I have the smt727u version and it doesn't work. Can only make phone calls and messages if you have the tablet connected to a phone. They have a sim card for data only so you can connect anywhere. Pretty useless and stupid imo. I'm looking if there is a rom that supports native calling and texting from the tablet without another device

Weather or not the SIM allows both phone and data, depends on the SIM and NOT the tablet. You can purchase data only SIMs, Phone only or Phone and data.

I have a data/sms/phone sim. Can't make phone calls on the tablet, but I can use the sim on my other tablet and make phone calls and messages no problem
That sounds peculiar. I have the SM-T725, and it came with a data-only SIM. I put a normal SIM in it, and now use the tablet for calls through that SIM, no other devices involved.
The 727u must mean US version and therefore not allowed to us the tablet to make calls and texts on it's on. Tablets in the US are only allowed data. I am wondering if flashing a new rom or something with stock os to make it data+sms.
It is strange that US LTE tablets don't have the ability to make calls or receive SMS. When LTE tablets released in the rest of the world have the ability to make calls and receive SMS :/

It's a carrier restriction. There are no government regulations here that restricts tablets from making phone calls directly.
I have the 727V (Verizon) and the only way I can make phone calls using apps like Google Voice or the Verizon Messages+ app. The latter uses my phone's number.

On my Verizon tablet it has its own number which must be connected to my phone number.
I can call out on the tablet and receive calls without the phone. I can also receive and send text messages also without the phone.
I also have data on the tablet.

How do you make calls? I have the Verizon 727V and although it has its own phone number, I cannot make or receive calls from it, unless I am using the Verizon Messages+ app, that is tied to my Note 10+ number, or using Google Voice or some other IP phone app. I also have data on the tablet.
Please share how you are making calls directly from your tablet.

That is exactly how I make and receive calls on my tablet. I can leave my phone at home and still be able to make and receive calls.

So you're not using the tablet's phone number, but using the number associated with a phone.
The point of this thread is making calls with an LTE enabled tablet using the number linked to the tablet's data plan and not to another line.

That is the way that it appears that Verizon set it up. I never asked them about the tablet phone number. It carries the same area code as my phone but is a totally different number.

Using it to call normal phone numbers uses minutes. The only free part is using it to call other Skype numbers. And you can already use Fring or Sipdroid from the Market to do this (AND do VoIP calls to normal numbers), so the Skype mobile app for Verizon is pretty much just crap.

Yeah your right it is pretty crappy that Skype put those restrictions on it by sleeping with the enemy (Big Red).
I was just going to see if it could work on T-Mo though because then I could get my family members to use it as well and make good quality voip calls like I could on the iPhone version.
SIPdroid is dear to my heart but the quality on outbound calls is pretty unusable for me, inbound is still good though. I tell all my friends that "if you get a call from me, dont pick up and just call me back."
Fring 3g quality was serviceable before but it was laggy (I would say something and the other person would start talking and then mid sentence would hear what I said and it would mess up the conversation). It probably has had some updates though so I will try it out again.
dunno if this helps but i read somewhere today that vonage is coming to tmobile and att with calls over wifi capability.
3 has got this for a long time now (no Android client yet) but the acctual calling is routed using a gsm center, no VOIP at all. I have installed the apk for t-mobile and it almost does the same thing ( it doesn't work outside tm network)

Thanks for the info you guys! I've made 3 calls over WiFi with Vonage app and the customer service reps say I sound crystal clear
Now for the real challenge boys... Since Vonage can make free domestic calls over wifi. How do we trick the N1, like on jailbroken iPhone's, into thinking its on wifi even if its on 3g?
Edit: The wifi calling is 100% free, dont add any money even if the app asks you for it (just press the back button to get rid of the prompt)

How do you KNOW it was making calls over wifi?
I just signed up and installed it, and no matter what I do, it always calls from my normal phone number, rather than my Google Voice number, which is what I chose during the sign up process.
Also, turning Airplane mode on and then turning Wifi on doesn't let me make any calls. It says disable airplane mode.
Is there a way to KNOW 100% whether the call is being routed over wifi or normal phone?

Just disable the phones radio via the INFO screen(Dial *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information ->)..

