i just want to let people know of some trouble i've had with an unlock company called Unlocode . I've used them twice. the first time everything worked perfect. the second time they couldn't get me a code. In the email they sent me stating that the they could not generate the code and that they would refund my money within 72 hours.
i bought the code on 3-20-11 and the same day i got a reply that the code could not be generated. it is now 4-18-11 and they never replied or tried to refund my money. i've sent 3 emails with no reply.
so i open a case on paypal 4-2-11 and on 4-9-11 they finally replied asking for my IEMI number. yet it is listed in the paypal transaction. i give it to them again thinking/hoping it will speed things up. i replied the same day about one and half hours later. from that day till 4-18-11 i didnt get any email or response from them.
so i esculate the claim and finally the start emailing me. They ask for my IEmi number yet again. they don't even bother to look it up or find any info on it in thier data base from last time they asked for it. they just respond with a threat.
so now these guys are threating me, that if i don't close the dispute on paypal they will lock my phone and say it was stolen.
-- Listen.we never have any problems with code.we can send a disble code to make that phone useless and locked again iif you don't close the paypal case. You have 48 hrs to close the case before that phone becomes useless and reported lost stolen. --
Is this legal and can they really do this?
they advertise 100% that they would get me the code yet in the email they sent me they couldn't supply it.
i just want people to know about this and hopfully help others chose a different unlocker.
if they would have refunded my money like they advertise i would not have any problems using them again. but with this much trouble ill just stay away from them and any other company associated with them

As far as I'm aware, only you or someone from some type of authority position (police etc.) can get the phone locked. My guess is that they're just saying they'll lock the phone so you don't take the money back.
If I were you, I'd email them back and tell them that you have been advised by your provider that it is not possible for them to have your phone locked. Then, tell them if they don't supply you with an unlock code in 24hrs you will escalate the dispute on PayPal further, and suggest that you'd rather not do this as it may give them a bad name.
If you're really worried, check with your provider 1st, but I'm 99% sure they can't get it locked just because they have the IMEI number.
Stick to your guns and don't let the bullies beat you.
yea im with john on this one, they're trying to scare you off. If they DID somehow lock your phone, they would be commiting an offence, unlawfull access of an electronic device, or some such, tantamount to hacking.
Be sure and keep a record of all and every thing you send and recieve to/from them.
(Id be tempted to still make a complaint once they have refunded you.)
I started to post here lastnight but I was to sleepy and had to get some sleep. AnywaycI am with John and Sam here. The only ones that can lock hour IMEI number andcreport it stolen is someonecwith law enforcement or your provider. Even then you have to contact them to have this done. If they do manage to lock your IMEI number and report your phone as stolen they have commuted a felony and can be prosicuted for such.
If I was you I would contact my carrier and make them aware of the threat they have made so if they follow through on the threat you can have them prosicited cause your carrier will have proffered you did not request this action.
I am like Sam I would continue to persistent this even if I got my money back. Also like John said contact those dirty crocks and tell them you know it is unlawful for them to take such an action against you. And that you have talked to your carrier about it so you have documentation. Then tell them that if that take such action you will have them prosicuted for there actions.
Post back here with any updates.
thanks for all your help. ill update as things go along.

Okay guys, i have a Samsung Galaxy S Phone. However i went camping this wekkend with my girlfriend and found a mytouch slide, a few scrathes but it turns on after i charged it but the imei seems to have been blacklisted. since it has a password i was unable to check anything or contact information but the phone itself does not work after reading that once an ime gets blacklisted, there is no going back.
so my question is.
since ill be going overseas, it would make a good present somehow if the imei is only blocked in the US. So id like to comfirm this that whenan imei is blacklisted, its only in the us and will work in other countries such as ecuador which is where im going.

You could turn it in, as its a serial numbered product it has a decent chance of making it back to its rightful owner. If you lost your phone would you want someone to try and get it back to you or to take it to another country to give away as a "gift"?
Moral speech over... The list of blacklisted IMEI isn't normally shared across countries, I would imagine it would be fine in ecuador.

Hmm. Well it could make it back but will it really?? If i go to tmobile you think they will really return it knowing it wont work any longer and there is no way it will get unlisted.

