i have always rooted and overclocked my androind phones. got a g2, and was not really happy with the stock performance. it seems like a lenghty rooting process so i wanted to ask before i did it.
1. how much happier are you with your G2 now overclocked and running custom rom? what ROM?
2. my hinge is kinda "soft" is yours?
3. my screen does not seem that responsive compared to other phones. yours?
im trying to like it

1) honestly it depends on what you do with your phone. if you use your phone as a 'phone,' then overclock does you no justice (ie messaging calls etc). If you do more than that, overclocking makes a huge difference. While the rooting process might seem lengthy to you, i'd say: do it!
2)my hinge is loose too but when i get off my arse and find a t5 torxdriver to open it up i'll put a new spring in and fix it (theres a tutorial thread on these forums regarding that)
3) i actually noticed with this phone that its grounded quite awkwardly. it doesnt respond if i place it down on certain materials and then touch it with only one finger. I have to hold the phone with one hand and touch with the other hand for completely accurate response (doesnt bother me cuz in real world situations i use both hands to hold a phone anyway)
despite its flaws, it does me a ton of justice! at least until some company releases a dualcore phone with a hardware keyboard, which i dont foresee happening anytime soon ; ;
Rooting is so simple with the G2. I did it all using the phone. Use the visionary temp root/g-free method.
I overclocked and the hinges got a hard on. Problem fixed

1. how much happier are you with your G2 now overclocked and running custom rom? what ROM?
Overclocked mine to 1.3GHz and is working great. Did get hit alittle on the battery side, but I then invested in a 1800mAh battery and it now has good stamina to last a day of full use. I have Virtuous 2.0.2 with the Advanced Kernel by RMK. Much better than having the stock ROM by far.
2. my hinge is kinda "soft" is yours?
Hinge is really a non-issue for me. Would I prefer it to be alittle stiffer? Sure, but this is how it was designed to function, alittle loose to have effortless opening and closing. Perhaps in the future I will perform the spring replacement, but it's really not a huge issue.
3. my screen does not seem that responsive compared to other phones. yours?
The only problem I have is dragging the notification bar down. There is usually a 1-3 second delay, but that is due to Sense running in the ROM I am using now. Other than that, no real issues with the screen. Definitely better than the Hero's screen!
The overclocking procedure might look long and intimidating (no 'that's what she said' quotes there!) but trust me, it's worth it. Whether it's through ADB or on the phone alone, it's really not that bad.

I read about bricked devices that used Visionary and most of them used the perm root option in Visionary. I only did a temp root and used g-free to perm root.

This is true yes. But when I first rooted my phone I didn't know the risks of using visionary, and was just using it for permanent root. Then when I was using the gfree method, I had to use permanent root though visionary to make it work for some reason. Now that I know the risks I doubt I would ever use visionary again

I do not really feel anything. It doesnt make going through screens smoother or anything overall if you handed me a stock and an overclocked g2 i would not know the difference without benching it.
I was scared to root my $200 (at the time) G2, But once i did a lot of doors opened up. I love getting rid of the bloatware and having a custom firmware is pretty nice too. I had to hold my breath the first time it booted with root enabled. as for over clocking i don't really use unless i am running emulators or games which isn't that much. I do under clock my CPU when the battery < 16% and when the screen is off seems to save a lot of battery life.

The CPU clocks down automatically when screen-off, so that's not really necessary. And hopefully your battery is always more than 6%.

It typical of the stock as well as CM. The CPU clocks up and down as needed, unless you tell it otherwise. For instance, I think the Performance governor clocks the CPU at maximum MHz all the time.

i recently started overclocking my phone and i've noticed a difference, i'm on temp root though
Temp rooted with visonary a while back. I got it just over 1400 and its very fast and the I can still squeeze out a lot of battery time thru the day. That and getting an average of over 9mbs down and 4 up at my apartment in austin tx rocks face.
Plus I think temp rooting is better so I can reboot if I need to warranty out the phone.

7.) ****ing bootlooping whenever i try jit or any jit rom
8.) Not supporting better porn sites
9.) Not printing money or making me an island and flying me there.

Yeah, normally one throws away the box (or stores it, in case they might want to return the gadget) and plays with the device. All the boxes I ever got were slow and useless, though as far as boxes go, my A43it came in a pretty nice box... minimal packaging, good sized, well organized contents...
Sorry for the pun, it was irresistible.
Ok! So let me buy something I'm probably not gonna understand, look up forums on it, make a profile, then write a weird long broken English rant on how much I hate the box it came in...

