[Q] MR4 EC05 system update - Epic 4G General

Hello,
My phone is stock rom etc, i have done nothing to it except i rooted it so i could use wireless tether.
I received the notification for "MR4 EC05 system update" a few days ago, however, when i try to install, the phone reboots etc, and then it gives me like a red " ! " saying the update failed.
Why is this? Is it because im rooted? How could i get to install this? I no longer care for root or tethering.
Appreciate any help,
Thanks.

It's because you're rooted...
Use this thread with the EB13 File then when it boots you'll get the message for the EC05 update and it should work...

Thanks,
Which thread?

When you rooted it removed the Asphalt demo which is one of the apps that is needed to determine if you are "stock."
Flash back to completely stock, download the update and root again, or if you are familiar with odin, you can just flash EC05 pre-rooted and deodexed:

If you need a visual I made a how to use odin video. Check out the videos in my signature.

[Q] Will DG17 prevent Froyo?

Cliff Notes, i saw this thread on the update to DG27, but I need to know if there is a short cut to get to the newest build or if Froyo will be unable to get without the playing catch up
I did some searching, but if you can forward any information there is about this, that would be helpful and a moderator can delete this...
I looked today at my gf/s epic and noticed she was on build version DG17, and from what I understand, this is old. I cannot find anything on the sprint website found here, so I took er to the sprint store for an update, and all these dolts kept saying is Froyo is not out yet, you need to wait, not listening to anything I was actually saying. After they began to listen they said she is literally stuck, SOL with the version she has until Froyo is released for her device, and that Sprint and Samsung have no updates for her device. Furthermore, whenever I check for an update on her device it always says it is up to date. So, after getting annoyed I came here for help.
I did read somewhere on this forum that being on the older build version causes issues with future updates. If this is true, will she be able to get Froyo if it ever comes out, and is it a good idea to to the updates in between (S:D700.0.5S.DG27 8/30/2010, S:D700.05S.DI07 9/16/2010, S:D700.05S.DI18 9/30/2010, etc), and, if it is possible to manually update the Epic, how does one do it? Once the morons at the sprint store started listening they said There was nothing I can do but wait for Froyo, but I did not instill much trust in them.
Thanks,
Carl
P.S. Please don't flame me, I know very little about the Epic and even less about working with it, but I am capable of doing the update, with your help, of course.
Here use this. Use Odin to go to di18 which is where she needs to be to get froyo ota. Unless you want the leak which works great for me it's dk28. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794138. Yeah for some reason you are still on the launch day software. You are 3 updates behind. Use that link to dl Odin and download whichever rom you want dk28 for 2.2 or di18 for 2.1 and use Odin to flash. You will wipe all data and it will be like getting a brand new phone. Just follow the instructions exactly how they are written. Good luck.
you can update your epic regardless of what version you're on to the current official build (DI18) which is "Eclair" and fixes many of the original issues with the phone. You you can also go straight to an update to the newest unofficial build (DK28) "Froyo" but this will make you unable to receive the official Froyo OTA update. But take note that the OTA update is not important as the developers on this site will most definitely provide superior alternatives to updating to Froyo when the OTA update eventually does become available (it has been delayed yet again).
THIS WILL DELETE ALL THE DATA ON YOUR PHONE
*Assuming that you want to return to the current official build used by sprint which is at this moment DI18*
*Only use main/direct-to-motherboard USB slot on PC (not on the face of your PC)*
*Only use high quality USB cable shorter than 3' and not the stock cable*
*Make sure SAMSUNG USB drivers are Installed*
*Make sure your battery is more than 50% charged*
1. SD Card is REMOVED, USB is UNPLUGGED and Battery is REMOVED from phone
2. While Phone is UNPLUGGED from USB, place battery in phone
3. Press and Hold the "1" key and Power button together to reach Download Mode
*KEEP USB UNPLUGGED FROM PHONE and phone in Download Mode*
4. Extract and Run Odin3.exe (Ignore the .pit file included in Odin3+v1.61andepic.pit.zip)
*Leave the "PIT" selection empty*
5. In Odin Uncheck "F. Reset Time", make sure "Auto Reboot" is the only box checked
6. In Odin click PDA and select your .Md5 file (SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5)
7. Plug USB in PHONE and wait for yellow COM box highlight to appear in Odin
8. In Odin Press Start and WAIT patiently
Download SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 from the link on the first page of this thread where it says DI18 Update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794138
Download Odin from the link on the Wiki --look for "Odin3+v1.61andepic.pit.zip" under where it says "Odin Stock Flashing" at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki...Stock_Flashing
Download Samsung USB drivers from the link on the first post of this thread:

so either way she cannot get it re sync'd back to do it on its own? is that what I'm gathering? I hope that is untrue. And either option she has to wipe her phone? The people at sprint said wait for Froyo but she needs to get to DI18? This is all a bit confusing.

Without DI18, you won't be able to get the OTA for DL11, which is final froyo. You will have to use odin, and yes it will wipe the phone. Just backup contacts to your Google account and use Titanium Backup for the apps.

This isn't entirely true.
There will be an update for DI18 -> DL** out soon-ish. However, an update from DG27 and whatever the other one is will be available *eventually*. How long eventually is unknown and could be forever.
I thought there was a di18 update zip floating around here that he can flash threw the stock recovery?
What I suggest is root the phone in question and install clockwork mod recovery. One cwm is installed you can make a nandriod back up. Use odin and the di18 tar to get to di18. Root and install cwm again. Restore tory back up with selecting data only. Now your up to date with apk your data. You are also rooted and have cwm installed and you won't be blocked from an ota unless you start flashing custom roms and removing stock apps
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
You can have her phone on di18 in five mins. Them it would take her no mre than ten mins to set it back up. All her contacts are saved and all she has to do is reinstall her apps. It doesn't take that long. Plus the update to di18 update takes the upload cap off.

Very true, eventually being the key word lol. If you do want the OTA right off the bat though, DI18 is the way to go. Mystery, I thought I saw that floating around as well, I just worry about the Modem.bin being flashable in clockwork; as of yet I don't know if anyone has been able to accomplish that. But with Koush's help it could be possible.

Isn't DG17 to di18 just a firmware update? You only click android update in the settings when going from android 2.1 to 2.2 (software update). I don't think he needs to go to the trouble of using odin.... I could be wrong but its give that a try if you haven't already.

Will DG17 prevent Froyo? At this point you first need to worry about Sprint and Samsung preventing Foyo and at the moment they are doing a very good job.

please help. LOL. I Wonder if it is something sprint can handle once froyo is the standard for the epic and i show them she does not have it, can they just push it on to it? If not, i'd love to have instructions or something from you, please
Update. So after the rumors of the upcoming froyo release, can sprint push it when the device does not get the triggered update? Or can the morons at the sprint store do this?

How To Remove Superuser and CWM?

I thought about rooting, and started the process with the one click mod about a month ago. I got the superuser app in the process. Never went any further. Now I am trying to download the official froyo (which is technically on hold), but it aborts everytime. I am wondering if the superuser or CWM is causing this. I have done a wipe/factory reset three times. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'd suggest updating by using the official Samsung update on their web site, which you can run from a PC. It seems to provide a much more trouble free update. It will also totally wipe your phone (but not the SD card) so be sure you have a way to restore your data.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D700ZKASPR
Assuming you have a PC, click on the software link, then click on the EXE link for the EB13 update. Install on your PC and follow the directions.
odin back to stock, use eb13 in the pda slot you will have a stock updated phone
i would also advise against updating ota because it's my understanding that it was problems with the ota process that caused sprint to pull the plug. it's really hard to adequately stress how simple using the samsung exe is. if you can turn on a computer you can have a fresh installation of eb13 froyo
wait for the actual fixed release from either sprint or samsung and use either the samsung tool or odin to do a clean install.
I have 2 Epics, one stock, one rooted and rommed. I ran the Samsung .exe
and it caused nothing but troubles on the stock, so had to return to 2.1.
To do so, either go to Service Center or run Odin.
This will also work to unroot and return to stock. The easiest instructions I have found to follow are on Android Central under Epic Forums. Look in Roms and Rooting Section in stickies. Title is something like unbrick. It gives all the links for downloads and how to's. You must be registered to use
but it is less techy there so might be easier to follow.
Thanks, everybody. I just finished the update via the samsung site. Phone just came back online. I will start messing around with it and see how everything worked out. Thanks again!