I have no knowledge of t-mobile, but I had an ameritech phone lost once and yes, someone turned it in to them and they mailed it back to me.
I can't image t-mobile would just pitch it in the trash and say ta hell with the customer.
If the person filed a police report and you turned it in to the police it would also make it back that way.
Lost/stolen property does often get returned when recovered. Its just that most stuff gets thrown away, sold on ebay, used, or given to someone else instead of being turned in.
Belive me they will get it back to the owner. U should turn it in like the other dude said wouldnt u want someone to do that for you.

I'm no expert, but I'm sure once a phone gets returned to a carrier and they return it to the original owner, they can PROBABLY un-blacklist the IMEI number.
But seriously, if I lost my phone I would be eternally grateful if someone were to turn it in.
Just do it for the karma, man.
Send It Back
Just for the fun of it I asked T-mobile and they said that they DO and WILL return the phone to the owner if one is mailed back to them. The girl said they will contact the owner if they are still one of thier customers. If not they will mail it to the last known address. Just a FYI. Return the phone and don't be so cheap to give a gift that someone else paid for..

I assumed as much, thanks for clearing that up for the OP. Hopefully they decide to return the poor persons phone. Who knows what kind of information they have on there they would like back.
I Stopped by the tmobile Corp today since i was buying a case for my phone and getting an unlock request made for my vibrant. Anyway i gave the phone to a Store Manager but i dont think they were able to log in since it has a password. I guess they will figure it out how to get his information.... Anyway. Job done. I saved the Day and now off to get ready to leave the country and get wasteddd all day, everydayyy. Hahahaha
I work for T-Mobile. They will definitely try to get this phone back to the owner. This would make someones day - do the right thing and PM me if you have any questions.

I work for T-Mobile Android/BB/PDA support and we can track down who the owner is regardless if its locked or not. You think your mobile number or IMEI are the only ways we can look up your account?.?
I called tmobile a week or so ago and explained my hinge issue. They blew me off so I called corporate. The csr their sent me a new g2. Two days ago ups dropped it infront of my door since I wasn't home. Fast forward to today; I called corp again to ask for a status or at least a tracking number. She told me that it was all ready delivered. And the notes indicate that the dumb ass ups agent just dropped it on my front door n left. She wont be able to send me a new g2 again till some investigation is complete. She mentioned that they will track the serial number of the phone and imei number. If one of my friends or family members have it I will have to pay full price for the device.
Is this true?!?! If some Jack ass I know stole my damn g2 I'm going to have to actually pay for it? What are my rights exactly? Can they really track a phone? If one of my neighbors stole it do I really have to pony up for it?
Thoughts?
first, this incident doesn't surprise me. UPS are worthless scumbags and i personally know many people that have had their **** stolen because of UPS's mess ups like this one. thats why i always have stuff shipped to my work address because there's always someone to take it and sign for it.
second, i don't know about what tmobile said. how would they know if the person that did steal it is your friend? family i can see how that may be possible to determine, but i highly doubt they'll be running background checks and social networking sites on the individual that stole your phone just for the sake of making sure he's not your buddy. i think they said that just to make sure you didn't claim a fake claim just to get another phone out of them, figuring that maybe you'd call later and say oh yeah my buddy picked it up and was holding it for me.

damn... I should have shipped to my work address.
I hope ur right, a part of me wants to know who the bastard is so I can call the cops. But another part of me doesn't want to dish out the 500 dollars for that bit of info.
I figured they were trying to paint me against a wall. To my knowledge tmobile just can't go out and flip a switch that lets them know all the iemi and serial numbers of the phones on their network.

Seems logical. Probably a fraud prevention scheme. It was just a few weeks ago that some idiot suggested in a thread (in this subforum) that he could get two devices by lying to T-mo and claiming his package was never delivered. That's fraud of course, and the thread was locked.
If you think your neighbors or your family members may have taken the package in for you, you better check with them before reporting a missing package.

Whenever a phone registers to a cellular network, it has to submit its IMEI and IMSI to the tower. Not only can any cellular carrier know which phones are active on its network at any given time, it can also identify the phone's location at the least to the accuracy of its cell tower density-- even more accurately if using time-delay or signal triangulation.

