hi guys ,i tried to search with the keyword "flicker" but there's no similar result returned, so i decided to start this thread.
I'm using I9000 Asia set, stock firmware is DXJPA. Currently on Darky Rom 9.4.
Before this i was on DXJPA + speedmod K13A, things was fine(i suppose). Right after i flash my kernal to K13C, i notice sometimes my screen flickers, i thought its just some magnetic interruption. But the longer i observe, it seems to appear once in a while.
So i thought its the kernal that causes it, i flash it back to stock kernal and did a reset, apparently the problem still around. And even now i'm on darky rom 9.4, i'm still having this issue. So guys, did any of you faced the same problem ? and any of you manage to find a solution to it?
Ya I'm having the same problem. I always thought it had something to do with automatic brightness.. Not sure though...

I have the same issue, but only on wifi - while turning it on or when the signal is weak.
It must be hardware though - my roommates SGS, bought on the same day, doesn't have this problem.
I have the same problem too.
you guys on stock or custom rom?
I'm on stock.
Come to think about it, I only had this problem when I'm browsing internet..
So it could be related to wifi as mentioned above.
Anyone have better ideas?
I'm not really concerned about it since it rarely happens, but if someone can tell us the fix... it would be awesome!
Clear your phone flash stock rom Eclair with pit 512 and repartition checked .
If that solves the problem you can upgrade to Froyo .
That way you eliminate fault from a custom rom .
jje
I'm pretty sure it's not sw related, but it's hw defect - at least in my case.
I have the problem from the start and on 5 different roms - all stock (JG1 - stock default, JP3 and JP5 - got at the Samsung service, JPO and JPY - via Kies).
Someone with the same problem went to the service with the phone, where they've replaced the screen and the problem was gone. So I can assume that the screen was faulty or some connectors or something similar.
I wasn't comfortable when I first noticed the flickering, but it's not a big problem for me now. Thankfully it's not getting worse, but if it's going to, I will certainly service the phone.
I also have this problem, mainly when browsing internet (on both stock and opera browser), but occasionally in other apps too.
I am running an older docrom with damien's ultimate kernel.
I figured it is a hardware issue, because it only started happening after my phone got dipped in sea water (lol).
lets try to gather some info among us so that we can narrow down the possibilities.
I shall start 1st. Below are my configurations
1) Always on Edge (for battery saving purpose)
2) On Darky Rom 9.4
3) Flicker mostly in browser, sometimes in other apps, and homescreen as well
I'm still sure it's a hardware problem, but still, if it's going to help anyone:
- also always on GSM mode only (have tried on 3G - no difference)
- stock JPY (the problem persists through 5 different stock ROMs)
- only get it when turning wifi on until it is connected or it keeps flickering when wifi reception is bad and it doesn't connect
- it can be best seen if I pull notification bar down and turn on wifi
Now that I think of it, i've only noticed it with wi-fi on, and it doesn't matter whether i have an app running or not. i've seen it on the home screen many times.
GB 2.3.3 xxjvk
Change your bootloader
I also had it when I was using Darky's v9.4 and v9.5.
I flashed a new bootloader and upgraded to v10 RC3 and its gone.
To solve it, you will probably have to flash 2.3.3 with new bootloaders and then back to v9.5 if you want to keep Darky's FroYo. v9.5 is stable
Oh found the thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011701
Flashing bootloader is 1 thing that will likely brick your phone if accidents happen.
Kids, please do not try this at home.
is it possible to change my bootloader without flashing my rom?
Yes, but that's even riskier. If you flash an entire rom and it's going to fail, it will most likely fail during the factoryfs part as opposed to the bootloader part if flashing alone

