so I was an unfortunate user who had dust under their screen and it was only getting worse. Rooted and unlocked I decided to go the swap route plus I didnt want to be N1less for a while. Any who, I call up HTC and explain my situation and without a prob I take the swap option. So 3 days later or so I recieve my refurbished N1. Everything looked well. I immediately rooted it with Cyan6 back to my old ways. So I go to play Home Run Derby and the screen goes white for a few seconds and I notice the entire screen has a burnt image on it. You can see the notification bar, the 3G symbol and entire keyboard in portrait mode. I start to notice it more browsing web and what not.
My plan is to call HTC on monday and get another phone as I hope it will not be a problem. I am also glad the new rooting methods are much easier then they were and I can just go back to stock. Lets hope they dont give me a prob with my old one...lol I will report back monday
I had the same dust under screen problem with my original Nexus One and called HTC to do a swap about 3 weeks ago. I received refurbished N1 two weeks after I first called and even before I had sent back the original I turned on the swap one they sent me, put my information in, and it rebooted.
Turns out they sent me a refurbished unit that constantly rebooted so much I couldn't even use it
I called again immediately and HTC said that I would need to send the original phone back (w/ the dust problem) and then a week later they will close out the ticket and then I can call again after that to do another swap on the one they sent me that is constantly rebooting :Sigh:
So I call again a week later once they close out the ticket and get a 3rd Nexus sent out to me. Well once I get the 3rd one I turn it on and lo and behold I can't make any calls unless the phone is on speaker mode!!!
I have a baaaaaaaaaad feeling that I'm just going to continually get sent refurbished units that don't work over and over and I'm not quite sure what to do about it
My experience with a swap hasn't been much better.
I sent my n1 for the power button issue and the swap unit I received was in terrible shape.
* screen burn in
* dust under the screen
* dead pixel
* very loose usb port
Needless to say I called and asked for another device.
All I can say is that their incompetence has led me to have 2 n1s now. Sometimes incompetence leads to good things.
Damn this sounds bad. I hope I don't have these issues. I called and they said I have to wait for the ticket to close. Guess ill report back next week

I doubt you will have any problems with the old one. I sent my unlocked rooted phone back for a power button issue. Did a swap, received a refurbished phone and although it appeared to be fine, I tried recording a video and low and behold all I got was static for sound. I called HTC, explained the problem and within a day or so had another phone which has been fine. The unlocked/rooted phone was not a problem and showed service complete on the website.
If you are returning your phone for valid hardware issues, I doubt very much that HTC is going to give you a problem although I guess YMMV. As long as the HTC Website shows as "service complete", you are good to go on the unlocked/rooted device. I would suggest putting the phone back to factory software and unrooted. That's what I did beforehand. You're right about the newer rooting methods, it is a bit of a challenge to root, but well worth the extra time while alleviating the stress of "What If?" when you need warranty service.
Good Luck!
so my last one cleared and they are sending me a new one as we speak. Ill report back mid next week.
and yes it cleared with an unlocked bootloader running Cyan6 morphed up

The ENTIRE keyboard? Man, you must have gotten a phone from a 12 year old girl if they were using the keyboard that much.
Did 3 swaps earlier this year:
- original phone: bad microphone or something
- 1st replacement: really pink screen
- 2nd replacement: horrible reception
- 3rd replacement slightly pink screen (this is the one I kept)
It is possible to keep the original phone and send in the replacement.
Its been over 2 weeks since I sent back the swap device for another and they still haven't sent out another replacement.
Multiple calls to htc support hasn't gotten me anywhere. They've repeatedly said that they would escalate the issue but nothing results from that.
So far, very disappointed with htc support.
I'm probably going to pick up the mytouch 4g just for the tmobile support which is excellent...