I spoke to all of them as soon as I hanged up with tmobile. They haven't seen ups nor were they holding my package for me.
I don't understand why you're liable for anything.
The way I understand it, you have a G2 with a loose hinge. You called TMO and they sent you a replacement G2 which was allegedly stolen from your front porch. Soooo you still have your old G2 and you can send that back to TMO to satisfy your $500 debt.
Of course, that leaves you without a phone. Unfortunately, TMO has nothing to do with this. The only recourse you have with UPS is diligently complaining until they give in, or seeing if there was any insurance purchased on the package. If UPS doesn't budge, you're most likely SOL and would have to find out who stole the phone.
Even easier than sending the package to your work is to make sure that whoever sends the package requires a signature on delivery. That way, you know someone in the house receives the package, or if no one's home, they'll leave a tag on your door and you can pick up the package at the distribution center in person.
I'd also like to point out that if UPS stopped dropping packages off and instead required signature for every package, everyone would ***** to high hell about having to be home all the time or having to go to the distribution center.
Ups will trace the package and will locate it. This happens more often than it should. Its often up to the driver if they get a signature or not. The driver will go out there and try to find it with their gps unit before tmobile will act on it. If it was coming from tmo it should be insured and they ought to send you another after its done if they can't find it.

Why haven't you made a police report? I mean, T-Mobile and UPS claim it was delivered. They don't seem to try to help you out. You don't have it. It's apparent someone is lying or someone is depriving you of your tangible property. Sounds like a theft. If the officer doesn't write it up as a theft, at the very least your generating a report. It should state you don't' have it and that you never gave permission for anyone to take it. You have been informed by both T-Mobile and UPS of it being delivered to your door step. Provide both phone numbers to the officer for the report, and also the IMEI number if T-Mobile is willing to give it to you. If not an investigator will be able to get it. It might never turn up and the investigator probably won't look to much into. He'll probably just enter a lost article into the system and attach the IMEI / serial number to it. You just need something for the insurance.
If the supervisors sees the officer turning in a report with all that information on it, it'll be hard for it not to be classified as a theft. The last thing it is lost property. It's not lost, its stolen.
If you do pay insurance on the phone, I can't see why it wouldn't be covered.
I had this same problem years back I was replacing a damaged dash and it was taken off my front porch...i have a ups driver who helped me out. He got me a copy of the record where no one signed for the package and i kept a copy of the sticky saying it was left on my porch....i sent them in to t-mobile and it took a few extra weeks but i did receive that dash i was replacing..
Thanks for the help guys. I called the cops. Since I didn't take delivery it still isn't my property. So they can't write me a report. Tmobile will have to dialled 911 on this one it seems.
Ups customer service was no help either. Supervisor said that it was left on the front door and its not their fault, its tmobiles for not asking for a signature with delivery.
By friday I will know what the end result will be, ill report then with their findings.

I was actually pretty paranoid about this, so I asked T-mo if they could mark the package as signature required (preordered from corporate). I was surprised that the sales rep actually had to ask a manager if this was possible, only to say it is not possible and that if there were any problems I should call them. Pretty surprising that they have no qualms about letting a $500 package be delivered without signature confirmation.
My brother works for tmo and is getting phones sent to his house all the time. One time my phone broke so the new one was sent to his address because I'm under his employee plan. I went to his house to pick up the phone and there was a guy sitting in his truck in front of the house on the phone. When he saw me walk to my bros house he looked surprised and asked me if joshua lived there. I don't know anyone by that name so I told him and he left. 10 minutes later ups shows up.
Now this would be a coinsidense but the next time I had a phone sent to my brothers house I got there and the same truck was there but as soon as the guy saw me he hung up the phone and took off. Sure enough ups arrived within 15 minutes. It seems some ups drivers will tell there buddies when a phone is being delivered (as the boxes say tmobile or htc on them) so that as soon as they delivered them to the house (which their trucks are tracked by gps so they HAVE to go to the location) their buddy grabs the box and leaves.
The driver gets to say it was delivered and then the problem lies with the person who ordered the phone. Shady stuff man.
Lesson learned always be there when a phone is being shipped.

