Help! Droid 2 stuck in boot loop.(solved.)

Ok, so I was playing around with the new Root Tools app and made a few, what I thought were safe, tweeks to the system and rebooted the phone. It gets past the M screen, runs the boot animation and then starts the boot animation again. No way out except to pull the battery.
How can I get it out of this endless bootloop? If I have to factory reset and start again from scratch, so be it. I would just like to know how.
I've tried holding down different button combinations on boot but haven't come up with the right sequence I guess.
I've also tried pulling the battery as the animation starts, then putting it back in and rebooting which is supposed to call up the recovery mode, but it doesn't. I'm not sure what to try next? I wish these things had a reset button
It's a Droid 2 Rooted with the stock rom running Froyo 2.2. I have the Bootstrap recovery loaded and did a backup with the clockwork recovery. I also have, and use, Titanium Backup Pro for Root.

After bootlooping pull the battery and put it back in. Then plug the droid 2 in with the cable either wall or USB will work. Then turn it on and it should get you recovery. The phone has to be completely off when you plug it in though.

EDIT: I tested it and USB won't work (at least for me) better off just using the wall plug.

Thanks, but that not working either. When I plug in the cable after the battery pull it starts up automatically and goes to the battery charge screen. I then shut it off and start it back up with no battery but plugged in and it goes right back into the boot loop after the M screen.

The batter charge screen is what you want. Just press the power button after you get the charge screen and you'll be booted into clockwork.
But in order to factory reset from a bootloop you have to flash an .sbf theres a few different tutorials. One in Windows, Another in linux/mac, and another in linux but for windows machines through an Ubuntu livecd(that I made).

Oh, OK I thought it was going to go right into recovery mode. Good to know.
I finally figured out how to get into the stock recovery and bootloader, so I tried to run the stock restore but after it wiped the data, it couldn't find the recovery file! So then I read in another post about using RSDlight 4.9 to do an sdf restore so I used that method. Of course while it was flashing I did come across your Ubuntu method and that does look like it would be a simpler process. I'm going make one of those CD's to have for next time.
Anyway, I was able to get it back to stock. It looks like most of my stuff is still on the SD card, so that's a bonus! I'll have to re-root before I can restore everything via Titanium, but that's going to be tomorrow's project. As for now just happy to to have my phone back. Especially before the wife (who has been telling me for weeks to stop F'in with it) found out .

[Q] Droid 2 on load screen

I rooted my Droid 2 and all went well. Then I tried to load the Epic Unleashed 2.5 rom and now I get to the load screen after the Motorola logo and it just keeps trying to load over and over accomplishing nothing. Is there anything that I can do to fix this? Any help please. Thanks all.

Did you bootstrap and make a backup? If not, time for an sbf.

Try wiping data/cache. Worth a shot before going straight to SBF.

True, try wiping first. And make sure you do that before any flash in the future.

I did use bootstrap and I also did do a backup. I also tried a wipe data factory reset. I tried to wipe the cache, but at the bottom it said,
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

It always says that it's not a problem. Are you able to boot up all the way?

It doesn't boot up all the way. It goes through the moto screen then into the rom start up screen then starts to loop.

Can you get back into Clockwork Recovery?
If you do a battery pull or shutdown your phone completely. Then plug it into the wall(while it's still off). Then power it on (even if it's on the battery screen). Now you should be in Clockwork and you can proceed to restore a backup.
If that doesn't work then I think you'll have to re flash your phone with the sbf. You can use this method HERE to do that. Hopefully you don't have to.

The only thing I can think of is trying it again before flashing. Or doing some battery pulls and trying to get in that way but I think the plugging in method works a lot better and a higher percentage of the time.
If you do end up flashing make sure you read about the versions if you have the OTA update to 2.3.2 then you have to use the 2.3.2 sbf. If you don't have it then it's ok to use the regular 2.2.0 or if you want the update you can use the 2.3.2 and you'll be at the same place just with the update installed. Then you'll have to reroot and then install the bootstrap and then the ROM you want.

[Q] Need Help-Can'tRemove Clockwork mod after factory reset

Can't remove clockwork mod after factory reset complete with .340 back. I have tried everything. I have read that I could remove 2 files in root exployer but am lost as to how to complete. Phone never been flashed. Just rooted with clockword Mod and rooted with Z4root. Please Help

Not too sure why you want to remove it. If you want to get rid of root and clockwork then use the SBF.

I still have a hard time understanding how people really think that doing a factory reset magically flashes the stock OS back. All it does it erase user data and apps. Use the root explorer method or sbf.

