If youre phone is rooted you can do it without odin but not without a tar or zip file for a kernel
1.Download SGS kernel flasher from market
2. Download a Kernel which supports Custom Recovery (for Example the CF-Root kernel in the version Nee-JVB-CWM3RFS 3.1)
3. Give Sgs kernel flasher su permissions
4. "Backup Kernel" (if you want)
5. "Choose Kernel" -> Choose the kernel you've downloaded -> "flash"
6. wait for reboot
7. Power your phone off and go with the 3button combo in recovery
8. Flash the custom rom you want

hey thanks for the reply! i just figured it out myself using the method u just described what a coincidence lol i just went to the market - downloaded sgs kernel flasher app - then downloaded the cf-root xwjvb kernel zip file, extracted the zImage file out of it and used the app to flash it....cool no more 3e recovery, now i can flash some custom roms yay!! i couldnt find my flippin usb cable thats why i couldnt use odin to flash ha ha

I just installed JPA firmware through Kies.
Then i installed ROM Manager to create a backup.
But when i try to create a backup it gives an error in the recovery menu, saying it can't run the update.zip file (to run clockworkmod i believe)!
I realised that the recovery menu is different!
What's wrong?
I cant use ROM Manager anymore?
Im assuming because when you flash froyo you get 3e which doesn't accept zip's signed with testkeys, only accepts release keys.
There are plenty of options/threads to get 2e back.
Ps wrong section
Yeah, i just realised that i have a new recovery mode (3e).
Are you talking about this version?
"[30.10.10][CF-Root v1.2] JPH JPK JP6 JPM JPA JPO - superuser+busybox+2e, CWM compat!" from Chainfire
You talked about plenty of options but i only found that one.
There are other options without using ODIN? Because i never used ODIN...
Just flash the speedmod kernel, it has 2e recovery and lag fix options in there, very nice.

Download and flash through odin DDLC2_ODDLA2_DDLC2 or DDLE1_DDLD1_DDLE1. Even I had problem with DDLA3_DDLA2_DDLA2.
Hope it works now.
hmmm
Im really confused, because if you flashed merruk kernel and it did not work then just download recovery kernel..
put phone in download mode (power+home+volume down)
plug phone to pc while odin is open
choose recovery kernel on PDA option (don't check or uncheck anything)
flash it and it should work... lol

It was happened to me before.. I have no choice but to flash to a fresh STOCK ROM with stock Kernel.
The SOLUTION would be ODIN. Go to Doky's thread and select the latest version of your firmware based on your country - download and extract.
Here's his thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465800
Now, download ODIN if you're not having it yet. here's the thread - credits to OP : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1464775
Here's the instruction on how to flash to STOCK ROM and Kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21846668&postcount=2
I did formatted my sd card extent that time too hope it helps.

Flash stock rom via odin. U can get all the requirements at sir doky73's thread.
What u need :
1. Odin
2. Your own country's firmware and totoro_0623.pit ( find it on the web. )
3. Usb drivers
4. A pc
5. Samsung usb cable
Extract the zip file u downloaded of your country's firmware. Open the odin.exe on your pc (windows ), then pit option choose totoro.pit, boot option choose boot, phone choose modem file, pda choose pda.
Finished press volume down + home button + power button to download mode on samsung galaxy y. Then screen turns on press volume up again. Connect the usb cable to your phone to pc.
Then odin recognises your phone and shows a yellow thing on the top. Then press start and wait for it to boot up !

from where can i get a flashable zip of stock kernel??????
Idk. Search...
Try to get a boot.img of stock kernel.
Then search for Sgybicwm.zip in general section. Put the stock boot.img in root of your sdcard and flash sgybicwm.zip via cwm. You are done.
Any other boot.img flasher like faqbly wont work. I just tried it with hells fusion 50. it has a stock kernels boot.img inside stock folder of the kernels zip. Get that and sgybicwm.zip

i dont know what is download mode. i cant go in recovery mode too. its my fisrtt mobile.only passed 3 months with it . o god i am crying:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Ok.
Here is what you need to do.
Download a stock rom from dock73's thread from dev section (its a sticky one, so no trouble in finding it).
Then download odin3 v1.85 from same thread.
Get samsung mobile device drivers.
Install drivers first.
Then extract all those zips (rom and odin ) in a separate folder.
Open odin.exe.
Then switch off your phone (pull battery if nothing works).
Press Volume down + Power + Home Buttons All at same time
You will be I'm download mode.
Press volume up and connect your phone to pc with data cable.
You will see a yellow signal on odin screen. Dont change anything and just add those files from the firmwares you extracted in the folder.
Csc.tar.md5 for csc
Modem.tar.md5 for phone
And
pda.tar.md5 for pda
Click on start and it will show a pass to you when completed.
Hope that complets all for you.
If you still dont get head over to docky thread.
And see 2nd post.

you dont flash the boot.img via odin
you flash tar files via odin (which contain the boot.img) but it has to be an odin flashable tar file
if you only have the boot.img file you can flash it via cwm with the boot image installer zip file
All instructions on how to flash each kernel will be on the op of each kernel thread

no way to flash custom ROM whit ODIN(i think)....only whit custom recovery(TWRP,CWM)
If u have rooted, install TWRP and read instruction
Instruction from 'Infinity Note 5 ROM' thread;
1) Put the zip file in your SDCard (also put bloatware removal zip if you want it debloated)
2) Reboot in recovery mode
3) Wipe system/data/cache/dalvik cache
4) Install the rom zip and after that flash the bloatware removal (optional)
Note: if it stucked on samsung logo you need to fix permissions, so you need to enter recovery mode again and click advanced/fix permissions and reboot

i extracted the boot.img from update package N910HXXU1COH4_N910HOLB1COH4_N910HXXU1COH3_HOME.tar
now, im not sure how to flash it !! via odin or anything else needed

when I had my S3 if I needed the stock kernel I would simply reflash the stock rom since they usually have the stock kernels built-in

Never tried with samsung phones (and probably it is not possible) but with my other android devices I just extract the boot.img from the ROM and flash it with fastboot using the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img".
With a samsung device you should probably (or definitely) create a flashable .zip file with the boot.img of your stock ROM and flash it via recovery.
You need to download your original kernel from net, there are 2 types of file you’ll find, one is .zip and another one is .tar. If you download .zip file you have to flash it with recovery (CWM/TWRP) or if you download .tar file (don't try to make your own .tar file) then you can flash it with Odin tool.
