so i just noticed this today (i have the leaked ROM installed) that when i am using the web or checking my email if someone calls they go straight to my voice mail -- i haven't had the phone long enough to know if this is how it is supposed to be or not. Is there a way to get to cancel the data connection and show me someone is calling?

no, not really, at least not for those of us who use push email, since it maintains a constant data connection to the exchange server

well i read through that and tried what they mentioned but i couldn't get it to drop the data when a call came in.
btw, i'm on Sprint, and no EVDO where i am at so only 1x.
but as i mention in the thread
"i believe that all issues with cellphone internet blocking or being disabled when one recieve a call is purely an issue
with old and poor quality equipment of the cellphone operator in the area"
many old gsm and aparently american cellphone networks too
suffer from not being able to handle both network and calls at the same time
it's an issue in the operator end not the phones
yeah after three emails with sprint (i think most of their CS people are brain dead) they finally told me that it is how it works, no way around it.
one told me that calls go to voice mail when you don't have enough signal -- totally irrelevent to this issue
one told me it was a technical problem with my phone and said i should bring it to a sprint store to get a tech to look at it
and finally after *****ed at them sayint that people (that i assume) don't work for sprint know more about this (thanks Rudegar for your responces) then they do, they finally just came out and said that, yeah this is how it is and there isn't anyway around it.
it seems that this is a better place to get answers then emailing sprint --- although i should have realized that from the beginning, i won't make that mistake again.
well i guess your question has been answered, but figure id add my 2 cents...
it works like this only in EV-DO areas not on 1x....
my ring through works perfectly fine when a call or text comes in, it discconects allows me to do what i want, then it automatically reconnects back to data..
Is there any chance the Skype mobile apk file could be modified to work on T-Mo network?
Of course this thread might get the easy answers such as:
1) "No"
2) "It cant be done"
3) "It checks verizon's network?"
... but I'd be happier to hear from experts that know how it actually works/could be done.
Verizon skype apk: http://www.sendspace.com/file/rnwab1
No. It cant be done. It checks verizon's network.
Ok, helpful now... There's no need for Skype mobile.
Using it to call normal phone numbers uses minutes. The only free part is using it to call other Skype numbers. And you can already use Fring or Sipdroid from the Market to do this (AND do VoIP calls to normal numbers), so the Skype mobile app for Verizon is pretty much just crap.

Yeah your right it is pretty crappy that Skype put those restrictions on it by sleeping with the enemy (Big Red).
I was just going to see if it could work on T-Mo though because then I could get my family members to use it as well and make good quality voip calls like I could on the iPhone version.
SIPdroid is dear to my heart but the quality on outbound calls is pretty unusable for me, inbound is still good though. I tell all my friends that "if you get a call from me, dont pick up and just call me back."
Fring 3g quality was serviceable before but it was laggy (I would say something and the other person would start talking and then mid sentence would hear what I said and it would mess up the conversation). It probably has had some updates though so I will try it out again.
dunno if this helps but i read somewhere today that vonage is coming to tmobile and att with calls over wifi capability.
3 has got this for a long time now (no Android client yet) but the acctual calling is routed using a gsm center, no VOIP at all. I have installed the apk for t-mobile and it almost does the same thing ( it doesn't work outside tm network)

Just checked the Market. Vonage is there.
It looks like free USA calls, but only over wifi.

[Edit]: I'm reading the app comments and I don't understand, people are saying $5 pay as you go, etc.
So maybe you have to pay $5 a month for "free" wifi calls. I don't get it. Anyone tried it yet?

Thanks for the info you guys! I've made 3 calls over WiFi with Vonage app and the customer service reps say I sound crystal clear
Now for the real challenge boys... Since Vonage can make free domestic calls over wifi. How do we trick the N1, like on jailbroken iPhone's, into thinking its on wifi even if its on 3g?
Edit: The wifi calling is 100% free, dont add any money even if the app asks you for it (just press the back button to get rid of the prompt)

How do you KNOW it was making calls over wifi?
I just signed up and installed it, and no matter what I do, it always calls from my normal phone number, rather than my Google Voice number, which is what I chose during the sign up process.
Also, turning Airplane mode on and then turning Wifi on doesn't let me make any calls. It says disable airplane mode.
Is there a way to KNOW 100% whether the call is being routed over wifi or normal phone?