Place an order for some gel cases and put some hidden cameras out in front and around your house. Could be fun.
I also like to have stuff delivered to work because I know it will be safe. however, t-mobile said they could only ship it to my home address. when I saw the UPS truck outside, I went out to meet the guy, and he actually asked me for ID. he said, this is a phone so I wanna make sure the right person gets it. I was thankful that he was being conscientious about it. too bad they don't all make that effort.
That sucks. I feel for you.
I recently added my mother to my account and we got her a free, plain jane flip phone. When we ordered it, it said that someone would need to sign for it. Of course my wife and I work so they left the sticky note and I picked it up at the distribution center. When I got the pre ordered, not even released yet, top of the line G2, they just left it on the porch. I don't know, seemed backwards to me.
Damn, sorry man. That really isn't cool. I recently had USPS "lose" my G2 while trying to have it returned. Still haven't heard anything about where it is. Looks like I'll have to file a claim which a lot of people here say USPS claims can take months. I had $500 in insurance, but it's still a pain in the ass. Now I'm not only weary of USPS, but T-Mobile and UPS. T-Mobile would NOT let me return the phone at a store since I pre-ordered. I will never pre-order anything from T-Mobile again.

FYI the shipper decides if signature confirmation is required (and if so, they pay extra.) Your only recourse is if a signature was required, but they dropped it off anyway. If so, UPS has to prove who signed for the package.
T-Mobile always flags *MY* packages as signature required. I don't see how this wouldn't be a company-wide policy.
To answer the question of how they know if your friends have it, when I worked as a csr I saw a few cases like that. Every phone shipped they have the imei for, if it activates on the system they know the phone number it activated on. If the number that activated it is in your call records the conclusion is that you know the person that has it. That kind of fraud came to my attention once or twice a month so pretty regularly. It sucks that a few dishonest people muck up what should be a simple process.

Hi guys,
New to the forum having just spent a few pound coins on a streak, its locked to o2 at the minute but i want to use it on orange, i have searched online and found numerous places that will unlock it for £20+, just wondered has anyone got a tried and tested method from anywhere with a link if possible?
Looking forward to testing this out as to be honest never knew they existed until i was looking for a cheaper alternative to the SGN which is too expensive for me at the moment, i have seen all the custom rom stuff but not sure i am confident enough to do something like that, but all advice is welcome.
So anyway hello to all
Regards

Hi there,
Like yourself, my Streak is locked to o2. People around here said they have got their Streak's unlocked for free by emailing certain companies, even Dell themselves. This has not worked for me, even trying to sugar talk O2 hasn't worked!
R.e custom roms, it took me a while to try and comprehend things and sometimes, despite all the amazing work that people do on here, its not the most inexperienced friendly place. But eventually I got there, plucked up the courage to fiddle around and I haven't looked back since.
When things like "getting used to using fastboot" are said, it really is that. the more you try things the easier they get.

I'm totally scared of "bricking" my phone, i have asked o2 and they are sending me a sim card that i have to put £15 credit on and the make a call or send a text so it registers with them, then go on there website and fill out the unlock form, apparently it can take up to 7 days but then its officially unlocked.........so they reckon!!!!
Well to unlock you need a code, so not sure how a new sim would unlock it. Am I missing something?
That's because they need the phone to register on their network at least once, because as per their policy they only unlock phones that are active on their network. However, a lot of us did get our phones unlocked without being on their network! Heck, I'm not even in the UK! I sent multiple emails to [email protected] and after nearly two months of emails back and forth, I got lucky and got a guy who finally gave me the unlock code. I remember a lot of us getting the codes around the same time. I would assume it would be easier for them to give you the codes now, but there's only one way to find out, I guess! Email them the IMEI number. If they refuse to unlock it, wait a couple of days and send an email again!