On my end I can guarantee that its making the calls through WiFi because of the data only plan I am on. T-Mo has two different types of $40/mo data plans:
1) $40/mo with T-mo hotspot access but cannot make ANY calls (except 911)
2) $40/mo without T-mo hotspot access but can make calls for $.10/min
I have the first option and if I try to make a regular call it says "the service you are attempting to use has been restricted or unavailable" and hangs up. Even if I try to make a call through GVoice it says the same thing so I know I cant make any cellular calls. But I can make a call through the Vonage app with WiFi (although I do have to have on Edge/3g with the WiFi your right).
I just checked my T-Mobile account as well and I dont see any minutes used either.
Now if only we can get this thing to think its on WiFi even if only on 3g!

I set Google Voice to "Do not use Google Voice to make any calls" to make sure it was only Vonage making the calls.
I'm tellin you guys this app works great on the free WiFi calls Just gotta hack the N1 for tricking it into thinking its on WiFi even while on 3g.
Lemme know if you guys have any trouble setting up the Vonage account to test...

When I set GV to not call intercept, it will just call using my normal phone number. Vonage just sits there doing nothing.
A few times the Vonage dialer has popped up (if I had GV set to make ALL calls), but then Vonage crashed (Force Close).

You need a sim with a voice plan on it.
i have one the wierd thing was though my tablet simcard had voice on it and able to make calls but now they disable it lol. i guess they realized the glitch lol. but i have my voice unlimited data simcard i can use in my tablet. its just that it was kinda kool that all three simcards had voice even though two were only for tablets lol.
Is there any way to do this? I get no service at work, but do have access to wifi. Can I somehow connect to wifi and be able to receive/make calls using that signal? Thanks
Yes there is. Its called GrooveIP and its currently 50% off ($1.99) on Amazon. It works well I have used it on my Captivate several times with NO SIM CARD! You need to have Google Voice set up and have a Google Voice #, but both GV and a GV# are worth having w/o GrooveIP.
Recently there was a bug where the Atrix would only do calls in speakerphone, but I just checked and that issue is now resolved! I had spoke to the dev about it and he informed me that their team does have an Atrix. He informed me that they would be working to resolve the issue and apparently it has been.
Thanks for the info...is there any way to do this while keeping your phone number? I don't care about outgoing calls...its the incoming calls that are important for me.

the simple answer, no. T-Mobile is the only US carrier to implement UMA. UMA will allow you to make calls over a wifi network.

Well yes, but it is a bit of a pain. You can port your current # to GV, this may mean paying your ETF. Of course if you can get customer service or a store manager to understand you dont want to cancel your contact but only change your #, you may not have a problem. But good luck, I have not attempted yet.
Or you could do what I do.. Set your GV# to forward to your current mobile # (and your house #, work #, etc). Give your GV# to your friends. With this set up I can always be reached via one # regardless of if I am on the Atrix or the Cap w/no sim, and regardless of if its voip over wifi or through Atts ****ty coverage.
Then again, when the Atrix gets Gingerbread there is a native Android internet calling feature built in that requires some knowledge of SIP. So I guess thats an option too.

Your short answer is not helpful uninformed. of course we know Att does not provide a voip solution, that does not mean they do not exist on the Atrix.
Couldn't you set your call forwarding to your GV # on your phone when unreachable?
if your in good with the IT folks...might consider a 3g microcell. We just put one here for that purpose....granted it doesn't work with our firewall though.
Or, you could go to the extreme, sort of, make your coworkers happy, too, and buy a GSM repeater. Should cost around 100$
Use groove ip and forward numbers to it from google voice when at work.

Service in my area has been great... up until the last year or so. Basically since they put 4G here. I no longer have service in my office, or several other places that I frequent. I travel alot and most always have verizon service where I go.
So here is the dilema... I don't want to lose my phone number! I was thinking about porting my number to another service, cause I do not want to lose my number... I have had it forever. But at the same time I do not want to lose my verizon line until I know that the other service is ok for me. primarily the unlimited data.
Anyone have any ideas?

This is a issue a growing number people are encountering now a days. I would suggest that you take look into T-Mobile network Test Drive offer an see if they are for you.I know that in my area T-Mobile is terrible so I'm with Verizon till I get kicked off Unlimited then it looks like it's Sprint time. The porting of the number won't be too much of a issue as most company's do that now. I don't know what happened when they flipped the 4G switch but their towers weren't ready.