I have unrooted and have factory .340 but can't get rid of boot to clockwork mod. I have read sbf will not remove it, so I havent done it. i never flashed a rom, was just curious and wanted to learn. Just need help getting rid of clockwork mod at boot. I thought this was a place for help not downgrading people

This is the place for learning however there is a little doing on your part.
You want to learn but yet you wish to delete a primary tool to flash a Rom.
Your statements are contradictory in meaning.
Now with that said.

so I am banned from xda? I made a statment that is the way I felt and I dont know who you are but you must be a boss of somesort, don really know the chain of command, and I get a message from you I guess because I said he was degrading. In your read this first, your statmemt is to help noob's and be kind. If you will show me a kind word in his reply I will appoligize to him at once. So I guess I just need to know if you have banned me or what for just trying to get help.

After you SBF, do a factory reset using Motorola's recovery. When the phone boots back up, you will be unrooted and without Clockwork.

There are no stupid questions.
Here is the guide I followed to SBF my phone. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-hacks/68222-unbricking-your-droid-x.html. Depending on which OTA version your phone is on, you may need to track down the 2.3.15 Full SBF, or if on a newer version, you will need to get the 2.13.32 Full SBF and the 2.13.40 System-Only SBF. 2.13.40 is the latest OTA from Verizon.
After you follow the steps outlined about, your phone will have a mish-mash of Official OTA and whatever custom ROM you may have had. Power the phone off, and then hold the Home key while powering it back on. Release Power, but keep holding Home until you see a screen with a folder icon with a "!". Release Home, press Search, and then select Factory Reset. Once it completes, reboot the phone. The first boot will take 5-7 minutes of staring at the animated Motorola splash, and you will have a complete, non-rooted, stock ROM without Clockwork.

the problem he is having is that he DID the sbf completely and thats all and EVERY time he reboots it first boots into clockworkmod recovery without installing clockworkmod recovery

Well....you're in a pickle...wish I had the 2.3.340 sbf...I'll take 5 copies when it's out

If the SBF completes successfully, a factory reset from the Motorola recovery menu (can only be accessed using the key combo I mentioned earlier) will completely remove Clockwork. If Clockwork still boots, the restore was not done correctly.

For anyone who might want to remove the bootstrap recovery, outside of having to reload an SBF, the instructions below are what I used to remove Clockwork from my DX. (I was tired of it always booting into Clockwork when I powered my device off and on. I found this in another forum, which references a couple of other forums below.
Removing Bootstrap Recovery:
Removal from an Androidforums post:
UNINSTALL the Recovery APK (Droid X Bootstrapper) in Settings, Applications
Reboot
Run "adb shell"
Run "su"
Run "mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system"
Run "cp /system/bin/logwrapper.bin /system/bin/logwrapper"
Reboot
or
1. Reroot
2. Get root explorer in the market
3. Uninstall the bootstrap app
4. Go into root explorer to system/bin
5. In top right corner tap r/w
6. Delete the file called hijack
7. Delete logwrapper
8. Rename logwrapper.bin to just logwrapper
9. Reboot and it should be gone.

The commands can be used with terminal emulator do all the commands except for the first command. (Run adb shell)

are you turning your phone on while holding volume down ...if so that is why its booting into clockwork mod...but in all fairness you were contradicting yourself.... and I am a noob as well and having issues with the clockwork 3.0 but I have given up because i cant downgrade without errors and there are no answers on these forums about its solution so i will wait it out... uninstall clockwork will also not get you stock and I cant understand why the phone is booting into clockwork recovery and not the OS.. or did I misread and misunderstand your original question...

[Q] Getting to Clockworkmod Recovery the hard way

I have a rooted X stuck at the M logo(I can get to the stock recovery) and I want to know if there's a way to get to Clockworkmod.
I have Koush's bootstrap and Clockworkmod installed, so all I need is something that will trigger the bootstrap.
The backstory is that I was uninstalling Blur applications from ApeX and got a little overzealous, and now it won't boot(probably waiting for an application that's never going to start).

Ive heard that if you hold the down volume button when powering on, it will send you to bootstrap.

Try plugging in a usb cable and pull the battery and put it back in, turn it on with the usb still in.

I think you're in for an SBF Flash. I had a similar problem the other day (tried to install a new rom...foolishly didn't make sure the battery was charged.) I tried all the above and then wound up doing a flash. Once I was back to stock the then gained root (another story) I quickly loaded Bootstrapper & restored my primary ROM (Darkslide 4.1) and am now a happy camper again.

I eventually gave up and SBF'd to stock, rooted, and then reinstalled ApeX. I was able to keep /data through the whole process, so I didn't lose too much. Is there any way to set up clockworkmod that it will always load in place of the default recovery system?

I've had it installed the entire time. By default it only bootstraps/loads clockworkmod if you tell it to(specifically you need to be able to write to /data/.recovery_mode) so you can't just boot into it when your phone is off.
What I want is a way to essentially replace the stock recovery app.