O2 seem to have this fixation about not unlocking phones, well as i said to the customer services bloke i can understand a brand new phone not being unlocked, but why a phone thats not exactly brand new? Anyway as i had been through the whole online chat with an o2 guru who told me order a sim top it up to the tune of £15 and then fill out the unlock form, hey presto unlock code in 7 days, then i had an email to say they wouldn't unlock the phone as it wasn't registered on the network.....jeus i said i topped up £20 notes made a few calls sent a few texts and it still wasn't registered? Well then the customer service bloke had the cheek to tell me that i spoke to the o2 guru after i had topped up so it was my fault that i had basically spent £20 on a top up for no reason.....but ahhhh i had the chat transcript sent to me via email so i had proof this guy told me the procedure before i bought the top up, so then it all changed ohh well ok let me speak to me line manager he said, so 5 minutes later he comes back and says as a gesture of goodwill they will send me the unlock code like they are doing me a favour but still charging for lol, anyway suffice to say, i am waiting for the unlock code which they say will be here within 7 days, so guys if you want your streak unlocked from o2 persist with the harassment, just make sure you get the transcripts sent to your email as o2 are obviously a little economical with the truth!!!
i got a streak that had a cracked screen from a fellow member here...
after replacing the screen, and inserting my sim, i realize it's locked...
he said it's at&t...
i tried contacting a couple of people on ebay with the imei, and service tag too, but they returned my payment stating code not found...
the imei is clear, no issues.. is there another way to verify what network is it locked to?
i'm in india, so no way to check/verify t-mobile, at&t blah blah...
also, would spending 29$ be my only way of unlocking it?
thanks