Super fast with the vids as always! Thanks!
Oh...and first!
Has anyone experienced the boot loop issue like the last manual update to 22? I had to wipe my phone to fix...
Not sent from my Sprint Galaxy Nexus
If you did did the GPS Fix (assuming you're on stock BML EI22), then you will need to replace the system/vendor/bin/gpsd file or else you will get an Error Status 7 when you try to do the update. You can extract the file from the EI22.zip (If someone can post the file and host it, even better).
I haven't tested the GPS after updating so I don't know if the new gpsd file fixes anything or reverts things back to what they were (ie locking on only 3 or 4 sats). If it has reverted it back, then you will probably have to re-run the GPS Fix again.
i got an error "verifying the script(?)" i forgot the complete error message when i tried to install it from stock ei22 and stock recovery.
Do you think it has to do with the fact that I downloaded within the phone's webbrowser, and renamed it in ES explorer within the phone?
I have trouble mounting my phone to my computer, so i either have to download files to my phone directly from within its own webbrowser, or take the sd card out and mount that seperatly.
@qbking77: you don't need to rename the update file to update.zip since the GB roms the stock reccovery allows you to choose what zip to use.
For me I copied both updates to my card as update.zip, EI22 and update-EL30.zip then I:
1- ODIN'd to EC05
2- shutdown
3- 3 finger salute
4- flashed update.zip (EI22)
5- shutdown
6- 3 finger salute
7- flashed update-EL30.zip
After that I:
A- copied the su.zip that removes the reinstall of stock recovery,
B- ODIN'd cwm 3 but unchecked reboot.
C- pulled battery
D- 3 finger salute
E- flashed the aboved mentioned su.zip
F- flashed cwm5
G- rebooted
That left me with a stock kernel with root and custom recovery. Made a NANDROID and have been tinkering with it.
Right now I'm tring to get CRT-OFF to work.

Even if you're using a stock rom I don't see much benefit in upgrading. GPS was still broken for me and they changed/removed things I liked in the older stock roms (ie: incoming call screen, the alarm screen [took me a while to figure out how to snooze this morning which meant I got to work on time ;-)], the scrolling wallpaper). All minor things but I didn't have any issues with EI22 so...

2.2.2 update not installing.

I'm trying to update to 2.2.2, I downloaded and installed the first update, and I can successfully download the froyo update, but it won't go all the way through. It will finish downloading, prompt me to install, then power down to install, but when it installs it gets to about 35%, then shows the triangle with the ! In it and reboots. I'm rooted with stock everything, and have system reset twice hoping it would work. No luck.
Is anyone else having similar problems?

Your problem is probably due to the current ROM you're using has removed some of the bloatware. When you remove bloatware you are unable to update your phone.

Actually I'm not running a custom ROM. Literally all I've done was run a root tool, then installed Titanium Backup Free.
I'm going to try and re-image the phone using the stock DL17 but I'm not sure how. I've got the instructions for installing the rooted EC09 ROM but I don't think I'm supposed to use the I500.PIT? Is that specific to EC09, or is it specific to the phone model (and independent of ROM)?
UPDATE: I just realized there's a DL17 .PIT so nevermind! I'll be sure to use that.

If you do take it there is quite a hassle getting it back to be rootable but if you must? You will need the latest version of rsdlite the desired sbf .602 or .605 which will revert it back to stock then you can take the OTA. My guess is somewhere along the way you froze or uninstalled some of the preinstalled bloatware? Which can cause the update to fail this was my case at least I sbfed to. 602 then took 2 OTA'S to .621 unfortunatley I regreted it you may want to look around at method to freeze updater instead your rooted try a different rom or 2 before making the decision

RootzWiki is the best place to find roms.
You can make complete backups in ClockworkMod Recovery of your entire rom. I would use MyBackup Root to backup things like individual apps, data, SMS, etc.