I have just upgraded via the reg patch from JPU. No issues other than the lock screen stops working after about half an hour. So when I press the button to switch the phone back on it goes bacl to the last screen with no lock screen
I have cleared cache in download mode and turned the phone on and off but again after half an hour I get the same issue the lock screen stops working
I have tried both with the normal slide and the pattern
Any ideas
Probably needs a factory reset - that sorts most errors like this kind.
I updated today via kies (reghack, XXJPU) and I don't have any problems... so maybe an application that make a problem?
The first time I flashed I changed the product code back from KOR to XEU. I think Kies caused this for some reason. Second time I flashed with odin (much more reliable!) and it's fine. However, the first time I experienced horrible battery drain. As for now, I'm keeping an eye on it.
I'm also missing the Pure Calendar Widget from the market unless it's been pulled. Tried all sorts to find that again but it's not there.
Overall, JPX is the slickest and best running firmware I've used on my SGS so far.
My only complaint is that my SGS really struggles with battery drain on XXJPX stock. JPU was very good (but was buggy).. Prefer JPX but without the battery drain.
I've cleared the battery stats etc, as well..
I had some problems with frozen accelerometer but after a Factory reset it worked again.
I flashed to JPX (from JPU) and I have this weird bug where my phone still thinks it's connected to the USB. has anybody else experienced this?
Also, my quadrant score isn't nearly as high as it used to be when I had JPU.
Sooooo, good morning....
Now I see that there is again a new firmware out... JPY... maybe they found a problem whit the battary drain....
greetings from croatia
I have FC with Google Goggles and Barcode Scanner
So... Do you recommend upgrading on kies to 2.2.1
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
Hi Guys,
I've upgraded yesterday from XPU to XPX - all done with Odin - Kies doesn't recognize my phone despite of any recommended procedures. Stuff it don't need ballast.
I've have had some troubles with XPU: changing my country code from DV2 (Vodafone D2, Germany) to KOR - I had have to edit /efs/ndata.bin, battery drops to 98% just after removing phone from charger, instability with some apps ...
But now after some reboots without factory reset my phone and I are happy. Best firmware ever seen.
Cheers - and Seasons Greetings from merry old Germany ;-)
Chris
Yes definately although there is a new firmware out!!!

On the stock kernel?
Hello,
There have been numerous attempts to reason this issue with galaxy, but none succeeded so far (as far as I saw)...
The problem is, that with any Froyo ROM for i5800 the phone has these "stutters" or breaks during a call and sometimes also while playing music.
Possible causes identified by me (what could cause this):
- CPU usage too high (unlikely)
- RAM too low (also unlikely)
- Battery problem (that is my guess)
- Some problem with the proxim. sensor
I think so because when I called with loudspeaker enabled, there was almost never when stutter occured. But when I called the regular way, after screen went off, stuttering became almost permanent...
I post this issue to find an answer regarding this, so please STICK TO THE TOPIC
Thanks!

Yeah, this was present with any Froyo ROM (stock JPF, JPM - and also with Kyrillo, Indro, Apoc, and Lesta as well). I'm currently testing with Eclair stock.
No it's not because of CPU overclock, coz it was present even before OC kernels.
I've got XXJPF and no problems(except inside contacts BackButton is not responting).

Not the problem, thanks however. I've tried everything. I don't want to risk any damage to the phone (these cracks sound like eletric discharges, and they can be heared via the headset too, if there is no music or call). I think these ROMs (JPM, JPF and JPN) are somehow handling the battery wrong. This can be the reason why the phone dischareges quiclky during calls.
Solution: I found no signs of these error on Eclair ROMs, however. Therefore I reverted back to 2.1. My only problem now is the lack of Froyo features - I feel much more safe, however.
Also, I made a custom Eclair ROM in the process for SG3. I will be posting it on the forums sometime, I think for people, who have the same problem...
When placing phone call my device crashes with purple led flash.
cell signal normal, text messages work, cell data works
I'm not sure if problem lies in hardware or software(bad flash, radio, ect)
I replaced the digitizer
Currently running Kang ICS RC0-9.0 | faux123-v025
Had same problem with Neutrino 2.1
Any ideas or test suggestions?

No, I couldn't get the zip for 4.91 to flash for some reason so I did Neutrino 2.5 after sever data formats.
update: on on GB 4.5, same problem persists
SOLVED
How did you solve the issue?
I'm having the same issue too. It's only in regular cell calls. The phone becomes unresponsive to everything, screen wont turn back on, etc. Battery pull is the only thing that has solved it for me. It's happened three/four times in the last month, at least. I'm running CM7 Faux 1.1, back when it was originally released. This isn't just a CM9 issue.
Well the issue was less solved but minimized in the end.
After many fastboot formats and CWM flashes, I ended up fruitcaking back to 2.3.4, that's when the problem started to be less of a hassle; meaning the screen would come back on and buttons/soft-keys were again responsive and a battery pull wasn't needed.
I re-installed Turls ICS and the problem is still present, but it doesn't hinder making or receiving calls, I just hold my breath with each.
I'm suspecting that when flashing either the kernels or roms, things are not getting cleaned and formatted as well as they ought to be. I know there is a universal CWM zip floating around somewhere (seen it in the skyrocket forum). We've had similar issues in the skyrocket forum where remnants of previous flashes were being persistent, or resistant to format attempts.
I messed with it for hours trying to fix so I cannot say for sure what I did to make it a non-immediate issue, but if others describe like problems I try and help.

