An app for the iPhone that simulates a lighter. Yup, you heard that right. So why is it all the rage in Europe and Japan? Read on.
This is insane.
iPhone users all over Europe and Japan have been going ga-ga over a new app released by a company called Smule. Basically, "Sonic Lighter" is software that displays a virtual lighter on your iPhone; with e-flames blazing on your phone's screen. And yes, the flame "sways" depending on how you move your phone. The main attraction though is something else.
The app is location-aware: if you choose, you can display your location on a virtual globe. When you do so, and when you run the app, you show up as a flame shaped blip on this map. The more you run the app, the more "kilojoules" you burn -- which further brightens your area on the globe. When you're done for the day, just blow on the microphone to "extinguish" the flame. For those who think it's not cool enough, you can ignite other lighters on iPhones near you.
Not satisfied? Have a look at this:

WILL IT BE AVAILABLE FOR OUR HTC TOUCH DIAMOND????

I'd like my phone to take care of the kitchen
well thats useless .. but also fun! .. i put these apps from time to time to have fun with my little brother & sister lol
i wouldnt mind to get this app on my diamond
The brilliant thing is, is that the Diamond is perfectly capable of doing this is someone was willing to create the application. The only reason we don't see as many cool applications as there are for the iPhone, is because there is little to no advertising to draw the consumers in, and there's no officially released SDK for the sensors on the Diamond.
The Diamond does actually havemore hardware based sensors than the iPhone does, and it also has the added advantage of being able to run programs made by any random user with a compiler handy.
Just FYI...
Reminiscent of my Diamond, when actively using the HD for a prolonged period, the battery area heats up almost as much as on the Diamond (plus I swear I just noticed a little screen dimming/flicker on it a short while ago - exactly as my Diamond does!)
It's not something that, on it's own, bothers me enough to attempt a re-flash (on the diamond anyway, given I'm not really very au fait with such things and really don't want to brick it...) but something I know was addressed in some of the cooked ROM's for that - so I guess you guys want to hear about issues with the HD/Blackstone as well.
This happened on my old Kaiser too, often if it was being used as a GPS for any prolonged period - it seems to be an issue with the Qualcomm chipset, and it's pretty shameful that it's still occuring on brand new devices. I don't think it's very healthy at all - overheating like this could easily shorten the lives of other electronic components even if the chip itself can take it, and it will be bad (potentially even dangerous) for the battery as well. There's some very poor hardware design going on here somewhere.
This also happens on my asus p750, so i think it is normal that devices get hot when you use gps or hsdpa.
OK
I agree this phenomen only occur using GPS.
But happens on all the hTC device with builtin GPS like Cruise,Dimond and now Blackstone.Don't know is this very healthy for the device.
Well I hate to say it, but my iPhone never runs hot, despite having a faster processor inside. It's not good enough to say "it's fast so of course it gets hot" - they could have put a Core 2 Duo in there and that'd be really fast, but it would also catch fire after a couple of minutes. The trick with mobile processors is to make them run fast enough, and cool enough, to do the job safely and well - and I think HTC (or perhaps Qualcomm) are pushing that margin too far, somewhere along the line.
Make no mistake, everytime it overheats like that, it's having a big knock on effect on your battery's health, and on the lifespan of various other components inside.

