For Users in the Ontario/ Greater Toronto Area - G2 and Desire Z General

Me and a friend have been noticing issues with Geolocation weather working properly on different weather based programs.
HTC Sense, Beautiful Widgets & Fancy widgets have all been giving us this issue, as well as I am running Bell, he is running on Rogers.
I am wondering if anyone has been having the same issues as us where the weather drops the location to just saying Ontario, rather then the actual area that you are in. Been noticing it for the past week or so now.

I havent noticed anything, but i have been using a different weather/clock app combo.. i am on telus and usually in the oshawa area. I will run afew days with the htc clock/weather app and see what happens.
Sent from my Virtuous Desire Z 1.0.2 using XDA App

I have been having the same issue. I set Toronto as a location so when I scroll down from the geo-location weather to Toronto the weather and forecast is identical. Based on this I assume the geo-location weather and location is correct, it just names the province instead of the city. I have a Desire Z running on Rogers with rmk's modified version of the leaked Sense Gingerbread Rom.

This problem started for me yesterday. I am running Beautiful widgets on Motorola Atrix.
It says Android Geolocation system may be down?

Alright thanks, nice to know I am not the only one with the issue

Missing apps from market

Hello,
Im new to android, and im having trouble finding some apps in the maket. its there any reason they might not show up? For example the live wallpaper Seed of life. and gameloft games like NOVA and gangstar.
thanks
Thats weird...
Try App Market on the phone?
Just bought my T-mobile Vibrant today and everything that I had my My-Touch 3g is on the market.
I've also had trouble finding a few live wallpapers in the market, even with QR codes. It seems the market thinks that the Vibrant isn't capable of running some apps.
Hopefully this will be fixed in the next few days.

[Q] Last time I checked..I lived in Nebraska

So, I was curious about my wifi tethering speeds..I hit up speedtest.net..
Why does my phone think that it is in Europe?
Pic related.
its not always where you live, my guess is the speedtest.net picks servers based on your isp, ping times, distance, loads, things like that
I don't put much faith in that app. One absolutely GLARING problem with it is how the final speeds are calculated...well, that's just it...they aren't. If you hover between 500-600, but then at the last second jump to 30 (or 1200), then that'll be the final result displayed. Without an average, the final numbers on the speed tests are totally useless. Very misleading and frustrating.

I too am from nebraska! I noticed that it picks a strange server when I switch to wifi. If I turn my gps on it then finds the correct server. When I speed test on 3g it find the correct ones. I dunno.
That happened to me yesterday, had me in Cork ireland. I updated profile in settings, and that seemed to fix it.

yeah, I dunno...I noticed it with CM, and with the 3.70 update. Seems to be an issue with 3.70...I see it alot at my job ( WINK, WINK) with evo's thinking they are somewhere in Eurpoe... I just don't know why it defaults there. My Hero never did that... <_< >_> . Ha.
You have issues with speedtest, i had location issues with weather widget after sprint update. I was in Schaumburg IL and my location was listed as some place in Ukraine (yes, one by Russia). I fix location manualy and with next sync went back... Rooting phone and installing calkulin rom fixed my problem

Visiting Motorola ? Would have thought they would have discount droids . lol
Big place, lots of engineers.
That's what you get for living in Nebraska.

Battle of the roms!

Which rom is the best?
I like cyanogen, but very much so love my Htc Radio(limited data plan so.....), which one do you use and why?...
(currently cm7)
Also, on cm7 sometimes my bars are green, sometimes white, what does that mean? (any where I can get more specific info on gingerbread?)

they are white when the connection is not ready yet.

There is no one ROM that fits everyone.
There are advantages (and disadvantages) to each.
My opinions, below...
CM7
Advantages:
Latest Android version (2.3.3)
Closer to a generic Android build
Customizable overclocking built in
Very configurable - many options
Built-in features like power bar, line-item clear for alerts, etc.)
Perceived to be faster than 2.2
Better built-in app information and system information support (But I think this is more OS than a specific ROM).
Disadvantages:
No Sense UI - so you won't have an "HTC" experience"
No FM Radio
No Sense Widgets (e.g., FriendStream, Agenda)
Wonky WiFi (sometimes won't reconnect, can't see hidden networks, etc.)
Liberated FR008
Advantages:
Sense experience
FM Radio
HTC Sense Widgets without need for 3rd party apps
Pretty solid WiFi
Can be overclocked (but with 3rd party app)
Disadvantages:
WiFi sometimes wonky, but not nearly as bad as CM7
Not the latest Android release (only 2.2)
Not nearly as customizable as CM7
In the end, for me the choice has come down to whether or not I like Sense, which I do. I also like the FM radio and sorta solid WiFi. I find Sense and FR008 speedy enough for my uses.
For others, maybe not...
Again, just my two cents...

