.06.50.xx, or any x.xx.51.xx radio will always brick a TMOUS. Also somehow letting the HD2 become disconnected from the USB cable while you are flashing a ROM or radio will cause a HD2 or most any device to become bricked.
As for preventing it from happening again I would pay attention to my above warnnings and also not use that charger again.
Also PM me and I can reffer aomeone that can JTAG your HD2 for $50 USD too. You would have to shipp your HD2 to them though, but the live in the US.

thanks. that enlightened me a lot. somebody told me that after the boot reapir their is increased risk of bricking the phone again. is that true? (he said its because the procedure involves somthing to do with writing the "bios" ) and is it safe to install the custom rom again?

Yes when you JTAG a HD2 you are doing something very similiar to rewritting the bios of a computer. But the HD2 does not have bios like a computet, someone please correct me if I am wrong with that statement. What you are actually doing when you JTAG a HD2 is rewritting the SPL or as the RiffBox software calls it "reserect the SPL".
Now as far as I know thos does not make your HD2 any more suseptable to being bricked than before it was JTAGed. And yes you can still flash custom ROM, MAGLDR, or cLK but you will have to flash HSPL again before you flash any of them because JTAG will only rewrite stock SPL to the HD2.

thanks, but the problem is worse now. they say now that there is some kind of "short circuit" in the system and because of that they are unable to repair it. currently they have sent a mail to htc requesting for a map of the hd2 circuit or something.
what could i do? is there anything to do or is it better to get a new phone?

Thanks for the info, I have never JTAGed a HD2 or any other device for that matter. I have though done a good bit of research on it and I thought it was a stock SPL. I learned something today.