anyone here on at&t who could obtain the same for me?
i'd be willing to add like 10$ for the person....
Hello everyone.
The past few months I have spent so much time on fighting this case against Simply Electronics that I feel that I have obtained a PhD in their case.
I will try to help anyone who has been cheated by those scams, on how to recover their money back and believe me, it is possible. You only need a lot of patience and effort and time to spend on taking the actions I will outline.
The first, most important step is to avoid them. Don't get tricked by the feedback and reviews that you see because you fell into the same trap that I fell, which is believing that their biggest scam is delaying to send your order. Believe me, their biggest scam is not that they will delay a month to send your order. It's much more complicated. Here is what they usually do to cheat you:
1) Send the wrong model in order to make you return it
2) Send a defective item
3) Their stock is from Asia and they don't come with European warranty. Also, some electronic devices such as HTC phones may be loaded with Asian firmware which cannot be changed even after you unlock the bootloader. That was the case with HTC One X. You could flash a custom ROM but the underlying fw was still Asian.
Anyway, keeping in mind the above, their aim is to make you send the item back and then forget the refund. You get into a complicated procedure by which they usually manage to trick the intermediate services like Paypal, ending up with keeping your money and your purchased item. Don't give up though. Even after months you can keep fighting them and at the end you will win. They want you to get disappointed and abandon your efforts.
A few other details:
They are a Honk Kong based compay but they operate through a logistics office in London from where they dispatch the orders. Hence the delays. In this way all legal aspects get lost between the 2 companies and the European consumer services get confused and abandon. That was their idea I guess in managing their malicious actions.
Steps to get once you discover you were cheated:
As I said, the best way is to avoid them. and there are many reasons for this as I explained above. Even if you decide not to return them any items back, the facts I outloned above should still stop you from buying. If you have already sined, use the advices below:
1) Gather all your documents with the communication you had with them and convert them into pdf files. Also gather any proofing document like post office slips and do the same. Royal mail in the UK can email you the document of receipt showing their signature if you call them on telephone. Even that may not be evidence for Paypal but don't worry, it's more than enough for the police. After you have gathered all those details, get prepared to spend a lot of time on the computer in filing reports
2a) If the payment was made through moneybookers (you will see their name on the email you received from them when you purchased, you are lucky. Even after a few months you can report the case here: www.moneybookers.com and they will return your money
2b) If you have made your transaction with Paypal, open a dispute there. Don't let your hopes with them though as they may be affiliates. They are not better in any way and if you try to speak with them you will start hitting your head on the wall. Most propably you will fail here because they will trick those monkeys easily. I don't know but Paypal either employes 8 year onld kids or talking monkeys. Full stop. After you fail here, or if you have not used Paypal, go to next step.
3) After you fail, you will have 10 days to appeal their decission and provide further details but there is hardly any chance they will help you. Try though but if you fail on teh appeal as well don't spend any more time with them and don't try to communicate with them because you will get very frustrated from their answers. Now, try to find out if you paid from your Paypal balance (if you have money from selling items on eBay like me), or if the money was taken from your Bank credit card. If the money was from taken from the credit card, you are lucky. I was not because I was stupid enough to leave the money in PP instead of transferring them to credit card instead. So, if you were lucky, contact you bank and ask them for the procedure to start a chargeback. Most propably they will ask you to fill in a report and attach all the documents you gathered on step 1. I am sure that your case will end here and you will get your money back in 1-2 months through your bank. After that, Paypal will start running after you and begging you to return the money back otherwise they will close your account. Don't pay much atention, I did it 2ce and they haven't closed my account so far (I don't know what will happen with this case now though). If they do so, ignore them. Let them close your account but in the meantime withdraw all your money from your credit card and make sure there are no money there to take back. You don't need them, Trust me. Who needs them if they haven't managed to help you. You only need your bank. Now, if you have been stupid like me and you left all your money in Paypal and paid with that balance, much work is waiting for you:
4) Report to your country's local consumer center. If you are in the EU, then they can push some pressure on them through the EU protocols. Don't expect too much help here as they will get lost with the complexity of their structure. Remember, they are Hong Kong based with UK logisticks but it's the HK company that keeps the money so the legislation says that you have to report to HK instead of the EU. This step and the next, you can do them in parallel. In all cases, make sure to provide all the documents you gathered at step 1.
4a) Report to your local police authority and EU consumer service but again don't expect too much. At those 2 steps, make sure to accuse the UK logistics office who keep the return item and not the HK business for which they have no juristiction.
5) The last 2 will fail but the next 2 will save you. That could be after several months though. Continue sending emails to SE and keep them filed. They will be very careful with their replies because they know that you may be gathering info. Don't waste your time with theratenings like I did because they don't seem to count for them. They only respond to actions and not to cheap talk. Be very careful with your last 2 steps as they are the ones to save you:
5a) File your claim at the Hong Kong police: http://www.police.gov.hk/ppp_en/index.html
5b) File your claim at the Hong Kong consumer service: http://www.consumer.org.hk/website/ws_en/
Believe me, the HK police and consumer service will take this very seriously so try to be as descriptive as you can. I started receiving emails from them right afterwards and they were keeping me informed with the actions taken. All letters sent to SE were also forwarded to me. They also sent me letters in written at home. Do you want to compare the same report with UK? (right after filing my complaint at UK police and UK consumer council, I received an email telling me not to expect any repl or action from them because they are busy and that my case will just be filed for refference. Now I want to ask you. Who should be more busy, UK police or HK police? think)
A few weeks after this, SE changed their pattern of replies. Before, they were jerking me and telling me to go and ask my money from Paypal. After the police aproached them, they sent me a few apologetic emails and confirmation that they will refund me. I didn't believe them after what I have passed through with them but a couple of weeks later, a manual full refund was received. Ok, I lost some money which were taken as Paypal fees but that was better than nothing. I also managed to take some money from chargeback (the amount that was taken from my card instead of PP balance) and now PP is running after me for this. Now they remembered what is right and what is wrong and they ask me to return the chargeback money. Where were they when they had to play the role of judge and they partnered with teh crooks. I don't care now, let them give their fight and take thm back. I'm not going to make it easy for them. SE has not returned the money because they are honest but because they were forced to do so. I will do the same.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I just realised that it took me almost 1:30 hours to write this down but I hope it will help others. I have seen posts from hundreds of desperate people who don't know what to do and most of them abandon their efforts and lose their money.
Please, if you find any people who need help, point them here. Let's not allow those bastards to cheat any more inocent people.
Good job Sir

Well done and written.
Thanks for the helpful & detailed guide!
I just wanted to warn anyone looking to SIM Unlock their device to be wary of using an XDA member with the e-mail address of [email protected]. I found him on here and attempted to use his services, with him even stating beforehand if it didn't work, I'd be refunded. Off course it eventually didn't work and after figuring this information out, this person has been M.I.A. since. Refusing to email back or, more importantly, refund my money. This is just my personal experience, and others may have differed, but I wanted to make this information available to avoid anyone else having their money stolen.
Thanks. Scammers should get a real job. Heard mcdonalds is hiring
