Royalginger1.6 MT4G radio status indicator. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before i say anything i want to say that this is an absolutely amazing rom. I have been experimenting with a lot lately and this is by far the fastest and smoothest i have had the pleasure of working with. But i just wanted to let the devs know that the radio status indicator is still not fixed on 1.6. As you can see in the speed test 3g is displayed in the top right hand corner, but it is clearly running at HSDPA speeds. Again i love this rom and this very small problem would never turn me away from it just wanted to bring it to their attention.

When i had the myTouch 3g, I was able to get 4mb down 1mb up. Just fyi.

So if rom has nothing to do with radio...

Answer me this question... I was on Damage 2.1 Eris leak rom and running fresh's latest radio update and was struggling to get 2-3 bars of EV and after flashing back to 1.5(Gumbo's Bare version) to be exact, i am now getting almost full EV signal steadily I never had an issue getting 1X reception obviously as that's the basic coverage. Not that i'm complaining but what gives? I flashed back planning on following Avalaunch's tip to go back to 1.5 to update prl automatically and then nandroid back to 2.1. This occurred before i did any such update however...
1. Bars mean nothing.
2. Damage only maxes out at 4 bars.
MENU -> SETTINGS -> ABOUT PHONE -> NETWORK
Look at the signal strength here to see what it really is. Don't trust the bars, the bars are a lie! (like the cake)

I apologize I forgot to mention that I did verify in network status so i verified my dBm value is steadily lower(better) -85 to be exact than it was with damage(-95 dBm) on average. and actually i flashed a different task bar on Damage that showed the original 6 bars which is where i'm drawing my observation from.
Actually, I'm with OP on this subject. I tested every 2.1 ROM with the new Radio. I flashed to 1.5 to update the profile and PRL, and then flashed back to 2.1. I then flashed back to 1.5 because I wanted to use Darkstar (theme). Now, you may or may not know, but every 2.1 ROM and Darkstar both use 4 bars. Well, in 1.5 I almost ALWAYS have more bars compared to the 2.1 ROM's. I even confirmed my signal by looking the Network settings menu.

That i can't verify. I would think since it's 2.1 as well it should but i make no claims... nandroid nd try is all i can say. But it definitely gives u a level field for comparing signal reception between roms since it's the same icon as stock.
I've been playing around with all the posted mods and themes under the Hero CDMA forums and unless I'm mistaken all of the taskbars with a 6 signal indicator are nothing more than a remapped 4 signal indicator so you will never see any odd number of signal bars.
Also, it's possible that differences in signal between 1.5 and 2.1 could could have to with the epst.apk. I noticed I can access and modify programming through ##3282# just fine under 1.5 but under 2.1 I always get a FC.

I don't think that taskbar will work with Darch since it is Legend based and that is a droid eris based task bar (I'm running it as well)
when you guys flash back to 1.5 what are you wiping? ext/dalivik only? just curious

Performance Test of Different Radio Versions[New Results by solidmac]

EDIT:
Huge thanks to solidmac for contributing his/her test result:

-------------
Hi everyone.
There are currently three different versions of radios available for Nexus One Froyo roms.
I conducted a test on all these 3 versions: 4.06, 5.08 and 5.12, and I would like to share my test result.
Link to test result:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ah8PsMa_NqfedERnUmtBWWdJc19OR3lGcmhvR2psMHc&hl=en
(All using unit kBps, kilo-byte-per-second)
My test strategy:
Test both 2G and H data speed.
Phone is put very close to window, no finger is touching on it during each test.
Results provided by SpeedTest.net application.
Default DNS server is used.
Tests were conducted consecutively.
Very poor results (2 occurrences,once with 508 H, once with 512 2G) are dropped.
About Phone:
Nexus One, purchased on 2nd March
CM6 110022010-nightly
Kernel: 2.6.35-7 925mV CFS AVS AIX 720p-Monks-103010
Environmental information:
Cheltenham, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia,
Cloudy, light wind, no rain,
Full bars signal during testing,
Yes Optus mobile company, APN selected to Yes Internet.
Thank you. I was surprised by these results, but its good to finally se some sort of comparison between the radios...
great data!
thx for the data and now i'm kinda regret flashing 5.12 lol
Interesting....nice to see the comparison stats! thanks
Flashing 512 isn't all that bad it has much better ping results meaning it reaches the website first than all the other ones now the only down side is the marginal dl speed

That seems to confirm the results I got from switching the radios around.
I'm sticking with the latest though as it's not clear what other changes have been made, but I ten to believe that newer should be better
Base on the test i wonder if the newer radio only mean for the korean network.
Anyway any data for wifi connection?

