[Q] Getting to Clockworkmod Recovery the hard way - Droid X General

I have a rooted X stuck at the M logo(I can get to the stock recovery) and I want to know if there's a way to get to Clockworkmod.
I have Koush's bootstrap and Clockworkmod installed, so all I need is something that will trigger the bootstrap.
The backstory is that I was uninstalling Blur applications from ApeX and got a little overzealous, and now it won't boot(probably waiting for an application that's never going to start).

Ive heard that if you hold the down volume button when powering on, it will send you to bootstrap.

Try plugging in a usb cable and pull the battery and put it back in, turn it on with the usb still in.

I think you're in for an SBF Flash. I had a similar problem the other day (tried to install a new rom...foolishly didn't make sure the battery was charged.) I tried all the above and then wound up doing a flash. Once I was back to stock the then gained root (another story) I quickly loaded Bootstrapper & restored my primary ROM (Darkslide 4.1) and am now a happy camper again.

I eventually gave up and SBF'd to stock, rooted, and then reinstalled ApeX. I was able to keep /data through the whole process, so I didn't lose too much. Is there any way to set up clockworkmod that it will always load in place of the default recovery system?

I've had it installed the entire time. By default it only bootstraps/loads clockworkmod if you tell it to(specifically you need to be able to write to /data/.recovery_mode) so you can't just boot into it when your phone is off.
What I want is a way to essentially replace the stock recovery app.

So does Koush and the rest of the Droid X owners...

Rubix has this feature sorta. If u install rubix drod implemented a beta fix that should boot into recovery if the battery is left out for x mins typically 3-5. From what I understand as long as the /system isn't formatted after installing rubix even if u use a different Ron this fix will still work. Might be worth installing rubix just to get this feature... and chances are if u haven't tried it before u might not want to leave rubix

Unless someone cracks the bootloader there is no easy to overwrite the stock recovery on droid x

Coming from an Unrevoked Forever Incredible, I've been searching for the same thing. Found this on another forum:
Getting Into Clockwork In a Pinch for Droid X
I saw a write up on this in another thread and I thought we needed it here too. I use this trick a lot and took it for granted that everyone knew it. Say you can't get into your phone to reboot into recovery through the Bootstrap App. Here are the Steps to get into Clockwork and Restore a Backup.
1) Make Sure your Phone is Plugged into the Charger.
2) Battery Pull.
3) With the Phone still Plugged into the Charger replace the Battery.
4) Wait until your Phone enters the Charging State. ( The Battery Icon Charging)
5) Hit your phone's power button, it should Boot into Clockwork Recovery. It works like a Charm for me everytime.

I figured that^ out on accident. If your stuck in the M you obviously have to battery pull but this will also work if you just reboot with a wall charger plugged in.

If you install the liberty rom, there is a feature that allows you to go into CWM every time you turn on the phone in the settings menu

[Q] Question regard Koush's Bootstrap

Question about the Bootstrapper for Droid2.
I'm trying to understand exactly what the bootstrap does vs the Droid 1's SP Recovery...
With SP Recovery, if I wanted to restore a nandroid backup, I'd hold down the x button while booting up, and it'd bring me into the SP Recovery console where I could do JUST that.
With the Koush Bootstrap, FROM A POWERED OFF STATE... how would I go about getting into the recovery? If I try to press and hold the x down, I seem to get into the standard droid recovery (and then, subsequently, have to do a battery pull to get out of it)...
Now.. can a cold boot into the recovery/bootstrap NOT work because the Droid 2 doesn't have a 'true' root yet, or am I just missing something?
I apologize for the slight newbness of the question, but it's a question I've never really found a definitive answer to. Yes, I can force a reboot into the bootstrap from within the app itself on the phone, but I'm wondering.. what if you can't get the device to even LOAD that far? Full image recovery at that point? (aka: no nandroid)
Thanks in advance
From my understanding, the cold boot bootstrap have to 1) pull the battery while on M logo, or 2) plug it in then pull battery.
the bootstrap process is actually only hijacking a part of the system partition and use to to achieve root so its not a complete or a true root. idk if that answers your question. tbh i dont really understands this myself lol
You both sound like you have it (as far as I know)