So does Koush and the rest of the Droid X owners...

Rubix has this feature sorta. If u install rubix drod implemented a beta fix that should boot into recovery if the battery is left out for x mins typically 3-5. From what I understand as long as the /system isn't formatted after installing rubix even if u use a different Ron this fix will still work. Might be worth installing rubix just to get this feature... and chances are if u haven't tried it before u might not want to leave rubix

Unless someone cracks the bootloader there is no easy to overwrite the stock recovery on droid x

Coming from an Unrevoked Forever Incredible, I've been searching for the same thing. Found this on another forum:
Getting Into Clockwork In a Pinch for Droid X
I saw a write up on this in another thread and I thought we needed it here too. I use this trick a lot and took it for granted that everyone knew it. Say you can't get into your phone to reboot into recovery through the Bootstrap App. Here are the Steps to get into Clockwork and Restore a Backup.
1) Make Sure your Phone is Plugged into the Charger.
2) Battery Pull.
3) With the Phone still Plugged into the Charger replace the Battery.
4) Wait until your Phone enters the Charging State. ( The Battery Icon Charging)
5) Hit your phone's power button, it should Boot into Clockwork Recovery. It works like a Charm for me everytime.

I figured that^ out on accident. If your stuck in the M you obviously have to battery pull but this will also work if you just reboot with a wall charger plugged in.

If you install the liberty rom, there is a feature that allows you to go into CWM every time you turn on the phone in the settings menu

My phone isn't a brick but it might as well be, I flashed a CM7 build but didn't much like it so I never bothered to add the Google Apps, instead, I did a restore to my original MyTouch 4G backup but.... it didn't work, got a flashing screen, etc. so back to the CM7 build, now I can't run ROM Manager, it goes to the red triangle symbol, I can't run ADB, it won't find my phone, I can't root, it just keeps saying S=ON! Since I didn't add the Google Apps and can't now, I can't use the phone!
Am I out a MyTouch 4g? Is there anything that'll fix it?

What google apps are you looking for, 99% of them can be found online and installed. Have you tried the online Android market (it can send downloads directly to your device) https://market.android.com/
You might be able use visionary to temp root the device, that will get you started

Online market won't install because I've flashed my HD2 to Android so it keeps saying that everything is already installed.
Visionary won't temp root, nothing will, don't know why? Do you know just how many rooting proceedures there are on the WWW? I've tried each that I've found 3 or more times with no luck.
I'm going to try to see if the online market will allow me to install Root Explorer, that may help me some....
It won't. There seems no way to change phones???

When you tried to restore, did you flash the recovery back to version 2.x? You need a 2.x recovery (use 2.5.1.2) to flash CM6, stock, and other Froyo roms. This should let you restore back to stock. Supposedly clockworkmod 3.0.0.6 can flash back and forth between Froyo and Gingerbread roms, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks but whatever version of Clockworkmod I have is what I have since the critter won't allow anything to be changed???
I can't get into Clockworkmod so I think changing versions won't help but I can't change so it's sort of moot at this point. The phone will do either one of these things:
1. Boot normally into the partial CM7 build which isn't usable as explained elsewhere.
2. It'll do the hold Vol Dn and hit power boot but then it won't do anything, the only option that works is normal boot and then I'm right back into CM7.
3. I can select "restore" or boot normally and select ROM Manager and hit boot into recovery and it'll reboot to the error screen, red triangle with ! sign on it.

That is the stock Recovery (which doesn't do anything but display the lovely triangle).
If Rom Manager is running in your broken CM7 system, you could re-flash Clockwork Recovery.
You can also flash a Clockwork Recovery image using adb or Fastboot.

As mentioned the red triangle is the stock recovery. Not sure how you flashed CM7 with the stock recovery but for some reason it sounds like that is all you have on your phone. FYI...If you hold the vol up and power button at the red triangle screen it should boot you into the stock recovery.

When you say you went back to CM7 after trying to flash your backup, what steps did you take to try and go back? Was your backup made thru Rom Manager? Did you try to use Rom Manager to restore your backup?

Thanks, ROM manager is running but re-flashing Clockwork Recovery doesn't help anything, it completes successfully but any attempt to do anything with it gets me to the red triangle.
I wish I could flash a recovery image using ADB or Fastboot, neither will function.

Correct, that's all that's there or at least all I can access so far. Vol up + pwr does boot me into stock recovery but that doesn't help.... <sigh>

Yes, I did have S=off to flash. Steps trying to go back were none, really, after the restore failed the phone wouldn't do anything as detailed in my posts. The backup was made through Rom Manager and that's what I used to try the restore.