Not strange, just common sense. Every component has an operating temperature range, and the closer it gets to the top of that range, the more strain it's being put under.
You seriously think that HTC puts out devices, that they haven't tested for operating within a safe temperature range?
Click to collapse
No, of course not, they have to gain FCC approval after all. They'll be within safe ranges, and there'll be a designed-in behaviours for when those ranges are exceeded (eg immediate shutdown), but that doesn't mean these are the best possible hardware designs or that these operating temperatures are particularly healthy for the device's longevity, it just means they aren't going to explode. Probably.
I really don't think unless the back of the device doesn't get REALLY HOT, that this will influence the device lifetime in any way.
Click to collapse
"REALLY HOT" is a pretty subjective measurement - I'd say my Kaiser did get "REALLY HOT" on some occasions, and there was an immediate influence on the device's behaviour like apparent battery drain when this happened. I wasn't alone in experiencing it either. As far as its longer lifetime goes, then of course it has an effect. The battery chemistry in particular is very sensitive to temperature extremes.
I got a T60p notebook, which runs very warm under load. If you put your hand on its back you feel it's really, really warm there. That notebook runs absolutely fine for 3 years now. No problems what so ever.
Click to collapse
That's a notebook - it has an active cooling system that draws cooler air over the surrounding components, and vents hotter air out the side. More than that it's also much larger with much more space in and around the components to allow the heat to dissipate. Phones like the Touch HD have none of that - not even a sidevent let alone a fan, and zero empty space inside - meaning pretty much 100% of that excess heat is being absorbed by all the other components. Not healthy, and not good hardware design - there's a reason why your T60p would never have been designed that way.

if you do a search online you will find out that apple downclocked a perfectly good 667MHz cpu to 400 MHz. On top of that, the reason it runs cool and seemingly running fast is because it's 400MHz for only one program (there is no multitasking, except core applications that came with apple). Also iphone's GPS doesn't update as fast I blieve 1Hz, instead of 5Hz.
ah yes - foolish apple for underclocking that chip and producing a phone which runs perfectly cool, and still faster than any WM device I've ever used. If only they used overstretched Qualcomm chips instead, eh ?)
Say what you like about the Iphone, but the Qualcomm processors HTC have wedded themselves to are junk, plain and simple.
As for the GPS and multitasking - well the GPS seems to be far more sensitive to movement than my old Tytn II was so I doubt what you say is true, but if it is then clearly HTC's hardware advantage is getting lost somewhere in poor software. Multitasking - well the iPhone multitasks as much as my kaiser ever did, given that I was always precious about closing background apps down anyway to save battery life and memory - the iPhone still does it's phone thing in the background of whatever I'm doing, still plays music while I write an email, all that kind of stuff - and it's still much, much faster at doing anything than the kaiser ever was, despite the "same" 400mhz processor.

Still i dont understand why you people worry about longivity, since is more likely you're gonna change the phone to the 2nd-3rd newer model availabe, if not the next one.
The devices get hot because they offer so many features (eg multitasking) and I am sure they would run within specs. So far I havent heard anyone saying that any HTC device caught fire.
btw iPhone sucks!!! Unless you want a toy, WM devices are mostly business oriented even though they do most of the things that iPhones do.

Plus htc give you a 2 year warranty.
For the past 4 weeks I had HTC send me 2 replacement batteries and T-mobile sent me two replacement phones (one with a new battery), and my phone still overheats (over 100 degrees).
I swaping all my microsdhc and even took it out, and did notsolve the problem either.
The only thing left is the Sim card. Is it possible for a sim card to cause this? This is getting extremely frustrating.
The good thing is both HTC and TMobile have been really understanding, if not...I would be on other carrier with a different phone.
Jason
The sim is just a storage chip with a tiny amount of data on.. it doesn't actively do anything. It must be caused by something else.. is your phone overheating while charging or connected by usb, or does it happen all the time?
Only when I use the phone (talk, gps, edge, or wifi...FYI, I'm only running one at a time) it overheats.
Anyway, I just got my new sim and the back looks differnet than the one I got in November.
I have to say my phone runs cooler w/o the sim.
If you want to monitor the temp of your phone, download the Y-mobile "My Account" from the market, and check the battery status.
Jason
My phone is always over 100 degrees F, right now it's 102 and reaches over 112 easily
It seems pretty normal to me, the phone never shuts off or anything
My biggest regret is how slow this stupid thing is, you figure it being able to cook eggs would mean it's got some nice horsepower but this thing makes me wish I waited for the new palm OS

