why I always have phone process memory 20 to 30 MB free.. though i use task killer within 5 min it from 60 MB it goes to 20 MB please help my phone always slows down.
This is on my Xperia X8
At first there is no need to use task killer apps since the android software is smart enough to do this job on its own, from my experience only thing you get from task killers is to drain your battery faster...
On topic now, what rom you have on your phone now? Stock Rom or some custom? you tried to install app2SD so that you be able to move apps in SD? Have you uninstalled any factory apps that you dont need?
In my phone that is running Stock Rom atm. i uninstalled more than 10 factory apps and managed to have free memory +-100 MB
in any case check these threads so that you know what you need

Err dude..i think OP ask about free Memory or in other words RAM not storage..try watchdog..able to set blacklist for an app..which mean if u want that app only used 10% of ur ram..and if the app used 11%..watchdog will kill it automatically
+ 1 for kecil ...or it can be increased with task killer apps.find it on the market
i will try this..thanks for ur help.
but still it was help full...i am using stock rom & app 2 sd but i scare to do this. ..
i have some question
1)which is fully working custom rom ?
2) how can i go back to stock rom
3) app 2sd will it affect my app performance?

Download autoruns, run it and then your opinion about how smart android is will change.
Task killer is a must have app from my point of view.

1. if you talk about FULLY, its still bugs on customs. but the less bugs is MiniCM
2. back up your system using xrecovery before you apply custom ROM, then you will be able to restore it later
3. no effect, it just remain on your SD

So, as Froyo is slowly becoming the standard around here, I thought I would post a few workarounds for some of the problems that people are having with Froyo and the wide selections of Froyo ROMS to choose from. I put this list together, as these problems I see coming up in many of the Froyo ROM threads.
So, I ll start with a few of the most common ones, and will add to this list later.
Issue -My apps are appearing twice in the ADW apps launcher after moving them to the SD card! (Froyo apps2sd)
Workaround-It seems almost everytime I reboot the phone that Im getting the apps appearing twice. If you uninstall ADW, and then reinstall it, then it stops. So what I ve done for the time being is to install ADW new, get all the widgets and apps you want on the home screen, and then go into the restore and backup settings in ADW launcher. Make a backup of your ADW settings and of your homescreens and save those to your sd card (it does this automatically). Then, the next time you need to reboot your phone and you see double apps coming up, just go into ADW settings and "Restore" your settings for the launcher and homescreens. Then the double apps go away, your settings are retained, and your apps and widgets are back on your homescreen.
If your using the same apps and widgets all the time, its probably a good idea to do a Nandroid after you ve done this, and to save the 2 ADW save files stored on your sd card just in case you ever want to quickly restore your settings again.
Issue- Froyo apps2sd is rubbish! I only have 40mb left on internal storage! I want the old apps2sd back!!
Workaround- First off, I have to admit that at first I didn’t like the new Froyo apps2sd. But actually now, I like it more, due to the fact that you don’t need an EXT or swap (meaning MORE SPEED), AND coupled with the fact theres a very easy way to get FOUR TIMES MORE STORAGE than the 40mb (estimate for 115 apps) that you have left. The solution? Easy..all you have to do is go into your ROMS settings, and “move dalvik to cache”. To put it simply, I have 117 apps installed on my phone. After I moved them all to the sd card, I had 40mb left. I then went into the spare parts on Emonthers ROM, and enabled “dalvik on cache”. I then rebooted, and VOILA…137mb free internal space.
I cant confirm that all ROMS have this option, but if your ROM does have it, it’s the way to go. From what I ve read (please correct me if im wrong), this space is allocated mostly for OTA updates. As most of us here have root, why not use that space to free up some internal memory! After doing this, my phone is running VERY fast and smooth.
Issue- My phone keeps rebooting at the load screen! HELP!!
Workaround -This commonly occurs if you didn’t wipe properly when coming from another ROM. If this is happening to you, you ll need to:
Pull your battery to get the loops to stop
Reboot into recovery
Do a full wipe, then if you have an ext partition wipe that. Also wipe cache and dalvik settings. This is very important. Then flash your ROM. Your Bootloops should then stop. And remember, if your partioning your card, remember to REPAIR EXT PARTITIONS. This is VERY important and will save you lots of grief.
Issue- When I record video my phone reboots! HELP!
Workaround- This means you haven’t installed the Froyo radio. You ll need to be sure you have either flashed the zip version of the Froyo radio or installed the image (Cyan says installing the image is safer. Im sure hes probably right, but I can confirm I have flashed the zip version of the radio and it works fine).
Issue-I don’t know which apps to install to the sd card and which I should leave on the phone! AAARRGGHH!
Workaround- From what I have read, what you ll want to leave on the phone are:
Widgets, apps that have widgets that you use, keyboards, and system apps. I also keep my sms app on the phone, although Im sure it will work fine on the SD card.
Issue- I just flashed a new ROM, and now the app launcher is all slow! Whats up with that??
Workaround- This is most likely because your apps are being automatically redownloaded and installed. This is a feature of Android that was added to Eclaire that allows Google (with your permission) to backup your settings (apps, wifi key, ect). Give the phone a minute and you ll see in your app launcher that your apps are being added automatically! When its done, you ll get a notification that says “ “X” number of apps reinstalled. Saves you time and work, and now your launcher will stop lagging.
Issue- There are so many Froyo ROMS! Which one is the best one!??!
Workaround- This is like asking if basketball is cooler than football. In short: it’s a matter of opinion. I can however share my findings so far.
Cyan6- We all know the quality of Cyan and TeamDouches work. When there ROMS go stable, they..well…they JUST WORK GREAT. Cyans ROMS are always very detailed and COMPLETE (trackball lights, wallpapers, advanced options) Right now, for me the ROM is still very buggy, so I would give it the number 3 spot.
RoDrIgUeZsTyLe- If you like overclocking and speed, this ROM is a winner! His ROMS have a lot of kernel options and overclocking enhancements, and are fairly stable. Very recommended.
Enomther- At this very moment, this ROM takes the cake and is easily my number 1 pick. Stable, fast, TONS of enhanced features and extra settings, and I can honestly say I haven’t had one FC yet. I can understand why hes one of the top dogs here. His newest ROM has been an AWESOME Froyo experience for me, and I ll be sticking with him until Cyan goes stable.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHER FROYO ROMS. THESE ARE JUST THE ONES THAT I HAD THE BEST EXPERIENCES WITH. YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE MAY VARY!! THE DEVS HERE ALL DO GREAT WORK, AND THIS IS BY NO MEANS SAYING THAT ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER!
Anyway, that’s all I have for now. I hope this helps out, and I ll be adding to this thread as more common problems come to me. I hope it helps someone out, and I really hope it saves our awesome devs some time from answering questions. After all, it takes time creating all the awesomeness that they bring!