And that plastic wrap that was on it. Just top notch. I found the opening and closing of the box very fast and streamlined.
And comparing to other boxes, it's large enough to hold decent sized items, but not so large that the box is cumbersome.
To show the holding capabilities, the box comes equipped with some sort of touchscreen.
I wasn't very interested in that though, so I just borke it and fired it in the bin.
The syrofoam though... I mean the workmanship is just fantastic. Straight lines, pointy edges. A+++
Also, what a nice touch it was that my box came packed IN A BOX! I mean, who would have thunk. A box to keep your brand new box in. Well done Archos. I tip my hat.
Well you shouldnt have bought it. I do agree outta the box this thing can be sluggish but after polishing and updating it, it can be a unique tablet. I am really satisfied with it. It can do most of it and you may need to know how to manage apps.

And one thing, beware the application that run as services. It could eat your RAM and makes your Archos totally lag.

Would you see any problem with me using the international version of the Note without rooting or using custom ROMs? Are there any annoyances you're experiencing with the stock ROM? Will Samsung actually update this device for atleast a year? My U.S. Samsung devices never got updates, but that might've been mostly the carrier's fault
Unrooted note?
I haven't rooted my note yet, and I don't have any complaints. To be honest, I really don't see a reason to root it, at least not until a functional ICS ROM is available for it. As for the updates, the main update we're looking for is ICS which I'm hearing may not be available until April though.
Ive not rooted my international Note either.
Love it!

I've rooted mine only... but to be honest I only did it out of habit.
I don't think I've actually used root for anything and will only use it to install ICS if CM9 hits before the samsung release.
I'm only rooted. Nothing more.

I'm just rooted and CWM'd... Until either a semi-stable full featured CM7 port comes out, or even better, a CM9 port, I can tough it out waiting. One thing is for sure though.
I WILL GET TOUCHWIZ OFF THIS DEVICE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
It's slow, it's laggy, the home button takes a CRIMINALLY long time to return to my homescreen from just about every app... it's the worst.
Samsung Galaxy NoteNexus. That'll do =)
Same here , didn't root it yet and loving it but would definitely would root it to tell the difference in two....
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I haven't rooted it yet. I see no point. I used to root for taking snapshot in previous Androids. With GS2, I rooted to install few custom fonts. The only reason if I will ever need to root Note would be to install AdFree but screen is so big I don't mind few space taken away by ad and morally if I am using free version, developer should earn something from ads.
I didn't find a reason to root it either,I usually do it to install the Armenian fonts but the GNote came already installed.
The unit I have is fast and no lags so no worries in that front either.
I have rooted neither. I would only consider when stop getting OS upgrade. I will wait for ICS till then have enough to enjoy.

I agree, that lag sucks!
The lag is caused by voice control. Voice control is activated by pressing the home button twice, so when you hit it once the phone waits awhile to see if you're going to hit it again.
I rooted though I told myself not to...I'm just hooked to it!
Seriously, I like freezing the bloatware and deleting stuff that take up unncessary space and also cause my phone to slow down. With ICS, I believe one can just delete the apps without rooting, which will be great.
Based on my experience with the Galaxy S and S2, ROMs are just not worth the effort for me, except for the very lightweight ones that are deodexed and not much more.
I believe you can use the phone unrooted, unless you have itchy fingers like me.
I am Rooted, as you know second most reading thread 'How to Root' i hav wrote, n i cant stop myself unrooted. But really i can say some must things you can define 'need' are such
- To use Titanium Backup(really itz boring jobe to restore all application n setting withot it)
- If your place dont support Google Navigation
- Use set CPU (really battery sucks without this
- N atleast for me 'Root call blocker'
More thn this i dont think any must use for root.
Even myself have wrote thread how to, but i hav not pushed CF root till to my device
Incidentally if you use the superoneclick method of rooting there is an "unroot" feature built in as well.

Freezing voice control gets rid of the home button lag, good advice!!

Dr Ketan,
Can you please elaborate on the following points:
1. "If your place dont support Google Navigation"
How does rooting your phone help getting Google Navigation to work? Navigation does not work in my area, so would be good if you could share some tips.
2. "Use set CPU (really battery sucks without this)"
Are you under clocking the CPU in order to get better battery life? Can you give more details on this? Won't this make the phone more laggy?

Would you see any problem with me using the international version of the Note without rooting or using custom ROMs? Are there any annoyances you're experiencing with the stock ROM? Will Samsung actually update this device for atleast a year? My U.S. Samsung devices never got updates, but that might've been mostly the carrier's fault

I've rooted mine, but have not loaded a custom ROM. The main reason for rooting is for running ClockSync, Titanium Backup Pro and Theft Aware (now Avast).
Rooted.
So I can use Chainfire 3D for a night mode.

I understand there is a method by loading a modified Google Maps / Navigation APK that removes the unsupported location message. I had a brief look at the process and seemes a little complicated and I just use NDrive.