I actually thought about testing wifi performance
but that probably won't reflex real radio performance since wifi performance is very constant for me no matter which version of radio i use.
also although 4.06 radio gives sometimes better performance, but I feel 5.12 has significant lower power consumption compare to 4.06
these radios show a difference under bad conditions.. OP if you could run an other test in a bad area or create a bad area ( putting the phone in a weak signal area 2-3 bars ) should show clearer results
Great Works, and now I know how to select radio.

In terms of the ping results you HAVE to omit those 999s, thats not an actual reading of 999, thats saying the reading was 999+ which is not a finite number, so you cant take an average of it.
You've also got such wild spikes of 80% on the H download speeds that, not to put a downer on things, but the results are statistically worthless. You'd have to do a way bigger sample than that.
Since flashing 5.12, I've hardly ever dropped below 3G. I don't really care if it's faster/slower than the others, what matters to me is consistency...
I guess the point I'm making is that you may also wish to look at large packets of data (say 100mb) over a longer duration, and see those kind of results, also?
Of course, network, network loading, location, weather, etc all throw in variables that you can't account for. Only many statistical samples over time can help smooth out the anomolies.
Perhaps my nuclear engineering side is showing?

Haha, well you ARE correct though, network is inconsistent, especially when there are lots of people using data on the same antenna as you...causes a saturation in the spectrum and slows down speeds...
But I second that...do another test with bigger files (if you ever do another test )
thanks everyone
next time when I get large amount of mobile data I'll test again.
I went ahead and did one today hope it provides enough information if you guys have any questions please ask i will try to provide an answer.
Nexus one 5.08 vs 5.12
Nice chart, decided to stick with 4.06_07
Very brave of you to try all the radios
4xx.x version have bad ping scores compared to the newer versions. So pages queue up faster and search and voice to text are analyzed faster. Also the newer radios are more stable with their speeds especially in the wifi and 3g.

Hey mate
thanks for your test result
but i was wondering, why do you have test result on 5.09 radio.. did it work on Nexus One? I thought 509 radio was for Desire
I think that was just a typo. Should be 5.08

Radio, Rom, Kernel, Theme, Etc.

It's been a minute since I've used my dinc because I have been using my Thunderbolt almost exclusively.. soooo I was wondering what you guys are using or think is the best combo. Radio I'm the most curious about!
Love being back on the dinc due to its nice and small size!!
Thanks

My general advice; go with older stuff. With the exception of a few ROMs, the current crop appears to be some seriously jury rigged work that just barely works. I've yet to install ANY AOSP ROM that didn't end up self-destructing or failing from the first boot. I think WildStang ROMs are probably the best pieces of work currently out if stability and functionality are features that impress you.
Dude try joelz runnymede 3D Rom with radio 08.08 and tinys gingersense kernel. I'm loving this and think u will too.

All the Sense 3.0 ROMs run like molasses in January; SLOW as hell! 3D sure as hell isn't doing it any favors.
I'm using CM7 latest nightly, radio 11.x and tiny's incredikernel (10/8)
CM7 = It's quick, easily customization with android kitchen and with LP+ and custom dock it looks pretty snazzy
radio 11x = After trying all the radio's I find this one the most battery efficient, the GPS locks quick and data rate is excellent
( Note that differences between radio's are typically very small, I do believe this one is big enough to have me keep using it. Decide for yourself, everyone seems to have their own opinion on which is best )
tiny's incredikenel (10/8) = I actually just downloaded this one so not much of a review, but the quick charge and also the quick charge USB are big helps, not to mention custom voltages if you want to save a little bit more battery

Yes, that is the specific radio.
I have installed cm7.1 update and have tried every fix/ patch I can find in these forums to correct this horrible radio problem...I can't seem to get over two bars at any given spot. I have tried glazing new kernals, prl, radio, etc...what is the best combination to run cm7.1...any help with this would greatly. Be appreciated....thanks in advance....oh ya I was having problems with wireless tethering. Also but was able to fix that with placing a tether folder in root that was missing