I got two car docks like this.
Hey guys, I bought the DX on the day it was released. about 4 months later I started noticing considerable dust under the screen, so I called it in and Verizon was quick to send me another one. Well the first replacement had a broken radio and wouldn't aquire a 3g signal, Verizon sent me another. That one had a broken shutter, a lot of the pictures taken with it would over expose. I stayed with that one for a couple of monthe til it got so bad that all pictures taken in the daylight would overexpose. so last week i got another sent too me. That replacement phone had a broken gps, it wouldn't aquire a signal strong enough to lock on, so verizon sent me another. This one will not recognize any videos on my sd card, it will not take any videos either, it also will not save any pictures, it will take them, then say that its saving the picture, but somehow it doesnt.
I am on phone number 5 and there is another coming tomorrow (cain't wait to see wht's wrong with this one)... Has onyone else had the same experiences with the certified phones? The company that's tasked to fix these is obviously not doing there job...
You got really unlucky back when I had my droid eris it froze up doing the ota to 2.1 and they gave me a preowned phone that worked just fine
Sent from my DROIDX
My first pre-owned had mad reboot issues and none of the troubleshooting methods worked. Got a replacement pre-owned and all is well. Good luck with your next one!
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Verizon is notorious for this - supposedly these certified pre owned phones pass a "100 point inspection", yet somehow most of the phones have obvious problems such as the ones you outlined above. You might have some luck going into the store, explaining your situation, and demanding a brand new one instead of a used one.
a LOT of the "recertified" phones don't actually have anything wrong with them at all. Customers return them before their 30 days is up, or they get sent in for things like a broken battery or broken SD card. So sometimes these "recertified" phones are actually brand new in box, that just never came with an SDcard (or something along those lines).
I think you just got REALLY REALLY unlucky.
Maybe go to a verizon store and give it the "wardo5757 100 point inspection" before you take it home.
What a great thread to read right after I have a replacement shipped (will be here tomorrow). Stupid mini usb port is super loose and won't take a charge.
Who am I kidding though, Verizon replaced 3 of my TP2 device to the point I got a letter saying Assurion would no longer cover me. I have bad luck with phones but have never had a problem with a replacement outside of once or twice. Better luck next time!
Hello everyone,
I need some advice or suggestions on what to do. The Mytouch 4g, as you all may know, has a lot of problems. I've done many exchanges now, and some of them were done back to back. The first few times, TMO was able to ship express for free, but now they are charging me $9.99 for regular ground shipping even though the phones that I receive are defective. I am very frustrated at this point and have been thinking about canceling all 4 of my lines with them and eating the $800 ETF. What do you guys think I should do?
You may be wondering why I have to exchange it so many times..
Unlike the fellow perfectionists that you guys are, I never exchanged a phone that had a bad screen or squeaking buttons. The first time I exchanged it was because it had two dead pixels, then the power button would no longer work, then there was a ton of dust under the screen to the point where I had trouble seeing the top left corner where my status/notification bar is, then I had wifi and reception problems, then I've had the phone either shut off or reboot on its own.
I've been running into many, many problems - and they are not always the same problem either. After the third phone, all they have been doing is sending out refurbished units that are 'pre-damaged' by the previous user. On top of that, I have to pay for shipping on each phone, plus the Zagg's invisible shield (it's about $23 with labor on installation) that I had on several of the replacement phones. After troubleshooting for hours on end with tech support, I noticed that my battery cover is loose since they had me reboot/remove battery so many times, I ended up buying the gel skin case from TMO yesterday so that the battery cover wouldn't fall off.
I would be glad to take any advice that you guys have at this point. Thank you.
Edit: By the way, I did not have any apps other than opera mini - didn't even update youtube and things like that.
The statistical likelihood of getting 9 defective devices in a row is astronomical. Truly. If you are being honest and these are all really manufacturing defects then you sir are the unluckiest ****er ever and you are never welcome to babysit my kids. I don't really have any advice except to say that if your next problem is software related, try rooting and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I would avoid crosswalks and commercial flight if at all possible. Damn dude. Unlucky...

They can offer to give you a different phone all together. Like the g2 or galaxy 4g. Just ask
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Do this. Call tmobile and tell them the issue with your device. Have them do another warranty exchage, but, instead of getting it shipped, tell them that you really do not want to wait once more to receive another device shipped and that if you can go into a tmo store and pick up a warranty replacement. They shouldn't have a problem telling you yes. Have them call the store so they can tell them you will be going in to get a warranty replacement. This way for sure you wont get a refurbished device. You will be getting a brand new one out of the box. This is the way I did my warranty exchage. They even gave me an extra battery for free.

I agree with coupetastic-droid and also after your 5th replacement you should get a different phone if u want for ur replacement. Try for a g2 or even a g2x!