I was having the issue with Neutrino 2.1, 2.5; Turl ICS, and stock 2.3.4. The latter seemed to be the most effective method I employed to fix, without bricking.
Not everyone flashes their phone, but all of us suffer from bugs.
I thought of starting an exclusive thread just for discussing the bugs present on the official SGS2 Firmware.
With the experts here, hopefully they can be clarified, resolved and become history
So, i'll start with the bugs i found.
My firmware version is I9100GDDKL1
First issue
When i get a call and answer it, the screen times out, as the proximity sensor signals it to. But often AFTER the call, and after i take the phone away from my ear to hang up, the screen does not come back again, instead it goes blank black. The call is still on as i am not able to press the end call soft button.
Pressing the home key OR the power key have no affect, it last for 10-20 seconds maybe and then it comes back on its own AFTER the person on the other side hangs up.
Any ideas? This is a sensor, or a software glitch?
Second Issue
Sometimes the phone just loses connectivity. Alot of times its within the city. Its odd, because normally others using the same network do not face this issue.
I have to then manually re-connect to the network.
What issues can these be?
Third Issue
I have noticed this twice now. Phone starts acting funny, as in no signal and does not restore it. I restart it, but when i do, the entire home screen and app drawer is gone. Its blank. All other phone functions work just fine.
I restart again a couple of times, but no luck. So i finally open the back cover, take out the battery, sim and SD Card and put them back again. After that when i switch it on again, it works just fine.
Software or Hardware problem?
This thread is a great idea i think.
My firmware version is I9100XWLP4.
I have only one issue, the same as the first issue in the op, been using this firmware for about a week now, and thats the only problem i have come accross so far.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jesse
My PDA is i9100XWKI4 and GB on it.
First two issues are happening with my SGS2 also, but twice in a week or thrice in a week only. I think proximity sensor have some HW issue.
For calls, even phone shows good signal, but calls are dropped, before I thought it was the problem with other end party, but realized that it is SGS2 problem.
My firmware is i9100xxlpq and I have none of these issues. Maybe you could try flashing the rom I'm using.

We can solve alot of issues by simply flashing it, but i wanted to know if there is some way that we can solve them with simpler adjustments/enhancements?
Also if we conclude that something is an hardware issue, then we should just go to a service center and get it corrected, shouldn't we?
There isn't a great deal you can do about most 'problems' if you stick to stock & don't root or run custom firmware.
Short of sending it back to Samsung. Who will probably only flash the latest firmware (if there is any) if the problem isn't hardware related. Which you could easily do yourself.
Rooting/running custom firmware gives you the ability to solve problems that otherwise wouldn't be fixable (and definitely produces problems that otherwise wouldn't happen as well sometimes obviously).
I don't disagree with you that rooting/ flashing custom roms will solve most software issues or atleast lead a way to solving them.
All i am saying is, that is there a way to solve some of these problems otherwise.
Also we can find out if our phone has an hardware issue, because if some problem is too uncommon, then it probably IS isolated and can be a hardware fault.
I think all do update their firmware. I Infact changed to the latest one recently, but it didn't do any good.
I am not against flashing man .
Just keeping it as a last resort.

Hardware is relatively simple if you do not have a problem on GB firmware then it is not hardware .

