[Q] Removing preinstalled apps on HTC EVO 4g Sprint - EVO 4G General

Would like to know if there is a simple way to remove the crap apps they preinstalled on my evo, like stocks and its widget, sprint football etc.
I'm not sure all this root and roms stuff is for me I don't invison doing the things you all do I just want to get rid of some of the apps I'll never use that drain the battery and use up space.
Thanks
Steve
Thanks

You have to be rooted first. The go into titanium backup, and you can delete the stock sprint apps; football, ect.

Couldn't he use that temp root application with titanium backup then just reboot his phone?
I think the temp root application is called 4zroot or something.

I would suppose he could; but I've never used it, so I didn't recommend it having no use with it, or its limitations; other than it looses root after every reboot.

I don't think z4root supports the EVO

Get the app here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833954
But like teh roxxorz said I have never used it so I don't know. As easy as it is to run unrevoked I would say just use unrevoked and be done with it. That way fubar59 can install a custom recovery and make a nandroid backup before removing anything. Making it that much easier to fix if something goes wrong because some of the app are required by the system. Than it is to explain to Sprint why their apps are not on the phone.

I know you said you don't think you want to bother with rooting and all but...
If it's really that big of a deal to get the bloatware off I'd say go ahead and just spend a little time and root your phone...
I didn't really think I wanted to bother with it either but after I did I started flashin all sorts of stuff and am really glad that I did it...
Plus, after you root and get the stuff off that you dont need then you can just keep on using your phone the way you always have and when/if you ever feel like making a nandroid or flashing a new ROM then you're set...

Questions
OK, thanks for the answers. I guess I'll root the thing as I am tired of the crap apps reactivating after I force close them. Battery drain when you are away from your charger is a problem for me on several occassions and it is a pain in the butt.
Thanks again for the replys!

You are completely misunderstood. DO NOT force close any apps in android, or use task killers. They are not needed, and THEY are causing your battery to drain faster.
Android is completely different from windows. Just because you see all those programs listed as "running" in your task killer, well they actually arent. They are just cached. Android likes to keep its memory full of apps, and if it needs more memory, it will handle that by closing apps on its own.
When YOU force close any apps, the Android OS sees a lot of empty space in its memory, and will automatically load those apps back into cache. That's the reason why everytime you force close those apps, they come right back. Because you are disrupting the way android works.

if the apps you uninstalled keep returning after a reboot, use a file manager with root and navigate to /system/apps and delete the ones you dont want, then uninstall them again

sorry, was referring to my earlier question. Still learning this site and its tools.

[Q] Im new to this rooting thing. I have a few questions.

So originally when I bought this phone I decided I was no going to root it because I was afraid of voiding the warranty or bricking the phone. Now I kind of want to root it but I have a few (dumb) questions:
1. What are ROMS? I hear of custom ROMS and I dont know what they do or where to get them. Help?
2. What is "Superuser Access" or whatever its called that gives you the rooting powers?
3. Why root? What are the advantages/disadvantages?
4. When I root, what are some of the first things I should do? Like do I have to restore my contacts, pics, etc or back anything up to my computer?
5. And last, what are some of the best apps to get after root?
Thank you guys for the feedback. This community really helps whenever I have dumb questions.

I'm fairly new to it myself and took a bit to figure out but I've become pretty comfortable with it.
The 2.2 Froyo update will be here soon enough so I haven't even bothered looking at any ROM replacemnts.
The Superuser Permissions will show up after you root the phone. It allows the programs that need these permissions to use em. You'll get a dialog box asking you to allow and if you want to remember the preference when you first run an app that needs this.
Several neat/tweaking apps require a rooted phone. You can also delete alot of the crap that came on the phone that you don't need once it's rooted. I like to tweak and customize alot which is why I decided to go ahead and root it.
I'd definitely download a good backup app and save everything. I use Ti Backup myself. I also did the RyanZa's lag fix. It makes a nice difference. Benchmark went from around 900ish to 1800-2000. I've also removed the boot up/shut down sounds and installed an app that kills the lockscreen so all I have to do is hit the power buttom and I'm at my home screen. There's a few other apps I'm using that require a rooted phone but that's the highlight.
The first post in the Tips/Tricks sticky is a good place to start if you haven't already looked at it.
I'd also suggest doing the GPS fix if you haven't already. It makes a nice difference.
Home screen replacements are a good start too but don't think they necessarily require a rooted phone. I'm using LauncherPro with a custom dock bar and it looks nothing like it did to begin with now.
Wireless tether is a must have that requires root. Other than that, I haven't modded my Vibrant. On my rooted G1 I changed ROMS almost as often as my socks and installed everything under the sun. It made a world of difference on that phone.