I have a droid x that is rooted and has the hack so I can wirelessly tether. I used the voodoo ota root keeper to try and keep my root. When I try to install the update it fails. I also have clockworkmod recovery installed. Any suggestions?

I also had the same failure, it was due to my having removed some of the bloatware. I loaded the 605 SBF file and rooted this installed al the root programs i would need along with voodoo ota and made a root backup, ran all my programs and did the update, all went ell and I was able to renew root with voodoo ota keeper. so far i have had no problems and am on the 621 update and fully rooted. Titanium backup works fine and I have been able to remove the bloatware.
Hope this helps and i am not too late.
From what every been saying, don't upgrade to 621. Just flash a custom rom right now since you are rooted and you can sbf back to 602 or 605 as needed.
I have 2 Droid X and both running CM7 and its awesome. I tried MIUI and Gummy but couldn't get into it.
4.5.621 install failure
Greetings. This looks like the right thread for this issue, but if not, please redirect me.
Some background:
DroidX
Android version 2.3.3
System version 4.5.605.MB810.en.US
currently rooted
Being a laggard, I did not accept the 621 update when first offered through OTA. My 4.5.605 DroidX was rooted and I'd read that I'd have to either unroot or "hide" root in some manner. It seemed like a bit of trouble and I had other life issues at the time.
After things cleared, I contacted VZ and they pushed the upgrade again. After "unrooting", I accepted the OTA upgrade, but each installation attempt failed after a successful download. No other diagnostics, just "the update failed". I tried this multiple times after reboots, battery removal, cache clearing and such. I then did a factory reset and tried again - still the same sequence, successful download, install now, update failed.
So I called VZ and Moto. They suggested accepting the update while attached to a solid WiFi. All the same tricks were turned as with the OTA (another factory reset, clear cache, remove/replace battery) only these attempts used the WiFi (excellent signal). Same failure.
Moto then suggested I ship in the unit and for $110 they would handle it. Right.
So I found Blur_Version.4.5.621.MB810.Verizon.en.US.zip, downloaded it to the SD card and attempted to install using the recovery mode menu. This also fails but at least offers up the message: assert failed apply_patch ("system/app/AccountAndSyncSettings, apk", "-" then some odd number letter sequences followed by "error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip status 7.
I've since rerooted just out of curiosity to see if that would still work.
All this to fix the irritating bug of the phone powering back on by itself.
Any hints or advice?
Thanks.
-Joe
Sending your device in is not necessary at all.
It seems that you have removed one of the systems stock apps. Replace any apps that you may have removed and attempt to take the update again.
Or, you can SBF back to 602 and take the OTA update to .621. Just be sure to back up everything that you need (not including app data).

missteps
Bloatware was renamed but I've been pretty careful not to delete anything... even kept a list of what was renamed and to what. All that has been rolled back but clearly something was missed. The only thing that threw me a curve was the symlink on the Madden Football app, but even that now looks pre-modified.
I take it that changes to ACLs would also glitch the update, but what about file timestamps? How pristine do these stock apps have to be?
I'll check them again since there's little to lose in doing so. If I can't find a discrepancy, the sbf to 602 will be the next step.
Ironically, the reason for embarking on the bloat removal at the outset was to cure the auto-power on bug, which is now supposedly fixed in 621.
But it's all about the learning.
Thanks again.

Download RSD Lite, i think the latest revision is 5.7. then download the 621 sbf, any necessary drivers, and it also helps to have the fastboot/adb package as well (even though fastboot is useless for us, still something good to have).
backup anything you need backed up or do a nandroid. reboot to bootloader. connect device to computer. start up RSD Lite. click show device. click the button that lets you browse for files. select 621 sbf. click start. sit back and let it do its thing and you'll be back up and running in no time
Links files and instruction on how to flash a sbf, are in my list

621 isn't all bad. It's easy enough to root it now with an apk called Framaroot and you will then have all the latest security updates from Motorola. If you do go with 621 you are then"stuck" there as it is not possible to go back to any earlier versions. Most of the most recently updated Roms work fine with it.