It also LOVES to double post as you can see
That's a triple post.....
Nah, I made that last post afterwards I didn't edit the post, although I wouldn't be surprised to hit a triple or even the elusive "super-quad" with this dumb thing
same problem here
I was going through the same thing. I mostly ran into this when I was using my fone as a thether. I kinda got worried so I contacted tmo andhtc and they said that it will get hot like that because of the wifi running as well as my screen never timing out. To top it all I was tethering through the usb. So it easly ran up to 115F. When it got that high I would jus bull out the battery and leave the back off for about 5 mins. If u run into this issue while ur fone is doing little or no activity then worry but if ur using data or multiple apps at once then its no biggie.
Aw jeez, I went to check setcpu and my post went bye bye
So a high temp all the time ISN'T normal?
I got:
JF 1.51 ADP
SetCPU 128/528
Advanced Task Manager, and I tend to keep everything killed besides aHome and Better Keyboard
I don't see any problems besides it giving me third degree burns and setting whatever I place it on on fire, goes slow hot or cold too
SetCPU
128/528 is a big jump, why not use default 384/528? Might help some of your performance issues.
Just a thought.
I thought it scaled itself accordingly and only went to 128 when I'm not running anything or the screen's off to save battery?

It doesnt scale instantly.. cyanogen's done some init.rc mods to help this in his newer builds but theres always a reaction time between opening an app and the speed ramping up.

What new palmOS?
PalmOS is dead and isn't coming back unless someone picks up Access Linux (which is said to have a palmOS Garnet 6 VM only for legacy palmOS support), but that doesn't seem likely as they've been pushing it as stable for years and have yet to sell it to anybody. It is now also pointless to support legacy palmos apps since *virtually nobody* has been developing for that platform since it died a few years ago.
This new thing that palm is selling... is not palmos. Its "webos" and is basically what apple phone v1 was and what chromeos sounds like it will be... i.e. no locally installed apps (except phone stuff) - all apps are net apps.

While I doubt it's the cause of the overheating, SIM chips are more than just passive storage. They do contain processors and can perform calculations (one of the main functions of SIMs in phones is to provide cryptographic computation for network access.

Overheating
My phone got up to 102 once. It was from having it set at 583 MHz constant. I took it out of my pocket and almost dropped it because it was hot. Also as someone said earlier, it gets very hot while tethering. Any prolonged data use will cause it to heat up. I don't think it's really anything to worry about though. I'd imagine that it would cut off before any sort of damage could occur
Hi guys!
I had (well stiill have it somewhere) an old HTC wizard and i loved it, XDAdevs helped me a lot with it but well, i needed and upgrade so I bought a Nokia 5800XM. Im happy with it, but now I have the opportunity to change it for an HTC dream, and Id really like to go back to HTC and I dont like symbian very much, Id like to give droid a try.
Yes, I did use the search, i thought there would be some thread like this (since they are similar devices and were released very close) but I couldnt find any.
So, I did comparisons between their specs, and for what i see, the main differences are, dream has qwerty keyboard (big plus, i dont like touch keyboards), capacitive screen (so i guess it means multitouch, vs 5800s resistive), 500something mhz and 192mb ram (5800= 128 ram 400something processor, not big difference but it is something) and hmmm, dont know i got lost.
The 5800 is a bit smaller, has a better screen (360x640 16M, vs Dreams 320x480 65K), FM radio, 3.5 jack (i dont know what kind of plug the dream uses, i would like to know please), TV out, more battery time, better camera (carl zeiss, flash (i use it as a flashlight and works really good), and secondary camera for videocall).. and i think thats it.
Now, you guys, as users, what would you recommend? well if im asking here i guess most of you would go for the dream, but please, tell me ANYTHING, EVERYTHING i should know before making the swap..
is accelerometer good? is GPS good? (my 5800 works fine, but it takes 10 minutes to find satellites so it makes it kind of useless for short trips through the city, it might be because im in Argentina tho)
what about music/video playback? build quality?
If you think i forgot something, or that there is anything i should know before going through with the swap, please let me know! also when im doing the exchange if i decide to go through with it, what should i check is ok and test so i dont get scammed with a broken device?
Sorry if its too long, hope you read it, and that you would help me! Im counting on you guys
Thanks!
You can have the most advanced hardware in the world, but with crap software, it is still junk. Dream is BY FAR the superior.

