original roms dont seem to suffer from these issues.
every custom rom i tried(nand and SD) had same issues after battery went dead.
isnt there a safety shutdown feature that can be added to prevent this?
Nand roms shouldn't be so bad, I have run my battery dead a bunch of times on my phone with UD 3.0.0 RC1, and never has it caused a problem. But running the battery dead on an SD build is where you can get big problems, because the entire system loads from the SD card, and by letting the battery run dead, Android doesn't get a chance to unload properly, as the card is still being written to when shutdown takes place, alot of the time corrupting the sd card or the Android directory or the data.img

The issue isnt the ROMs, its a MAGLDR bug. Phone cant charge under magldr.
Workaround: Boot into MAGLDR and then into CWM. Charges under CWM.
OR
Change from MAGLDR to CLK

Wasn't the question...
Anyway, some apps store data on the sd card, when it shuts down suddenly due to empty battery, this data can get corrupted (That's why most roms don't use DATA2Ext but App2SD+, to prevent this). That's why most (if not, all) NAND Roms don't have this issue (at least, It never occurred to me) but SD roms do, as huggs explained.
isnt it possible to make an app that shuts off the phone i nstead of letting it die?
I use an ext4 with DarkTremor's A2SD script and never had corruption from running out of battery. I could just be lucky, idk.

man this is BS it has to be plugged inconstantly in order to keep it alive its like my sony laptop with a 2.4 ghz pentium processor and bigass screen.
the battery only lasted 3 hours.
i go to work and leave the phone untouched for the whole day the battery goes to half thats the ONLY way i can make it last till the end of work day.
if i even think about txting or writing an email or god forbid browse internet that **** drops to almost dead batery instantly.
and sometimes i dont have a charger so the phone dies because it cant shut down on its own.
and to add to that theres a GREAT!!!!! feature that conveniently turns the screen on and turns off all the power saving features such as dim screen.
so it turns the phone on starts buzzing and screen on full brightness, to let me know that my battery is dying WTF really???

We at XDA made Android available for an aging phone of yours at *NO COST* involved, If you have a problem live with it until we learn how to fix it. And if this seems too unbearable, just STFU and stay with HTC stock WM6.5 rom.
if you make a ruler you make it exact.
even if you give it away for free.
you dont make a ruler that measures 1 inch short...because people depend on it.
i just hate all these BS claims about the system beeing stable when its not even close.
i installed android because i thought it was ok for everyday use by someone that doesnt sit here on this board for hours trying to keep up to speed with all the latest updates.
im very happy that this android development extended the life of a factory crippled phone but dont tell me that im the only one having this issue.
u have no idea how many times this thing freezes up right when i need it. when im in the car driving and need to use google maps but cant because this **** is bugging out.
or now for example it doesnt even load up sense it gives me the com.htc.bgp force close.
im very fn tired of this loading and unloading of cooked roms and actually looking for a phone that came with android.
like i said if you make something, EVEN IF ITS FREE, you are still responsible for making it work because people depend on it. and i dont have 2-3 hours a day to spend reading through this board trying to make my phone work again.
you can hate me or disagree i dont give a faq this is my opinion.

Wow, you're an ungrateful bastard (to quote the 'you are a noob on XDA Developers video) IMO. How can you not appreciate what the Devs here are doing? They put in hours and hours of work, and you still don't appreciate how brilliant it has made the HD2?! Please, make us a perfect ROM, and share it with us, so that you can show us your perfect skills. Don't you read up on the issues of each ROM before flashing it?
Also, the system is EXTREMELY stable. My CM7 HD2 is far faster than my friend's DesHD. I get better battery life and it's just faster in general. You should really be more appreciative of the hard work of the brilliant devs here and also, before accusing people of BS and lying, think about whether it may be a problem with you.
Please, give your HD2 to someone with the mental capability to use it.

