I've been doing a lot of research, and reading on the G1 forum, but i was just curious what you guys thought about the new Tmobile G1. It looks like a really slick phone and I'm seriously thinking about ordering it.
I know a lot of people will post the "its awesome" pitch.... but honestly
pros: extremely powerful hardware with a very stable operating system.
cons: the operating system is very new... meaning that there is no real software or rom development out there for it.... meaning no customization. (and currently no real games at all!!!! lol)
conclusion: im happy enough with my wing that i PERSONALLY will stick with it for a while (especially with ttrans new 7.4 rom - great performance and plenty of space).... as soon as some real progress is made in development for android i will buy a G1
I pre-ordered mine 2 hours ago and can't wait to get mine on November 10th.
I have the Wing and love it but I'm the type of person that gets bored really fast. So G1 here I come!

Well if your that type of person then you will only be entertained by the G1 for about a week... i've been doing some reseach on it and most of the reviews say that its pretty basic and needs work by developers! the only reason i would get one is the fact that it has the hardware to support 3G..but my location wont have it till next year so im happy with my wing!!
i personally love my wing
i can see my self upgrading to the touch pro instead of the g1
i ilke the innovative look the the g1 but if i get some hand on with it i can see which phone i will go to
i have had a lot of hands on with the touch diamond so i can fix a lot of the issues with the touch pro if i get it
Look, I loved my Wing when I had it too. But any one who thinks the G1 won't blow the Wing out of the water is ridiculously stupid. And I don't say that to offend any one either. Do some research. Look at what the phone can do and what they phone will do in the future. People can make applications. That right there says a bunch. Imagine the kind of **** we'll be able to use. Android may be new, but it's gotten great reviews. As time goes on, it will only get better for the G1 and its users. There's a reason they've sold over 1.5 million pre-orders for the G1. Stick with Windows Mobile if you want, lol.

I just wish I had one so I could actually spend time with it. The fact that it's more or less open source, means there will be a ton of programs and applications once there is time to make them. I think I'll hold off for a bit, but 179 is ridiculously cheap compared to the wing, and has the hardware to smoke, but for the time being, I think I'll just keep moddin my wing and do some more research.

Nah, I'm going to wait and do more research and see what programs, roms, and games become available. I think I'll stick with the wing for now, and just mod and flash roms every other week! lol. But, the G1 is only 179 so thats a huge price drop. Either way, I really can't wait to see what becomes available for the G1.
what would be great would be a g1 wm6 port - with fully functional drivers..... i know everyone is talking about getting android on their phone, but just think for a second how nice it would be to get a nice new extremely fast phone for 170 odd dollars and continue using all the software you are familiar with.... and then as soon as application development and customization become mainsteam for android you could always flash back. i know its too much to wish for because of the lack of drivers, but it would be great for me if it ended up happening

You know, that would be PERFECT. I'm really not that familiar with the Android o.s., but if they could incorporate it into WM6, then it would be hands down the winner. We could use everything we already use to load applications, etc. Since it's supposed to be open source, maybe somebody will figure out how to do it?!?
G1 vs Wing
This month in PC Magazine (October 2008) Sascha Sagan, the director of new product reviews, said this,"never buy a product in the first few weeks after it comes out. Wait a month. By then... you will be able to tell if something is really worth a buy".
My two cents,
Paul D.
G1 will eventually be better than the wing, just not now. There's alot of holes that need patching up in the os to make it a real competitor to wm. When u compare Android right now to say ttran otp 7.x, Android isn't even in the same league. But give it some time, and maybe Android 2.0, then u'll really start seeing what G1 can do.
Also, this will be a fun phone in regards to xda's developing and hacking community and also to us, the end-user. As people start accessing and examing the innards of Android, who knows what juicy things can be created and imagined. Only issue i see is the stuff they left out, but the os seems to be solid with no real problems experienced. Messaging needs work, with mms being the main problem (can't send gifs or video).

