Cliff Notes, i saw this thread on the update to DG27, but I need to know if there is a short cut to get to the newest build or if Froyo will be unable to get without the playing catch up
I did some searching, but if you can forward any information there is about this, that would be helpful and a moderator can delete this...
I looked today at my gf/s epic and noticed she was on build version DG17, and from what I understand, this is old. I cannot find anything on the sprint website found here, so I took er to the sprint store for an update, and all these dolts kept saying is Froyo is not out yet, you need to wait, not listening to anything I was actually saying. After they began to listen they said she is literally stuck, SOL with the version she has until Froyo is released for her device, and that Sprint and Samsung have no updates for her device. Furthermore, whenever I check for an update on her device it always says it is up to date. So, after getting annoyed I came here for help.
I did read somewhere on this forum that being on the older build version causes issues with future updates. If this is true, will she be able to get Froyo if it ever comes out, and is it a good idea to to the updates in between (S:D700.0.5S.DG27 8/30/2010, S:D700.05S.DI07 9/16/2010, S:D700.05S.DI18 9/30/2010, etc), and, if it is possible to manually update the Epic, how does one do it? Once the morons at the sprint store started listening they said There was nothing I can do but wait for Froyo, but I did not instill much trust in them.
Thanks,
Carl
P.S. Please don't flame me, I know very little about the Epic and even less about working with it, but I am capable of doing the update, with your help, of course.
Here use this. Use Odin to go to di18 which is where she needs to be to get froyo ota. Unless you want the leak which works great for me it's dk28. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794138. Yeah for some reason you are still on the launch day software. You are 3 updates behind. Use that link to dl Odin and download whichever rom you want dk28 for 2.2 or di18 for 2.1 and use Odin to flash. You will wipe all data and it will be like getting a brand new phone. Just follow the instructions exactly how they are written. Good luck.
you can update your epic regardless of what version you're on to the current official build (DI18) which is "Eclair" and fixes many of the original issues with the phone. You you can also go straight to an update to the newest unofficial build (DK28) "Froyo" but this will make you unable to receive the official Froyo OTA update. But take note that the OTA update is not important as the developers on this site will most definitely provide superior alternatives to updating to Froyo when the OTA update eventually does become available (it has been delayed yet again).
THIS WILL DELETE ALL THE DATA ON YOUR PHONE
*Assuming that you want to return to the current official build used by sprint which is at this moment DI18*
*Only use main/direct-to-motherboard USB slot on PC (not on the face of your PC)*
*Only use high quality USB cable shorter than 3' and not the stock cable*
*Make sure SAMSUNG USB drivers are Installed*
*Make sure your battery is more than 50% charged*
1. SD Card is REMOVED, USB is UNPLUGGED and Battery is REMOVED from phone
2. While Phone is UNPLUGGED from USB, place battery in phone
3. Press and Hold the "1" key and Power button together to reach Download Mode
*KEEP USB UNPLUGGED FROM PHONE and phone in Download Mode*
4. Extract and Run Odin3.exe (Ignore the .pit file included in Odin3+v1.61andepic.pit.zip)
*Leave the "PIT" selection empty*
5. In Odin Uncheck "F. Reset Time", make sure "Auto Reboot" is the only box checked
6. In Odin click PDA and select your .Md5 file (SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5)
7. Plug USB in PHONE and wait for yellow COM box highlight to appear in Odin
8. In Odin Press Start and WAIT patiently
Download SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 from the link on the first page of this thread where it says DI18 Update:

so either way she cannot get it re sync'd back to do it on its own? is that what I'm gathering? I hope that is untrue. And either option she has to wipe her phone? The people at sprint said wait for Froyo but she needs to get to DI18? This is all a bit confusing.

Without DI18, you won't be able to get the OTA for DL11, which is final froyo. You will have to use odin, and yes it will wipe the phone. Just backup contacts to your Google account and use Titanium Backup for the apps.

This isn't entirely true.
There will be an update for DI18 -> DL** out soon-ish. However, an update from DG27 and whatever the other one is will be available *eventually*. How long eventually is unknown and could be forever.
I thought there was a di18 update zip floating around here that he can flash threw the stock recovery?
What I suggest is root the phone in question and install clockwork mod recovery. One cwm is installed you can make a nandriod back up. Use odin and the di18 tar to get to di18. Root and install cwm again. Restore tory back up with selecting data only. Now your up to date with apk your data. You are also rooted and have cwm installed and you won't be blocked from an ota unless you start flashing custom roms and removing stock apps

You can have her phone on di18 in five mins. Them it would take her no mre than ten mins to set it back up. All her contacts are saved and all she has to do is reinstall her apps. It doesn't take that long. Plus the update to di18 update takes the upload cap off.

