New Nexus S For AT&T
Hello,
Has anyone rooted, installed a custom ROM on the newly released Nexus S on AT&T yet.
I have the unlocked T-Mobile Nexus S rooted, and running a custom ROM, and was wondering if the AT&T branded one will root, and be able to accept the same custom ROM's that are used on the T-Mobile model.
Thank you in advance for any answers!
Matt
It's already up for sale? Link?
Its a nexus s you don't worry about root ....that's the point of the phone

It should be the same as the T-Mobile one, the only difference is the radio.

Got mine today. Everything seems fine.. Of coarse, no 720p. The camera for pictures is amazing thou. Best I've seen so far. I have a bad feeling about the HSPA cap on upload. I'm getting anywhere from 1500 to 2500 on the download which is good but the upload, I can't get more than 400. I've tested like 50 times with the same results. Of coarse, it can be fixed with a root and NEW ROM but the ROM out of the box may have this disabled. (Stupid!) Other than that, screen seems pretty good. For some reason it's not really poppin like I hoped but it's definitly super AMOLED. My GOD this thing is a fingerprint magnet. If it had a fingerprint reader, it would be THE ENTIRE PHONE! Maybe I should have picked up the ugly ass white one.. hmm. If you have any questions, ask away...

Mine will be here on thursday. I just upgraded to the tethering plan so ATT can' say **** to me for using tethering now. Never used it before but now I have that option.
This thing is gonna be sweet.
Sweet. It's a real nice device. The flash in the stock browser is WAY faster and smoother than the atrix and definitly faster than the thunderbolt. I tried the thunderbolt and for some reason, the HTC broswer not only runs dog slow but it renders flash images very poorly. Two things I'm pissed with on the nexus s... You can't view animated GIF's or pics thru the messaging app (MMS animated pics/GIFF'S) and you can't intergrate facebook contacts..? Are they for real with this?? LOL I was able to do both on my old dell streak... Yea, I know... I can get handsent to get the GIFF MMS support back but wanted to stay stock android which is part of the reason why I picked up the nexus s. Other than that, amazing device.
That is even more of a reason I paid big bucks for it. I got rid of Facebook and don't use mms that much.
I use YM to chat w/ the wife and others.

Hoping this comes out in the US by the end of the month. I was considering an Inspire 4G but I'll go for a Nexus if I have a choice.
Any pics of this on AT&T and with 3G?
this is great news, hopefully the more people we get the more gets contributed to the nexus s. ^________^!
Its coming here to Rogers which is same 3g as att on April 14

I'm actually really happy with it. Ever since I got team fenix's froyo on here, gmail has been syncing properly, I have all the apps I need. I play games non stop in lab instead of listening to lecture. The thing isn't a battery whore and can last up to 3 sometimes 4 days on stock battery. It's a great mid range phone. I have a laptop for movies and tv shows.
I love it, and I never regret anything in life i just hope tmobile would have told us about the mytouch hd so I could have waited for that, hopefully they have it in white.

I love mine. I had a BB for 3 years and this is so much better and you can root it and make it your phone. I am not crazy about customer service from T-Mobile latley but the phone rock. Easy to root and works like a charm...
To be honest I regret getting it. Not because anything is wrong on the phone at all but because there are better phones right around the corner. If this is the only decent phone with a keyboard and sense UI that comes out then I won't feel so bad but it really sucks to have a phone with just 600 mhz when phones with 1 ghz are dropping everywhere. I don't mean to rant but I just don't want anyone else to make the mistake of purchasing an almost outdated phone. September should be big for tmobile ust try to wait till then.

I've thought about this too. However, it's how technology works. The latest and greatest is always just around the corner. If you upgraded every time something better came out, you'd be buying a new phone once a month.

Switched from HD2, and completely satisfied, not worried about the 1ghz. Seems superfluous to me, I don't plan on running any benchmarks on this phone so, what is the point really. This phone is snappier than any 1ghz phone I've used, only phone I envy is the evo with the hdmi output.
*edit*
Extended battery would be nice though.

I am satisfied with this phone. It has great features and I personally like the sense ui and feel its better than the vanilla interface. My gripes with this phone are moreso with the manufacturer. This phone should have had a better cpu, more onboard space and it should not be as difficult as it is to send a mms message. Those are my only complaints. If, however, the rumors about the mytouch hd are true, then I am going to definitely purchase that phone out right and make this my backup phone.

Seems to be a great phone, little buyers remorse on not getting the Vibrant instead as it would be nice to have beefier hardware but it is a major plus to have the physical keyboard of the slide, and sense ui is rather nice.

I'd give up 4G that I can't get where I live anyway, if they'd give back the $10/mo I have to pay.
I wanted this phone mostly for the 4.3" screen. The 4G isn't all that important to me.