Wiped and factory reset several times with no change in the problem. I'd love to get CM7 to load correctly but since I didn't originally load the GAPPS it's pretty useless, no gmail, no contacts or calendar, no Android market (which means all that's on the phone is all I can get, the online market won't work as mentioned in a previous post.) I cannot flash a new recovery, that's what I've been trying to do for several days now.
I do have root access, I can use SuperUser but it doesn't seem to do anything. Attempts to re-root have failed.

i feel ya bro, the reason I am asking these questions is to try and figure out what you have tried and not tried. CM7 isnt useless if you can get it to load. Just because you dont have the gapps installed, that shouldnt do anything but make you not have the market and google apps. Do you have adb set up and will it recognize your device? The biggest question is why would it have turned s=on and why wouldnt rom manager be able to flash a new recovery. Rom manager has a problem making/flashing backups using 3.0.0.X recoveries so that is where this problem started I think. Thats why I am trying to get you a clean working CM7. Does it give you a error when trying to install recovery through rom manager? Have you tried going to applications/manage applications/all/Rom Manager and clearing the data?
If you have su access you might also be able to flash a new recovery via terminal emulator.

The reason I'm maybe not giving you all the information you need is that I have very bad arthritis in my hands and I try to type as little as possible, I'm sorry if I'm not being clear but don't hesitate to ask if you need more info.
Not having the gmail means no sync, can't import contacts or calendar, no apps means what I have on the phone is ALL I HAVE, I can't get anything else. That's why I say it's unusable.
ADB does not recognize the device.
Installing recovery through Rom manager results in red triangle.
I did clear Rom manager data as you suggested but it didn't help.
How could I flash recover through terminal emulator, I do have that and can access it and typing SU does give me the # prompt so that's helpful maybe? I'd need step by step directions because I'm very unfamiliar with using terminal emulator, I've only used it to follow directions given in the rooting instructions.

The reason I'm maybe not giving you all the information you need is that I have very bad arthritis in my hands and I try to type as little as possible, I'm sorry if I'm not being clear but don't hesitate to ask if you need more info.
Not having the gmail means no sync, can't import contacts or calendar, no apps means what I have on the phone is ALL I HAVE, I can't get anything else. That's why I say it's unusable.
ADB does not recognize the device.
Installing recovery through Rom manager results in red triangle.
I did clear Rom manager data as you suggested but it didn't help.
How could I flash recover through terminal emulator, I do have that and can access it and typing SU does give me the # prompt so that's helpful maybe? I'd need step by step directions because I'm very unfamiliar with using terminal emulator, I've only used it to follow directions given in the rooting instructions.

to flash a recovery image via terminal emulator if you are on cm7 is:
Type "su" and then enter the code below after putting the recovery on your sd card. Make sure you name it recovery.img
Code:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/[COLOR=black]recovery.img[/COLOR]
LMK if that works.

Put Recovery.img on card, booted up phone, started Terminal Emulator got:
export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$ export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$ su
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
#
And that's it, nothing happened at all, just went back to the # prompt.

As long as you named it recovery.img and not Recovery.img it should have worked. Try to boot into recovery by powering off your phone and then holding the vol but and power button at the same time. Then chose recovery. Or if you on CM7 just hold power button for a sec and then reboot and recovery.
LMK if that works.

I suspect it's a brick?

ok, I still dont believe its a brick. Are you running a rom at all? I mean does it boot into CM7 even though you dont have Gapps? Or is it totaly stuck on bootloop all the time. I am going to send you a PM with my Gtalk. Add me if you want and maybe it will make it a little easier to communicate and help.

It boots right up in CM7, if I'd added the Gapps at the beginning I'd just be running it happily I think? I'd be able to sync and get needed apps from the market, etc. etc.

Thanks, I'd really prefer to do it this way. Why? Because I'm really sick of messing with it and I hate to spend much time working on it now, I've resigned myself to having a very costly paperweight! Using the thread here allows me to check in once or twice a day when the urge strikes, besides, I really don't IM, never have, never could figure it out. I don't text either, it's blocked at T-Mo's website and on my phones as well. I'm not really a technophobe but I'm 99.2 % one.....

If you can install a .apk I can send you the market and a few things. We can try to get a few things going that way if you want. If we can get the market going you can get gmail and every thing else from there. will attach the market and tell you how to install if you want

If he's still s=on, he's not going to be able to flash recovery. You need to get s=off.
Grab the .apk for Visionary. Grab gfree. Grab an apk for a terminal emulator if you don't have one. Put them all on your sdcard, boot into CM7, and follow the instructions for the gfree method here:

If you don't have a file manager to get to them, you could try SMS'ing the download links to the phone and installing through the browser for the .apk's.

I can't install an APK. I got all the Google apps and put them on the SD card, if I click on one I get "couldn't parse the file" what ever that means?
Actuall, it did install the Market apk but it won't open.....