faulty phone/battery.
yea thats what comcast says every time i make a trouble call
oh ur modem is bad... only to find out that their network has problems again and again.
my battery is fine and so is the phone.
it worked without a hitch for 4-5 months untill battery died first time. since then the problems just been piling up.
and finally today it wouldnt even show the home screen.
so again for the 4th time i lost all my new contacts and whatever information i had on it because it cant shut down properly when its dead.
im picking up an htc sensation that has android already on it so i dont have to deal with this bs no more.
and **** you MR public defender i never said i hate the developers and in any way ungratefull. i was trying to figure out how to deal with this problem untill people started accusing me of beeing ungratefull.
i know what it takes to make this work and have alot of respect for people that do it. but you put urself in my shoes maybe for a second.
i have my office on this phone and whenver it doesnt work i cant do **** anymore.
i had txt messages, notes, phone numbers etc saved here that i wasnt able to recover and had to reset my phone in order to make it work again.
spent 5 hours trying to make it work since yesterday so now tell me how the faq am i supposed to feel after dealing with this crap.
i switched to this phone because everyone claims its STABLE. yea stable untill your battery dies and then **** starts happening...
i went through 6 different roms that means every time i have to spend hours setting my customizations etc and saving the data that i have on it.
how convenient is that.
beeing faster doesnt mean its more stable btw...

I got my HD2 a month or so ago after waiting about as long to get it.
my first call with it, was to tech support.. and things never really got better..
the amount of time Ive spent on the phone with tech support would probably be measured in days.
the list is..
Battery loasts about 12 hours of normal use.. I.E. i take it off the charger at 8am 3g enabled.. some light browsing, and 20 or so miniutes worth the talk time throughout the day.. no navigation.. no movies.. by 8pm or there abouts i start getting warnings to plug it in to avoid possable data loss.. its dead..
never stays on network.. i reboot the phone perhaps a dozen or so times a day.. the internet just flat out quits.. it says I have 3g.. but web pages wont load, and my messaging app (palringo) wont connect.. reboot.. and it works.. for a while.. maybe 5 min maybe 2 hours..
i have mail!!! no i dont.. in fact i dont even have mail setup on the phone, but none the less, it always says I have 1 new mail.. go figure..
sometimes after a reboot the green light keeps blinking, like i have a sms or something, i have no messages.. reboot the phone again.. and its gone
the speaker phone quits working if I dial 611... the customer care app they have on there screws it up apparently (tier 2 support told me the app causes it) reboot the phone.. and it works again.. till i diall 611 that is.
they have had me do the master reset 4 times
reinstall the update 3 times (despite the phone already being "up to date when i got it"
and take the battery out more times than i can count.
needless to say, i haven't installed much of anything on the phone.. considering the next master reset is only a day or so away usually.
Tell me this is an anomaly, tell me the next one will be better, tell me this phone does not suck this bad.
phone doesn't suck, it's juct the techie or whoever put the stock ROM and/or initial settings. T-Mobile?

Only if you sit on my face and tell me that you love me, ROFL .
Seriously though, i've not had any major problems with my Leo. I have had to hard reset it once but that was my own fault. I also have found that the newer roms (1.66wwe, 2.10 tmous or 3.01 based custom roms) have less issues. This also goes for the radio roms. The newer ones (2.10.50.xx and 2.11.50.20 <-- only use that with 3.01 or higher roms) are better for performance and battery life than older ones. You may just need to take a leap of faith and go down the custom route.
I know this may sound like a steep learningcurve, but read how to flash a ROM and put something better software on it. This should solve most of the problems.
However... Perhaps wait for some more comments first, as ROM flashing, despite causing few problems and being reversible, can infringe your manufacturer's warranty and if this is a hardware problem, I don't want you to lose your rights.
(Tip: Try EnergyRom, I'm not saying it's the best, jsut that I'm using it at the moment and can say the current release is nice and stable)

I'll second that. I actually did a lot of research before i flash my first custom rom (which happened to be the latest 23569 energy rom) and i would definitely say it is the best out there (especially in standard sense guise) and i'd recommend it to anyone looking to flash their first custom rom.
Alternatively, if, like me, you are afraid of going through the difficult process of getting a new ROM here, just follow the straight-forward way of doing it officially trough HTC's website.
They have ROM upgrades for O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone. I haven't done it yet because l'm waiting for my laptop to be returned from the repair shop. I guess HTC ROM's are not as good as the many you can get from here.
The 'official' ones are bloated with lots of unecessary stuff while the 'cooked' ones have all the essentials + added & tuned functionality. Just be very careful and do not brick your HD2. It is a very good phone when it behaves properly.
Try & download an excellent reset .cab (Touch X Reset) from this forum; it will save you a lot of time because you'll not need to constantly remove the back cover & the battery. Good luck.