Yeah I agree. Seeing how this phone is really meant to be modified, I can't even imagine the amount of software, roms, mods, etc there will be for this phone. I do think it will take some time, so I believe I will hold off, but I'm pretty excited about it.

that is exactly what i want. i just want to keep useing windows mobile. it has been around for ever (ce). hopefully someone in the linux community will figure out how to flash it to what ever you want.
I am a G1/Wing owner. I got my G1 2 days ago and i can tell you, i am very happy with the phone so far. I do miss using TTran's OPT and hope they port TouchFlo2D to Android. The Manilla Theme is the best i've seen!
I am also one of those people that would much rather run Linux on my PCs at home, but don't because i am in the IT field so i need to stay current on Windows. Anyhow, I understand people wanting to wait and recommend most do that. I am not usually the type to jump on a product at Version 1 until some updates and public testing has been done. But i am looking forward to Android's growing pains!
I just upgraded to a G1. What I did was, when the G1 presale was announced, I called to say I was going to cancel my service soon and asked what they would offer to keep me. The CS rep asked what I had in mind. I said I wanted the to see if there was a way to get the G1 with 1 a year contract. The CS rep told me not until after the actual launch but she would lower my unlimited family text messaging to $9.99 permanently if I would wait until the launch to decide. I agreed. So today, I called back for the G1. They offered me the G1 for $179 + NO $18 upgrade fee if I agreed to keep my four lines for 1 year. So, that's what I did. I wasn't going to cancel anyway because, it's hard top beat T-Mo's rates, even if the coverage is a little weaker than other carriers in my area. My Wing will likely be up for sale after I evaluate the G1.
Update:
I just canceled my order. I don't want to put $800 on the line to save $300.
Hi guy and gals, I'm new to the forum and was hoping you can help me. I am a current iPhone user but am considering getting the HD2. Now I have looked at the specs on the phone and it blows my iPhone out of the water. But what can I do with that hardware? I can see the potential but I am trying to talk my girlfriend into leaving ATT and going T-Mobile and getting the HD2. But she loves all her iPhone apps. So what are some cool things this HD2 can do?
I appreciate any help or advice you can offer. Oh yea, I'm in US.

Yes, the hardware specs are amazing, but you should really consider what you need from a phone before switching, trust me.
You don't have to leave AT&T to get this phone, since T-Mobile's network uses the same system as AT&T (and the rest of the civilized world outside of the US )
As far as features go, the coolest thing I can think of off the bat is the FpseCE, a playstation emulator. Yeah, that's freakin' awesome. Of course, there is also a million-and-one free apps out there, just check out freewareppc.com.
There is also Windows Marketplace, with about 300+ games available (can you tell I'm all about the games yet?)
But in all seriousness, you should pop by google and try "tmobile hd2 site:youtube.com" as your search term (or click here and I'll do it for ya). Lot's of cool videos out there.
Comparing the iPhone to the HD2 is like (literally) comparing the PC to the Mac. There's some similarity, but overall very different experiences.
Hope that helped!
If your an iPhone user you SHOULD really look in to the many user that came from an android or an iPhone platform.
Like Snarksneeze states, there are thousand of apps for winmobut their not as simple to access then due to the fact that NOT ALL OF THEM are in the marketplace and you would need to look for them on the internet, also the HD2 is a Windows base phone so therefore your comparing it to an Apple productand there is a HUGE differences like the phone crashing crashingfreazing and not responding proplerly.
I sudgest trying out the phone for around 14 to 30 days depending the time your state allows you to cancell your contract and return the phone. for me Tmobile is way better than att and HTC is better than apple no questions asked (ask anyone around here) however the apple is a stupid friendly phone so that means you dont have to do nothing to customizing it and it good out of the box unlike the hd2 that you have to spent countless hours looking for the apps and the rom that suits you, but at the end its all worth it
Oh and when it comes to women I say the iPhone its better.I think every girl I dated like or has an iPhone more than any other phone. lol but that's just me
Thanks for the input guys, my girl broke down today and she decided to get the HD2. I told her she can keep her iPhone and still use any apps as long as they didn't need the 3g, or I can unlock it and use it on T-Mobile. But unfortunately when we went down to go pick up our HD2's they were sold out. So, I picked up a Motorola cliq so I could give Android a test drive till they get in some HD2's. I appreciate your input and look forward to asking ya'll many more questions and hunting out the best ROMs. Have a great day peeps.

What makes you want the HD2? Is it just the specs? The new iphone coming out in a couple months will have just as good or better specs, probably. Have you ever used Windows Mobile? Its nothing like the iphone and you're not going to get the same user experience from it. My girlfriends still pissed at me for convincing her to get a WinMobile phone instead of an iphone a year ago. Unless you like spending time tweaking and setting it up the way you like, you will probably be more comfortable with the iphone. You have to be somewhat tech savvy to get past some of the issues you might encounter with WinMo. Its not going to be user friendly and work out of the box the way the iphone does. It also doesn't have as many apps as the iphone. Unless your familiar with WinMo or feel like learning a whole new OS that won't be supported much longer, I would definitely think about it. If you have to convince your girlfriend to get it, I don't think she will be happy with it.
Also, depending on your area, T-Mobiles service is usually not nearly as good as AT&T.... especially when it comes to 3G. I have constant issues getting 3G inside houses or buildings. T-Mobiles 3g band doesn't penetrate nearly as well as AT&Ts.