TJ you crack me up. I actually went through this guys episode with a mytouch slide, 5 phones under warranty, but they never charged me a dime for shipping. The one and only issue i had with the Mytouch slide was dust under the screen. I can't remember if it was the 3rd or the 4th replacement i got in the mail, but that one came with dust in all four corners. Didn't even insert a SIM card in that phone just took it down to my local Tmobile store and the manager exchanged it for me. After the 5th replacement with dust i decided to sell it and replace it with a MT4G. Well it was all good for a week until my power button failed to work, 1st exchange. They made me pay the 9.99 shipping for that one. Receive the new phone and i notice the display sucks compared to my wife's MT4G. Instead of calling in to tmobile i drive down to the local Tmobile store and i show the manager my predicament ( mind you this is the same guy that was exchanging my Mytouch Slide). Nice guy orders me another MT4G, waived the shipping. 3rd phone arrives a few days later, display is washed out, but i decide to live with it. Figuring that if i exchange it again I'll get another one with the crappy display. F**K me if the power button doesn't work after two weeks. I go back to the Tmobile store and have another chat with the manager, orders me another MT4G and waives the shipping. Manager tells me, "You're the unluckiest man i've seen with a phone", and i said "yes, yes, I am." Last exchange was the charm, good screen, and the power button actually works. I honestly thought i was the only poor bastard that could be this unlucky with phones. I have to show my wife this post, so she doesn't think i'm the unluckiest man alive. You sir have just made my day. If you can i'd go to a local tmobile store and see what they can do for you. Best of luck.

First of all, nice 'Lude. I just picked up an 07 Civic Si Sedan on Saturday and I ****ing LOVE it!
2nd, are you running stock Sense or rooted? To be perfectly honest I've found the stock Sense to be much more buggy than the cm7 I've been running for the past 3 or 4 months.
My first phone had random reboots and such and a factory reset seemed to solve the issue, but I'm assuming they had you do that multiple times.
Even if the phone is fresh out of the box, do a factory reset before you use it. It might help, it did for me.
Otherwise check out cm7 or one of the Sense roms around here. Removing all the bloatware actually does wonders for stability. If you really want I can upload a nandroid of my own stock rom with the bloatware removed.
On my 3rd mt4g and I'm about ready to go back to iPhone most androids have to many hardware issues.

First of all, yeah.. my Lude is old news. Since then, I've switched to an S2k, but that got stolen. Now I'm in an 06 Evo.
Anyway, back on topic..
The phone is completely stock. This is the FIRST PHONE I've ever owned that I have kept stock - Why? Because I don't want to have to unroot it when I send it in for warranty repairs.

Unrooting is as simple as flashing pd15img.zip through hboot. Not that hard.
Definitely try a different rom. As I said I've found cm7 to be much more stable than stock.

i got pretty bad luck with my phone. finally got a good one after like 9 exchanges and a month later the power button went out. i called them and they told me i couldnt exchange anymore cause i "had too many problems with the phone." so the rep told me that the only thing they could do left is to exchange my phone for a motorola charm.....i was like wtf why the heck would i want to downgrade my phone, which polly cost more then that piece of **** charm and it doesnt even run android...major downgrade.
Dude. That blows. Hard. I'm sorry to see that you're having so many problems with your phone and I'm glad I don't have the same luck as you. I got mine from eBay and it came in perfect condition. Never had dust under the screen, good screen, no faulty hardware, etc.
But in all seriousness, after 5 phones, I wouldn't keep it. I personally think that it's a great phone, but if I had to take it back 9 times, I'd try something else out. Ask if you can switch. It shouldn't cost you anything as long as the retail price is equivalent or lower than the MyTouch 4g, and if I'm not mistaken, it's one of the higher priced ones (rightfully, so). If you don't hate a keyboard, the G2 might be good for you, but I hear the hinge has problems and knowing your luck, the hinge would break apart upon first use. So maybe the Galaxy S 4g? I know Samsung has great hardware, even if their software is crap, as is their update schedules, but that is easily fixed with custom ROMs.
Either that, or wait and return it completely, if you're still within your return time and keep your upgrade for when the better phones come out, i.e HTC Sensation, etc, and just use something affordable off of eBay or Craigslist. Meh
Just my two cents. Sorry if it didn't help much, but I hope your luck gets better. :/
Update:
My luck has gotten worse. I received another replacement phone on April 15th. A week later, April 22nd, I noticed a dead pixel on my screen.
*Sigh* I have no idea what to do now.
You need to move on to a different device. I've never heard of anyone have so many problems with a device.

I called in and spoke to technical support. They asked me to bring the phone to a store so that they can fill out a request for warranty exchange form. However, their tone basically implied something like, "It's impossible that you are getting so many broken phones. We need to verify that your phone is really defective before we do another exchange."
I brought it to a store and the retail sales manager had no idea why technical support sent me there, and basically told me to go call customer service again. He did, however, notate that there were a few dead pixels on the screen and that there was no physical, nor was there water damage.
I then called retentions and the supervisor picks up (without any transferring either). I explained to her exactly what happened, and how technical support had sent me into the store. She told me that she has no idea why because they could have filled out the form for warranty exchange over the phone, just like the other exchanges that I have done so far.
She apologized for what happened and said that I qualify for a multiple exchange (sorry if I got the term wrong!). She said that the manufacturer would exchange my Mytouch 4g for a Motorola Charm..
I explained that it would be a MAJOR downgrade. She then submits the form for the exchange and told me that it would be shipped express free of charge.
So you getting another mt4g or the charm? I'm still teipping about them offering you a charm over a mt4g. They are nuts!