[Q] How can delete the preloaded Amazon Mp3 Application

I really wanted to delete this application since it is FC on me and messing up my phone. Is there a way i can get rid it from the phone else i might need to return this phone back to tmobile and get another one

You'll need a rooted phone to nuke the preloaded apps unless there is another way I don't know about.
i absolutely hate that app. its useless to a deaf person. This may be a good enough reason to justify using a task manager -- not for android, but to silence the tmobile parade of amazonmp3 and the stupid photobucket app. god!!!!!!! enough is enough. I have task manager killing both these persistently. i also hide the apps in ADW launcher -- when app drawer is pulled up - hit settings then choose group and you can hide apps.

Did you ever try running it or something? AmazonMP3 never runs on my phone but I've never hit the app either. No forcecloses here so a wipe should probably help.
I've only had photobucket try to open once and i've never had amazon open.

My suggestion would be a factory reset and if that doesn't work then exchange it for a new G2 because i haven't had Amazon force close on me once.

Or you can just try clearing the data from AmazonMP3 only (Settings-Applications-Manage applications). That might do the trick.

Few questions/need advice

So I have DL09 across the board (kernal, blackhole rom, radio), and im thinking about making the switch to eb01, but I dont want to go through the hastle of reinstalling everything and setting up my phone the way I like it. Is there any way to do the upgrade without losing everything?
Also, is the gps realllllllly fixed this time? I thought dl09 and the 05 were supposed to fix it but neither worked for me.
Any help would be useful. I dont need lengthy explanations if you are busy, just more of a steer in the right direction. I used to read this and the dev forum religiously but ive fallen behind I feel like I dont know where to start.
Thanks in advance everyone!

Well.. you can use titanium backup to back up most of your stuff. For icon placements and stuff it depends on your launcher although mybackups never restored after wiping and then installing eb01 so who knows
Most third party launchers have a home screen backup capability... And Titanium Backup is the way to go for backing up your apps and their data. The paid version makes it even easier, allowing for batch restores without having to manually reinstall each app. Also, link all your contacts to gmail, and they will all be restored once you get setup again.
Following these easy steps will allow you to get your phone set back up in just a few minutes after flashing a new ROM

GB debloating: removing "blur_yahoo.apk" breaks contacts.

I just spent some time trying to figure out what had broken my contacts functionality and this was it. Again, removing "blur_yahoo.apk" and the associated .odex file will break the contacts app. After removal, clicking on a contact in the dialer/contact app will just shut the app down. I've no idea why, since the yahoo app is for yahoo mail.

F**k...I just noticed that too
I noticed that freezing some of the messaging/social services also seems to force close the built-in message app too. If you use something like ChompSMS then it isn't a big deal b/c that still works.

You should probably do some more research before you start messing with that b/c it can brick the OS requiring a full install of the ROM. In this case, if you don't do a restore before removing stuff you'll be restoring the SBF file a lot.
But to answer your question though...the app you want is Titanium Backup Pro (aka the pay version b/c of the "Freeze" option.)

Well since the GB build for the DX just came out, I haven't been able to find a definitive thread anywhere (including on MyDroidWorld) listing what is save to remove or at least freeze. As of right now I think it's safe to say that its going to be a trial and error situation.
There are threads somewhere (droidforums?) about which of the 2.1 and 2.2 apps are safe to remove. While there are some new apps, those that were safe before are still safe. Of the new apps, the blur_yahoo is the only one that's given me trouble. Be warned, though, that while you can remove Backup Assistant and Blur Home, if you do a factory reset from within Android (rather than from clockworkmod), your initial install will break and you'll need to sbf if you can't get back into clockwork.
Also, bluremailengine is needed for blurcalendar to work properly. I remove bluremail, all the third party crap, all the social crap, swipe, and various other things I don't use like universal inbox, widgets, etc. Really, you just need to play with it.