i hope this that you mean you are getting a new one. sounds like your device is a lemon. i agree with the posters above that you should try flashing a new rom; really if you read a lot beforehand there is little chance of bricking your phone and what do you have to lose? you can always go back to stock. but personally, the device should work out of the box. flashing should simply be an option to make it better. you should not have to flash a new custom rom just to make the thing work (e.g. doing the basics - like make phone calls, etc.)
so next time when you are about to do a master reset, read and flash a new rom. maybe it will be the cure. but if you have a warranty i would return the sucker and get one that can do what you are paying for it to do.
cheers.
Hi, a couple of points worth noting.
If you are in an area where the signal from your provider is very poor, ie almost non-existent, the phone will be constantly try to log-in to the network. This will drastically reduce your battery life.
Also, when there is no network it can sometimes show the 3G symbol in the status bar making you think you have somehow managed to achieve the impossible but Opera will stay blank.
Hi
I've been reading xda threads for long now and I have always wondered if there was a way to transform a smartphone into a basic phone. Let me explain myself.
I own an HTC HD2 and I'm really satisfied with it's big screen, power, ... I live in a house with electricity cool and thus charging it every 1 or 2 days is not a real problem. But once a while I have to live a fews days or a week without electricity (for example holidays like a one week camping), but I still have to receive a few important phone calls.
I'm using Android right now and this led me to think of a linux build (for example launched from WM) that would only enable us to browse our contacts directory and manage phone calls. The interface would be very simple, without beautiful effects, and I guess it would be possible for the battery to last very long this way, since most of the apps launched on powerful OS would not even be included. There would be not slidings, no transparency, and everything that require power.
I'm sorry if such a topic exists but I took some time to search and nothing appeared. And please don't replay "It is not the purpose of smartphones" since I know that, I've made a choice and I'm satisfied, but I just want to know if there's a way to make it even better.
I'm not (yet?) a developer so what I ask might be unrealistic, but I'm convinced this idea could be useful to most people. There could also be other ways to achieve this, like another OS or just a WM mode...
Don't you think it would be great to be able to switch to this when long battery life is needed ?

Hello,
That is actually quite interesting, but the first time I have heard of such a query in the 9 months this phone has been released.
Just out of interest, have you tried running the phone with just the standard WM interface to see how long the battery lasts?
Alternative solutions:
1 - You could always try wind-up, or solar charger.
2 - buy the cheapest PAYG phone you can get (on your network)and put your HD2 SIM in it.. These tend to last quite a few days on standby and you don't really care if it gets bashed or wet.

you can turn Sense off in Settings/More/Today,
and according to BattClock power consumption on my Leo (YMMV) is:
Sense: 100-300 mA
Windows Default: 42 mA
Turning off sense would give you a noticable amount of battery life......
The sense interface is a hungry hungry beast........
The linux idea is nice but the problem is that it would be running on top of windows and therefore not save any battery.........
Luckily I still have my trusty (4 days without a charge) N95........
The old girl still comes in handy...

