To the TS, there's a good sticky in the DHD Android Dev section, the very first thread by Ivo.. u should read that.

this is quite OT, but I was wondering how come DHDs overclocked to 1.5Ghz can achieve 3k+ Quadrant scores but the G2 needs to be OCed to 1.8 or 1.9Ghz to achieve similar scores? The extra RAM of the DHD makes so much difference?
Well its a different processor, not just lower clocked.
I dont know the specs off the top of my head but i would guess it has smaller caches. That does make a difference. I doubt ram comes into it for most of the benchmarks.

thx for that, I had a brutal day at work... and then I had a very, very late "tour" at a correctional facility..... so i did not get to any of this. Hopefully tomorrow.... I absolutely love this phone and case..... my windows 7 phone came today... and wifi compared to wife.... the dhd destroys it.... not to mention... things look normal on the dhd... on the w7p, it looks like crap until you zoom in... I just wanted to try the phone for myself, lol
so for me, it all comes down to 2g vs 3g.... dhd is better has down, for many things and reasons..... but the 2g vs 3g is causing me turmoil... oh well, once I root and see the goodness... maybe it will be a much easier decision

Not going to lie, I had NO idea what I was doing... but I think I just stumbled through it all.....
are the kernels dangerous.... how can I test/check to see if it is worthwhile.... will they drain the battery even more so? thx
Depending what kernel and what clock speed you set, you should be able to underclock to around 700 +/- mhz and not have any noticeable slow downs.
Just make sure you set a lower speed when your screen is off and you battery will last upwards of 24 hours.
thx, I just that 1.51 one for now.... seems to be working well, I put a profile in for screen off.... dropping it to 256-756 or whatever it is! did some light benching, angry birds, no lag or issues so far.... woke up and the phone is still alive, lol
thx
I've been browsing around the site lately on which roms are good, which kernels to use, etc. and still I'm a little confused.
I'm pretty new to Droid phones and this is my first. I've rooted my finances Droid 2 just for custom themes, but for my phone I want a little more. Anyone have any suggestions on Roman and kernels to use?
I like the SenseUI, so I'm not really looking to change that, just wanna get more battery life and have remove some of the bloat ware like Skype.

I would recommend Myn's Warm Two Point Two RLS4, or SkyRaider 3.3.3 (or 3.3.4 if you don't want OTA updates ever again). Quality roms right there. If you're going to use Myn's rom, I wouldn't change the kernel that came with it. Runs good for me. For SkyRaider, I would recommend KingKlicks BFS6 kernel, that also ran good for me. To remove bloatware, you can buy root explorer and delete the .apks you don't want, or buy Titanium Backup and uninstall whatever you want. Not sure if you can do that without buying it though, but I would recommend buying it anyways to support the dev. Theres also a way to delete whatever app you want from adb, but I'm not exactly sure how to do that. I believe its rm system/app/whateveryouwant.apk, after you enter su, but I'm not certain. I'm sure a quick Google search would help straighten that out. I hope I helped ya out

I'm running Ziggys kernel made just for RLS4, nice and smooth like butter. I also tried HTCs .17 kernel, but that was on SkyRaider. I seemed to get better battery with Kings BFS6. I'm considering trying chads kernel cause, well, why not? Lol

Sorry for the double post. Didn't want to re-edit my previous post, as I finally got impatiant with waiting and sucessfully downgraded my SLCD DInc and rooted.
I think I'm going to give Virtous ROM and Kernel a try with SetCPU. I might go wiht Chads Kernel and SkyRaider 3.3.4 eventually, but I figure I'd start out with something more suble with Virtous before going into more modified ROMs and Kernels....at least untill I learn more about it all.
Another question though. What is the benefit of changing the radio, if any? I know that if you flash the wrong one, then you end up with a nice expensive mp3 player that you can't use as a phone, but other than revision numbers, whats the difference with modified radios?

I also have this same question. Is where a read me anywhere about flashing radios? I've done it on my old Droid but this is my first HTC phone which seems a lot more sensitive. Is the radio version under a different name in the about the phone screen? On my old droid it was called "radio" on the incredible i see nothing of radio anywhere.

Ah, sorry, I misread.
I haven't updated my ROM in a while, mainly because I don't have the time to. I was running Baked Snack 1.9, but now I want to upgrade to Gingerbread.
There are tons of ROMS in the development forum, and I'm not sure which one to pick. I'm not really concerned with how a ROM looks, since I'm going to load LauncherPro on there anyway.
So, here are the requirements that I have:
- Running Gingerbread
- 4G, GPS, both cameras supported
- Good battery life
- HDMI mirroring
- No FPS limit
- Preferably can run CIFS Manager
Is there anything else that I should be looking for??
Thanks in advance!

FFS people do some research test a few roms and pick the one you like the best
we don't all have the time for that. i could easily spend hours researching and trying them out, which is all time that my phone is half functional, but there are higher priorities on my plate.