Yea I know about those threads (I have one open right now actually) but since this is a whole new version of Blur & version of Android w/ a lot of changes & new options...who knows what Motorola changed or buried deeper into the system.
Thanks for being the guinea pig though I've never had a reason to use factory reset after a ROM is installed so removing BA & Blur Home isn't a big deal.
One question...have you removed the Messaging & Text Messaging apps at all? I still can't figure out what it was that caused the Text Messaging app to quit on me as soon as it was opened. Not that it's a big deal...b/c ChompSMS worked fine for me
Does anyone else notice a SEVERE amount of lag immediately after you reboot the phone? Lasts about 3-4 minutes every time I reboot then goes away. Affects everything from changing home screens, to opening apps, even turning the ringer volume up and down lags...

That's always been a problem with MotoBlur (and even HTC Sense)...it's all the services that load in the background all at once (even after freezing or removing some services.)

I removed all the messaging crap except the default messaging app (conversations.apk). I use Google Voice so I don't use the default app, but I sent myself a message using it and it worked just fine.
Note: you can do a data wipe/factory reset from within clockwork and you'll be fine.
If someone can produce a list of everything in /system/app (well, just the .apks would do), I can mark the ones I've successfully removed without problems.
Ditto to that...I'd be happy to contribute what I've frozen.

Mine takes about 10-15 seconds from the appearance of the homescreen until it's at full speed. Of course, I've overclocked to 1.2 GHz, debloated, zipaligned, implemented drod's rubix tweaks, and used autostarts to kill unnecessary apps from loading at boot.

Hmm. 10-15 seconds seems a tad excessive then. I'm still running stock speed, LPP 0.8.4.1, debloated most major apps and also used Autostarts to kill some apps at boot (as well as in the Widgets menu)...and while I see a slight lag it's not 10-15 seconds.

You're right. I just timed it. About 38 seconds from red M to full appearance of desktop (I've got the boot animation disabled) and about 25 seconds from full desktop to all widgets loaded and ready to go. I underestimated by 40-60%! I'm using the blur launcher, btw.
Something must be wrong with mine then...because mine lasts a good 3 to 4 minutes...and that seems very long for services to be starting...

Galaxy Tab P-1010 WiFy only

If you are frustrated with Samsungs total lack of support for this new device let me share with you some solutions that will make you change your mind about how you feel about your new Galaxy Tab WiFy only.
First; Root it!!!
Download the z4Root App and do it with one click........painless and you are set free and on your way.
Second; Download One Click Lag Fix from the Market ,
this is a magical app for this Galaxy Tab , it unlocks its full potential. Thank you Ryan!!! Give him a raise please!
Just make sure BEFORE you run the app move ALL of your apps from the SD Card and place them back on your device, you can move them back to the SD Card after you run the app if you like. If you try and run this app with apps on the SD Card you will send your device into a boot loop so please make note of this.
Result; Snap and Speed Clocked 1900 on Quardrant, smooth scrolling and blazing speed browsing this has become a completely different device , I now love this Galaxy Tab and I am going to keep it!
Doesn't show in the market for me
one click lag fix app
if you search one click lag fix in the Market in comes up as RyanZA OCLF, this is the app you want for a very small price well worth it!
Could not find z4Root in the market but there should be a thread here in XDA or search it on your device and direct download the apk file
It's Wifi, not Wify.
you definitely do NOT need to pay for OCLF. it's widely available for free on the web.
also, i noticed no difference after OCLF (benchmarks don't mean **** for actual device usage), so I uninstalled it.

but to answear ur question directly when u install z4root and open the app it will say root,
if its already rooted u should see re-root or undo root..
Thanks
After rooting look for Skype to uninstall but not there. The issue is that if installed then uninstalled Skype seems to leave, based on other board comments, that residual Data file and thus can't be reinstalled. My understanding is that once rooted one can then locate that hidden file and delete it so can reinstall Skype but this doesn't seem to be the case, does it? I can't find that file.
When Temp rooted and restart z4Root it does offer an Re-root option so (now using V1.3) it has been rooted.
Perhaps there is a difference in rooting between Temp & Permanent but wouldn't think so
Appreciate your help