Whenever I break my good phone I just use a T-mobile PAYG phone until I can order a new phone. Or if I'm going camping or biking or something.
nice i will try to disable sense ! thanks for this tip
about linux, i believe i read that wm is completzly shut down when launching android (it only serves as a trigger ?)
Running SPB Mobile Shell, I lose 1% of battery life every 3 hours on standy. That's with data and wifi turned off and just the phone running. That would give me about 300 hours of standby time. In theory that should last you a week with a few short calls.
Problem with Android/Ubuntu on this phone right now is you have to run it off the sd card, which draws a lot more power. Whenever the screen is on it draws a lot of power anyway. The best I've done so far is 6% drain over 8 hours with just the phone running in standby.
The most obvious/best solution for you is to just bring an old dumb phone instead or as backup. Then you can just slip the sim card out and use that to make/receive calls.
This is not a troll posting. I swear...
I've had the AT&T flavored Nexus One since the day it was announced and I just can't suffer with it anymore. I'm running stock FRF91 with an unlocked bootloader. The only reason I unlocked the bootloader was so I could root and uninstall the apps that drained my battery or sucked resources that I never used - Twitter, Amazon-MP3, Genie-Widget, etc.
Pre-Froyo, it seemed pretty stable but the OS was very immature. Some things were just not well thought out. Activesync for example.
Post-Froyo: Turn on GPS, reboot. Talk on the phone for a long period of time, reboot. Charge the phone, reboot. Use Bluetooth, reboot. GPS is 100% useless now as after just a few minutes of use, the phone gets hot and reboots the phone. Hell, leave the phone in the sun in your car and it gets hot and reboots. Froyo offers some new features but some areas of the OS are still neglected and way behind where they should be. Can't move emails to a folder? Seriously? Can't undelete an email you accidentally deleted? That's just stupid. And there are a few other things that Windows Mobile had right for the last 10 years.
Yesterday alone, my phone rebooted several dozen times because I was trying to find a location with GPS and I was completely turned around with no idea where I was. I finally had to power off the phone, leave it off, and go ask someone at a gas station for directions. The phone reboots as soon as it gets hot and it appears everything makes the phone get hot.
Rip on Windows Mobile all you want, but I never once had a Windows Mobile device reboot on me and not do what it normally does. I'll throw CM6 on my N1 when it becomes final to see if things get better and I'll thrown on Gingerbread when that finally drops, but unless one of those solves the constant reboot issue, I'm done with Android. I've kept up with the Google forums and many, many, many people have the same issues I have so my N1 is obviously not an isolated case.
There are a lot of things I do like about Android so I'm not bashing Android. I like Android enough that if my phone didn't reboot constantly it'd be my primary platform moving forward.

I agree, the only time my phone gets hot is when I leave it in my landscaping truck while I'm mowing, but I think any phone would have problems when it's 112 degrees outside and probably 140 in the truck.
Sounds like a bad phone. The only time my N1 rebooted was when I had an experimental rom on it.
Sounds like something is just borked, I use my phone all day it only reboots because I want to go into recovery.
Are yur using custom recovery? Wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
Same as the above poster, mine never rebooted spontaneously even when hitting over 40C degrees. Only does so when I'm running some cutting-edge alpha kernels/ROMs, and then very rarely.
I was thinking it was specific to my device as well. I then googled "Nexus One overheating" and was overwhelmed by the number of people with the same issue. I also own over a dozen HTC devices, I've had ZERO problems with any of them. I've wiped my cache quite a few times. I've even wiped the phone and started fresh.
I've googled every specific issue I have had and found many others complaining about the same thing. Overheating/locking up the device when charging overnight - check. Rebooting/overheating when using GPS - check.
Lately, I've been uninstalling anything that runs in the background that isn't an essential part of the OS. Makes no difference. When I first got my N1, I used the GPS and Car Home app to drive an 8 hour trip. Not a single problem. The very first time I tried to use Car Home after going to Froyo it rebooted after just a few minutes and it's been that way since. I found MANY posts that confirmed this on Google's forums.
Personally, I think my device is fine. I suppose it's always possible that an app is causing the reboots. For example, the Weather Channel app is always running and that's not the most beautifully coded app I've ever seen...
Any suggestions, keep 'em coming. I'm not thrilled with Windows Mobile 7 yet.