Go get a new number from some other carrier then forward your Verizon number to it till you get it figured out then port or not

This one's easy. Port your phone number to Google Voice. Then get a new number from Verizon for your existing phone. Install the Google Voice app on your phone and all of the incoming and outgoing calls will be via Google Voice using the number your ported there.
I've had Google Voice as my primary number for years and I'm completely independent of any carrier or single phone. In fact, when someone calls my phone number it rings on my cell phone, my home phone, my office phone, my tablet and my PC. My wife giggles every time I get a call because it sounds like I'm in a clock store with all the alarms going off at once.
If you get a new phone from another carrier just install Google Voice on it and both your old cell phone and new phone will ring at once. You will be completely independent of a carrier. I am so independent of the carrier that I have no idea what phone number is on my current cell phone. I'd have to look in the settings to see what it is.
Two caveats:
1) You will need to use Google Voice for text messaging. If you use any other text messaging app it will show that the message came from the cell phone's number and not Google Voice's number.
2) Google Voice messaging doesn't handle MMS texts. You can't send/receive photos or videos.
One huge advantage:
You can send/receive texts on your PC by going to Voice.Google.com and logging in. In fact, your entire text messaging history is stored in the cloud. Get a text and it shows up on your phone, on your tablet and in your browser. Immediately. When I'm on my computer and I hear my phone chime that a text has arrived, I never take my phone out, I just look at the text in my browser. It's so much more convenient than any other messaging app that I would never change.
Yeah... I already use google voice quite a bit with a different number.
Here is the problem, if I port my number out of Verizon, their system automatically closes the line when the port is complete. It is no problem getting it turned back on, but then I lose the unlimited data.
That is where my problem lies.

Hey guys;
I'm here for a general question that I can't seem to find a solution phone. A little background:
I have two phones. One phone for work, one phone for personal. Personal is Galaxy S5 and work is Galaxy S4 Active.
I have two bluetooth devices a Martian Smart Watch, and an LG stereo headset.
The headset connects with two phones, but instead of both being default, there's a default and a backup, so if I charge, go out of range, turn off, anything, it becomes a pain in the ass to try to reconnect both. The watch is a smart watch, only connects to one device. So I'm looking into options to make two devices into one.
I've come across a few options. However, I've come to find issues with each.
Use a dual sim adapter-however I haven't come across an Active Dual Sim adapter. So I can not receive calls from both at any time, just the one that's active.
Buy a different model dual sim phone, but I haven't found a good reliable place to do this.
Try a "mirroring" method? I haven't found an actual solution for this, but it's a hypothis that something like this has to exist. Maybe an app on both phones, leave my work phone at home on the charger 24/7, and carry my personal. Any calls coming in from my work get sent through the app on my personal, and can make calls through the app on my personal that will show up from my work number.
Call forwarding on one device-but then there's no way to dial out or text from that devices phone number.
I've heard some rumors about google voice and porting a number over to it. Then using the google voice app to text or call. Anyone got information regarding this?
I dunno, I'm at a loss. Anyone found any good solutions for this?

You want a phone that has two SIMs simultaneously active. So do a lot of a lot of other people. But the phone manufacturer's must not perceive a large market for the demand as I haven't seen anyone bring a commercial product like that to market. There are dual SIM phones, but either one SIM is inactive i.e. you choose to boot into one SIM or the other. Or one SIM is GSM and one is CDMA, apparently for mixed-technology markets in China.
It isn't impossible. I know of a very small number of people running custom firmware that multiplexes access to the SIM, effectively checking if there are calls for each SIM in rapid succession. In effect that monitors incoming calls for both SIMs. But again, I haven't noticed any commercial models that do that. You should do a search and see if you can find a manufacturer with a true dual SIM phone.
In practical terms though, you could simply have your second number forward to your single SIM phone. The only obvious impediment to that is if your carrier plan has excessive call forwarding charges. Google voice is often helpful in this to avoid miscellaneous forwarding or airtime fees or for greater call management flexibility. You may not need a second cellular number at all if you can use a GV number for line two and then forward incoming GV calls to your mobile.