I agree with this. I was an iPhoner, but the things that I didn't like about the phone delt with the lack of customization. WinMo was a natural switch for me so it was ok. BUT!!!! I work as a Windows programmer and have been programming since I was 13. I went to school for computers, my father worked in computer, my house has a 2 to 1 Computer to Person ratio (3:1 if you count phones as computers) so I'm not the norm.
My wife on the other hand would have thrown this phone against the wall the day she got it if I hadn't gotten her a MyTouch. That phone is the perfect "Intro" smartphone.
So, if you want to get thrown into the mix, go for it. If your gf/wife is not computer savvy, save yourself the headache of being both a user and an HTC technician and get her another phone. The HD2 is not for the casual phon user
I know that this phone is really outdated but I have a chance to purchase a brand new one. I currently have a T-Mobile Shadow 1st generation because I have broken a iphone and g1. I'm really not sure if this phone is really out dated. I'm going to stay on T-Mobile for one more year so I need a decent phone to get me through that time without getting a contract. If you guys think its a good choice, I would be buying it for around 65-75$. or would it be a better investment to purchase a phone off of ebay or another website?
Thanks!
For that money go for it!
maple is one of the best non-touch screen smart phones
outdated?
Everything is outdated after 4 months...that´s consumerism now...
Personally I am quite happy with Maple
Hey, thanks for the quick response. A few more questions but it seems like the maple forums and development for roms have seemed to end...? Is that true?
Would it be smarter to invest into another phone? I'm open to anything, I'm just kinda looking? Is that price good for the phone? Thanks!
Depends what you want from a phone, if you want a phone focused on communication then this is definitely one of the best and most beautiful. Is a very good price, i bought a second hand Snap to 150 EUR. I am extremely happy with the phone, i did upgrade from HTC Diamond. Autonomy is superior to a touch screen phone, four days in my case in conditions which are frequently used messaging and e-mail and browsing.
Well, Looks like I'm a new owner of a T-Mobile 3g. Now that things are slow here, I will help you guys out develop and make this phone even better.
BTW: If you don't know me, I'm a mod at allshadow.com and I was really big within the shadow. Let the hacking begin!
Great to know you made your choice!
And willing to read you in Maple section where your help will be more than welcome!
The vibration in the phone is very weak, is there a reg edit to make it more powerful?
I love it too much!
The new phone feeling hasn't gone away and I'm two weeks in.
Just had to share...