By the sound of it, it's not an app. The phone should be able to take a good amount of heat and not reboot - the only time I got it to reboot was under direct sunlight in a car, it was probably hitting 50 degrees Celsius. If yours reboots every time you do anything - it's time to nandroid, take out the battery and clean the battery contacts really well (on the battery and the phone, using alcohol), flash a bone stock FRF91 or something really close to it, try to repeat the things that made it reboot (shouldn't be very difficult), and if the reboots continue - then I'm sorry, but you have a lemon. And if they don't - change to your favorite ROM and start incrementally installing stuff in small packs, until your testing shows reboots again. Defining anything other than Google account (like Exchange account) is also considered "installing something".
E-Mail quirks are taken care of by E-Mail clients. Exchange server push might be draining the hell out of your battery and heating your phone, check the relevant thread. I really hope you find the problem in SW, but it doesn't look very much like it.
P.S. There are so many ways to get a WinMo phone stuck (my wife has one, I regularly practice using the reset button when doing something with the system) it's not even funny.
thanks for the tips. I'll give them a shot. I read in a couple different threads that HTC has been sending replacement batteries to those with overheating issues. I have a hard time believing it's the battery but what do I know?
One thing I forgot to add about WinMo, I soft reset my device every morning on the way to work. Just a habit I got into with Windows.

Yeah sounds like you got a faulty device. If the above suggestions don't work, call HTC and they should do a swap for you
went to the Google "Device Troubleshooter" support page: http://google.com/support/android/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=185837
Step 1: What are you having an issue with?
selected: A hardware problem I'm having with the Nexus One
Step 2: A hardware problem i’m having with the Nexus One
selected: My device overheats
Then it said this:
It is normal for your phone to get warm after an extended period of continual usage, such as a long phone conversation. If your phone becomes so warm that you cannot hold it comfortably, please try removing the battery and waiting until the phone cools off before replacing it.
If your phone overheats to the point of shutting itself off repeatedly, there may be a hardware defect with your phone's battery. Please visit our warranty information page.

So I called support (open 7 days a week - nice) and they are shipping out a new battery tomorrow and if that doesn't work, I'll send it in for repair. Didn't want to replace it because it was engraved.
I really hope this fixes it. I do like Android and I love the community work. iOS blows and Windows Mobile 7 just doesn't have me wanting one.
I'll update this thread when the new battery arrives and if necessary, after the repair work...
I used to have the same problem, but i don't think it was rom specific for me. I had a black case on my phone and my car mount was a black universal one mounted on my windshield. I would use GPS nav and play music at the same time and sometimes make phone calls and it would reboot pretty frequently. Through SetCPU i noticed that the temp was somewhere between 45-50degrees C. only way i was able to use my phone was to remove the battery and stick it in my AC vent along with the phone itself.
So since then i got myself a AC mounted carmount and no longer use my case and its been fine ever since. When ever it gets hot in my car i usually have AC on and the phoen gets cooled by it also. Average temp was around 15-18degrees C while i was using GPS/Music/Calls.
lulz, sounds like your phone had a hardware issue if it was rebooting all the time like that.
I have had my phone on for literally weeks at a time with out a reboot. Android is rock solid stable.
Way to not get your issue fixed and go back to a dead mobile OS that was never developed properly in the first place. Good luck with that champ.
My phone could stab me in the balls all day long and I still wouldn't revert to the current winmo.

Fact: Windows Mobile still does several things much better than Android. And those things are important to me on my primary device.
I get what you're saying though. Despite a few issues, Android is dominating everything in it's wake. But instead of Android spending so much time with new flashy features, they should focus their attention getting the basics right first. Their contact and email handling B L O W S. How about proper email folder handling and a basic undelete function...
I agree with the rest. To be honest, I didn't get my Nexus new, it has had two users before me. It came with Cyanogen Mod, and to be honest I find it gives better battery life and performance compared to the stock OS. If I were you I'd try it out once you get the Nexus back.
I use ROM manager to download and install ROMs, give it a try.
First, I am straight vanilla on my EVO--stock ROM, no root, etc. But I have noticed a behavior pattern in Android that reminds me of Windows 95. I am not a heavy or light user, just standard. But I have noticed that after a month or so, the UI begins to get clunky or jerky or sporadic (put your own word here). But if I pull the battery for a complete restart, it runs as smooth as silk again for about another month, when I have to repeat the process.
This reminds me of the old days of Windows when even Microsoft recommended PC's and servers be periodically restarted to clean up memory issues.
You went a whole month without rebooting your phone??
I've noticed a little lag after a few days but I rarely go even that long without restarting for one reason or another. I always though periodically rebooting was just something that was good to do anyways.
That is pretty standard for smartphones. I restart mine every morning when I get out of bed.
the fact that you can go a full month without rebooting your smartphone says something I think.
Well, I haven't been tracking the interval on a calendar, but a month (plus or minus a week) seems about right. But I am astounded that this battery-pulling process is "common" knowledge or that anyone would would think that doing it every morning is an acceptable practice!! Seems that people that b*tch about wifi speeds and light leak would be putting a gun to their heads if they had to reboot every morning...LOL.
You are "stock" not "vanilla". The two are not interchangeable. Vanilla implies AOSP non-sense which is what you want if that ui is bogging you down. Try adw or launcher pro and that sense ui lag will be a thing of the past. A custom ROM like cm6, fresh, or baked snack will fix you right up.
Swyped on my EVO
I am pretty sure none of the people who answered pull the battery for a restart. It's as simple as getting a program (quickboot) from the market to do it or long press on the power button. That is not a hassle at all, and really, every smartphone should be rebboted from time to time. This phones are now mini computers and as such from time to time will need rebooting to keep things smooth.
+1, pulling the battery is not necessary to reboot. I don't know why Sprint would suggest that is any different than just rebooting..
whats the name of the App in the market that will reboot your phone for you at a specified time/date/interval?
I know its in the market (and requires root) but i cant remember the name