Quite possibly yes. Try deleting that folder, rebooting, and then try to install. Make sure the folder doesnt reappear after reboot. If it does, try just deleting it and then downloading and installing an app.
Also, be sure to let me know if it works, so that I can add it to the thread.
thank you for the information. I would suggest that you try Leo Froyo. Very stable and full of options.

Are u using the old apps2sd or the new? I read in another thread that deleting this folder was allowing some to download apps after deleting it. I personally haven't had his problem, but ill search around to see if I can find a workaround.
Download this file here and make sure it doesn't have .txt as file ext, but .xml instead. Rename if necessary.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6602402&postcount=8
Then follow this instruction.

If it doesn't work, you most likely don't have the shared_prefs folder. So just create one.
Hope it helps. Good luck.

LOL. Yes, I know what the new Froyo apps to sd is I asked because in many of the Froyo ROMS you have the possibility to choose between the new implemented from Google apps2sd or the old style apps2sd that we seen in builds prior to Froyo.
Have you given rjhay22's suggestion a try? Please let me know if it fixes so that I can get it added to the original post.

Never seen any of these problems... Apps2SD is okay, just more apps need to support it.. I have 4-5 5M+ apps which don't, and it'd help a lot if they did. I'm sitting around 30M free after clearing browser cache with a ton of apps installed on my stock OTA.

well if you have the mod install location app you can force the option to allow apps to be moved to SD

Hey,
So, I checked out both Swiftdroid 2.0 M6 and Joestone's AOSP Gingerbread 2.3.2. I've always noted that even though both these ROMs are noticeably faster, they still lagged while switching apps or when multiple apps at the same time when compared to the stock 2.1.
When I was playing around with Advanced Task Killer, I was surprised to find out that the native 2.1 has around 80-90MB of free RAM after you kill all appslisted by default in Advanced Task Killer. When you try the same thing in Swiftdroid, it gives only 40MB of RAM. And, Joestone's version gives only 60MB.
This is another proof that benchmarks are not everything. Real life performance is difference from benchmark scores.
Is there's a way to increase the free RAM?
I saw a 2.2 ROM which had around 110MB free RAM. But, it was the only one. No other choices. I tried odexing Joe's gingerbread but it didn't give the boost I wanted.
Perhaps Mur4ik can create another modified KDZ? Is it possible to reallocate the NAND chip such that there's more RAM?
Am curious. When you increase SWAP too much, the phone becomes sluggish. Why do you guys try to push the swap to SD while you can create it in internal memory which has better access speeds?
Update
Solutions:
You can try,
Odexing the ROM for more free RAM
Editing the minfree using Auto Memory Manager
SuperChargerv6 Script to modify minfree and apply some more tweaks.
You can use Autostarts to prevent unused widgets from updating and prevent unnecassary apps from starting automatically
You can use swap. Slightly slow but a great alternative

It was like you said. I got upto 80MB free in Advanced Task Killer after clearing the dalvik cache.
I like to upload an odexed version for recovery but my internet is slow and would take around 4 hours for an upload(assuming the upload doesn't break). So, instead, I'll put together the scripts I used for odexing and instructions to odex by tonight.
Maybe it's because swiftdroid (or any others 2.1+ rom) keeps some apps unkillable. Maybe like home launcher, messaging, dialer, etc can't be close using task killer. Don't know for sure though, I don't have problems switching apps.
N remember, u don't need task killer in 2.1+ roms, well except for gaming when u need all the horse power and for kill "naughty" apps which I prefer to kill via running service.
And no, u can't put swap in nand (internal storage) because it's irreplaceable and the highly usage of it because of swap can reduce its lifetime. As far as I know, gt540 has different chip for ram which has to be more durable than the nand