From a powered off state plug in your phone and power it on and after a few tries should activate the hijacking to startup the bootstrapper to restore a backup.
From newk8600's Droid2
Good to know.. it's simple questions like this that seem to get glossed over in the explanation of many of the exploits
I've actually seen the question asked a few times, but the usual response is: "Go into the application, and select 'Reboot Recovery'.... which is great... except, no one ever really explains what to do if you CAN'T get into the OS itself
And before someone states the obvious, yes, I'm rooted.. and No, I'm not experiencing any issues. I just like to find out these things in advance, BEFORE there's an issue.
Pulling the battery works, because there is essentially a flag that gets set and unset with the bootstrap. If your phone boots past where the bootstrap usually boots, but doesn't boot all the way to the point where the flag gets unset (or set depending how it works), the next time you boot, you get the clockwork recovery.
You can see this at work if you flash a rom and loose bootstrap. The bootstrap program can't reset the flag in the OS, and every time you reboot, you will first load clockwork recovery and have to reboot to get the OS to load. As soon as you bootstrap your phone again, this scenario goes away.
So don't pull the battery as soon as you see the Moto Logo, but wait a little and then pull it for more consistent success.
I just discovered that if you remove "superuser" permissions from bootstraper (using the SuperUser app) that it will boot into bootstrap recovery every time you power on your phone. I made it "forget" the permissions, and noticed this behaviour. Makes sense with your explanation facelessuser.

[Q] Emergency. HELP!

I was adding a new custom ROM to my Droid 2 because I wasn't happy with the Epic ROM so I went with the VZW 2.4.5 Clean ROM, I wanted to add the kangerade blue theme to it but accidently installed the wrong version of it over my ROM and now my phone is in a constant boot loop. sometimes it stays at the droid eye for a while and then load into the lock screen but will go right back into the boot sequence.
When it does boot into the lock screen there is not enough time for me to get into the bootstrapper app to boot into recovery mode.
are there any other ways to get into recovery mode? I've searched high and low on this forum and others as well.
I want my droid back =[
Have you tried to pull the battery and then put it back in. Everytime I do that, I end up at recovery thing.
yup, i've pull the battery many times. i've got it into the android recovery screen but when I to the data/cache format it just brings me to the green android starting screen and goes back into the boot loop, what's weird is that the theme is still applied to the phone

Hmmm. Kind of a roundabout process, but did you make a backup. I'd just restore it to a backup and then go from there.
i can't get into the clockwork recovery, just the stock android recovery. are there any backdoors that i could use with adb?
Try taking the battery out during the boot animation a few times, if that doesn't get you to clockwork recovery you've probably lost your recovery. I've noticed that I sometimes (or always?) Lose clockwork when installing a Rom. If that is the case you may have to sbf unless you can get adb to work from the lockscreen.

how would I go about doing an sbf? could you point me in the right direction?
On this forum three posts down is a guide. Follow the guide exactly, except you will have to put your phone in bootloader mode since it will not turn on and stay on. Do do this, hold the up button on the dpad when you turn it on.
It works, i just did it yesterday. First time ive ever had to flash SBF, and i did ALOT of roms and modding on my D1. The bootstrap is nice but not as nice as a full bootloader.

cool. i think i found the guide. it says backup my sd card to my computer..this doesn't delete everything on the sd card does it?
(not a huge concern since having a working phone is better than losing all my stuff on my memory card)
okay. I tried doing what the tutorial said and I got an error on my bootloader that says
"Critical Error: DEA1"
EDIT:
Well it looks like it was just a simple "I need to update my rsd lite program"
I was using the 4.5 and I read that 4.9 was out so I gave updating RSDLITE a shot and boom, the phone is reflashing as we speak
My sd card is intact... untouched from what I can tell. I had no apps2sd though (with 8 gigs on board why would I?)