Capacitive does NOT mean "multitouch". It means it has a HARD surface designed for use with your fingers. Resistive is a SOFT surface requiring (for proper use) a stylus.

Make sure it turns on and boots up. If it gets stuck rather than booting up, then it could have been bricked. Some people will do stupid things, like installing 1.33.2005 SPL and end up with a non-functional device.

The camera works not too bad all things considered. I caught some pictures of a fox snooping around my house a few months ago, turned out nice, but taken outdoors in daylight. LED flashes don't work well -- they just don't give you the same kind of output that a proper flash will, so trying to use it in a dark and psychedelic place won't be yielding very good of results.

Just some words upon the topic: HTC Dream last official firmware is Android 1.6 Donut - it has no multitouch feature. But you can quite easily install Android 2.2 Froyo (CyanogenMOD e.g.) - it has such functionality. As the example, i can say that while navigating through picture gallery you can zoom in and out the image with two fingers movement - and it really works...
GPS: it takes one or two minutes outdoors to catch the satellites without AGPS.

if a "normal" person asked me what i would recommend, i would suggest they get the 5800.
me? im happy with my g1, i just need to find the right rom for me and also a high capacity non-extended battery. im getting one of those adapters this weekend
Hi jinxie
Have you got your new battery? seems like the 1700mAh battery is the largest that conforms to the original form factor.
For myself, I'm thinking of going with a remote that has a 3.5mm headphone port, probably HTC RC E100, instead of one of those multi port USB adapters.
I'm curious to know which ROM you went with?
hey!
i am just ordering the battery right now.. but intl delivery sucks big time for latin america.. so I will tell you in a month lol
about the adapter, i wanted it because the guy who i made the trade with forgot to give me the headphones that come with the device, but now i have them, and i must say im impressed, despite the looks they fit really well (and thats an issue for me, headphones often fall from my ears, but not these), and sound quality is great, even music with heavy bass sounds good, so i think im gonna stick with these for a while..
and about the rom, im open to suggestions, havent found what im looking for yet, CM6 didnt work for me, im currently using biffmod but not happy with it neither, i wanted to try superF, but im not sure if all the issues it had are fixed yet, also i was waiting for the OTA release, so there must be some new stuff now, but actually what i was really looking for was an equivalent for the dream of the milestone's eclairless, i want the most RAM available i can get without the hack (im rethinking that), im really sick of FCs.
i might flash something today as i came to XDA today to look for a ROM, hope i find sth interesting.. what are you using?
I broke my last dream going from CM6.0.0 to biff's. I did manage to get another second hand dream, in good condition, of craig's list and i'm going to chill on rooting for now.
So, did you order a battery that requires a special back cover? For myself, I ordered the 1700mAh battery, just because I really like my case and I wouldn't be able to use my case with one of the super sized batteries that change the form factor.
I really miss having the music controls on the lockscreen and I can't seem to get that feature,at least for free, on cupcake with the stock music app, so I ordered a remote with headphones because, the stock HTC headphones, though sound awesome but are too big for my ears, and keep falling out. With this remote, since it has a 3.5mm jack, I should be able to use my favorite earbuds from sony, that is if I don't like the ones that come with my order.
I attached a picture of the remote / headphones
The most annoying thing I'm finding, is only having sixty megs or so, for apps, and not being able to remove the stock stuff included that I don't use, like Quickoffice, and such.
yeah i saw that remote, looks cool, but i heard that it might not work depending on the rom youre using.. or sth like that, look it up here in the accesories forum..
how did you "break" it? didnt you just brick it? im sure theres some way to recover it.. but tell me how you did it because i dont want to do the same.
still havent flashed anything new yet, since with the low bat life i get im not using the phone that much, but i might try the new cyanogen 6.1.. but im not sure yet..
btw yes i also ordered the 1700mah, the pohne is big and heavy as it is, with an extended battery i might aswell buy a netbook :/
chences are that you will get your bat way before i get mine, so tell me how much more juice you get from it!
edit: so finally today i flashed chromatic 3.9.1.1 (eclair)
so far so good, very fast, i changed adw launcher for launcher pro, now i want to remove all the extra stuff i dont need/use. then lets see how it goes with all my apps loaded, lets give it a few days
here's my post from the CM forum: regarding my broken Dream. I believe there is a JTAG solution, but I figured just get another used for cheap instead of taking the nonbooting dream apart, buying the necessary equipment, learning how to fix it, or getting someone else to, etc. now I'm using it as an extra charger.
The remote I order wasn't the one I really wanted, but it's coming with the earbuds I prefer, instead of the stock ones that are way too big for my ears.
If I still have this phone, I might get one of the 2850mAh batteries just to see if I can get a full days use on a single charge. But I'm thinking of getting a HTC Desire Z from bell off contract, and using it with rogers.
As in the title, anybody have loads of glue residue on the screen after taking off the screen plastic?
Got mine today and have just spent an hour getting it all off, though there's still residue left. I've never experienced this before on a new phone.