I know that we don't need a Task Killer even in pre-2.1. Android's memory management is pretty good. But, sometimes, the phone acts dumb trying to be smarter than us. xD
I used Task Killer as a measure to see how much memory I could get with default settings. Advanced Task Killer ignores Launcher, core, phone etc by default.
Putting swap on internal shouldn't shorten its life that much. Usually, the internal NAND is pretty good. They usually have the quality of RAM rather than that of SD. And, both the RAM and ROM are NAND. NAND is an architecture. It basically uses NAND transistors.

I guess it's 256MB of which 167MB is useable. The rest goes to hardware drivers etc.

here's i think it's the best way:
create swap partition in ur sdcard. best way (for me) is to create it via recovery (cwm). dont forget to backup ur sdcard first.
then type in cmd (or terminal emulator):
Code:
adb shell (or su if in terminal emulator)
echo "#!/system/bin/sh" >> /data/local/userinit.sh
echo "swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p3" >> /data/local/userinit.sh
chmod 0755 /data/local/userinit.sh
mmcblk0p3 means the swap partition is in 3rd partition (fat partition, ext, and then swap, if u dont have swap (fat then swap partition only) use mmcblk0p2
reboot, then type "free" in terminal emulator.
u can use swapper though (by making swap partition first, then configured swapper to use it), the advantage is u can configure the swappiness (number of file that goes to swap), but for me, swapper taking some amount of ram, and i think it's not good.
Is it possible to give mybe little more simplified instructions think I stuffed it up so did a wipe and going to try again also mur4iks custom kdz rom the partition one is it best to install that first? Or will swap be fine without it
Sent from my GT540 using XDA App
Use swapper 2 from market. Use mini partition tool to create a swap partition in your SD. Search around. You'll find plenty of resources. SWAP would not modify system. Only the SD. It is not a matter which ROM as long as they support swap. If you are on swiftdroid, toto settings > cyanogenmod settings > performance.

Also, seems like there are apps like TaskManager and DLNA I am unable either to kill and force close.

Have you tried Supercharger script ? You won't have such an issue, and that is specially noticable on stock rom.
You can use freeze function in Titanium backup making the apps invisible to system.
@NITRO: seems a nice solution, where do I find it?
@Vicsa: that worked for a couple of apps actually, so thanks!

if u dont want to take the pain to supercharge your phone then u can try "auto memory manager" and apply the aggressive mode. That shud help.

I use ZDBox and periodically do a "kill all", but seems to have no effect.

no that does not work,
apparantly you have no knowledge in linux based systems,
there are no known infectious android viruses yet,
there are such thing as rootkits and adware but all they do is steal info and make you click things,
as for the OP,
your system seems to be loaded with apps,
try uninstalling apps,
sometimes apps run in the background without you knowing it causing strain to the CPU thus making the phone lag

1. the more apps installed on my phone = the more memory is consume ? the faster my battery drains ?
2. if i root my S4 and then delete all unwanted apps came with it, both Samsung's and cellular provider's, do i risk stability of the S4 by that ?
3. regarding the former question, if i go to app manager and disable apps i do not like or use, do i risk stability of the S4 by that ?
p.s. i do not like to root my S4 at this time... seems unnecessary to me

1. Depends on what app u installed. Some will autostartup and run in the background. Some won't. You can use Greenify (requires root) to hibernate the apps.
2. If you're talking about bloatwares, then no stability wont be affected. If you're talking about some system apps like the default Samsung Music etc, then yes it might affect stability.
3. I use TitaniumBackup to freeze or uninstall apps. Becareful of what you freeze. Freezing certain system apps will disable certain features and might cause stability issue.
There are many ways you can deal with bloatware.
1. First and fastest is to simply flash a clean efficient new ROM like CM.
If u wana keep the Samsung looks and functionality the u need to stick with stock, in this case u need root and
2. u can manualy uninstall the system apps u dont want or need
3. THe last and best way imo is to use a script like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307355 that will clean a lot of bloatware apps without risking your ROM stability
Hey folks!
TrulyClean is a "any rom" script that removes A LOT of crap-apps (98+ apps removed) and other stuff on the phone.
Script will remove about 600mb since version 1.3 (Counted by removing from stock firmware.)
The purpose is to give you a clean start with no extras, much like the Nexus series experience but with the Samsung core intact.
All bloatware apps will be removed running the default script. I even count apps like S Voice and Samsung Hub as unnecessary apps.
Neither do I use Earth or Google+ and don't like these apps to be forced upon me as system apps when they are so easy to install from Play store!
It might be illusion but... I found my phone booting faster and running snappier with after applying this script.
Also, I don't have to cry anymore while checking the apps in the /system folder.