The sense roms' signal bars are a little more generous than aosp. go to settings about phone and status and look at the dBm's for an accurate reading of signal strength.
On cm7 I usually stay between one and two bars, whereas on sense I would read up to four in the same areas, with the same dBm reading (no difference in actual signal strength).
I'm sitting at -94 to -97 dbm and 0asu....is that about normal?....I switched to a savage kernal the other day which seems to be helping other issues but radio is still an issue ...thanks for your help
sent from my Narly turbocharged EVO running CM7.1 with 22 lbs. of boost
what i'm trying to get across is that you don't have a radio issue. The same dBm will show more bars on a sense ROM than an aosp one.
If you'd like, flash a sense ROM and an aosp one. Then take an average in the same area over a period of time of what you're dBm's are. You shouldn't see much of a difference because roms have nothing to do with signal strength.
Edit: there us no 'normal' dBm number because there are so many variables to signal strength (distance from tower, humidity, elevation etc.). If you start to drop calls then you have a problem, if not, you're fine.
Gotcha....thanks for the insight!!!

Yeah you're not going to drop a call or get slow data from that, it is rather low though but nothing to worry about. Once it goes past 100 you should start to worry but again it'd still have to be significantly lower for all the bad stuff to start happening.
Besides all that, what makes you think this is a radio problem instead of just not-so-great coverage?
Just had some issues with wifi, calls, 3g/4g coverage , market connection( even on wifi)

Diff Roms Give Diff Signal Strength??

Is this true or not? Ive been jumping from Swagged out, MIUI, to IC7 and it seems diff roms give diff signal strength...In one area where I hardly ever could even get 1X signal with the IC7 Rom I actually had a 1X signal...???
Aosp shows true signal strength. For example 2 bars on a aosp rom could show up as full bars on a sense rom
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
is that also true for WIFI?
I can attest to the fact that I too get better signal on Sense Roms then on ASOP roms...
However...have been testing evodeck's ICS (ASOP) rom...and I am getting some great signal that rival gingerbread's signal....so maybe it's not so much a sense vs ASOP problem with gingerbread...
just a thought
what I get from my laptop on evodeck ICS using wireless tether
True, if ur looking for sense base...ice cream sense v1.1 3g/4g is amazing...right along with everything else
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Guys im not talking about how many bars it shows or any of that...Im saying when I was on one ROM I got ZERO signal (no service) but in that SAME area with a different ROM I got 1X and Even 3g?! Is that possible that diff ROM can give you a signal while another might not in a specific area????

Actually, AOSP Shows Data, Sense shows Signal
How many bars it has doesn't necessarily show how strong of a signal you are getting. Some ROMs take in to account the signal to noise ratio, signal strength, etc. so there will be some differences there.

Any way to boost wifi tx Power on ICS rom's?

Ok, not sure if my phone is faulty or if the mt4g's wifi tx power is too low as default, or if it's the rom or what. But, does anyone know if our wifi chips support tx power scaling at all, and how exactly to boost the power successfully? Not sure if this method changes between GB or ICS, but if anyone knows, please help a guy out? I've tried editing the iwconfig and twlan.ini to no avail. Am I missing something?

No the wifi on this phone just sucks.
So you know for a fact you can't adjust tx power, or are you just blindly saying it sucks like I am?

I would never take it for a fact but after what over 2 years with this phone I have never seen a way to boost it. Some sense ROMs feel like they have better wifi at the cost of battery life. But after two months of testing in my basement apartment I was never able to find a consistent setting/ROM that worked best. I have read a few post that say the very original stock ROM had the best wifi as well as working 5ghz but HTC messed that up with the gingerbread update.
That's pretty much what I'm learning as we speak. Oh well, its new phone time soon anyway.

Speaking totally anecdotally: I am finding that with most ICS/JB ROMs I've used (about six so far) the reported signal falls off a lot more drastically than with stock, Unity, and other GB ROMs--the difference (in my home) between being able to listen to music down a hallway and around a corner or not. This *seems* to indicate that it could be improved with configuration in the kernel or ROM to boost the allowed power. Some ROMs experience more instability in connection quality if you have custom firmware on your router or have early versions of the wi-fi calling fixes patched in, too.