Very true, eventually being the key word lol. If you do want the OTA right off the bat though, DI18 is the way to go. Mystery, I thought I saw that floating around as well, I just worry about the Modem.bin being flashable in clockwork; as of yet I don't know if anyone has been able to accomplish that. But with Koush's help it could be possible.

Isn't DG17 to di18 just a firmware update? You only click android update in the settings when going from android 2.1 to 2.2 (software update). I don't think he needs to go to the trouble of using odin.... I could be wrong but its give that a try if you haven't already.

Will DG17 prevent Froyo? At this point you first need to worry about Sprint and Samsung preventing Foyo and at the moment they are doing a very good job.

please help. LOL. I Wonder if it is something sprint can handle once froyo is the standard for the epic and i show them she does not have it, can they just push it on to it? If not, i'd love to have instructions or something from you, please
Update. So after the rumors of the upcoming froyo release, can sprint push it when the device does not get the triggered update? Or can the morons at the sprint store do this?

Yeah i haven't had no problems with it,but you would be better of turning off the phone and doing it.Reason for that is,if you pull out sdcard while Clockwork recovery, put some files on sdcard and put it back in-Clockwork will not see those files unless you reboot the phone into Clockwork. So yeah, you can pull out sdcard while in Clockwork but you will still need to power off the phone for Clockwork to see new files.

I've tried all of the ones up on this forum and they all go right to the call log when you press the button on the headphones that came with the phone. I tried using the ones that came from my Palm Pre but that didn't work either. One click goes to call log (always), 2nd click calls the top number in your call log. Long press does voice command. Doesn't matter if you have the music app open at all...
but if everyone posts their question inside the same thread......... it makes it harder to search for each individual question!
I did try asking the question in the thread of the rom but it kinda got hidden away amidst the talk of those having trouble flashing it.....
Anyway I'm looking for the stock voicemail app that came with the phone I looked in a few rom threads and found the apps theyposted as being all the removed stock stuff but I didn't see the voicemail app in any of those can anyone tell me how to get this please?

Will the new update destroy my root access and if it does will I be able to root again.
Also I still have a stock kernel and I have deleted like sprint hotspot and the sprint apps

It will destroy your root if you do over the air update,if you update in clockwork then it shouldn't.?Now will we be able to reroot again after ota update?I dont know,im wondering about that myself. You should search DI18 update thread.
If you have removed any sprint apps the OTA won't even work. If you've not removed any and are running a stock sprint that's already rooted and clockwork is installed then there is a zip file floating around here that will allow u to just install it with clockworkmod. Other then that you CAN root after the di18 update if u decide to go the "start from scratch" route.
Personally I went back to complete stock using odin and the di07 tar file. I then rooted and installed clockwork recovery. From there I flashed the signed zip file that can also be found in a thread here (sorry for not posting links and all its not as easy when using the app but all threads are pretty appropriately titled shouldn't be too hard) that got me to the di18 and the rest is history

Question RE: OTA updates and root
Hey guys, finally jumped ship from ATT and got an Epic the other day. Kinda funny I was running DZO's Froyo on my Kaiser and now I am back to Eclair, but whatever..it's still night and day difference!
My question is regarding updates and if I can just jump into a new ROM. I have successfully 1-click-rooted and clockworked my phone. It shows Eclair DG17, Kernel 2.6.29. I tried to do an OTA update to get latest, but phone says its up to date, even though Sprints site says an update is available and DI07 is latest..
Where do I go from here?
Well ur still running stock from what I gathered in ur explanation so if u wanted to get to the latest update u can grab it from Firon's thread about the "non-stock" update. In that same thread he has the file available for those that are still on stock and just simply rooted with clockworkmod (you would fall under that) once ur on that latest update you can look at the different threads for roms and kernals

Flash your phone to stock kernel and stock rom(DG27) using Odin(factory restore)Then do sprint's ota update(make sure your phone is charged at least half way or it won't update),that should update your phone to DI17 or DI18(not sure wich one, probably DI18).
Oh,you can go to settings "About phone",System updates","Android update" to see if your update is downloading.
I just activated my girlfriend's phone and immediately it prompted for update, so I did. To my surprise it was not DL09, but instead EA28. So after some google searches I found this:
http://phandroid.com/2011/02/03/samsung-fascinates-ea28-update-coming-to-fix-emergency-calling-bug/
The site is basically right, they repackaged dl09 with the emergency calling bugfix and pushed it out with a new build number.

I believe I was able to root successfully but when I try to flash ClockwordMod, it doesn't seem to be working. ROM manager says its flashed and has the latest version, but when I boot into recovery it is definitely not ClockwordMod. I cannot do backups or choose a file from SD to install.