I would actually bet money that that is their first LTE phone. They're supposed to be releasing a LTE aka 4G phone this November, this might be it.
I kinda want to go steal me one right now..
Once you get 4g you will never want to be without it. I am getting 3mb - 11mb everywhere and I am amazed at the speed difference in all apps.
This is exactly the evo with a bigger kickstand (which I would love a bigger kickstand, one that can support it in portrait mode would be killer)

We already know that HTC was full of ****. There are plenty of kernels available with unlocked FPS.
I knocked my N1 into the toilet the other day. I took it out, dried it off, removed battery and sd/sim. Sealed it with rice in a tupperware for a couple of days. When I turned it on I was shocked. It worked! Just as good as new for a whole day. Problem is it hasn't worked since that day. Just get a flashing green and yellow charging light.
I called HTC and they gave me an estimate of $55 to $190 for repair. My dilemma is repair or replace.
I really like my wife's Nexus S and would really like to go to T-Mobile with her, but my N1 was ATT. Any suggestions?
IMO it depends on your contract with AT&T. If you're grandfathered in on unlimited data, I would stick with that. If you're not though, no reason not to switch for the Nexus S, it is the faster device and has a front facing camera.
I forgot to mention. I'm temporarily living in Brasil. I will be in the USA from May 10th to June 8th. That's my window for purchase or repair. Both of our phones are pure Google and stock. No contracts involved.

This would be my worst nightmare. Have you looked into any used N1's for sale on craigs list of flebay?
Try a Mytouch 4g
I have both an N1 and a MT4G. They are both about as fast, same size and weight, but the MT has FM radio and a front camera. The MT runs on 2.2.2 and I use Visionary and Titanium Pro to temproot and remove the TMo bloatware, and Juice Defender to increase battery life.
I had the N1 up to 2.3.3 but Visionary, Titanium and Juice Defender all don't work on 2.3.3, nor does trackball wake (which is desirable to avoid failure of the power switch). Green Power does about as much as Juice Defender to improve battery life and does work on 2.3.3, so I have put that on my N1. Nevertheless I can see no advantage to 2.3.3. for the N1 and went back to 2.2.2.
I like the Sense interface and some other features on the MT and with Visionary you can remove the more egregious bloatware. You can also use any of a number of GUI apps to make the MT have exactly the same GUI as the N1.
So it's a tossup between the N1 and MT4g; both can be made to have the same interface, both same size/weight/screen; but the MT has forward camera and FM radio. Also the MT can probably be bought relatively cheaply now, as phones with more advanced processors are on the way.
I like my setup on both my N1 and MT4g well enough that if/when there is ever an update to 2.3.3 for the MT I will decline it, as I have done for the N1--at least until a version of Visionary that will let me temproot the device appears.

Do you care about custom ROMs?
I really like the pure Google experience. I like to be able to upgrade as soon as new versions are released and be able to do it manually without waiting for the OTA. I also like a phone without having to deal with a lot of carrier issues. I really like what I hear about the Galaxy S ll but as I understand it only will be available with the Touch Wiz interface and you have to deal with carrier released updates for Android version updates. I really don't want to get involved with rooting and roms.
I enjoy reading about the different roms (and even considered rooting and using different roms at one time) but I'm able to all the customization I need with stuff available in the market or by 3rd party. I loved my N1. My only complaints were the lousy display and a little bit of the 3g issues. I guess the Nexus S solves those two issues.
I really value a lot of the opinions that are shared on this forum and would never consider anything other than Andriod. Just struggling to make a decision before next month.

If you are wanting a Nexus S, you can get an ATT compatible version. Negri Electronics sells an unlocked Nexus S for ATT 3G bands. Its $589, but that shouldn't bother anyone who was willing to put down $529 for a N1 back in the day, such as myself

Wanted to know if anyone else has noticed this lately. I lost my Evo and, unfortunately, did not have insurance on it. So I was stuck buying a new one, but when I went to the Sprint store on Friday (12/2/2011), I was told they didn't have any, that it was discontinued (which perplexed me, seeing as the original still has the best tech specs), and that Sprint had ordered the stores to immediately ship back any they had in the back.
He informed me it's been officially replaced by the Evo Design 4G, which after doing some research, realized is a locked phone with a signed bootloader. Seems Sprint is taking action to do away with all the free WiFi hotspots that rooted Evos aren't paying $30 a month for. I don't like the looks of this.
Needless to say, I had to find one online, which ended up being cheaper than I expected. (Best Buy wanted $600 for a Evo 4G with no activation, got a new one for $250 online)
Anyone else noticed this in their area? (I'm in Boston)
The EVO4G is at the end of life and is by no means has the best tech specs anymore. Plus it also has a locked bootloader but it was worked around for root.

I should have been more specific. It has the best specs in the Evo family. This is different than just a locked bootloader, it's a new form of digital signature that is, I'm assuming, the reason the device (Evo Design 4g) has no xda page. Plus the revolutionary.io method is not compatible with it, they've made that very clear on the site. And that method works on all other Evos and most other HTC phones.
Check out this forum.. if you haven't already..lets get the design some support and it's own forum!