OFFICIALLY CM7 says it supports 4G.
However, my experience with CM7 WiMax has been shoddy at best. If you move from a 4G area to a non-4G area then back, most of the time the 4G breaks and you must reboot your phone to reconnect. Even if you stay in a 4G area, sometimes the 4G simply drops out, and you are stuck with both 4G and 3G icons on the screen, once again having to reboot to restore the 4G. There are some work-arounds, but it's definitely not stable, even in RC3. Don't even get me started on trying to wireless tether via 4G on CM7, even if you are lucky enough to get it to connect, you get about 2-3Mbits down whereas on Sense with Wireless Tether for Root Users you get 5-6 Mbits down.
Very annoying.
Anyway, I've given up on CM until the 4G issues are ironed out. I'm not paying an extra $10 a month for 4G if it's not stable enough to use.
My recommendation is to hop over to a MikFroyo ROM. It's as stable an fast as I've seen with everything working. You can apply themes and mods to get the Gingerbread look you want while you wait with the rest of us for the EVO to get official 2.3 support.
Good luck and hope this helped!

there are tons of reasons to root, as you probably know. i would like to use CIFS manager, tether, and use HDMI mirroring.
i was not aware that the stock rom now has unlocked FPS, but this was why i went to a non-stock rom in the first place. but now that i've gone to non-stock, i find that they are faster and have better battery life than stock.
Very tru they are way better with way more options. Idk wat the cifs is. But as far as tether goes there is pda-net for stock. But imho half the fun of rooting is trying all the roms from all the fabulous devs here on xda. It really doesn't take to long to see if a particular Rom is for u. Especially if u have TB. Then if a Rom isn't for u just nand restore to ur old Rom and in my experience its about 20 mins to try it and restore if its not for you. Plus everyone will have their own opinion about a Rom so in order for u to kno which one is for u u gotta try it

I gotta stick up for the OP here a little bit. He's asking for our help, and that's not a helpful comment to ask him "Why root?"
Not having to pay $30 to tether your EVO to a PC was reason enough for me. Or to overclock. Or to theme it to the max. There are many reasons to root.
This is a community for people who want to make the most of their phones. That is why we root.
Please don't come to XDA and ask "Hurr durr why did you root if you're not gonna blah, blah."
If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all, amirite?

Now I'm not trying to be rude. I see this same q on here all the time and ppl usually give their opinion about the Rom they like. Then proceed to say they need to try them to find the one they like. And op is saying he doesn't have time to do that. It's just odd to me that ppl go and root their phone then ask for others to tell them wat the best Rom is. And that's a subjective term. I agree that paying for tethering and all the other charges are bs but honestly if ur gonna root its cool to ask for ppls opinions about the "best" Rom but if u don't have time to try them y bother. So somebody says so and so Rom is the best then he trys it and hates it so y not just try them urself. Usually the op for the roms will tell u what works and not working

Sorry if I jumped the gun in assuming you were rude. As you can see, I've been lurking the forums for a few months, but today is my first time posting. I can understand if you get tired of "What's the best ROM?" threads, because you are right, the "best" ROM doesn't exist, only the best ROM for YOU.
Ya no worries. I lurked for a while too. Now I post rarely trying to help when I can but I'm just a guy loving all the devs great work. And if u want a custom Rom u should c which one u like. Nobody can tell u which Rom will b best for you. Unless u can't think/decide was best for you

Maybe becausae on the first page of this particular forum alone are 4, FOUR threads all asking the same question.
Hi,
Well, i finally rooted my phone, after 5 dyas of dealing with the things, diferent ways, etc.
Now, I would like to know from you all guys, what ROMs are good out there. What do you all recomend me to try.
I already have Cyanogen on my little old G ( version 6 ) And it looks pretty cool.
Any suggestion? i want a stable ROM where i can Install the apps without problems, or having any kinda of signal problem, or networks ( g, 3G, HSPA) problems
Thanks for your Suggestions!
Daniel
If you like sense, evil d's virtuous fusion. I use to hate sense roms but I've been rockin it as a d'd for a while now. Battery life was horrible at first but with faux's low voltage kernel and juice defender, I've gotten surprisingly good battery life. Sense 3.0 features are elegant and functional. Way faster and stable than any other sense roms I used.
I use royal ginger for aosp Rom. Phenomenal battery life speed and stability.

The point was people can give opinions, but you won't know what works for you until you try it yourself. He/she can listen to a suggestion just to found out they don't like it and flash another.
^^ That should have been obvious without me having to elaborate.
I switched to meXdroid a couple days ago and love it. It's really fast, battery is good looks great and everything works ( except your upside down in the front facing camera) but I can live with that. You can also download it through Rom Manager

Nope, i have ordinary Nexus S, not 4G model. But I think it should work just fine. Ask in Trinity thread if you have some concerns ...

Aren't there crazy signal losses occurring with this ROM?
Welcome to the Nexus got mine a few weeks ago and rooted and flashed CM7 on the 1st day LOL .. you should go and try Trinity definitely for Speed and it's under-volted also if your looking for rock solid stability go for Bugless pete's Kernel
Never had those problems with NS version and trinity kernel...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Thanks for the advice Im using Bugless Pete's kernel and his deodexed rom of 2.3.7 and have it over clocked to 1.4 with set cpu. Do you have any recommendations for Set Cpu settings? I know I don't to use cpu if I'm running a different rom but for right now Im basically stock.

Isn't that a GSM only version of MIUI? OP said he traded his Evo, so it seems to me that he probably has CDMA service. Just sayin...
So far I am loving this phone running Bugless Pete's deodexed rom and kernel and installed the voodoo app and configured the color scheme and all I can say is wow I thought the display was great before ... this blows it out of the water!!
I have been going back and forth between overclocking to 1.4 and it has been extremely stable and keeping it at stock.
I am so happy I got this phone and I can honestly say I don't miss the EVO.