Another MyTouch4g.. Hopefully the 10th one's the charm!
My touch screen died on my HD2, it was one of the older versions bought in Jan last year. I sent it off to HTC in April and they've had it over a month now. They say the parts are in Taiwan but have no idea when they'll ship. I simply can't beleive such a big company can happily take my phone off me for over a month and still not be able to tell me when they'll repair it. And to top it off, they sent my proof of purchase, which had my name/address etc on it, to a totally different customer; the numpty repair shop had clearly shoved my paperwork in to some elses repaired HTC phone.
Anyone else have the same issues with them at the moment? Anyone managed to get a replacement handset out of them yet???
This is a high bureaucracy if you want something repaired under warranty...

Funnily enough they sent me an email today to say the phone should be with me on the 25th and the delay was due to moving the repair centre. That's the first time they mentioned that, up till today, it was always "we're waiting on parts, not sure what's happening". If only people could be honest. At least they've offered a free accesory up to 50 quid as a way of saying sorry so that's not too bad. Still, this whole debacle makes me think my next phone won't be a Sensation but a Galaxy S2. I hope Samsung do better repairs!

Got the same call today - repaired phone will be back with me next week & I chose the Bluetooth Headset for £50 as a freebie from HTC (as an apology for the delay in returning the phone to me).
The experience has not made me want to jump from the HTC brand (been with them since the old days of the SPV) - therefore I will still be grabbing a Sensation when my contract expires in the next few months.
Mine got picked up 6 weeks ago today and I got the same email yesterday. It was a Desire that I sent off.
try to ask them send u a new phone ^^

Ive tried many times lol.
Have any of you got UPS tracking numbers for your devices to be shipped back?
My HD2 finally arrived back today with a nice new working touch screen (just as HTC said it would).
Although the HTC website says that it is awaiting pick-up by the courier service
Now I have to find another screen protector & try my best to apply it minus dust bubbles & turned up corners.
Well, well.... Got my phone back today after 6 weeks and 5 days unrepaired, exactly with the same fault as when I sent it and with my battery missing to top it off.
HTC have now told me that I will be receiving a brand new Desire S for compensation, its supposed to arrive today or tomorrow.
Anyone else been offered a brand new phone for compensation?
Lets say that my experience in the Benelux area is not much better.
The first time my HD2 got into repair, 1.5 months ago. 3 appointments to pick it up and not showing up with the most lame excuses.
Device was fixed after that in 1 week time which is good to me but the delivery back was another thing .... again.
The guy on the phone also asked me why I was angry after 3 missed appointments. Well if I do that in my current role I will not make it untill the end of the week.
Now after a month my phone has a MB problem and I already feared the support thing when it started happening. Needless to say I was right again!
Called in on Monday morning and was asked when it should be picked up. Two choices Tuesday 9am-1pm or 1pm-6pm, so I choose 9am-1pm.
They picked it up at 4:20pm. Not so funny when you think that I have to arrange my working day (and customers) for it.
To top it off. This morning I get an email that the device they received is not a desire hd as mentioned in the case but a hd2. sighhh
-------
Aangemeld Product:
Desire HD - Desire HD
Referentienummer: 11BECxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ontvangen Product:
TOUCH HD 2 - TOUCH HD 2
--------
And I won't go into detail on what happened to my Touch Pro a year ago which went into service a couple of times and wasn't fixed at all.
... and we have a winner ... again.
Got a message last Friday that my HD2 was ready.
Now this morning I asked Dynafix (the company that 'fixes' it in the Benelux)where it was and what was done to fix the issue.
'installed the latest rom' I was speechless.
I already told the HTC guy what was done before it was picked up and ofcourse installing the latest rom is one of them.
About 20 minutes later by coincidence I get customer care on the line asking me if I was satisfied with the repaired phone. (That I still don't have btw)
I mention what I just heard from the repaircenter and that the device will not work like it should.
It will have to come in 1 more time and then they can do a swap if it gets approved.
The device has not been working like it should since March the 27th.
I asked if it could get swapped for another model and I got a straight 'no'.
HTC is seriously getting on my nerves. Spending over 2000 Euros on phones over the past 3 years and not doing something in return for customers is not a good thing.
I was tempted to ask for a Sensation and pay a part of it myself but now I am more than tempted to get the Samsung S2.
Edit: The thing arrived 15 minutes ago ..... pop in battery and 5 minutes later ... stuck

