EDIT: Originally posted in HTC Desire Dev forum. Moved here by a mod. This is a DEV issue/question, IMO, not really an attempt to promote or ask about my app.
I'm new to the Desire forums, so please be gentle if I've broken any rules.
My main question is should I buy an HTC Desire or Desire HD for further development of my app ?
I've developed a "Real" FM Radio app with RDS features and some other enhancements relative to the MIUI and CM apps. It's derived from the Code Aurora FM app that MIUI and CM are derived from.
At present, it's been tested well on HTC Legend, and also works on HTC Click and may work on other TI WL125x/127x FM/BT/Wifi chips.
I added some "experimental" support for the more popular Broadcom FM etc chips, but only the 4 simple functions in the CM app: namely On, Off, Tune and Volume/mute.
I'm about to buy a Broadcom based device, perhaps on Tuesday. The Desire and Desire HD look like my best choices. I considered a Desire Z but get a bad vibe on that from some quick reading.
If I was just buying for personal use, I'd likely get an HD for $500 Canadian new from Telus. The lesser Desire at $450 doesn't seem like a good deal, but there might be some reasons why it would be easier/better to develop on the Desire. I might be able to get a Desire used for $300 or so, but I think I'd be better off just getting a new phone.
AFAICT, the important issues to me are that both phones are supported with stock FM apps from HTC, and both support the MIUI ROMs with their FM app (?) and both support CM with their FM app. These things will make my task easier, especially given that I will likely have to do reverse engineering (again!) to get stuff like RDS working.
Also, the effort required to root/install new ROMs is an issue.
If anyone has a TI FM chip device, or feels brave enough to test my "experimental" Broadcom support, see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13162409&postcount=117
Any thoughts, please share. Happy Easter !
I would say go for the Desire. The Desire HD is too big to be used as a phone and the battery life too short.
I would love to see a FM app working with RDS on custom ROMs for the Desire. Go for it, please

Saw a video of the MIUI 2.2 ROM being used on HTC Evo (New Sense). Was wondering if anyone is currectly porting it to the Hero. It looked unbelievably amazing overall. Could do with a bit of customisation (maybe give possiblility to keep App Drawer) but it does look great. Anyway if there is anyone porting...Good Luck!!
Miui for HTC Hero G2
Hi,
I've been searching for 4 days this rom for hero. No luck. But may be some smart, genius, bravehearth guy will come and port it to hero.
))
Best
D.
I am not aware of any hero ports, since it seems to be for HDPI devices with ARMv7 CPUs. That means the libs wouldn't work.
Perhaps if source code were available it might be possible?
I saw this ROM in desire section I think. Perhaps some devs over there have sources ? Just a wild guess

Okay, so the only thing that has me still thinking that WM6.5 is still superior to Android is the depressing quality of A2DP in the Android builds for the HD2.
I mean, granted it's higher quality than listening to music via the hands-free profile, but it is woefully lacking when compared to the A2DP coming from WM6.5 on my HD2.
I found a thread of Evo owners who are similarly upset over this, and there seems to be one ROM variant out there that addresses this for Evo owners, so surely this must be something that can be fixed on the ROM's for the HD2? (also, RIP Leslie Nielson)
The thread is here
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9888
Has there been any research into what (if anything) users can do to better the quality of A2DP on Android?
Yes.. thank you for sharing this issue with us.. i hope google will fix this bug.. it just gives some white-noises in a music! i can't describe it
EDIT: Check this out, someone actually found a way for it!
is this wat u mean? or im showing something off (fast forward to 1:38)

while reading this issue 9888.. i found out that it was fixed on CM 6.1
Can any developer take a look at this for the sense roms?

Check out this thread! Loads of us have been asking the same question for a while now. I wonder if it's fixed in Gingerbread...anyone tried it?
I have tried Cyanogen's new Gingerbread build on my HD2 and for the first time, I heard crisp, quality A2DP over my phone. It was awesome. However, I want to continue using my Froyo sense build so really would like to see a fix. It's possible....we just need a genius or 2 to work it out! I wonder if Cyanogen is contactable?
I am using the NAND stock Desire ROM on my HD2, and my AD2P is working flawlessly with my Sony Xplod unit in my car. HTC phones always worked good for me.