Update broke my phone!
I just saw a screen forcing the update upon my phone. I clicked "OK" but when the EA28 update installed itself on my phone, it locked my phone into a cycle of trying to install it again and again. The baseband version shows S:i500.04 V.EA28, the Build number shows SCH-I500.EA28, but the update keeps trying to install the update. It gives a Prompt to Install-Reboots Phone-Prompt to Install-Reboot Phone... I managed to get it to stop for a little while by scheduling a deferral of the update until tomorrow. Does anyone know how I can keep the update from trying to install?

I managed to get my phone to stop rebooting every 3 minutes by ending the InnoPath Active Care process and clearing the cache. But when I woke up this morning, the phone was at the emergency recovery screen. It went into a cycle of rebooting that made it as far as media scanner. I got it to stop rebooting by turning ON wifi (I suppose that's because Active Care needs WiFi off to do an OTA). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this "Feature" that is rebooting my phone?

I thought about rooting, and started the process with the one click mod about a month ago. I got the superuser app in the process. Never went any further. Now I am trying to download the official froyo (which is technically on hold), but it aborts everytime. I am wondering if the superuser or CWM is causing this. I have done a wipe/factory reset three times. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'd suggest updating by using the official Samsung update on their web site, which you can run from a PC. It seems to provide a much more trouble free update. It will also totally wipe your phone (but not the SD card) so be sure you have a way to restore your data.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D700ZKASPR
Assuming you have a PC, click on the software link, then click on the EXE link for the EB13 update. Install on your PC and follow the directions.
odin back to stock, use eb13 in the pda slot you will have a stock updated phone
i would also advise against updating ota because it's my understanding that it was problems with the ota process that caused sprint to pull the plug. it's really hard to adequately stress how simple using the samsung exe is. if you can turn on a computer you can have a fresh installation of eb13 froyo
wait for the actual fixed release from either sprint or samsung and use either the samsung tool or odin to do a clean install.
I have 2 Epics, one stock, one rooted and rommed. I ran the Samsung .exe
and it caused nothing but troubles on the stock, so had to return to 2.1.
To do so, either go to Service Center or run Odin.
This will also work to unroot and return to stock. The easiest instructions I have found to follow are on Android Central under Epic Forums. Look in Roms and Rooting Section in stickies. Title is something like unbrick. It gives all the links for downloads and how to's. You must be registered to use
but it is less techy there so might be easier to follow.
Thanks, everybody. I just finished the update via the samsung site. Phone just came back online. I will start messing around with it and see how everything worked out. Thanks again!

Hi Everyone,
I'm a total noob at this stuff so thank you in advance for your patience. A while back I installed the 1-click clockwork mod to root my phone. This morning I got the system notification about the EC05 update. I clicked the button to begin the install and walked away. When I returned I saw the following message:
E:Error in /cache/5f372cb40834.update-SPH-D700_DI18ToEC05.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
My phone appears to be frozen there. It doesn't do anything when I hold the power button down, I hope I didn't brick this thing.
I've seen mention of using Odin to flash back to stock. That's something I'll be looking into but if anyone could chime in to help speed up my recovery I'd appreciate it. Is there any chance that I'll be able to retain my contacts list at this stage?
If you had your contacts backed up on a Gmail account, they'll resync once you sign in again.
I'm rooted on clockwork 2.5.1 and my oTA failed. Everything else is stock. I tried a manual update and it failed also.

Looking at ODIN it appears I have to start with my phone powered down. It's not doing anything when I hold the power button. Should I just pull the battery?
If you saved your contacts to Google then yes they are saved. If you don't know then go online to your gmail acct and when tmyiu log in to your email you'll see all your contacts to the left. So when you get your phone up and runnunig when you log into your gmail acct it will sync all your contacts to your phone. As far as Odin if your phone is locked up then that's the best bet. Trust me its easy. Since their isn't a tar file yet to ec05 your best bet is to Odin a fresh install of di18 and then you can accept the update or do it yourself. I can't post links using tapatalk that I'm on but look in the development section for Odin. You will need Odin and the di18 tar file. If someone comes thru here maybe they can post it. Anymore questions just ask or you can pm me. Good luck.

I think that one click root removed the Asphalt 5 Demo apk, which may have caused your problem. If you cannot get the phone to boot, your going to have to wipe it, and start over. If you can, then reinstall the Asphalt 5 and try again. Hopefully your contacts were saved to Google, you can log into your Gmail account and look for them there. There should be a warning when you add a contact on your phone that states what the repercussion are if you add to the phone instead of Google. I have my contacts & calendar backed up on Outlook , Gmail, and even my Ipad (Ipads are crap BTW). Good luck.

Thanks, don't think that worked but while trying I noticed my volume button was moving a cursor that I could use to select a "reboot" option.
Okay, I have successfully rebooted my phone. It's still running DI18. But since I'm having issues I'm going to hold off on the update until I get home from work to try and figure everything out.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
What happens when you pull the battery and place it back in? Does it go to the same spot? I think I read somewhere that some people were successfully using Odin with the battery removed. I guess you could remove the battery, plug in the USB, hold 1 and hit the power button and give it a try.

