Hey,
My Vibrant CONSTANTLY keep rescanning the media on the SD, and its slowing the phone to a crawl. Ill watch it start, finish, and then start again 30 seconds later (or so). Anyone else have this, and if so, did you find a solution?
Thanks!
Sounds buggy...mine usually just does it if I reboot the phone

Actually my ONLY complaint about this phone not constantly but every time I reboot and it takes a good while scanning, if I try to press on any button while scanning the phone freezes, there has to be a tweak to disable this feature when vibrant roms become available..
Thats my issue too....it freezes, the screen goes off, the button backlight stays on, and I cant do anything but hard-reset it by holding the power or pulling the battery. ive deleted almost everything of the internal SD, so I have no idea why its freezing
I remove the external card and still experiencing the same thing, I just don't understand how my old HD2 with buggy winOS never did this, come on Developers Android is an awesome OS and extremely configurable, PLEASE fix this issue for us.
Mine does it on reboot and after I unplug it from my pc. It is a little annoying but it doesn't last too long.
It's scanning 16gb of memory for media changes. Why would you expect that to be faster than 20-30 seconds. Are you guys serious?

If it's doing it constantly and not just on reboot than that is definitely a defect.

The media scanner runs for me, at least, every time the userspace filesystem is modified, so on unplug from PC, file copy/deletes in the file manager, bluetooth unpair...etc. If you have an app that is frequently writing to /sdcard then that's probably triggering it for you.
Did you replace your SD card with one from another phone? I don't get any major scanning issues
Just exchanged the phone for a new one. Will report back.
No, I am using the stock SD card (Not ready to lose Avatar yet)

I know you can copy avatar to the internal memory and it will still work... but the link on the app won't find it, you'll have to go to files, ect. I'm pretty sure you can copy it to another SD card without any trouble. As far as the media scanner, it is pretty annoying...scanned alot when I first got the phone ..of course moving around avatar, it took a long time to rescan and it scanned several times. Now it seems to scan evertime I move or delete a file ...sometimes it scanns more than once but its usually pretty fast. It would be cool to change the settings to rescan only when you specify or something.
i have just over 7 gig of music on my sd card, scan after reboot lasts less than a min.
<edit> it is a class 6 card, so that might help with the speed etc...
I was messing around in /system and looked at one of the .conf files. There's a line in there for media with a value of "on". I'm sure if you edit it to "off" it'll stop scanning but who know what the negative effects would be.
Ya, I never had this media scanning on my G1, on any build. Wonder if it has something to do with the Internal SD and some sort of database it maintains of it. No idea why it wouldn't be simple flash memory though, exactly like an SD card
It's because of the Music player and such.
I'd still say try a reset. I just did and things (besides the GPS which is not going to be fixed by this) like the market and such aren't giving me such long loading screens. I was installing 3-5 apps at a time. Even the Friends feed widget doesn't have the looooooong loading screen anymore.

I have this same problem. Typically it will kick into the media scanning mode when opening Google Maps. The phone becomes unusable for several minutes. The screen will shut off and then comes back on close to a minute after hitting the power button. Sometimes it will display "Safe Mode" in the lower left corner.
yeah, I have an 8 gig card which is basically full and the media scanning I only notice on boot ups. And this takes very little time (20 seconds maybe).
I'm curious if you have a corrupt file or app that is causing the issue man?
Have you moved avatar to your computer, stuck the SD card in your PC and formatted it? I wonder if you put it back in your phone and rebooted if you would still have this issue?
Worse case you just move the folder with avatar back to the card, nothing lost.
Do you mind trying a format?
Someone should try the "Autostarts" app. I would try it, but it requires a rooted phone, and mines not rooted yet. This app may be able to prevent the media scanning...

Thanks for the tips. I have wiped, exchanged phones, wiping the internal and external SD, and attempted to prevent the scan using autostarts (although I didnt find anything specific), all w/o luck. Ive removed ALL my music from my internal SD, only pictures are left.
It seems to scan every few minutes or so, and it almost always causes a restart of the Touchwiz process (w/ a reload of all the widgets) and lags the phone a lot (so much that it doesnt respond to button touches for a minute or so)
Im about ready to dig in and disable this scan unless we can find a legitimate fix or purpose for it.
I have tried a bunch of different setups for my droid x and for some reason This is the third time I lost almost all my pictures. I was wounding if this happened to anyone else or if anyone knows what it might be causing it.