4" to 4.3" Isn't that significant of a difference. I'm with you, I like bigger screens... but for most people that's not a problem. Although i can see how it seems smaller. The Evo 3D is the same way, it's narrower and taller than the Evo 4g, but seems smaller. The biggest factor in screen is the qHD (960x540). Although i have no experience with the phone, the MSM8655 chip should also be a huge improvement over the qsd8650.

I agree, when i got my Evo 3D in the mail... I was like "WTF, It's smaller!!" Nah, im assuming its for the qHD resolution.
hi all. last night i flashed cm10 (epinter). loved it for an alpha. but than today i went to the mall cause my wife wanted to buy some stuff, meanwhile i passed my time to bestbuy mobile. she was eligible for an upgrade device. and i discovered that i could trade my beloved atrix 4g for a value of 150$. long story short I added 50$ (+36$ activation fee for att suckers) and ended up with the SGS3. bigger and better finally true.
almost a year with atrix 4g have been amazing. would never forget the first bootloader unlock, the first cm7 flash, the first miui emotions... cm9 and cm10 last night. thank you very much all the developers and testers all the community.

You're gonna love the GS3. I upgraded about 3 weeks ago. Screen, speed, and ICS are awesome. Touchwiz is also much better than Motoblur (although I've already started using Nova as my launcher).
That said, my daughter is loving the Atrix and lapdock that I handed down to her. Such an awesome phone that I couldn't part with it as long as someone in my family could use it.
There are a few areas however that the Atrix still beats the GS3. The Atrix bluetooth radio is better. Hooks up faster to my car, and has significantly better range with my headphones at the gym. The cell radio on my GS3 also flips between 3G and Edge more than the Atrix did (sorry, no LTE in my area yet). Also, I'm sad to say that the Atrix has better battery life too.
So, bottom line is that the GS3 is an awesome phone (really love the camera too), but the Atrix still holds its own for an older phone. Gotta love all the choices we have with Android!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Our company has 4 atrix's... 2 are stock blur and 2 are ics/jb and afaik there are a lot less dropped calls/freezing/glitching on the stock blur roms than the experimental kangs. The only complaints with android 4 is the camera problems! I sure wish motorola would hurry up and release ICS or a lot more people are going to jump ship.
I know I'm eyeing the SGS3. Itis pretty much guaranteed to get updated CM builds., I don't give two craps about Touchwiz, though. The only thing holding me back is that, specs wise, it's not a huge upgrade from the Atrix. So I keep thinking it's probably not worth the upgrade cost.

The GS3 is too big for my liking. Even my SGSII I wish would have a smaller form factor sometimes as well. Atrix with a TPU Case IMO is the perfect size for a cell phone.
If the next Nexus phone has the same size as the Atrix, plus had MicroSD support. Oh man... Yeah that would hold me over for a LONNNNNG time...

Yea, did you have to buy a phone from them for them to buy yours? Could anybody just walk in and sell them an Atrix for 150 outright?
I'm gonna give att a call tomorrow and see what they say about this. Hopefully I can trade mine with a skyrocket without giving them any extra money.

I'm using my atrix on AT&T right now without a data plan. Unless they just did a straight swap on phones (kind of like what Microsoft did with their promotion a little while ago), I'm guessing I can't do this.
You can always sell on eBay or Amazon. That'll net more than a bestbuy trade in

How do you not have at least the minimum data plan? I dont use any data each month (all wifi) but still have to pay them for it.

I do the same thing as you and att forced me to have the minimum data plan(200MB). Can you have a smartphone without a data plan on att?

150$ with the charger. 145$ without.

Bhavin above said hes on att with no data plan
And on another note, the atrix is by far the "crappiest" phone on the market. You're obviously not familiar with the Motorola flipside that att STILL sells but can't even get a proper recovery and is forced to stay completely stock, although rooted, if you want a proper working phone.

when i went to bestbuy mobile i had jellybean (epinter) rooted and bootloader unlocked. they couldn't believe their eyes.
i asked them if there will be any difference if the atrix was unlocked. they said NO!
I must say that I actually bought the atrix from them, so they searched for the receipt on their system and found it.
dont know if atrix 4g bought elsewhere can be trade in on bestbuy mobile.

hi all. last night i flashed cm10 (epinter). loved it for an alpha. but than today i went to the mall cause my wife wanted to buy some stuff, meanwhile i passed my time to bestbuy mobile. she was eligible for an upgrade device. and i discovered that i could trade my beloved atrix 4g for a value of 150$. long story short I added 50$ (+36$ activation fee for att suckers) and ended up with the SGS3. bigger and better finally true.
almost a year with atrix 4g have been amazing. would never forget the first bootloader unlock, the first cm7 flash, the first miui emotions... cm9 and cm10 last night. thank you very much all the developers and testers all the community.
specially many thanks to cyanogen and the team, turl, stevendeb, epinter. thank you guys.
keep up the good work.

Were you elegible for an upgrade? Can anyone randomly walk in with an atrix and walk out with any phone?

No parting
I dont think I will be changing to any other phones mainly because of the fingerpring scanner. Its the best and unique feature. Since I have had it, its fast and easy login. If the Atrix 3 the fingerprint scanner, than I might be next..