Where is the RSD Lite 4.9? All I come across is 4.7.

[Q] Can't boot into recovery?

Hey everyone.
I've been rooted for a bit, and decided to finally try my hand at some custom roms. I experimented with a bunch on an old OH Droid I had lying around and felt like I wanted to use Cyanogen on my actual phone (the Dx.)
I've been rooted on .602, have had titanium backup and clockworkmod for a bit, so I went and got Dx Bootstrap today as well. Did all my backups and preperations, loaded up bootstrap, said it did is successfully, and when I tried to enter recovery, I would get hung at a black screen upon powering on.
With a battery pull, I have no problem rebooting as normal, but can't enter recovery via bootstrap, CWM or just the general holding down home button while powering on (then, it gets stuck on the ! screen.)
Anyone have any ideas whats stopping me from entering recovery?
When u r on gingerbread ur suppose to use Droid 2 bootstrapper and recommend download rom manager and flashing the latest recoveryrecovery

Help with recovering my Droid!!

Ok here is where I am at...I can only get into stock recovery and I have formatted data and factory reset and I only get the Motorola logo, I cannot boot into Android!
I used the Boostrap loader to get into Clockwork Recovery and wiped everything to install Apex but when I installed Apex it would not boot! I couldn't do anything but get into stock recovery. After rooting we deleted some system apps which I hear you should not do since you can't get the factory reset to work!! What can I do now? I am downloading a couple files so i can try and apply an update.zip to at least get back to stock. I did take a nandroid of my phone after I rooted but I can't get into Clockwork Recovery to restore it. Thanks in advanced.
Reinstall the removed system applications or SBF.

Can you please provide directions? I saw a site that showed how to copy over the uninstalled apps but I don't know where to download them, do you have a place?
How do i copy the sbf back? At the moment the phone will not even power on for some reason.

Extract the zip file you used to install Apex and copy (push using adb) the contents of /system/app (or just /app/) from the extracted directory into your phone's /system/app/ directory.
You just have to do this for any apps you removed from the system folder.
If you would rather go the SBF route there are plenty of guides.
Also, to your note about the phone not powering on, if the battery died you will have to get a charged Droid X battery, as it will not charge in this state. Or you can splice a cable to charge the battery manually.
To check the battery state enter bootloader mode (hold both volume buttons and press power) and check whether is says 'OK To Program' or 'Battery Low'.

Also its important to tell you that if you sbf on a low battery you could brick.... But even still I would say sbf is still the easiest option... You need the correct .sbf files and a program called rsd lite enter dl mode on the phone and bam stock dx. Make sure you wipe cache
/data after sbf in stock recovery or it sometimes loops

That's not really true, you just need to charge your battery. I've done this several times and a universal charger from radio shack fixed me up nicely (25 bucks). I've lost battery in the middle of sbf several times though and the Droid X has been unbrickable for me.
I'll put this out there though... if you do run dead in the middle of sbf you have to install ubuntu or another brand of linux in a VM or on another box, and flash your SBF with SBF_Flash. Unlike RSD Lite, that works 100% of the time no matter what. I've been "bricked" and nearly **** myself until I tried it on linux and it worked without a hitch.
Also I did this cut my charger wire and put colors accordingly on Battrey directly and recharged and started over

Phone boots into recovery from power off state

Hi,
my friend's Droid X has Gingerale 3.0 rom on it, and the latest clockwork recovery from rom manager. Weird thing is his phone reboots into recovery whenever he turns it off/reboots it. He can get it to boot normal after selecting reboot from the recovery menu. It's just weird and I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix it.
I need an answer to this also!

This is probably a result of having Jakebites mod on the phone.
There's an toggle in the modcentral script to ALWAYS boot to CWR on reboot, at which point you select "reboot" from the recovery menu and it loads as normal. It's intentional, in case you end up flashing something that screws up your boot process and need to restore a nandroid
The best way to get rid of it is to SBF your phone