Glad to hear, welcome to the forum
Sent from HTC Evo, the REAL iPhone killer....
Hey, most of us have had our EVOs for months and still haven't lost that fresh feeling new tech brings.
It's actually rather difficult to lose it with all the excellent ROMs and support we have access to here.
For example, I recently switched to a newer ROM that has swype. I'm suddenly addicted to writing, posting, texting, and emailing from my phone. These new interest get me looking in new places for more apps and such, and the process repeats!
-Just warming up!
The new phone shine is gone for me. I guess I need to flash a new rom or learn how to write apps or something.
You have been EVOfied.
Had mine since November, its still in my hand 24/7
Bought mine on release day and I am still finding new things to play with all the time. Most of the people here are great and willing to help and the dev's keep putting new little tweaks in the rom's.
Just signed up for dropbox, and that is awesome. And the utorrent app w/ 3.0 alpha on my desktop is amazing It seems like it is never ending!!!
Granted, this is my first android phone and before this I had a blackberry curve that was hell-bent on making me kill myself - this is the coolest device i have had in quite some time!
Cheers!
Every time I get bored with my phone I find something new to tinker with, some new program to replace an old program with or some new program to do something new and cool with my phone. Right now I'm busy learning how to automate my phone with Tasker.
lol, i must say, i'm not a big fan of "big" phones, but the EVO is technically not all that huge. i prefer slider phones, but the on screen keypad is really easy to get used to. this phone definitely rocks and should be the iphone killer. the qik application is a bit disappointing to me since the 4g is not all that great, and my g/f doesn't have a wireless router (yet), but i'm sure once i get her one, it'll be top of the game. htc and android are the best team!
P.s. I have root and don't even care to put any roms on here, the stock is great, just removed the bloat and my battery life and performance is uncanny than any other droid i've had before.
I know the feeling! I used to drive 10-20 miles down the interstate before I realized that I had left my BB at home. Now I don't make it to the kitchen without turning around and snatching it up!
Got mine at xmas...
someone help... I think I play with this thing to much...
it is affecting my other important things in life....
I need to stop...
i need to quit....
is there an app to make me put this thing down for a few hours?
ps.. I am talking about my evo!!!!
lol! let someone in your family put a lockcreen code on it lol
... but then you would probably sit for hours trying to figure it out
Best bet is to just feed the beast.
You could always use Tasker to pop up regular messages to tell you to stop playing with it or you'll wear it out.
Hi guys, I started this thread with the intent that the new users of our forum could first stop in and introduce their selves. They are the new blood around here and may very well have something useful to share with us! Use this thread as you see fit as long as you keep it clean and follow all the XDA rules
Enjoy!!!
Here I'll start us off:
Hi my name is Josh. I'm 27, married to the best woman in the world. We have a beautiful 5yo daughter who is now in school. I have one dog, one wolf mix, a cat, a hamster and a tank full of minnows(my daughter said we are not allowed to use them as bait, lol) I am U.S. Army Medically Retired. I was a 91B(mechanic)(originally a 63W for you old heads) in the Army until I hurt my back. I've been to Iraq twice, Egypt once, and did maint support operations on the Port of Beaumont, Texas and the Port of Olympia in Washington. I was there while the riots where going on. I did enjoy serving my country and am very proud to have been given this special opportunity. Now that I am out of the mil I can focus more on my family, living life and of course my geeky addiction.
Its been a fun road to now. I started out with my first Android phone the HTC Droid Eris. I enjoyed the works of many great devs and learned so much while using there Rom's. workshed, Tazzpatriot, condemned soul, conap, gnarlic man the list goes on... These guys are really who got me interested in developing and everything else. With there help a did a little theming for the Eris. It was mostly just minor stuff for Cm. As time past I eventually moved on to the HTC Droid Incredible. I've been here since March. I started out again doing some theming then I moved up to my DTR's (BUNKER BUSTER DTR and yes since I'm retired U.S Army thats why it is named something militaryish). Its a fun little project and its also my way of sticking it to the man, lol. Now most of my focus goes to my Roms. I have Pure Speed which is my first and my baby. I'm so proud of that rom. I also have Hybrid Speed, Sub Sonic and my latest my first ever 3.0 rom Pure Shooter.
All in all this Inc community has taught me so much and showed me a whole new world I never knew existed. We have good support, good people and great devs here. My time spent here is now just keeping my work updated and trying to help out as much as I can.
Anyways, enough with me blabbering on... Lets hear about you!
You know the phone is awesome when the introduce yourself thread is created a year and a half after release.

Seriously, I got mine in march of this year with phones surrounding the dinc that supposedly had better tech and have not looked back since. When my contract is up in two years, there will be some serious advancements in phone tech.

Hi Don me too, lol. BTW what are you doing in here old timer? Just kidding.
New Guy
Retired Navy with 30 years in Subs. (Missile Technician)
I used this forum to root the other day.
This site seems to be used as a reference for others so I went to the source.
I rooted to the CM7 and the new radio that came out with gingerbread.
After going through the rooting process I am ready not to go through the setup again. TB kept force closing after each app install(took a long time) I'll wait for awhile and let the guru's play with the new GB and see what develops.
I am Ryan, been here since day 1. The root process was crazy involved then... Memories! But I got it, after three days of trying after work! I try to help here from my experiences I've had with my Inc. I've rooted my girl's Desire, my Xoom, and this week my buddy's Inc is getting the business!
I've done some minor tweaking of existing code, but haven't done any ROM creating/modding. I've made themes for myself, so I understand how to replace/edit/create draw 9 PNG's and replacing other files in APKs. I've become pretty good with GIMP, but have never created images from scratch.
Other than that, I'm a smart ass, like to golf, and am currently moving in with my girl. I've met really cool people in these forums, who I continue to talk with via Twitter or Gtalk.
Looking forward to helping anyone out, and meeting new/existing DInc owners.