I believe the color coding on the signal strength meter / wifi strength meter indicates connection (color based on theme) to google servers or lack of said connection (white).
I am using CM7 (currently nightly 11) due to the increased customization options. I tend to like to tinker with stuff, and this gives me the most options. I'm not particularly a fan of HTC sense, so I don't really miss it. Last time I swapped back to a sense rom, I ended up putting an aftermarket launcher on it to get the homescreen customizations I wanted, so I didn't have the one or 2 sense widgets I liked anyway. After that, I decided CM was the way to go, and have been on 7 since the early nightlies, with the exception of a couple weeks ago for a few days. Also, CM7 has a handy feature called phone goggles, which, had I had the foresight to use it last weekend, might have saved me from having to explain a couple of embarassing texts, sent during a state of significant inebriation, to my wife
Some differences in addition to the ones that DanGeorges listed:
CM7 (as well as CM6):
-Contacts display more information that are stored in Google account contacts (i.e. CM's contacts app display the "Phonetic name" field and customized email field names that you have for your Gmail contacts, whereas HTC Sense's contacts app only displays some basic fields)
HTC Sense (Liberated FR008 or any other Sense roms):
-Has a proprietary "Flash Lite" that lets you play flash video from browsers and the Facebook app directly; while you can also play flash video on CM roms, you have to use the Skyfire browser and can be a hassle sometimes.
CM and Sense email clients are quite different - - - one of the items that keeps pulling me back to Sense.
I thought FR008 was great, but for me it had the same serious fault as all the other previous Android ROMs, no voice dialing over bluetooth.
Since I ride a motorcycle as my primary transportation both for business & pleasure, a bluetooth helmet with voice dial is a must have. That makes CM7 an easy winner for me.

Yes -
CM7's has the advantage of a unified inbox. But no pinch-to-zoom
Sense has pinch to zoom.
My solution:
install the CM7 email client into Sense and I have both running.

Gene Poole's "liberated 2.2.2" has the voice dialling in a sense/froyo rom.

Are you sure it's Voice Dialing over Bluetooth? Froyo had voice dialing, but not over bluetooth.
CyanogenMod 7 hands down.

Definitely, used it a bunch yesterday while I was bottle feeding my son (both hands occupied, phone on table, could only get a finger free to hit button on bluetooth headset)
Worked better than anticipated!

Look for a new truly "liberated" version later tonight or tomorrow. It'll have bloatware removed, apn.xml for wifi/usb tethering (without AT$T's surcharge), native sideloading, OC kernel and more. One thing I'm trying my damnedest at right now is disabling that horrible AT$T drop-down over the taskbar.
What exactly is phone goggles?

Similar to google's email goggles, when enabled it requires you to do simple tasks (math problems, etc.) Before allowing you to call/text.

Sounds cool!
What are the advantages to this version over Liberated FR008?
And what does the at&t overlay look like? I'm curious...
Thanks for doing this Gene.

if you are intoxicated, it has a reasonable chance of stopping you from calling/texting someone you shouldn't (like an ex) by:
1) making it difficult for a drunk person to actually accomplish the task and
2) hopefully making you think twice about what you are doing

Cyanogenmod...because its the rom of the gods.
(And as far as the radio, give it time. I've been running cm since Aug of last year and at this point I have completely forgotten about the fm radio until it gets brought up on here. I loved it for the two weeks I had it, but I quickly got over it by just getting a bigger sd card and putting a few gigs of music on my phone)

[Q] Epic Wallpaper Change

I got my original Samsung Epic 4G from Best Buy about a week ago when they were offering it for free. It had all up to date software and apps, it even had newer/different wallpaper than my friends epic which he had had a while. Unfortunately, it bricked on me and I had to get it replaced today from the Sprint store. The one I got today doesn't have the same wallpaper and updated apps, even the android market is way different and doesn't have the "my apps" section, so I can't re-download all the free apps I had from the android market. And I don't know how to update the market either, there's no link or button for it. I also don't know if there's a way to get those updated wallpapers...there was one in particular, with a waterfall/stream that was absolutely perfect and I loved dearly. I've searched this entire website and googled for an hour and I haven't found it yet. Is there any way to get those stock wallpapers from the updated Epic 4G that I used to have? Is there going to be any other apps/functions I'm going to miss/lose because this is obviously an older phone, even though it's still version 2.2.1 and Froyo.EC05???
Thanks.
~Z
I'm pretty sure the market updates itself on stock, and sorry I can't offer any help with the wallpaper, I've never had those at all

NWS weather app

Does anyone know if there is a weather app that uses, or can be configured to use nws or noaa weather? And not aviation weather app, not what I need. I just need a general weather app like weatherbug or weather channel that will show me the same forecast and current temps as going to weather.gov
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I personally haven't tried it, but I've found myself switching back and forth from NWS to Wunderground for aviation related calls.
Have you tried out their [wunderground's] app?
Am i the only one that came in this thread expecting something totally different.

I've looked for an app from them and haven't found one. Do you have any information or a link for said app?
MyCast uses the nws feeds. I've been using it for months now. Good app.

I was fully expecting a post or request of one of the European topless news show weather clips..
NOAA.gov also has a wap site that loads insanely fast FWIW.. I've had a bookmark set for quick and easy access in a pinch (due to the absence of an app)..
I'll check out mycast though and see how it is. Thanks for that tip.