I saw the thread about someone asking if an app like that exists, I didn't think it had been made yet.
I can see how someone who is not rooted could go a month with out restarting there phone. I mean most of my restarts happen because i am flashing a new kernel or rom or some combination of the 2.
What others listed is true though almost all smart phones need a reboot from time to time. Even newer PCS with win 7 you should reboot now and then so this wasn't only windows 95.
Also as stated above you dont need to pull the battery just power down and power back on and you should be good to go.
I think having to reboot your phone is a ridiculous notion. Just because it has the functionality of a mini computer doesnt mean that shortcomings of computers should be forgiven...
I mean, hell, portable gaming systems are getting more and more popular, but no one says hey its okay for my ds to overheat because its becoming more like an xbox 360...

hahahahaha...
good one
a power cycle is unavoidable, thats when your system cleans up and wipes whatever isnt needed like temp files and what not, even regular cellphones from time to time require a restart, all computers require restart, what im more interested in is how android handles memory fragmentation, in ubuntu, they recently released a kernal upgrade that allowed for ubuntu to handle huge file sizes but now requires defrag to be able to compensate for fragmentation caused by using such large files and i was told that android has some sort of 2gig limitation on the overall os and i believe apps have a 15mb write limit or something of that sort, would that be to try and avoid memory fragmentation??