That sucks. Sounds like it spent some time in a hot environment that made the adhesive gooey. I hope that doesn't happen with mine (when I get one).

Yeah, a bit disappointing, it took that new phone feeling away a bit. On the plus side though, now I've played around with the phone, I'm really enjoying it. It's very fast and I've not come across any bugs so far.

Yeah, that's no fun. Good news on the rest though. How is the cell signal? That was my big concern with the Axon 7. Actually my current motoXP gets pretty mediocre reception and GPS signal losses too. I heard battery life was just epic. One reviewer got 11 hours of SOT!! I'll be happy if I can even manage half of that with one given the heavy navigation I use daily.

So far no trouble with signal, on EE in the UK, but not gone anywhere atm. I want to test wifi notifications when it's deep sleep, because the max 2 has trouble with that.
No problem with mine. Every thing perfect until now.
I guess mine was one off since no one else reporting it, I've certainly not seen it before. It's almost as the plastic screen protector was re glued on.

Nice to hear that you enjoy your new device!
As the specs and the price are really astonishing, I am also thinking about ordering it. For me only one question is left open: does the Le Pro 3 really have a NFC chip (like stated in the specs)?
Could you maybe just shortly try to install any NFC reader app (like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nxp.taginfolite) and test if it works? (I am a developer working with NFC, so missing NFC would be a deal-breaker for me.)
Many thanks in advance!

Good morning. I have installed that app in my phone. It sais to turn my NFC. I did It and now It opens but i have no idea how to use It or work. If only was to open the app, yes It opens.
Yes NFC seems to work, I shared a web page with another phone.

Thanks to both of you!
@sytayeth: using the Taginfo app you just installed you can try to read any NFC capable smartcards (for example: tap'n'pay banking cards, or wireless access cards, etc.). Just take any NFC card and hold it to the back of your phone while the app is opened. Also if you have 2 NFC capable Android phones you can send the content displayed on one device to the other, just by holding them close to each other (back to back).
"NFC" stands for near field communication and is a wireless standard for small distances, usually only a few centimeters.
Btw, is there anywhere any ROM for this phone available for download? I would like to unpack it and check which NFC drivers it uses (to find out which NFC chipset they use).
[update]
I already found 2 download links to two different ROMs here on XDA (and looked into them):
Chinese/English Stock ROM
A shop ROM apparently packed by grossoshop.net (according to the link-URL and the included bootscreen)