No. I was very skeptical at first about this, but I have run SetCPU on my Galaxy SII to test and performance was great and it seemed that battery life was also no problem. I installed SetCPU on my Note soon after I rooted it and have felt no performance decrease. SetCPU has a "ondemand" setting, this will change the speed of the CPU according to the needs of the apps running. Much like the SpeedStep technology found in laptops.
SetCPU has a nice info display and it shows the "Time in State" from this you can see what time your CPU is spending at each MHz increment. It stands to reason if 80% of the time the CPU is running at 200 MHz it's using less than running at 1400 MHz.
I've included a screen cap of the Time in State display from my note.

Yes sure i will guide, how you can activate google navigation in india
First Download this
Now you have req Root, and Root explorer app, b'coz you have to remove maps.apk app from Sys/apk directory, and replaced with above said application.
Anyway there is still one method, which doesn't require root, but you wil get double icon each fr lattitude, map, navigation etc(with minor difference)
if you need navigation in india then you can use that modified version of map. I mean new modified version which allow you to use navigation will install along with original map.
for this download this, and simply install like other application.
Now regarding Set CPU, i think somone hav already answered n explined nicely.
After installing SEtCPU, you will get control over CPU speed(directly affect battery performance)
e.g. If you add profile when screen is off, CPU set to 500 mH. then definetely your battery drain diminished < 1%/hr in idle state(screen off) compare to > 2 % with 3G n Data on idle state
There won't be lag issue b'coz you are under clocking in off screen state only.
So.. I'm sure some of you have seen me *****ing about my battery life. Well 2 days ago I moved back into my mothers. Where she lives, sprint is pretty weak. So for 3 days I've had basically 0 web access. No 4g at all and 1 bar of 3g. I thought this was normal. I had a job interview today at home depot and couldn't make a phone call for about 2 hours. Or send a message or even get 3g service. So I decided tto flash back to gingerbread tonsee of that helped. It did. I was able to make phone calls and messages and even have 3g service inside the home depot. Which I couldn't do with ICS installed. So unjust thought it was a tower being worked with. I just got home. And to my surprise I have a stable 3g connection. No longer do I have to walk out the door just to have 1 bar of 3g. Im sitting in my living room right now and I'm on Facebook, doing some web browsing and obviously posting on xda which was IMPOSSIBLE last night.
Google, there is something really wrong with ICS. Please.. for the love of god figure out why ICS has bad signal really reception compared to GB.

not sure what the exact background to all of this is, but did your radio change between the two ROMs?
Yes I did. I tried all 4. Switched kernels left and right. Flashed roms left and right and always got the same result. If I hop back on gbread my battery goes 16+ hours with great reception. ICS gives me horrendous battery life.

Ill post what I get on gbread. And tomorrow ill flash cm9 with the kl2 radio and ill show you what I'm talking about.

I pretty much agree with you, I had serious battery problem with my i9020t with ICS, battery would not last 6hours. Flashed GB and its all good and so much faster.
But either Google or Samsung isn't really prioritizing on these phones, which is sad given its not yet more than 2 years old. I hope this is not the case and they spend time sorting out ICS. So far ICS haven't amaze me in anyways though, I just want a light and fast OS with good battery, GB is doing that right now, not an overly expensive quadcore phone with poorer battery life and only marginally faster.

Haha I'm sorry man lol I didn't mean to say you, but I'm sure at some point some dolt will come in here and call me an idiot and tell me I'm doing something wrong. Sorry it seemed I was implying that. Anyhoo this might be the reason its taking so long for us to get our ota. I don't think half of you will notice it because of your sitting in a position with a good signal your phones wont struggle as much. But to me it "feels" like theres a -10 dbm deficit in signal strenth. Right now I'm at -96dbm and I have 3g access in my living room. Flash ics and the only way ill get an ounce of data is if I step outside. And even then I only get a measly 1x.

I'm really torn between what we know about the G2 and the updates on the Nexus devices.
I'm coming from an Atrix, which was crapped on by Motorola, so I don't want get stuck on another device without updates or plenty of custom roms.
I don't think the Nexus 5 will be as good specs wise as the G2, but it will likely have more custom roms.
If you have the G2 now, how happy are you with it?
Do you feel there is a decent community building around the G2?
I can get an LG G2 from O2 in the UK for £10, and £22 a month, which may be cheaper than getting a Nexus 5 on contract.

I am having the same thoughts too.
Bigger screen and battery, better camera.
But I would only want paranoid rom on my phone. Pie is the best for no hw buttons.
I can only hope when n5 comes out, the source will greatly help in g2 aosp roms
I think nexus devices have more aosp Roms. But devices with vendor overlays typically have a better variety of roms. Though the aosp run smoother in nexus devices. Cm is looking very promising for the g2.