That's not a fair comparison at all. Overheating is something that can damage an electronic device. I've never heard of a phone getting damaged by rebooting it.
Hell, for all we know, the OP doesn't even need to reboot. Running a task kill might have been enough to fix his problems.
IDK about you guys, but my battery dies so often and quickly, I don't think I can go more than a day without it dying at least one...
Whats the big issue with restarting? Takes like 1 minute.
So, my phone has been running fine for weeks (it was at I think like 600+ hours uptime before I had to reboot it for the first time two days ago). I'm running Apex 1.4.1, with no custom modifications. I was using it one day, then a little later it just started freezing for several seconds anytime I tried to do anything, then unfreezing for a couple seconds, then freezing, etc. I rebooted it, then it was fine for a little while. Then I was texting someone back and forth for an hour or so, and all of a sudden it stopped sending my messages. I rebooted, and it was able to send again. Now today apparently she isn't getting them again, because she asked the same question I already replied to, over an hour later (I mean, she could have just not seen the reply, but with the other recent problems I'm not betting on it...).
Has anyone seen issues like this? Also, come to think of it, Yahoo Mail has been acting just retarded...it keeps disabling status bar notifications on its own (twice so far), but regardless, when it IS notified, it's not letting me know when I get new emails, I have to go in and look. My batteries been dying a LOT faster, and my data usage has been steadily climbing over the last couple days (I haven't downloaded anything, and my normal usage recently has only been very basic) and I have a feeling Yahoo Mail has been constantly trying to connect but failing, except for when I manually go into it? But that's just a guess.
This is all just bugging me, so any suggestions would be helpful. I can just backup my needed apps, wipe and re-flash Apex, but if anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks
Well I think you went wrong when you didn't shut it off for over 600 hours. Did you really need it to be on at that time? Even at night?
But anyway that's just my rant. Reflashing apex would be a good place to start. And make sure you just wipe everything. If that doesn't work, you may want to go completely back to stock and then back to apex
So you're saying this OS is not as stable as Windows? Because I've had Windows OS's stay running for months without issue. Gee, if Android isn't is good as Windows, maybe I should look into getting a WP7 phone... /sarcasm
If there aren't issues, then there's no reason to turn off your phone. Shutting it down at night is good if you don't want to charge it, but it really shouldn't be a requirement unless if Android isn't ready for prime-time (and no, I'm not saying that's the case). I had an issue, I rebooted, I had another issue, I rebooted, I had ANOTHER issue, rebooted, and so far it's been good since yesterday afternoon.
I really think it was the Yahoo Mail app though I don't know why it would have prevented sending text messages... I did a force stop, cleared it's data, removed it, rebooted, and then reinstalled the app. So far, it's been working OK from what I can tell. The data usage has slowed, battery life seems to be good again, and I'm getting notified of new Yahoo emails.
Actually I am not at all concerned with the software. I was talking about the hardware. Would you leave your computer running for 600+ hours?
Like I said, I have. My file server (Windows Server 2003) has been running (except for a few brief shutdowns for hardware upgrades/swaps) for over 2 years. My main PC (Windows 7) has been running, for the most part, except for a few times when I just felt like shutting it down, for probably the last 6 months.
Ok well if it works for you, then great keep doing it. But I'm just saying, as a computer guy, that is just a general bad idea
Nice to know, but I'm also a "computer guy" (professionally) and as a rule of thumb I keep my office computer on 24/7/365, as well as my home computers.

Since you are a computer guy, could you please explain how there aren't any adverse effects on your hardware from keeping it running? Primarily on the cpu and fans? No chance you could burn something out?

Why would you shut it off? I don't think leaving it on all the time is the issue. why shut your cell phone off? I think that's stupid. Then again I'm a midnighter so I guess things are different for me. I never shut off my cell phone or PC.

It's designed to run like that. I'm a big PC guy as well. I do a few custom builds here and there. Seriously turning it off and on all the time it going to cause more damage (especially to your HDD) then keeping it on all the time. It's like a car being in stop and go traffic versus highway mileage. I think the last time I shut my PC off was around Christmas cause I had to reformat and couldn't get it done before I went to work so since my network wasn't up yet no reason to keep it on.
Computers aren't like cars..."gunk" and "sludge" (and yes, I'm getting these highly technical terms from TV because I know crap about cars) don't build up in computers. Pieces wear out, sure. But that can happen just as easily from frequent turning on and off. Like I said, my two computers at home stay on almost constantly, and I don't exactly dust or vacuum frequently. The last thing I had to replace was in my gaming PC, and that was the video card since it was two years old and couldn't play Crysis 2 well enough.

I don't know much about cars either. Maybe I wasn't using the correct tone, but I actually agree with you. Like I had said in my post I keep my machines running 24/7 usually same with cell phone. I don't know crap about cars either the only reason I used the comparison is that wear and tear from city driving or stop and go traffic (when compared to turning your pc on and off frequently) is worse than freeway or long distance without stop driving (as referring to keeping your PC on) So yea we are pretty much saying the same thing
Hey thank you for explaining it to me this way. I never thought of it like that. You are probably right. Excuse me for just one more question though: would keeping it on all the time actually end up using more power than you would if you kept it off?

Well...yeah, obviously. But if someone tries to call me in the middle of the night for an emergency, and I don't get the call because my phone was off, well, that would suck. But with Apex, I've went to sleep on, for instance, 80% battery, woke up, and the battery still said 80%. As for my computers, well, yeah, that costs me a little more per month, but it's not breaking my bank, so it doesn't bother me.

Yea but honestly if your pc isn't super holy **** beast mode it isn't going to be that noticeable. I have a nice higher-end PC and it isn't that bad on my bill.