Hi!
My name is Paul I've had my phone since November of last year, but only later decided I wanted to try this rooting shenanigans in January. I was again slow to switch from sense over to AOSP, but now since I've done all that I really love my phone and even now I just figured out there's a whole mess more you can do with widgetlocker and other theming apps.

http://mycolorscreen.com/category/android/
Some of the stuff on there I had no idea you could even do, it's amazing.
I think there'll probably be more user who've had their Dinc for a while rather than newer users BUT ANYWAYS.... Well my name's Antonio and I'm 17. I'm hoping to go to either Princeton or Boston University and become an Anesthesiologist. The Dinc is my first smartphone and I got it in September 2010, but didn't root until sometime around December. I had no idea what root was, I found out more about it when Gingerbread first came out and builds started coming out for the Dinc. I began to do some research and I found Xda, but I didn't become a member until March of this year. I have since then become a flashaholic and the longest continous time I've had a ROM has been Pure Shooter for two weeks so far.... Do we get a gold star for this? Lol

Well I'm not new, but I figured I'd chime in a bit!
Hi all! I'm Bob and I'm a college student with a major in Computer Science and minor in Information Systems. The HTC Incredible is my first smartphone, and since I got it on launch week, I've been hooked! I was pretty active on Android Forums, helping people out and whatnot but I finally decided to make XDA my permanent home.
I've recently begun developing apps for Android just as a fun side project. I have not made a ROM yet, but I have been heavily debating it. I think I'll give it a try when the real Gingerbread OTA comes out, but we'll see since I'll be busy with school starting back up AND work in a few days...
I try to help people out because this is a community. I try to give feedback as much as possible and like to point people in the right direction if ever needed. I am a bit of a ROM flashing addict and even the ROMs that I don't try, I at least read about and get familiarized with! The Inc community is seriously awesome, and we've only gotten better as a whole. Thanks to the devs and to all the members for making my hobby even more enjoyable!
cool idea; you know, i've always wondered about a lot of us here..we always talk phones and whatnot, but we dunno anything about eachother lol
well i'm jay (clearly lol) and i'm from the shore of NJ, born and raised (not to be affiliated with that dirtbag trash on that bull**** TV show, sigh.) i'm 24, i've got my bachelors from rutgers university and my masters from monmouth..unfortunately, since our wonderful government is utter **** right now, the fact that my degrees deal with getting a job in the state/federal government realm isn't helping whatsoever, as I can't land a gov job for the life of me...so i currently work for a small family-owned Verizon store that sells vzw phones, accessories and FiOS. besides that, i'm a musician of 11 years (bass, guitar, drums) and i play bass in a band.
as for my wonderful android journey, it only began in may of 2010 when my buddy sold me his htc eris for 20 bucks when he got his dinc on release day in the mail in april. he told me it'd be fine for me since it was my first smartphone, but he was sick of it already (had it for like 4 months lol) and that it was super laggy to him, so he got the dinc. well, the eris lasted me barely 3 months..even after rooting it and upping my processor speed with setcpu, the thing was still super laggy and the typing lag was atrocious..
so i was one of the people who ordered the Dinc during the Great Amoled Shortage of '10 hahah...ordered it early July, and got it on July 29th...kept it stock for a while, thought the phone was AMAZXING bc there was no typing lag etc...and then that damn Froyo OTA hit, and my phone just started crapping out. typing lag was about as bad as it was on the eris after that OTA, and i almost threw this phone so many times. so finally, in january of '11 i rooted...put on lou's redemptive revolution, still had keyboard lag, and was just super angry.
then i saw Z roms come about, and my lag was finally gone, and i've been playing with new roms ever since. so yeah, safe to say i've easily had this phone for a year and have no intentions on upgrading anytime soon! haha
whoa, that was a book! but whatever. i love my inc, and after just installing synergy again and the Warm theme for the first time, it's bringing me back to my early days of rooting when my first Z rom was warm z two.point.two!! ahh nostalgia.
I'm somewhat new here, due to my recent activity. But I recently got hold of an Incredible after my Droid A855 had growing digitizer issues. I haven't looked back because I really grew to like the device because it's extremely light (sometimes a little too light for comfort), and it's been smooth as melted butter. I'm currently running gingerbread inc deck 1.2b beta on my rooted Incredible. For what I consider(ed) a stop gap device, I'll be hard pressed to find a 4G phone I'll like enough to use my upgrade from VZW..
Another march guy. My name is cameron. I'm 17, currently jobless, have way too much on my plate for a 17 year old, and have the best girlfriend and family I could ask for.
The job field I want to get into its automotive. I've been tearing apart 350 small blocks, 429 big blocks, honda engines, and everything in between since I could walk.
I'm an admitted crackflasher (flashed every rom in the dev section at least once) I was introduced to android when I got a motorola defy for christmas (it blew)
One day I eventually wanna have a family of my own with this girl right here.