Your phone has to be completely off. It sounds like you are in recovery. Take out the battery, put it back in and hold 1 then power.

Wait if it said installation aborted then it shouldn't have done anything. Hit reboot phone. Like I said it sounds like you are in recovery

That's what I did, and it worked as you described. My phone is working again (just like it was before I initiated the OTA update) so I'm going to wait and try this again after work when I have more time.
I'm glad you at least have your phone. When you used the one click root it removed a stock app and put clockwork recovery on your phobe. That's why its not taking it. Your best bet is sometime yo Odin a fresh di18 and then it will take it fine. Or wait a little bit and there will be a tar file to ec05 that you can put in Odin to flash directly there. If you.need anything you can.pm me.

There's a very easy manual Odin + Froyo + root + no.kill.data procedure out there on the webz (first came across it on another forum, which thanks a dev here on XDA) and I must say that it was very very straightforward. PM me if you want the link, but before you do anything make sure you:
- download and execute the correct samsung drivers
- make sure you check the box at: Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging
- read a bit about the process first
- download and open the ZIP or RAR files (from the procedure I mentioned) so that they are ready to go - make suer you put them all on your desktop
- follow directions precisely
- be patient
This was my first time zapping an Android phone (moved from WinMo about a month ago) and it was very worry-free. Remember, computers are dumb - you have to do things in the right sequence or have the proper switches toggled correctly. Luckily, humans have sussed out the process for us!
cheers/dom

I would suggest that you make a back-up of your contacts if they are stored on your phone just in case.
Cool.thanks. If I run into problems, I'll pm you

Ok i've searched the forums and am getting more and more confused. I have gingerblur 3.1 installed currently and would like to do the ATT ota update. Can I just download it and install from the system update? Or do I need to wipe the whole phone clean and start over? Thanks and sorry if this is a duplicate.
I am wondering this too...

I'm in the same boat, I got GingerBlur 4.5 installed and I would like to install the Gingerbread 4.5.19 OTA update. Are there proper instructions out there? I can't find any. I'm assuming I may have to go back to Stock 1.8.3 and do an OTA update. But can someone please confirm. Any instructions would help as well. Thanks
The directions I seem to need are...
Un gingerblur
Un root
As an aside, I got notified of the ota and it failed.

Make sure your battery is fully charged so that you don't run out of power during the upgrade process.
To install the upgrade:
Copy the file to the SD Card
Your phone is on the latest Android 2.2 software (Blur_Version.4.1.83.MB860.ATT.en.US)
From the home screen, press Menu, select Settings,
Scroll down and select About Phone.
Select System upgrades.
After a couple of minutes, your device will confirm the upgrade is available.
The Copy prompt will appear. Select “Copy”
The Install upgrade prompt will appear. Select Install Now.
Your device will power off and display installation progress.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Please ensure you are aware of the following information after the installation of the package
It will then power up and stay on the carrier logo for up to 5 minutes before powering on to the home screen.
Please do not interrupt this process.
Contacts and email from Google and MOTOBLUR may take up to 60 minutes to synchronize. The phone may appear slower during this initial synchronization process

same issue here
i tried to install the OTA update, it failed... tried to install it manually and it didn't work either. i tried to install it using android recovery and it didn't work.
Im using gingerblur 4.5
side note,
can any one of you please provide the full name of your system version? mine says "Version.4.1.83.MB860.ATT.en.US ", thing is, I tried to flash a stock sbf to roll back to motoblur, RSDlite fails every time with a message "sec_exception febe 35 35", my phone isn't recognized as 'NS Flash Olympus', it shows 'SE Flash Olympus'.
is there a thread to fix this issue?
thanks!
I figured out how to do it. First I unlocked the bootloader and then followed the directions on here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163342
Worked fine
You need to flash back to stock, i.e. flash 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 or 4.1.83. OTA update to 4.1.83 if you are on an earlier version. The update will not work if you are modded in any way. You need to be on stock 4.1.83.
My god, how many times does this have to be said!!!
So let's just say that you are a moron (like me) and just did the OTA over Gingerblur 4.5 and now you have the exclamation point triangle and android on your screen and it does do anything... is it safe to battery pull? or did I just brick my phone?
EDIT: nevermind...
Is there any guide how to flash back?...

Well you could use rsd if you've never installed the GB ota.

Update, now problem
I was on gingerblur 4.5, rooted, sideload enabled.
used RSD to flash 4.1.83 - successful - booted - checked mail - etc...
went to Motorolla.com and DL the official firmware
copy .zip to sd
settings/about/upgrade
let it run
followed instructions to the letter from Motorola
30 minutes now on the Rethink Possible screen - seems like a fail?
Help?
Update - she lives, just needed to wait about 45 minutes