Edit 2: Contacted HTC again to ask them if they can exchange it.
This really .... me of. They concider the last repair not a repair but a software upgrade so they will not exchange it.
Strange since I sent it in for a repair and already mentioned that I did a rom upgrade etc.
Has anyone had any problems with their refurbished EVOs? So far I've had 4 in the last week and a half, and I have to go back again tomorrow for what I'm going to assume will be my 5th. The power button on my EVO broke, they sent me a refurb. That one had a broken charging port when I got it, another refurb. That one did nothing but a constant boot loop, another refurb. This one came to me with a blown earpiece speaker and an overheating problem that causes the phone to reboot.
I'm sick of spending my family dinner time every day at the Sprint store. Can I be the only one who is having these problems? It seems to me that whoever refurbishes these phones for Sprint has absolutely no quality control department whatsoever. Another (what I consider to be huge) problem is that at one point I was waiting 3 days because the refurb EVOs were on back-order. During that time I had to steal the extra phone on my account back from my mom.
I guess I really can't do much about any of this, but I did write a letter in the hopes that someone will give a damn about just how horrible these refurbished phones are when they reach the consumer. I don't have high hopes though.
It reminds me of the time I drove from Sprint store to Sprint store trying to find a replacement Treo years ago. I hit 5 different stores before I finally got one that wasn't a damaged refurb.
That's the end of my rant. If you're bored enough to have read this far... well, that sucks.
I had my launch day Evo replaced due to the broken power button issue with a refurbished unit. It has worked flawlessly since I got it about 3 weeks ago. It is hardware version 0004.
I had a similar problem to yours. The 3g radio went out on my 31 day old evo, back when i got mine on launch day. Even though I was 1 day over the 30 day exchange policy, they refused to give me a new one. I went through 6 refurbs before they finally decided to give me a new one. Each one was ridiculously bad. One wouldn't turn on. One had a bad charging and hdmi port. One had a whole section of the screen that didn't work. And the worst one, when I got it out of the box, the screen was literally in two pieces. The entire glass part was not glued to the actual phone. I immediately took it back to the store that ordered it for me, and they refused to replace it, saying that I was the one who broke it, even though I didn't even activate it yet. I had to fight with Account Services and customer support for over 2 weeks to get them to finally get me a new one. Everyone I talked to ASSURED me their refurbs were "completely normal" and "rebuilt to factory specs". I didn't know factory specs included the phone coming in two pieces.
On a side note, my girlfriend went through the same thing with Verizon with her old phone last year. It was a touch screen phone, she went through 5 refurbs until they decided to get here a new one. Same thing, every one was so bad. Three of them, the touch screen didnt work at all. One the vibrate didn't work. One would not connect to the internet. And they said the same thing, "all our refurbs are completely tested to work just like a new unit". Yeah right.
That is pretty interesting, pretty crappy of Sprint to do that to you.
However, from my experiences they have some sort of a 3 refurb rule, or it may be 4 and then they are supposed to give you a new phone. I am not sure that this is still a policy but I know I have fallen back on it a few times. Do some digging and see if you can confirm that it still is or bring it up to them at the store. If they **** you around call retention and let them know your fed up and I am more than positive they will take care of you.
Went through 2 myself in the past two weeks and when the third one came in the same way, the rep game me a NIB 004. Guess it all depends on who you speak with and how their day is going! The issue on all of these was the 'sunspot', as I call it. Had my first evo screen replaced 4 months in last year for the same thing. Good Luck!
i just got a refurb last week. i waited over a week cause they were on back order. first thing i did was root it and load cm7 on it. no problems so far.
when i had to get a refurbed moment last year it was a different story though.
My update... Sprint replaced the blown speaker. Had to go back again today because the phone kept overheating and rebooting. A nice technician named Sandi gave me a new EVO. It came with gingerbread, so no root for me. But I am so glad to be through with the broken refurbs. If I had gotten one more broken phone I think I would have had to ditch Sprint. I'm honestly very relieved.

Anyone having any problem getting refurb replacements? Backordered wise?
Seems to me like you would have saved yourself a lot of headaches if you just checked the phone before you left the store. Everytime I get a phone from Sprint, I go sit in my car for a few minutes and make sure everything is working. It's better than driving all the way home and realizing my phone is broken later. Plus if you come back in right after they give you the phone, and show them the problem, they wont be able to say that it's something you did.
