ROM Manager with Official Froyo not possible? - Galaxy S I9000 General

I just installed JPA firmware through Kies.
Then i installed ROM Manager to create a backup.
But when i try to create a backup it gives an error in the recovery menu, saying it can't run the update.zip file (to run clockworkmod i believe)!
I realised that the recovery menu is different!
What's wrong?
I cant use ROM Manager anymore?

Im assuming because when you flash froyo you get 3e which doesn't accept zip's signed with testkeys, only accepts release keys.
There are plenty of options/threads to get 2e back.
Ps wrong section

Yeah, i just realised that i have a new recovery mode (3e).
Are you talking about this version?
"[30.10.10][CF-Root v1.2] JPH JPK JP6 JPM JPA JPO - superuser+busybox+2e, CWM compat!" from Chainfire
You talked about plenty of options but i only found that one.
There are other options without using ODIN? Because i never used ODIN...

Just flash the speedmod kernel, it has 2e recovery and lag fix options in there, very nice.

How to flash kernel back to 2e recovery without the 3button boot/download function!

Hi there,
I'm a newbie to android. Just got my i9000 (international version of Galaxy S) for two weeks which I like it very much and flashed it to the official Froyo 2.2 (Build ZSJPD, which to my understanding is based on the European JPO) straight away. But only recently that I find out that it can neither boot into the recovery nor the download mode via the 3 button method, which makes flashing via the Odin impossible for me. I tried to download the Rom Manager to install the Clockwork Recovery Mod but I faced the same problem as the top message of this thread, i.e. it cannot get into the unsigned CWM recovery as it is running the stock 3e recovery.
Nonetheless, thanks to the "Quick Boot App", I was able to go into the stock recovery mode by clicking the dedicated button. So my question is:
Is there any way I could flash the stock kernel back to 2e recovery, given the above condition, so that I could run the CWM recovery?
Is there any apps, which would actual install a different kernel so that I could bypass the stock kernel?
Hope big guys out there could give me some hint and show me the way! Otherwise, I would miss a lot fun and can't even apply the Universal lagfix.
Alex
I am curious too. I am running ZSJPE (Asian Build) but it doesn't seem to have 2e recovery as I am unable to boot into CWM, even with ROM Manager installed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It amazes me the amount of people flashing roms without 3br. Why dont you install the 3br fix? then you can do whatever you like to your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201 odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821698 update.zip
Try either of these before you brick your phone! it doesnt matter how carefully you follow instructions it takes just one bad flash and your history...

I've been directed to one of these links to fix the 3BR bug on my I9000, but after reading some replies I'm a little hesitant as several people have reported their phone being bricked thanks to it...
If by any chance my phone does get bricked because of this, is there any other way to re-flash or something of the sort?
EDIT: Sorry to bump an old post...

If youre phone is rooted you can do it without odin but not without a tar or zip file for a kernel
1.Download SGS kernel flasher from market
2. Download a Kernel which supports Custom Recovery (for Example the CF-Root kernel in the version Nee-JVB-CWM3RFS 3.1)
3. Give Sgs kernel flasher su permissions
4. "Backup Kernel" (if you want)
5. "Choose Kernel" -> Choose the kernel you've downloaded -> "flash"
6. wait for reboot
7. Power your phone off and go with the 3button combo in recovery
8. Flash the custom rom you want

hey thanks for the reply! i just figured it out myself using the method u just described what a coincidence lol i just went to the market - downloaded sgs kernel flasher app - then downloaded the cf-root xwjvb kernel zip file, extracted the zImage file out of it and used the app to flash it....cool no more 3e recovery, now i can flash some custom roms yay!! i couldnt find my flippin usb cable thats why i couldnt use odin to flash ha ha