On my end I can guarantee that its making the calls through WiFi because of the data only plan I am on. T-Mo has two different types of $40/mo data plans:
1) $40/mo with T-mo hotspot access but cannot make ANY calls (except 911)
2) $40/mo without T-mo hotspot access but can make calls for $.10/min
I have the first option and if I try to make a regular call it says "the service you are attempting to use has been restricted or unavailable" and hangs up. Even if I try to make a call through GVoice it says the same thing so I know I cant make any cellular calls. But I can make a call through the Vonage app with WiFi (although I do have to have on Edge/3g with the WiFi your right).
I just checked my T-Mobile account as well and I dont see any minutes used either.
Now if only we can get this thing to think its on WiFi even if only on 3g!

When I set GV to not call intercept, it will just call using my normal phone number. Vonage just sits there doing nothing.
A few times the Vonage dialer has popped up (if I had GV set to make ALL calls), but then Vonage crashed (Force Close).
Bleh, must be an issue with the Desire caller =\
Fring is flawless with skype dumb easy to setup for idiots like myself
I use it w/o a simcard in my g1 and keep my sim in the n1
I tried this vonage doesn't seem to work with the sim card out or in...if any one can post the correct steps to make domestic calls over wifi on the vonage app please(w/o a sim card it the only sure way to know its using wifi only)
Hi, I know there are many Tablet SMS applications, but I want to know is there a way to make calls from your N7?
Preferably using my normal contract phone number, so people know its me.
Im sure I've seen it somewhere on the web on a video I saw, but havent a clue what it was called.
Im from the UK so no US only apps please.
Much appreciated.

No I mean a little bit like TabletTalk, where it connects to your phone for example.
I don't mind whether its VoIP or whatever, I just want to be able to make a call from my Nexus7, that uses my phones number.
IVE SEEN IT on a Video which makes it even more annoying.

Tablet talk will allow you to answer calls as well you just need a bluetooth headset connected to your actual phone, it works in the same sense as the sms you phone is still the one connecting you are just controlling your phone with the N7

Thanks for your reply mate,
On the Video I saw it was using some sort of VoIP and used the N7's mic, no bluetooth mic needed.
I know that the connection goes through the phone which is fine, as how else would it get the number etc, but I don't want to buy a bluetooth headset.
It may have been GrooveIP but I think thats US only any UK alternatives?
THANKS !
EDIT - It was GrooveIP, what is the difference between GrooveIP and tablet talk?
As tablet talk is made by an XDA user and would love to support them rather than a company.
I've used groove IP on my phone and it does work in Canada but the sound can be glitchy. You have to sign in through Google to set it up, haven't tried it on nexus though.

It is possible to call from SIM if you have a N7 with 3G.
Some Internet providers have also an Internet+Voice option that you can enable. With a specific rom or application that can pop dialer I am pretty sure that you can make calls with your Internet/Voice SIM. I didn't activate the option but I did activate an Internet + Messages option and sending / receiving them work like a charm. I'm pretty sure with a Voice subscription you can do that too, but do keep in mind, if you have a SIM slot.

It is US only because of the laws that GrooveIP must follow. It is the same reason Google Voice is so hard to deal with, because Google provides it for free but has to dodge some laws here and there. Google may require payment after 2013 (they have secure 2013 as free, though).
Just thought i'd post an inquiry after having it drive me nuts now. I'll try to describe it but the subject should be descriptive enough!
Basically what happens, you go to dial a number (or dial from contacts) and the phone calls out then hangs up (hangup tone) then quickly dials your intended number. When you look at the call log you see 2 calls, one being 0min 0sec then the next one right after with the amount of time you spent on said call.
I saw this in another thread and decided to make a thread about the topic instead of clouding up that one:

I have directdial feature on my SIM which allows me to dial international numbers directly. My AT&T MVNO includes international calls - H2O Wireless but you normally needs a access number, their new SIMs got direct dialling now and I think that's what's causing the double dial thing.
When i dial an international number it sends me to the access number then my phone pops up a toast that says "Sending" which then sends the actual number i'm calling. It then connects after some information about the call. I think it does this for all calls on the N4 but then drops the first call to the access number and dials the number straight to the local number instead.
What's weird however is i don't have that issue with my SGS2 and the NEW SIM cards so it's something with the N4.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-4/236548-solavei-google-voice-2.html
Seems to be going on there too with the double dialling issue but obviously with a different provider.
same here
You're absolutely right, I had noticed the same issue but never really thought of checking the call log. After reading your post I checked my call log and every single outgoing call had been logged twice. The first had a zero second duration and the other had the actual call duration.
Solavei
Theres a couple of use having this issue on the Solavei network! i think it might be a bug with 4.2 and mvno's. we tried reporting this to our carrier but they have no idea what can be causing this! I have replaced sim card, phone, and deleted the google voice app and none have solve this issue! i think we have to contact google and let them know about this issue.
I've had a similar issue. I'll type in the number hit send, then after i put the phone to my ear I hear it dial the number and I get nothing until I end the call. In the call log, it shows 0min 0sec but it's not duplicated. Strange thing is that it only happens when I dial a toll free 877 number. It's never happened on local or long distance call or on 866 numbers. Haven't tried an 800 number yet.
about the double dial... i noticed a different issue few days ago...
i dont get a double dial for call log... but what happens is
after i finish a call... the phone automatically dials the second last person from the call log...and disconnects the call automatically...
first i got scared of whats happening and but call never went through... it got disconnected after a while
I have the exact same problem as shotta35. I'm in Canada, so on a different network most likely (rogers).
I've tried the factory reset, didn't fix anything. Tried switching to EDGE mode, doesn't do anything. enabled/disabled bluetooth (in case it was some kind of bluetooth dialing thing). Incoming calls don't seem affected in any way.
However, this hasn't happened every time to me. there were 3 or 4 calls where it did work the first time, just after a reboot typically.
Anyways, still looking into it and hoping someone can find the solution because this is annoying!

Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I doubt root would be the cause of this but I guess anything is possible. I had the same carrier with an older SIM (manually cut) when I first got my N4 then upgraded to the microSIM. With the original SIM I didn't have the double dial thing but I rooted around the same time I switched SIMs so I don't remember when it started.
I have this too. If you use Google voice, even as VM only as I do, it double dials on outbound calls. Only seems to happen with solavei if you have voice installed on N4. Doesn't happen with any other phones with solavei AFAIK.
I just don't care I'm so pleased w solavei otherwise. I tried porting my phone # to Google voice previously, and I hated how text messages would not be left alone with the stock app. Then I tried T-Mobile prepaid and I found out it doesn't let you use Google voice as VM. So given that I have Google voice voicemail and SMS working properly finally at least, this bothers me very little.
I found that if you return a call directly from Google voice voicemail it only dials once..

double dialing fixed
I had the same issue, and I finally figured it out. I`m on Rogers Canada, so I switched my sim with my wife`s (on Rogers as well) and my Nexus 4 had to restart. When booted up the problem was gone. Next day I went to a Rogers store and bought a new sim, activated it and I`ve been using it for 24 hrs now and the problem is completely gone.
Another issue that got fixed was using the 2 second pause or hard wait while dialing. I guess when the phone was double dialing it dropped the pause/wait in the second dial. but now it works perfectly.
By the way new sim is LTE enabled, and I have LTE enabled on the phone as well and it's working fine.

Weather or not the SIM allows both phone and data, depends on the SIM and NOT the tablet. You can purchase data only SIMs, Phone only or Phone and data.

I have a data/sms/phone sim. Can't make phone calls on the tablet, but I can use the sim on my other tablet and make phone calls and messages no problem
That sounds peculiar. I have the SM-T725, and it came with a data-only SIM. I put a normal SIM in it, and now use the tablet for calls through that SIM, no other devices involved.
The 727u must mean US version and therefore not allowed to us the tablet to make calls and texts on it's on. Tablets in the US are only allowed data. I am wondering if flashing a new rom or something with stock os to make it data+sms.
It is strange that US LTE tablets don't have the ability to make calls or receive SMS. When LTE tablets released in the rest of the world have the ability to make calls and receive SMS :/

It's a carrier restriction. There are no government regulations here that restricts tablets from making phone calls directly.
I have the 727V (Verizon) and the only way I can make phone calls using apps like Google Voice or the Verizon Messages+ app. The latter uses my phone's number.

On my Verizon tablet it has its own number which must be connected to my phone number.
I can call out on the tablet and receive calls without the phone. I can also receive and send text messages also without the phone.
I also have data on the tablet.

How do you make calls? I have the Verizon 727V and although it has its own phone number, I cannot make or receive calls from it, unless I am using the Verizon Messages+ app, that is tied to my Note 10+ number, or using Google Voice or some other IP phone app. I also have data on the tablet.
Please share how you are making calls directly from your tablet.

That is exactly how I make and receive calls on my tablet. I can leave my phone at home and still be able to make and receive calls.

So you're not using the tablet's phone number, but using the number associated with a phone.
The point of this thread is making calls with an LTE enabled tablet using the number linked to the tablet's data plan and not to another line.

That is the way that it appears that Verizon set it up. I never asked them about the tablet phone number. It carries the same area code as my phone but is a totally different number.