I don't even understand all these talks comparing the Nexus 5 to the LG G2.
There is one thing which is much more important than all other factors: While both don't have replaceable battery, the G2 has a 3000mah battery, while the Nexus 5 has a 2300mah battery. All other differences are negligible (Stock android or not, KitKat or 4.2.2, etc.).
Once the battery is at 0%, your phone becomes nothing but a paperweight, and this is going to happen much much (much) sooner with the Nexus 5.
I just picked up the LG G2, Its a beast.

I'm not comparing, they're just the two phones I keep thinking about. I agree that the battery is a good draw, but as long as I can get from 7am to 10pm on light/medium usage I'll be happy.
I think the big issue with the Atrix updates was Nvidia, and with the N5 and G2 having similar hardware and also coming from LG, I would hope there was some transfer, similar to N1 and the HTC Desire.
I've seen reviews moaning about LG's software overlay, but people here sound happy enough, and with CM 10.1 I'm hopefully other custom Rome will follow.
I think I'm talking myself into it!

On "light" use, maybe. On moderate use - hard to believe.
With the Nexus 5 and anything over light use, you're going to become an "electricity outlet zombie".

The problem I always have with people who base their opinions off of others is that they don't think for themselves and assume whatever people tell them is the holy truth. Go to the store and try the LG g2 yourself and decide if the LG skin is really that bad. I have tried the LG skin and I don't have major issues with it but only minor issues with the notification bar.

See that's the thing. Many reviewers just can't find anything wrong with the G2 that they will write as much as possible about their own personal whims, like this guy who takes all his strength to slam the phone as hard as he can, especially on the software part http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013...-gets-caught-living-in-the-shadows-of-giants/
I'm pretty sure the majority of people don't think LG UI is that bad. Even if the drawer is cluttered, just root and flash the verizon-esque notifications mod. It's not that hard.

LG UI is actually pretty good, it's smooth and functional. It may seem a bit too much for some people but for average users it is actually quite nice.
G2 bro. Why get a watered down "Value G2" with empty stock? The fact you have to root it to like it defeats the purpose alone. Buy the phone that works out the box. G2 is my dream phone. I'm done with boring stock. I need features and battery.

I haven't seen one in the stores yet, and I've been in a few last Friday. Hopefully I'll find one today. Everyone seems enthusiastic, and there seems to be more activity in the forums, which gives me hope.
Is the UK variant the same as an existing model in the dev forum?
My other thought was that if i'm not happy I can always sell it and get the same amount of money as I would in need to buy the N5 outright.

It was between the g2 - note 3 - nexus 5 and I after much hands on testing and research I am fully confident that my choice in getting the g2 was a good one. Had it for 2 weeks and am loving it. The lg ui isn't bad at all and the features the stock rom offers are pretty good. I prefer double tapping the screen to turn on/off over to pressing a physical button, not just on this phone but any phone. Best battery life of any phone I've ever used, feels like ur using an extended battery. And the phone is slick with no hiccups. Go g2. Or wait for the galaxy s5.

This G2 is by far the best phone I have owned. I'm still in awe that I can get 26 hours of battery life and still be at 10%.
The UI is fine by me in all aspects. Feels like stock but with some nice touches added. Love this phone and glad they had the Keep Your Unlimited Weekend!

What features are particularly desirable in the Custom Roms?
It seems easy enough to replace the Launcher and very heavily de-bloat the System.
The CPU is already fast enough to negate minor speed tweaks, although they're still possible.
You can already do per app DPI/resolution changes.
I appreciate custom roms as much as the next guy, but it seems to me that once you've changed the launcher, hidden the soft keys (Auto Hide Soft Keys) and changed the DPI, there's little stock (LG) left that's obtrusive.
Most of the stock tweaks are minimal:
QSlide floating apps are useful, but unobtrusive if you don't need it.
Tap on/off is actually useful.
It could really do with OpenMic like the Motorola.
To me I can't see how much we're losing or gaining on the custom roms, and it seems inevitable that they'll arrive soon enough anyway. CleanRoms are already out.
I've remapped the back button keys to give me a dedicated menu and back button. Although frankly, I almost never use the hardware buttons.
It's a great piece of hardware, but strongly recommend the 32GB variant.

If I get a G2 in the UK, what development thread should I be following, as there are three custom forums and a generic development thread. I've learned from my works G S3 that there are different versions and you have to follow the correct version.
I've been out and played with one in the shop, and played with a dummy phone, and it feels nice.
EDIT: Just placed my order, and hope to have it tomorrow!!
I hope to be become a valid member of the G2 community, and will try to help test etc where needed.