You mean to say there can be NO hardware fault at all?
Hello all,
I just bought an S3 and updated it to 4.1.1 stock. I like this device but I am very disapointed by how buggy is the stock 4.1.1 ...
I currently own a Xoom running the stock 4.1.2 and never found a single bug using it for months.
I only use my S3 with stock 4.1.1 and already met multiple annoying bugs !
- if I set the Wifi to auto-disable when the S3 goes to the lock screen, then, when Wifi does re-enable, it connects well to the router but I cannot acess to internet. This bug does not exist on the S3 mini running stock 4.1.1.
- the S3 randomly reboot, it rebooted 3 times in about 12 hours.
- the email application has a display problem : the screen flashes black when I scroll an email.
- some apps crash with no reason : stock web browser, stock camera app ...
- the stock browser bookmarks preview is not available : all bookmarks are displayed with a grey icon instead of the web page preview.
- some features in the parameters menu has no effect, they just don't work even when activated : the feature which disables the screen when you're not watching it for exemple, there are some others which did not work but I can't remember which ones.
And as I am only using it for 24 hours I am afraid of discovering some more bugs soon ...
Am i the only one to meet these bugs ?
Is CM10 for S3 less buggy ?
Does anyone know when stock 4.2 should be available for the S3 ?
Thanks
i have 0 problems you mentioned.. try a reset and see if it solve. or just install a custom rom ( you can always return to stock in case of warranty's necessity)
Yes, I already tried to power off the S3. I don't want to use a custom ROM for now, I think for such a high level device I shouldn't have to. I can't understand why so many bugs could be found in less than 24 hours on a stock ROM, this is not serious from Samsung : they waited several months before releasing Jelly Bean for the S3 and finally the ROM is as buggy as an early custom ROM ...
This is a big dispointment for me.
no power off, but a wipe at factory reset
try it!
Settings---> backup and restore--->factory reset ( is the last in list, don't know how is written as i'm using italian language)
Suggest you have a problem and you return the phone either for exchange or refund .
- the S3 randomly reboot, it rebooted 3 times in about 12 hours.
>>> That suggests problem with the phone or an app its not normal behavior .
some apps crash with no reason : stock web browser, stock camera app
>> As above .
Twelve hours and you updated
OTA or Kies update or a self update ????
.. Any of those going wrong could give above symptoms .
Does anyone know when 4.2.1 should be available for the S3 ?
>>> No known date .
jje
I am using the stock 4.1.1 release so I just did the OTA update, everything went fine during the upgrade.
If I am the only one to meet these problems it may be due to hardware issues ... Too bad ...
Not seen any of those bugs at all on ICS nor on JB.
You need to do a complete factory reset.
I don't understand why I would need to do a factory reset : I am just using it for less than 24 hours ...
That's crazy if I already need to do this ... Loosing data and reinstalling everything ... Please, not yet !
I am more an more thinking of installing CM10 ROM, but it seems to have too many issues for now.
I wonder if I just shouldn't get my money back ...
I also suspect you got bad luck and received the only faulty device in store.
Been using mine constantly for 10 days on stock rom without any problems.
Earlier today, I could not wait for 4.1.2 any longer and flashed this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1944035
Been using it also without any problems.
No such problems for me, I expect there was a slight issue when you updated. I would just reflash via Odin and see if that fixes your problems.

because, maybe, in OTA process something is gone wrong ( like some datas of application not compatible or corrupted during the process)
Might want an exchange as you may have a faulty device..
Considering you're having that many problems in such a short period of time, I think you should return the phone and get a replacement. It's clearly a faulty device. If I were you, I wouldn't bother trying to reflash firmware for it or anything, I'd just go straight to wherever I bought it and demand a new one. Good luck with whatever you end up doing.
Never had a random reboot on my s3 running stock. It has happened running custom kernels but that's a different kettle of fish entirely.

So I finally decided to do a factory reset. All my reboots / Wifi problems are gone now. But I still need a more time to judge this as my problems came after a few hours of use. Thanks to all of you for your advices !
Still, the feature wich uses the front camera to power off the display if you don't watch it does not work at all ...
Dude, return it asap. Mine also did that the first week before totally failing and getting stuck in the inicial samsung logo without possible recovery. Very high chances of happening the same to yours. Plenty of "omfg my phone's totally dead" threads around to confirm this, don't be another one.

OK, so this one is a real bug. Not a big deal as I don't want to use it anyway (I was just curious to try it) because I guess leaving the front camera working may decrease battery life and performances.

No problems here, Factory reset (power off the phone, push the volume up + home + power button continuously)
Choose factory reset and you should be okay.