Hi all,
I tried about every rom out there. It seems to me AOSP based roms would be the way to go, both because I like the open source idea in general, and because they're generally faster and more customized.
Wildfire seems to have more problems with AOSP android, though, and it seems HTC specific apps are needed: camera recording is an example, as there's no AOSP based rom which can record with no problems.
What I'm asking is, is Wildfire an exception? I could see myself upgrading my phone in the future, so I'm trying to figure out if I need to avoid HTC as a whole, and if maybe there are other companies which use more standard hardware, AOSP ready. Or if Wildfire is indeed an exception due to low price and I can chose a more high end HTC.
Thanks for info!

hi everybody
ive come up with an idea, now the android builds/roms we use are normally from other android phones,Each android phone does something a bit different compared to others. Now Htc desire HD rom is slightly Different from a Desire Z rom.heres my idea, how about combining all the different features of the sence roms into one big build, you would need to use data to sd(euro hd2) Unfortunently im no dev,im just a graphic designer, heres what im thinking, base would be 2.3 gingerbread or froyo 2.2.1,have the menu from the nexus s(2.3),dunno if thats a 2.3 feature or not.720p recording if we can get that working,Evo keyboard,Strait bar lockscreen, bit like from the HD mini,Evolution sence bar(the bit at the bottom with the menu phone and personalise buttons),Framework close to stock but with a Battery indicator,Rotatable Sence From the Desire Z,Music player from Desire HD,Would be a big rom but crammed full of features, best of everything, obviusly HTC wont bring out android update for us so lets all do it.The Unofficial HTC HD2 android Rom,Any Devs wanna take up the challenge
I like the idea, but I think it would be impossible to do. htc employs teams of engineers working on these builds full time for one. And they have all the best in equipment and testing. So resources is an issue right off the bat.
In addition to that, I'm sure there's a reason why you can't move data.imgs from one build to another, they're probably not compatible.

Like the reply above me says... we don't have an army of devs and millions of $ to spend on development. It's amazing what the devs have been able to do, but the main reason they have accomplished what they have is because there were similar devices we were able to port from. We are running a port... I don't think the hd2 will ever have its own Rom not taken from another device.

The Matrix
Dude, its a nice thought but to wuote agent smith. Your living in a dream world neo.
i think it is possible, just take a bit of time, you just gotta look at it from a different angle.i have a theory about how to do it just a Dev would need actually need to do it,could even set up a Bounty if needs be but would be great to see.Base Rom we can use The desire Z 2.2.1 rom as base as its lighter than HD,i dont think Gingerbread is coming to desire Z just yet.So use that. Then incorperate the Desire HD music player(i have an apk for that)Near original framework but with a battery percentage in the battery icon(i have an apk for that).Evolution Sence bar or rEvolution you can get here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=891520 ,Evo keyboard i think we can use HTC_IME wich i have an apk for aswell, you would need to use data to sd wich has allready been done becouse it would be a big build,All we need is for someone to bring em all together to Creat the rom,If somebody was wanting to do it i can put those apk up on here for download
I've found something interesting here.

I think this is a customized OS based on Android.
I owned a "Meizu M8" previously and this also had a similar looking OS. It was Windows Mobile 6 with some "apps" on top developed by Meizu (chinese cellphone company) that changed the whole look to what you see in the video above...
When I was leaving the Meizu scene there were some rumors about the next phone gen using Android as OS...
Oh and I don't recommend porting... It hasn't had that much additional functionality in the past and was full of bugs. Everytime two bugs where fixed four new ones appeared... This could be because of WM6 but I think it's also because of Meizu not being that experienced at developing (compared to Google/Apple). And of course it would be a hell of work to get this (chinese) thing adopted to western language - there were several compatibility issues although we had some very good coders working on it.
It does actually look good, anyone want to try it?