[JVH Install Help] Bell Canada

Here's what I did to get JVH (with 850mhz band) and CSC for Canada on my phone. It worked for me at least
Files:
SpeedmodK15E_withLoaders.tar.md5 (8.38 MB)
http://www.multiupload.com/SRVH1BTK8R
JVH_KC1_BMC.zip (169.32 MB)
http://www.multiupload.com/1FHETKJOWA
StockJVH_Kernal_noLoaders.tar.md5 (5.47 MB)
http://www.multiupload.com/PM3AXR7JFG
**************Disclaimer:***************
I'm not responsible if this bricks your phone, as "the boss" said if I break mine, she'll break me... or I get a $20 replacement phone
Backup your /efs folder, backup EVERYTHING, just in case... I'm paranoid so I did it all
ROM NOTES:
Got deodexed from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11256520&postcount=1
Modem:
KC1
Busybox:
1.18.4
Hosts file updated for ad blocking using:
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
Here's the steps I followed:
Save all files to folder/desktop
Connect phone via usb and copy JVH_KC1_BMC.zip to root of sdcard
Restart phone in download mode
Open Odin and click PDA
Select Speedmod tar file
Uncheck Auto-Reboot
Check F.Reset Time (I don't know what it does, but it's always checked)
Flash the tar.
Once complete and the box says "PASS" in green, unplug your phone and pull the battery (I was told it's safe, as it's in the MIUI instructions as well)
Put battery back in and start phone in recovery with VOL UP+HOME+POWER
In recovery choose to update from zip
Choose file from sdcard
Choose the JVH_KC1_BMC zip file and update
The phone will restart/install.
Once it's started up for the first time I recommend restarting in download mode and flashing the stock JVH kernal
You can also use any kernal you want.
Let me know if I can help at all. I was trying to make a completely odin flashable tar for this but failed miserably :9
I'll do my best to answer any questions however this is my first time making something to flash for you all
Note:
I'm not sure where to put this, sorry to mods/admins if it's in the wrong spot, please let me know
Hi,
I saw your thread, and I found it very interesting for people who own a Bell SGS 9000m Vibrant and wanna upgrate to Gingerbread.
So I decided to flash the Gingerbread JVH ROM just like you did, but I need to know a few things:
1. Will I be able to downgrade to my original stock froyo after this flash ?
2. Will I be able to update via Kies in case Bell release an official gingerbread update ?
3. Right now my phone is SIMUnlocked, will I lose my SIMunlockation after the flash ?
4. And is my actual configuration right to excecute this flash or should I flash something else before ?
My configuration is the following:
Baseband version
I9000UGJL2
Firmware
2.2
Kernel
2.6.32.9
[email protected] #3
Build number
FROYO.UGJL2
galaxy s vibrant bell
gt-i9000m
Thanks for your hard work, I hope to read back from you soon.
I have exact same configuration and exact same questions as poster above!!!
Still no answer... Guess we'll have to try if wanna know...

1. yes, it's possible
2. yes, but you would either need to downgrade first or do a kies hack
3. no
4. you can do it straight
Thanks zorxd.
I am going to try. So there is no need for me to select any Pit file or did the guy forget to mention it ? Also can we tick the repartition option in Odin?
Sorry if I ask usekess question I am used to flash android but new to the SGS flashing...
when you repartition you need a PIT file.
My advice is to not repartition unless you need it.
Too late... I did it got stuck into bootloop. I had an error when I tried to install the zip from the recovery (I had recovery 3e) : E : Short write of /tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device) . However, I flashed the back eclair JHL and went back to the stock eclair rom. I am going to restart from there following your intructions. I now have recovery 2e ( Somehow I can't get ClockWorkMod Recovery to load directly; it always send me to recovery 2e and there I apply update.zip to go to CWM recovery)
Thanks for your help, I'll let you know if I manage to get it done.
Still get the error E:Short write of/tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device) when try to install JVH_KC1_BMC.zip from the recovery 3e ( this recovery comes right after I flash SpeedmodK15E_withLoaders.tar ...
Don't know what else to try... Help please..
I did it a slightly different way. From 2.2, I flashed a stock 3 part gingerbread rom (phone, PDA, CSC) with bootloader update using ODIN 1.82. I then flashed CF root gingerbread kernel for CWM3 and then flashed the KC1 modem from clockwork recovery for the 850 band.
Could you please show me the exact files you used so I can try to do the same ?
Aren't there at least a couple threads on how to install jvh/jvp on an i9000? Its the exact same process as those you just have to flash the kc1 modem via cwm after you are done. It sounds like you guys are experimenting too much.

Our canadian phone is not really different from all the other ones, so you don't need a special "Bell Canada" installation.
If you want JVH, you can follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
You don't have to do everything like fugumod, etc. I would flash JVH via odin and then flash CF root kernel via odin so you get CWM3.
There's also leaked 2.3.4 JVP gingerbread out, if you feel inclined:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
There's a way to enable 850 band on the different gingerbread modems, but i never bothered, I just flashed the KC1 modem for Bell which has the band (via CWM3). Search for I9000UGKC1

Okay I am really starting to freak out now...
I am stuck in bootloop, I can't get out og it. I tried flash Back the Stock Bell Firmware but it keeps boot looping. Download mode is okay. But it started doing this I had a message like sd could not be mounted in recovery 3e. Now I can't even access recovery after I flash Eclair but Download mode is still okay...
Aby ideas ?
Have you tried flashing back the stock JL2 firmware from bell? (found on samfirmware.com)
I've never encountered this error before, I wonder if it is a problem with the bootloaders, as the official froyo firmware from bell had a secondary bootloader and gingerbread has its own bootloaders as well.