Losing pictures from your gallery? from your contacts? Are you just using the stock camera app? What types of setups?
I have had it happen, deleted about 95% of all my pics, and i had well over 300
I noticed it when I first started themeing, i think it was cause from the constant plugging in and un plugging of the usb cord. Sometimes i would tell it to go into charge only mode, but when i plugged it in again it would be in mass storage mode.
have you been doing that a lot?
I've looked through this site and others about rooting my Droid X and it seems easy enough. I'd like to do it to solve a few problems I've had with my X since it was released.
Namely, (1) I want access to the internal phone storage to remove bloatware, save pictures/ringtones, etc. (2) Fix the issue of randomly deleted pictures from my SD card. (3) Run custom (non blur) UIs, among other things.
I've already started using Launcher Pro, so my phone's appearance is pretty close to acceptable. My X still deletes pictures, though, which apparently isn't as wide-spread as I thought...
Will rooting my phone fix any of these issues?
(1) If you root you can remove bloatware (though freezing it is a better option), I don't know what you mean by saving pictures/ringtones - you want to store it on internal memory? (2) Not sure about the randomly deleted photos. I used to have that issue from time to time, but read that it happened b/c I wasn't unmounting my phone from USB mode before disconnecting it from my computer. I unmount every time now and haven't had that issue since. Could just be a coincidence since it was a sparse occurrence anyway. (3) Rooting will let you install and run ROMs, which will give you custom UI's as far as changing the status bar icons and whatnot.
Personally, I'd recommend Fab's ApeX ROM. It kills the bloatware and changes the Blur theming throughout from Blur to Gingerbread.
Yeah, I want full access to the internal memory. Everytime the SD card is in use by the computer or my car stereo, I can't take pictures and it goes to the default (read: crappy) ringtones (which I'd like to delete anyway). I'd like to store camera pictures and ringtones on the internal memory.
I've been unmounting before I disconnect my phone and I have even been using the wall wart to charge it, when I don't need to modify data. It has lost my pictures, namely cd cover art, even after that. I probably forget sometimes, or someone else unplugs the phone. The only other conclusion I can think of is that it still can happen when I unplug my phone from my car stereo USB port.
I can say for sure rooting the phone will not cure the deleting pictures off the SD card. Mine has done it three times now. The first couple of times I chalk it up to me since one time I did install a themed gallery app. But the third time I know for a fact the photos where there one day and gone for the next. There is a great big long thread at the Moto DX forums on this problem and not a single peep from Moto in the thread on the subject.
I've also read (here I think) that apps like picture gallery will not be able to see the photos on the internal memory so you won't be able to view them on the phone. Same goes for music I think. Something along the lines of the apps don't have Super User rights so they can get into the internal file system. I could be wrong on this part but I know I did read it.
As the other post suggest it is better to freeze the bloat instead of deleting them. If the bloat is missing the phone will not update should Verizon push more updates out. Of course once you root you can install a ROM and not worry about the updates. Just be sure to make a backup before installing the ROM so you can go back if you need or want to.
Also try changing the USB connection to Charge only. That should keep the SD card from mounting when plug the phone into a PC, not sure about the car mount though since I don't have one.

Since i bought a new SD Card on ebay - 32 GB - i switched the stock camera to save all photos on external sd card. Looks like since then the pictures are dissapearing from the folder DCIM on external SD Card.
When i'm taking the picture, and then checking if the file is there - it is there everything is ok...... i can take a lot of pictures and the files are there and i can see all of them.
Then after some time (without switching tablet off) i'm trying to check the files in DCIM folder on the external sd card - and it is empty!!! Any of the file manager does not see any files in. The LOST folder on the card is empty as well. When i'm trying to make another picture from the camera app, and then check the files from the camera directly, it looks like it can open the just made picture and it see somehow the other files but can not open them - just says FAIL LOAD.
i have no idea what is happening.
I switched now the camera back to save the files on the internal storage card and see what will happen.
Any idea what the hell is happening?
I have a lot of files on the external SD Card and everything is ok. Nothing else dissapeared.
I have the same problem. As long as I do not shut it down I can get my pictures to load. Once I shut it down I get the failure to load error. It seems to have started with the 1.41 upgrade with me because all the picture prior to upgrade load with no problems. I am hoping 3.1 will correct the problem. Hope it will here this month.
I've started a thread about this a while ago called External MicroSD contents disappears. Please write there so we can all join together for this BIG issue.
Alot of people are reporting the same problem.
I have a 32GB too. Same problems, I put stuff in but when i restart lots of things vanish.
possible shutdown issue
I had one thread because I am having issues with the time zone not saving and then I saw another thread regarding the pictures so I started http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14545637#post14545637
I think it has to do with the shutdown process and the tab is not saving files/settings properly. Have not seen any further help or suggestions.
encryption issue?
In the threads regarding time zone changes, it appears to have been traced to encrypted tablets.
My tablet was encrypted. I did a factory reset and set the time zone on setup. I have not re-encrypted it yet and the time zone has saved. I'm debating whether or not to encrypt it again.
I never had a problem with pictures not saving, but I believe the issues could be related. For the people with the picture saving issue, are your tablets encrypted?
.....connected to my laptop all the apps I have located on my ext SD card disappear which I understand but when my Atrix is unplugged the apps I have stored don't reappear on my home screens.
They have to be manually put back on.
Does anyone know why this is.....it's doing my head in.
I'm running the Alien 4 rom with Faux123 kernel if that matters.
Cheers
Paul

I don't understand why people move apps to sd on a phone that doesn't need it.

For the same reason you cant access anything else on the SD card when in storage mode, the OS has to unmount it while the computer has access, thus you cant use anything on it including apps, this is normal.
To the first reply, cause I want to and to the second, read my question again. I said I know why they disappear when connected but don't know why they don't return when the device is unplugged.
Never had the problem on either of my 2 desires and wondered if it was Atrix or maybe ROM specific.
Don't post unless you can help. Thanks.
Ah i missed that part :-(..... In that case no idea never tried it as I have 1.2GB free of app storage.
Do they appear in the apps list?
Tried restarting the phone?
Tried a media scan (not sure if it will pick up apps)
Sounds like your ROM is not scanning the sdcard after remounting it.

No probs Nap and thanks Dennis, tried it mate but no joy.
Looks like I'll just use internal storage for ease from now as it gets boring adding them all back after a while.
Thanks anyway tho
you could always buy the dual mount SD program, best .99c I have spent so far. It allows you to mount and still access the sd on the phone. it is very helpful for me.
I had an issue with my ringtones that are located on storage being jacked up during mounts. the issue would occur when I had a notification, call, text, anything that made a noise that used a custom tone while mounted to a PC. After unmount the notification would either revert to default or choose a completely random tone.
I downloaded dualmount a few months back and that issue was resolved. I havent had to reset my notifications except when I flashed to CM, and I can live with that