I imagine you'll need the stock bell firmware as said above and also the proper PIT file to go along with it.
Sent from my Darky's i9000m
Also if you repartitioned it when you tried to flash the whatever it was when you tried you will also have to repartition it when going back down to froyo.
2.2 and 2.3 use different bootloaders therefore if you try to mix and match rom's without the bootloaders and repartioning you will get a ****y phone.

Thanks for your help guys. I didn't solve it yet, but i will open a new thread to prevent this one from getting to messy.

How to install and download Clockworkmod recovery on my sgs i9000m

My specs are as followed:
firmware 2.2
baseband version i9000UGJL2
Kernal Version 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #6
Mind you also that when I go on stock recovery, it says <3e>. I know that there is some troubles with that.
Well, you just have to flash a kernel that includes CWM (flash with Odin, put it into PDA-field, boot into download mode, connect your Galaxy with your PC and press 'Start').

I had the same setup as you, including 3e recovery. I flashed speedmod k13e kernel for froyo, using odin, and it included cwm 2.5.1.0. Just leave it at that and you should always get into cwm when booting into recovery. Anytime I tried to upgrade cwm, or use rom manager, it just screwed it all up and reverted to stock 3e recovery. So I would advise against trying that stuff.
Good luck1

yep you and the guy above me were right indeed. Flashed it and it all works perfectly now
However there are some problems I've encountered, which i will post another thread about. They aren't Major problems but they are annoying ones nonetheless.

[BOOT LOOP] Please help, CF-Root via Odin > no recovery > download mode works

What happened...
> Phone was fully stock
> Rooted via "super one click"
> Unlocked via "galaxy s unlock"
> Installed rom manager (CWM was unable to be flashed cause of 3e recovery)
> Wiped the phone using both options in 3e < (was this a silly thing to do?)
> Downloaded Odin3 v1.85
> Downloaded (what I believe to be) CF-Root-XW_OXX_JV1-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1_NO-CWM
*I'm not 100% sure that is the kernel I downloaded... the kernel I downloaded is from "samsunggalaxysforum" in topic "Rooting Help, Choosing the right CF-Root. Gingerbread" is reply #6 posted by saszseb. Attachment named "zImage-root". Sorry no link as I'm not allowed to post them... PM me for link of specific file (kernel).
> Put phone in download mode
> Selected the zImage-root.tar folder for the PDA
> Made sure re-partition and flash lock were unchecked
> Plugged phone into PC
> Clicked start, Odin says succesful=1/fail=0 or something along those lines
> Phone goes to do its auto reboot...
> Then just boot loops, first the galaxy s i9000 screen then the fugumod and just keeps looping.
I can't get into recovery via 3 button, but download mode work and Odin sees the phone thank god
What do I do, have I missed a step? Have I flashed the wrong kernel? ...please help.
Thank you XDA.
Now that you can only access download mode, I'd recommend you to flash latest value pack firmware(JW4, can be found here in general section), and then CF-root for JW4.
Btw, I think wiping was your fault. Why do you wipe whole data before flashing a new kernel? You should only wipe data before flashing a rom.
Hey dark_knight35 thanks for your reply,
Before I saw someone haded replied I flash CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.5-CWM3RFS and the phone works again, everything works aswell btw no issues with the kernel.
I shall try the JW4 one but I'm really after getting the Glitch kernel and CM7 rom, problem I'm having with that is I do not know if the CWM that is built into CF-Root will just disappear and go back to 3e recovery if I flash Glitch right now as that doesn't have CWM built in.
I hope that installing rom manager and reflashing CWM will work so when I go flash Glitch kernel I shall still have CWM.

If u flash a glitch kernel u will still have cwm recovery
Download hardcore kernel for i9000. Google it and u will find it. Make sure u download the .tar odin flashable version
Flash via odin
Then recovery should be back.

Hiya drew071,
In the last few minutes ive flashed Glitch 13.1 and CM7.1 via CWM
In other words I've reached my goal.... xD YEAHHHHHH!!!!!!!
I kinda answered my own question about CWM but thank you so SO much for your reply.
This has really made all the hours (its been a few weeks) of wondering around here (XDA) and other dev sites very worth while.
I will now compile a thread about where I came from, what I wanted and what I've learned and also a how to. I'd like it if when I'm done that it is made sticky.
Thank you everyone at XDA.
